Chapter 11

"First Hunt"

I have just spent all, what vampires consider, morning dodging Ichijou who kept looking at me. I'm now one hundred percent sure that he knew what I was really doing last night. I sat down at the table and today's breakfast was placed in front of me. It was toast with the fluffiest scrambled eggs I have ever seen with some tomatoes and bacon as sides.

As I begin eating, I notice Ichijou inching closer and closer. When I look towards him, he looks away and acts like he wasn't just staring at me. I ignore him and go back to my food but soon enough, he makes it over to me. He sat down beside me and started to speak, "I'm sorry I barged in last night. I only meant to apologise for my grandfather and how you ended up being punished for what happened."

"Uh, it's okay. Just… promise you won't tell anyone."

"Tell them what?" he flashed me a small smile and I instantly understand. He's already acting like it never happened.

"Good. Well, I'll see you in class then." And I try once more to finish my food.

It was right as I was leaving the dining hall when Kuran called me over to him.

"What do you want?" I asked in my usual condescending tone.

"Cross came to my office earlier today to give me this…" he handed me an envelope with a familiar symbol printed on the front.

"It's your latest assignment from the Hunters Association. It appears there is a rogue Level E in town who has kidnapped and killed several teenage girls from local public schools."

"When do I leave?" This is good. An excuse to not have to go to class tonight.

"Since this is an emergency hunt, you have no need to attend classes tonight. I am told that all the information regarding the E's whereabouts is in that letter, so leave when you are ready to." he waved me away and went back to reading some kind of document.

I had just finished grabbing my things and was on my way past some students who were outside waiting to leave for class, when I saw Ichijou talking to Shiki in hushes whispers.

Oh, god no. Please tell me he isn't whispering about me.

I made my way closer to them, trying not to be noticed, and hid behind a column to eavesdrop.

"What was it you needed to talk over here for?" Senri asked.

"Well, you know how I went to apologise to Kiryuu-kun last night…" he gave a long pause, probably to think very carefully about his next words. Senri waited patiently. Takuma's eyebrows furrowed in contemplation. Instead of waiting, Senri rested his hands on Takuma's shoulders. "Describe it." Takuma nodded, clearly puzzled. "He was under the covers… there was a magazine."

It was at that point that I could see my hell-school life fly before my eyes.

Senri sighed, shaking his head. "I believe I may have cracked the code." I felt my heart drop to my stomach. "I think its highly possible that you barged in on Kiryuu about to… how do I say this politely? Jack off." I heard a loud gasp from Ichijou. "Did I really? How do you know?"

"Well, its mostly down to the fact that he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to browse magazines for no reason. Did he look a little too warm? Or like he was trying to hide something?"

"Now that you mention it, he did seem a little tense in a suspicious way."

Was I seriously being that obvious?!

"Did you see what he was reading?"

"Actually, I did. He closed it when I walked in but left it out on his bed…"

Oh fuck. No way, I need to leave. I can't listen to this and I definitely can't be around when it inevitably blows up around the school.

I sneaked back past the other students and out the main gates only to find the entirety of the day class lining up, ready for the change-over. Apparently, this was a mistake because when they saw the gate open, they got louder. However, seeing me come out from it got them quiet. I just stood there for a second, feeling like I was in the spotlight. I could hear them whispering now.

"Eh? It's just Kiryuu-kun?"

"Where are the others?"

"Why isn't he in uniform?"

Fuck, I hate fangirls.

Kaito walked over, telling the day class to get back in line. "Zero, what are you doing out here alone? Where are the others?" Obviously, he was as confused as the girls. "I was given an assignment so I'm excused from classes tonight." He nodded and sent me on my way.

I made my way down town to an abandoned monastery that was slowly being consumed by the yard's overgrowth. I could smell blood in the air, coming from a room to my left. Moving slowly and quietly so as to not alert the vampire. The door was open still, I guess it wasn't expecting company. I squeezed through the gap and saw my target hiding from the evening sun with a human girl on his lap. Raising my gun to the vampire's head, he finally noticed me. "Who is it.."

"Four teenage girls had their lives taken from them. Was it you?"

"You shouldn't be asking questions. You should have just shot me, but thanks to you, I can slit this girls throat before you pull that trigger." Shit. He held one of his claws up to the girl's throat. "Is this perhaps your first real 'hunt', Mr. Hunter?" I could do nothing but watch as he broke through the wall, still cradling the unconscious girl. I couldn't risk him killing her. Ah, I should have realised that level-e's don't need any pity.

I'll finish you off…

I chased behind the vampire, trying to decide when to act. I found that it dumped the girl in a room on one of the lower levels and I checked her pulse to make sure she was alright. There was still a strong beat so she would be alright until I finish this guy off. I took off, sensing the vampire upstairs.

I heard a commotion back down stairs.

Stupid vampire, sending me on a wild goose chase.

The commotion was getting louder and soon I heard Yuki scream. There was a platform overlooking the main entrance and from there I jumped down to where I saw Yuki. She was about to fall down into the basement through a hole made by the vampire. I landed directly on the level-e and, together, we landed in the basement, my weight on his back to keep him still as I held my gun to the back of his head.

"Don't touch her." I was about to pull the trigger as Yuki called out my name. "Why?!"

"Yuki, I won't let you stop me. I was given an order." And I turned back to the vampire beneath me, "For the crime of continuously killing 4 human girls, I will execute you on behalf of the hunter's association."

"Oh man, I got caught… But now I don't have to kill people anymore."

I didn't give him any more chance to talk as I pulled the trigger. He turned to dust almost immediately. Yuki was watching me intently, but before either of us could say anything, Shiki and Touya pokes their heads over the whole above us.

"Hey, Kiryuu-kun. We picked up this girl over there, but what do we do with her? She's still alive." Touya spoke bluntly.

"You did a good thing Zero, she's safe... You saved me too, thank you." I didn't really know what to say back to her, so instead, I looked back up to Touya and Shiki and told them that we should take her back to the Academy so Cross could check her and eventually erase her memories.

The girl was taken to the school's infirmary so Cross can give her a check up and alter her memories. She was released later that night with a bandage around her neck and an escort home. Yuki, Touya, Shiki, and I watched as she walked away with Kaito in tow.

Great, now I get to go back to the mess from this afternoon…

I looked over to Shiki and Touya. They were staring at me, like they were waiting for something.

Fuuuuck. Shiki told her…

Thankfully I didn't have to address them. "Are you two waiting for something?" God bless Yuki.

"We are for you guys to finish saying goodnight, so I can go to sleep." Shiki answered in a dry tone. I shook my head and looked back to Yuki, mustering up a small smile as if nothing was wrong. "See you at changeover tomorrow, Yuki." I didn't miss the worried look she threw my way, as I turned from her to walk back to the moon dorms alongside the others.

AU: Finished another one! This one turned out a bit longer than the others.
