When Voight pulls on his jacket and it is not time to leave for work yet, Hailey concludes that he is off to go see Jay.
"I know." Hailey answers before Voight can tell her that.
As Voight leaves the house, Hailey looks after him and just hopes that he does not do something outrageous. Everyone knows how he can get it he is upset beyond reason.
Not even a minute after Voight had left, there is a knock.
Not thinking too much of it, Hailey opens the door.
The moment Hailey comes into view, Jay starts talking.
"I waited until Voight left. I was hoping that I might catch you alone, just maybe. Voight seems to be everywhere you are. He probably left to go burn down the apartment I'm using." Jay sarcastically adds.
They have not even started talking and it is already clear that this conversation is going to be a fight.
"What do you want?" Hailey's tone conveys just how unhappy she is to see him. She wanted to just slam the door in his face but then decided that she is a grown adult and must sort out her own problems, she cannot hide behind Voight forever.
"What do I want? I want my wife." Jay says it like it should be obvious why he is here.
Hailey gives a snort like it is a joke.
"I'm being serious."
"So, am I." Hailey's tone borders on hostile.
"I came to talk to you. Why are we fighting?" Jay pleads, he is trying to understand it.
"Really, Jay, you don't know?" Hailey cannot believe that Jay really does not understand what he has done to her.
"I don't. I do, however, know that Voight is involved, why, I don't know." His tone turns angry at the mention of Voight.
"This has nothing to do with him." Hailey defends but she knows that Voight is far too involved. But she has no problem with it.
"Really? Then why is he threatening me to sign the divorce papers?" Jay still can't believe that Voight showed up at his doorstep and was ready to cause a scene.
"Because you won't sign them." Hailey justifies why Voight is involved in her personal matters.
"What does it have to do with him? And why are you even staying with him?" Jay questions like it is an absurd situation.
"Maybe because he is the only one that cares about my feelings!" Hailey has the urge to shove Jay but controls herself.
"Your feelings, what about mine?" Jay gestures to himself.
"You're the one that left Jay!" Hailey raises her voice in disbelief. How dare he turn this on her like it is her fault.
"But here I am, I'm back." Jay's tone turns somewhat apologetic to try and save the situation.
"That does not fix anything." Hailey, however, is not calm and has no intention to be at this point.
"But we can try."
"It's not happening Jay, there is nothing left for us. You're the one person in my life that I thought would never leave me, and then you did." Suddenly Hailey feels like bursting out in tears, but she forces herself to stay in control and keep it together.
"Hailey, please." Jay pleads but it is more an outcry of absurdity almost like him leaving is not that big a deal as she is making it out to be.
"I suggest that you leave before Voight gets out of his car." Hailey suddenly informs him of Voight's return.
Jay turns around and find that Voight has returned, he didn't even notice. He is glad that Hailey gave him a heads up.
Suddenly Jay feels like a teenage boy trying to get close to a girl whose father has expressly told him to stay away, and he has just been caught on the front doorstep.
And that is when it dawns on Jay.
Hailey sees Voight as a protective father figure, the one she never had.
Suddenly it all makes sense.
He realizes that Hailey always had that void in her life and Voight filled it.
"Hailey, I understand." Jay turns back to Hailey calm. He feels no need to fight with her now that he gets it.
"No, you don't Jay. You have no idea what you have done to me." Hailey then starts elaborating in a very angry tone.
"I get the thing with Voight. I really do." Jay tries to explain to calm the situation so that they can talk.
"Jay, it's time to leave. That is not Voight's happy face." Hailey can see that Voight is unhappy as he makes his way around his car.
"Hailey just talk to me please." Jay pleads in earnest.
Hailey exhales as she watches him and there is a moment where they connect.
"It's ok Sarge." Hailey calls to Voight that is making his way over to them and with that Voight stops, considers the situation and when he is sure that Hailey can handle it, he turns and goes and sits in his car watching them.
Watching Jay specifically.
