A few days pass that Hailey is staying with Voight again.
One night Hailey finds herself standing on the bridge in the cold breeze. After work instead of going home, well Voight's house where she is staying, she came to the bridge.
After taking a look over the city, Hailey looks down at her hand, her finger specifically.
She eventually pulls her ring off, well, Jay's ring.
Playing with the ring in her fingers, her attention is drawn when she hears a car door closing behind her.
She knows it is Voight and she is not even going to ask how he knew where to find her. He just always seems to know.
He probably phoned her, but she left her phone in the car. She was planning on doing this quickly, but she ended up standing on the bridge thinking about the situation a lot longer than she planned.
Voight quietly comes to stand next to her, leaning with his elbows on the rail like Hailey.
After Hailey did not come home after leaving the office, he phoned to find out where she was, if perhaps she went out with the team, but he got no answer, her phone just rang. He then tracked her phone, and in all honestly his heart did miss a beat when he saw that the signal came from this bridge.
Hailey has been much better, or so Voight thought. Then why is she on this bridge, is she thinking about…..
The next moment Hailey drops something into the water below, but Voight misses what it was.
"I never want to see it again." Hailey comments as she watches the water.
Voight stares at her hands trying to figure out what she is talking about when he realizes that her wedding ring is gone. She threw the ring away.
Voight silently lets out a sigh of relief.
He then turns to look out over the water.
"I don't ever want to see Jay again either." Hailey states as she looks up over the city.
"You won't." Voight answers as he follows Hailey's lead and also looks up at the city.
"How do you know?"
"Because I won't let him." Voight tells her in all seriousness.
Hailey gives a smile. Voight has been very caring, it has even turned into a slight possessive care at times.
"I'll bring him to the bridge." Voight comments with slight sarcasm, and Hailey knows what he is implying, that they will be fishing Jay out of the river.
A cold feeling passes over Hailey because she knows that Voight is good for it, she knows he will do something that outrageous.
But at the same time, she feels warmth too. She is safe with Voight, he looks out for her and won't let anyone hurt her, but killing someone to protect her feelings is a bit over the top.
And that's the thing, you never know with Voight. Sure, he has been calm and controlling himself since the thing with Roy, but you never know when something might set him off, especially when something threatens to happen to someone he cares about.
Voight nudges Hailey with his elbow. "Come let's go get something to eat."
With that they make their way to the diner.
Sitting down, they both order their usual.
"I'm selling the apartment. I don't want to go back there. Too many memories." Hailey tells Voight as the food arrives.
"Probably a good idea." That is all that Voight comments, but he is quite happy about what happened tonight with Hailey throwing the ring away. It is a sign that she is moving on.
"I've been looking around for another apartment." Hailey takes a bite of her food.
"Why don't you put your stuff into storage for the time being? It's not like you need it at the moment." Voight finds himself coming up with reasons to keep Hailey staying with him.
He does not want Hailey to leave.
He does not want her to leave like everyone else.
For some reason, Voight thinks about the day Olive left with his grandson. She said nothing. If he had not shown up at the house at that moment she was on her way out, he is sure that she would not have said goodbye at all. He would just have gotten home and find it empty.
Hailey chews on her food as she thinks about it.
"Ok." Hailey happily answers after she swallows and sticks the next fork of food in her mouth.
And so, that is what Hailey did. She sold the apartment, put her stuff into storage and then moved in with Voight on a temporarily permanent basis.
