Chapter 6: The U.A. Sports Festival
After the teachers arrived, they defeated the remaining villains and saved the remaining students of Class 1-A without incident. The police arrived soon after and detained the villains. Despite such a large-scale assault, only three people were injured in the battle. Midoriya, who had a broken arm, Aizawa, with both arms broken by Nomu, and Mario, who had multiple fractures, cuts, and bruises from his fight with Nomu. Though exhausted from letting the Shadow Queen take control, Peach was fine and just needed rest.
U.A. was closed for the next few days to allow the police to investigate and give the students time to rest. Most of Mario's injuries were healed, thanks to Recovery Girl, by the next day without any lasting damage. But he was the one who had suffered the most injuries which brought on a new problem to U.A.. Most news organizations began to question if the staff at U.A. were competent, seeing that a student had to protect a teacher and was severely injured as a result. Many reporters tried to get an interview with Mario but were turned away by his parents. After the break, Mario and Luigi approached the entrance to the school and found reporters waiting for them. Without warning they rushed Mario to ask about what had happened.
"Excuse me, can you tell us what happened at the USJ? Why did you have to protect Erasure Head? Do you believe the school is doing its best to protect you and your fellow students?"
The reporters constantly bombarded them with questions and didn't let them through. Having enough of this, Mario turned to face the press.
"Look, what happened at the USJ was completely unpredictable. No one could have foreseen a group of villains breaking into U.A. like that."
"So you're saying that U.A. is ill-equipped to protect its students?"
"No, I'm saying that U.A. was caught off guard. Whoever was leading them had been waiting for their chance to do this. Their target was All Might and they chose when he would be teaching a class separated from the rest of the school."
"How do you think they got that information?"
"Seriously? Look in the mirror, it was because of you all."
Mario's words shocked the press into silence. A female reporter spoke up.
"What do you mean by that!?"
"Think about it. The press rushed U.A. the day before, right? Because of that, the alarms went off and sent the students into a mass panic. Weren't you one of the reporters there? I remember answering you about All Might."
"Yeah, so what? You can't blame me for doing my job."
"Your job? Is your job to trespass onto school grounds and cause problems for the teachers and students there?"
"We didn't trespass!"
"Really? Who let you in?"
"Um, I, I don't know. The wall blocking us was gone when we looked back."
"And that didn't seem suspicious to you?"
"Well, now that I think about it, yeah. But at the time I-"
"Was too focused on getting an interview with All Might that you helped a group of villains sneak in to get information because the teachers had to deal with you or try and calm the students you sent into a panic because of your selfish actions."
Both the reporter and Mario were getting heated at this point. Before anyone could say anything else.
"Whoa there! That's quite enough Mario. While the points you made are valid, we cannot blame the press for doing their job. If anything, it's my fault for not addressing them sooner. And as for your questions, yes, we, unfortunately, were unprepared as the villains had teleported in and those quirks are very rare. As such, we are improving our security measures to account for those kinds of quirks. And as for your question about Erasure Head, he did everything he could to protect his students. Selflessly, he jumped into the fray, facing off against dozens of villains, and had his arms broken by the strongest among them. And Mario, demonstrating the greatest trait of a hero, jumped in to defend Aizawa from that villain. Had he not, Aizawa would have been injured further, or worse."
The press seemed to be satisfied with All Might's answer.
"Alright then, Mario, head on to class. You'll be late and I don't think Aizawa would appreciate that. Now, I will answer any other questions you have."
The press began to crowd around All Might, leaving Mario and Luigi to head to class. Class 1-A was chatting amongst themselves, but when Mario entered, they went silent.
"Hey Mario, glad to see you doing well."
"Thanks, Midoriya."
"Man, I can't believe you faced off with the villain's strongest fighter. Talk about hardcore!"
"It was nothing Kirishima. Just doing what a hero does."
"I would have taken him down without getting hurt."
Bakugo said with a smirk. Mario just stared at him in annoyance.
"I doubt that Bakugo."
"What!? You don't think I could you damn foreigner!?"
"I'm stronger than you and I couldn't beat him. So yeah, I know you would've been murdered by Nomu."
"Screw you!"