"Hailey, I get it, you see him as a father." Jay gets straight to the point.
"Do you want to talk about us or about Voight?" Hailey sighs, she is so over this conversation.
"Hailey, I'm sorry." Jay looks down for a second. "I had some things to deal with and I didn't want to dump it on you."
"Because you didn't want to dump your stuff on me, I now have stuff to deal with." Hailey is not accepting that from him.
"Let's talk about the divorce and get it over with." Hailey then moves the conversation along. She knows that Jay is going to try and sweet talk her and maybe her heart will fall for it, but she cannot allow that. Not after what has already happened. How can she ever trust him again?
"It does not have to be like that." Jay realizes that he is losing this conversation.
"Yes, it does. It is over Jay. This is over." Hailey gestures between them. "This marriage is over, not that it ever was much of one."
Voight sits and watches the back and forth between Hailey and Jay.
He went to where Jay stays this morning to find out whether those papers had been signed or if Jay is going to regret it. But when he got there, the woman answered and outright told him that Jay has gone to see Hailey. She then told him that she knows nothing and to please not involve her.
And then seeing Jay at his front door, talking to Hailey as he parked his car, sparked anger in him.
"Hailey." Jay tries one more time.
"It's over Jay." She repeats herself again.
Jay sighs, looks down, and then turns away.
With that Voight gets out of his car.
Deep down Hailey hopes that Voight lets it go and does not make a scene. She really does not feel like the drama, drama caused because of her.
"I'll bring the signed papers tonight." Jay tells Voight as he passes him.
Voight lets Jay walk on by without stopping, without sharing any words, not even sparing him a glance, like he is not even there.
Hailey steps back as Voight enters the house and closes the door.
"Why so calm?" Hailey asks as he is very calm for the situation. She is actually surprised.
"You want me to go out there and beat him bloody in the street?" Voight asks in all seriousness as he stands in front of her.
"No."
"That's why."
"Thanks Sarge." Hailey smiles, fully realizing that Voight just denied the expression of his anger because of something that she wants, or rather did not want.
Voight then places his hands on either side of Hailey's head, pull her closer and places a kiss on her forehead.
It makes Hailey smile even more.
"Let's go get breakfast."
Hailey nods and then grabs her jacket.
As they are driving to the diner, Hailey thinks about what Jay said about Voight. That she sees him as a father. After thinking about it for a moment, Hailey agrees, she sees Voight as the father that she never got to have.
After having breakfast and then arriving at the office, Trudy calls Hailey over for something and Voight then heads upstairs.
Reaching the top of the stairs, the first thing that catches his attention is a bunch of flowers on Hailey's desk.
"Where'd this come from?" He asks Burgess that is the only one in the office.
"A flower company delivered it." Burgess answers as she looks up from her desk.
Voight then pulls the card out and reads it.
It goes something like, I'm sorry….forgive me….give me another chance…I love you…
And then Voight tears it up and dumps it into the dustbin.
He then takes the flowers and puts it into Burgess' hands as she is about to walk past him.
"Get rid of it."
Voight hopes for the sake of Jay that these flowers was sent yesterday and not this morning still after talking to Hailey, or else this is far from over.
"Sure." Burgess answers with confusion. She wonders who the flowers are from and even more, what's with Voight reading her card and then getting rid of it?
"Who is it from?" Before Burgess can catch herself, the words are out of her mouth.
"Jay." Voight answers as he enters his office without bothering to turn around.
"Oh." A surprised expression appears on her face.
She looks at the flowers as she wonders if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
But judging how Voight just reacted to it, it must be a bad thing.
Burgess then heads downstairs to get rid of the flowers as she still tries to make the connection as to why Voight got so hands on about Hailey's things.
"Who's that for?" Hailey asks as she meets Burgess on the stairs.
Spending a few seconds wondering if she should let Hailey know the truth, Burgess then decides that she is not picking a fight with Voight this time of the morning.
"Wrong address." Burgess smiles as she keeps going.
