By the time Scott made it back to the Island it was the next evening, and he sought Kayo out. He needed to know what was going on, whether this new Reaper was going to create problems and what or who shot the blue arrow.
Kayo was still camped out in his rooms, for all intents and purposes asleep, but Scott knew better.
'Kayo, why are you here?'
'What do you mean?'
Ah – he'd been right then. Scott sighed. He was getting a headache from all of this…whatever it was. Kayo's voice had carried through to his bedroom as he lay on the bed and thought about how he was going to broach this subject. His brothers would say he had the subtlety of a brick, but maybe he needed to be blunt…
'Do you know what I hate? I hate being the last person to know what's really going on.'
'Like what?'
'I know you're lying. Stop hiding things from me.'
From her bed Kayo sat up suddenly, unsure of where Scott was going with this.
'I'm not hiding anything!'
'Then why did that red-haired Reaper try to kill me?'
At his words Kayo's eyes went wide, and she was very pleased to be in a different room. But there wasn't anything she could really say about the Reaper, whose description she recognised immediately. Scott took her silence for confirmation. He sat up.
'So I was right. Talk to me, Kayo.'
But she didn't. Couldn't. Couldn't get the words to form. Suddenly Scott was right beside her and he was angry. Kayo held his gaze as he continued.
'Then I'll tell you! You came here looking for this Hollow thing. Now the red-haired Reaper is looking for you. And I was almost killed for letting you hide here.'
That was it – Kayo turned her back on Scott, pulled the covers over her head and said:
'We resume training in the morning!'
'What is that – a joke?'
Scott stood his ground and Kayo turned to look back at him.
'Don't drag me into a mess that I don't want to be in!'
'You need to keep training.'
'Why should I? It is not my fault that you are here!'
She bit her lip but said nothing. What could she say? She'd already explained that the only way for things to go back to normal was for Scott to train so he was strong enough to give her powers back. But he was annoyed, and Kayo could understand that. Besides, Wayne did have a way of getting on people's nerves by acting all superior.
Scott held her glance for a moment before sighing and returning to bed.