Bakugo yelled as he was getting up, but then Aizawa entered.
"Enough, stop causing problems, and sit down. Kirishima, Bakugo, I need to speak with you two."
Aizawa said, gesturing outside the classroom. Bakugo and Kirishima went outside with Aizawa closing the door behind them.
"What do you think they're talking about Tsu?"
"Don't know Mina."
"He's probably scolding them. They did attack the mist villain, preventing Thirteen from stopping him and giving him the chance to spread us out."
Peach explained. Mina and Asui nodded in agreement. Soon the doors opened and Kirishima and Bakugo came back in. Kirishima looked saddened and Bakugo looked angry.
"Mario and Peach, I need to speak with you two as well."
Mario and Peach went with him, leaving the others to wonder what they did wrong. Once the door closed, Aizawa turned to the two.
"First of all, I would like to thank you two. Because of you, Peach, Thirteen was unharmed. And Mario, I may not be standing here if you didn't intervene."
Mario and Peach smiled at this.
"However, that doesn't change the fact that what you both did was incredibly dangerous. Thirteen's quirk is deadly Peach and could've killed you. And Mario, you disobeyed my order and stayed to fight Nomu."
"But sir-"
"I know you did what you thought was right, but that doesn't excuse your actions. Remember, we're the teachers it's our job to protect you, not the other way around."
"So you're saying I should've left you to die?"
"That's why I'm not punishing you, Mario. It was a terrible situation that put intense stress on everyone involved. Just don't be so quick to throw your lives away. If All Might hadn't arrived when he did, I don't believe you would have survived, Mario."
"I, yes sir, I understand."
"Good, now then. Why didn't you write down your psychic connection with your brother in your quirk description?"
"Oh, we forgot about that ability, sir."
"Okay, we'll be sure to correct that then. And Peach, I heard you let the Shadow Queen take control."
"Yes sir."
"Why? What happened?"
"After saving Thirteen from her attack, I was weakened. The Shadow Queen may have blocked it, but she requires my energy to stay active. I felt it as she was being pulled apart by the attack."
"I see what happened next?"
"Well, I was tired and in pain, then when the mist villain mentioned "despair and darkness" something snapped. I felt angry that the attack happened. I hated the mist villain for what he was doing. I was just overwhelmed. And that is when the Shadow Queen took control."
"Okay, this is good. We're learning how you lost control and how to avoid it. Now what happens when you lose control?"
"Well, the Shadow Queen will go on a rampage. She will become much stronger and bigger, and she will become extremely aggressive. It took everything I had to control her back at the USJ. If I didn't, she would have killed the mist man and continued to fight All Might."
"Okay, are there any side effects to you?"
"Yes, the Shadow Queen draws energy from me after all. If we stay in that form too long, I could die."
"That is a serious drawback."
"Yes, it is sir. I believe I explained in great detail in my quirk description."
"Yes, you did. You wrote that it was "extremely dangerous" if she loses control. But, we believed it to mean towards anyone around, not including yourself."
"Well, now you know."
"Yes, I do, don't worry about it. We'll work on that during our lessons and I think I know someone who can help."
"Really?"
"Yes, but that'll have to wait. For now, get back to class, we have a lot to discuss."
"Yes, sir!"
Mario and Peach said as they went back in. After everyone was seated, Aizawa addressed the class.
"Okay, we don't have time to waste as you are about to face one of the greatest challenges yet."
"What!? Is it another villain attack!?"
Most of the class thought.
"The U.A. sports festival is fast approaching."
"Oh yeah! This is gonna rock!"
Kirishima yelled in excitement, but Kaminari interrupted.
"Is that such a great idea?"
"Yeah, shouldn't we postpone the sports festival? There was a villain attack just a few days ago."
"They could attack once we're all in the same place."
Jiro and Ojiro also said in concern.
"The administration believes that holding the sports festival soon after shows that the threat has been handled and that the school is safer than ever. This is an important event for all U.A. students after all. It's not something we can cancel just because of a villain attack."
"Um, excuse me, but why not? It's just a sports festival."
"Huh? Mineta, don't you know how important the sports festival is?"
"Of course I do Midoriya. I just don't want to die."
