Again, days go by.
Hailey has considered going over to Voight every single night but that voice in her head stops her.
What if she overstays her visit?
What if Voight only meant once in a while?
What if she just ends up an annoyance?
She'd rather stay away than hear Voight telling her that it's enough now and she must pull herself together.
And so, that is what she does. She goes home every night to a cold, empty apartment that she shares with silence and misery.
After the team had finished up and left the office for the day, it left Hailey and Voight alone.
As Voight is finishing up, he notices that Hailey didn't leave with the others but that she is still at her desk.
The case is closed and there is no other reason for Hailey to still be here, not unless she is looking for attention.
Voight then finishes up in his office and goes to leave.
"I'm getting take-out for two." Voight tells Hailey as he passes her desk without stopping. He doesn't tell her good night as a clear indication that he will still be seeing her tonight.
Hailey looks after Voight as he leaves down the stairs. That was pretty clear of an invitation for her to go over to his house tonight.
And so that is what Hailey does.
She shows up at his house, he lets her in and then they sit down at the dining room table eating while discussing the case they closed today. Not that it needed any more discussion, but Voight started it just to keep Hailey not feeling awkward.
He can tell that Hailey doesn't not want to talk about her own problems but she does not want to sit in eerie silence either.
The conversation help Hailey not to feel like she is intruding but rather that she is a guest.
After finishing their food, Voight gathers up the take-away boxes and throws it in the trash and then he switches on the kettle.
After making coffee, they sit down in the living room where the tv is switched on.
When Hailey gets to the couch where she usually sits, she sees the duvet neatly folded and waiting for her. It is clear that she will be sleeping there, again.
For the next hour or so, Hailey watches the tv program with Voight. It is crime investigations. Before Hailey never was interested in these programs, she works enough with this stuff all day long, but after watching it a bit she realizes that it is actually quite interesting.
The next thing Hailey is aware of, is her waking up due to feeling movement. Opening her eyes to slits to block out the light, she finds Voight standing over her with his hands on her shoulders.
"Lie down Hailey." Voight tells her as he lays her down on the couch.
Hailey lets Voight lay her down without any fuss and she lies her head down on a waiting pillow.
Voight then places the duvet over Hailey before he switches off the lights and goes upstairs.
Placing duvets and blankets over others and tucking them in is something that comes naturally to Voight as he used to do it with Justin and Erin. Mostly, Erin, after a long night of sorting out problems.
He has always done what he can look after others, especially those that needs the help, and he has no problem adding Hailey to the list also.
He knows that in the past he was not on good terms with her. After the thing with Roy, there was a lot of tension between the two.
Then they just started getting over the whole Roy thing, when Anna was shot and she died, almost so to say in his arms.
Anna, yet another one on the list of people he wanted to help, but in the end he just didn't do enough. Hailey thought that Voight blamed her for Anna's death, but the truth is that he blamed himself.
Sure, he saw Hailey's hand in it and in the beginning he did avoid her, until she brought it up and he realized how childish he is being and then stopped after that.
Lying in bed, Voight remembers the night when he killed Kevin Bingham. The man that killed his son.
He was making the man dig his own grave when Erin showed up and tried to stop him. She was begging him and still he did not budge. She eventually accepted it and left him to do what he wanted.
But then when it came to Roy, Voight was going to kill him for what he did to Burgess, a member of his team. He was intent on killing the man, but then Hailey showed up. Hailey physically stopped and pulled and pushed him. She did everything she could to stop him. She argued, she yelled, she got in his face. And then she begged and then Voight gave him.
"Alright, we'll take him in."
Voight gave into Hailey, he didn't to Erin who is like his daughter, but he did give into Hailey.
And that was when Voight realized that he had a soft spot for Hailey.
The next morning Voight finds Hailey still asleep on the couch. Again, Voight boils the kettle, makes coffee and expects to find Hailey awake when he enters the living room but instead, she is still asleep.
He places the cup down expecting her to jerk awake at any moment with the movement that is happening around her, but nothing. She remains fast asleep.
After finishing up, Voight finds Hailey still asleep and decides that she probably needs the sleep. He writes a note and places it next to the cup of coffee before he softly closes the door on his way out.
When Hailey wakes up, she feels warm and happy. She opens her eyes and finds a cup of coffee on the coffee table in front of her and a note next to it. Sitting up she takes a sip of coffee which is lukewarm.
The note reads that Voight has gone to see a CI.
Voight was in and out with her fast asleep and she did not even realize the movement that was going on around her.
Hailey looks at the pillow and ponders whether she should lie down and sleep some more but then her senses win, and she gets up and folds the duvet and places the pillow on top of it.
After pulling on her shoes, Hailey looks at the couch. She remembers Voight laying her down last night and then covering her with the duvet.
Her boss tucked her into bed.
Hailey then finishes the cup of coffee and takes the cup to the kitchen and then leaves the house.
On her way over to the office, her phone rings and Voight's name appears.
"Yes Sarge." Hailey answers.
"You awake?" Voight asks as he did leave her asleep on the couch.
"Yeah, I'm on my way to the office."
"We have a case."
Once at the office, everyone rolled out, Torres and Atwater, Kim and Adam and Hailey with Voight.
They are expecting some drug runner to make a drop.
Voight and Hailey then end up sitting in the car at a corner watching a shop.
"How did you sleep last night?" Voight asks as he keeps his eyes glued to the store front of where they expect the suspect to come from.
Such a normal question, but not exactly coming from her boss, but then again, she was sleeping on his couch, so he has every right to know.
"Good." Hailey gives a slight nod of her head even though Voight is not even looking at her.
"Feeling better?" Voight asks a few moments later.
"I do." Last night is the first time in two weeks that she has slept through the night, without waking up, walking around, drinking some more, crying some more, staring at the shadows on the ceiling…
"There he is, let's move." Voight calls out of the radio.