"The U.A. sports festival is one of the most watched events in the world. In the past, the Olympics was the most watched sports event in the world, but then quirks came into existence. Now the Olympics have been drastically reduced in terms of scale and viewership. For anyone who cares about competition, then there's only one event that matters. The U.A. sports festival."
"That's right, and most top heroes will be watching. This is where you get scouted."
Yaoyorozu said with determination.
"Oh yeah, after graduating students join hero agencies as sidekicks."
"Yeah, but that's as far as most people go. They miss their chance to go indie and stay eternally sidekicks. In fact, that's probably where you're going to end up Kaminari. You're kind of dumb."
"Why do you gotta be like that Jiro?"
"It's true that joining a famous hero agency can garner you experience and popularity. That's why the sports festival is important. One chance a year, three chances in a lifetime. No aspiring hero can afford to miss this chance. Make sure to keep up with your training."
"Yes, sir!"
The class responded. After class, when Class 1-A tried to leave, they found the exit blocked by other students.
"What the heck is going on?"
"Is there a reason you're here?"
"They're blocking the exit. I won't let you hold us hostage!"
Uraraka, Iida, and Mineta said.
"They're scouting the competition you morons."
Bakugo said as he made his way to the crowd.
"We're the class that survived a villain attack. Well at least you know what future heroes look like now."
"So this is Class 1-A."
A voice that came from the crowd said. A tired-looking boy with messy purple hair came out to face Bakugo.
"I heard the hero course had some big egos, but you just sound like an ass. Is everyone in Class 1-A this delusional or is it just you?"
Bakugo got angry while everyone behind him made gestures to say it was just him.
"How sad to see that the hero course is full of egomaniacs. Here to scout the competition? Maybe some of my peers, but not me. I'm here to send a declaration of war."
"A declaration of war?"
Midoriya asked, the boy turned to face him.
"That's right, the name is Shinso by the way, from general studies. You know, I wanted to be a hero too, but I didn't make the cut and was forced to choose a different class. Such is life, but that doesn't mean it's over. If any of us make a good showing at the sports festival, they can move us into the hero course. And of course, to make room, they'll have to take some students out. So I'm here to let you know that if you don't bring your very best, then I'll steal your spot from right under you."
Shinso's declaration made most of Class 1-A on edge. Bakugo, however, just scoffed and pushed his way through the crowd. That is when another voice was heard.
"Hey! He's not the only one to declare war."
A boy with gray hair said from the crowd.
"I'm Tetsutetsu from Class 1-B and I'm here to let you know that you better bring your very best 1-A!"
"Whatever you extra."
Bakugo said as he pushed past him.
"Whoa, dude! You can't just call everyone else an extra."
Kirishima said to Bakugo, but he just ignored him.
"Jerk, anyways, I'm not the only one to declare war on you guys. I'm sure our class representative has something to say."
Tetsutetsu gestured to Daisy and Luigi, who were just standing there.
"Um, no. You're here to declare war Tetsutetsu, we're just here to get our friends."
Daisy said as she walked up to Peach.
"Ready for lunch Peach?"
"Sure am, let's go."
Peach and Daisy left for the cafeteria, leaving Tetsutetsu speechless. That is when Luigi walked up to Mario.
"Sup bro."
"Not much, just some curious onlookers."
Mario said gesturing to all the other students. He and Luigi then did their signature handshake. (The same one from the movie.)
"What, you know him, Luigi?"
"Seriously Tetsutetsu? I told you that my brother and Daisy's best friend were in Class 1-A."
"Oh yeah, I forgot."
After that, all of Class 1-A continued to lunch. As they were walking down the hall."
"Hello, I AM HERE!"
"All Might!"
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Midoriya, Iida, and Uraraka said in surprise as All Might appeared from the corner.
"What are you doing here?"
Midoriya asked.
"Lunch, do you want to join me?"
All Might said to Midoriya as he pulled out a tiny lunch box.
"Ah! It's so cute!"
Uraraka said aloud. Midoriya looked to his friends, who nodded at All Might's suggestion.
"Of course, thank you, sir."
"Don't mention it, now let's go."
In the cafeteria, Iida and Uraraka were talking about All Might's sudden appearance.
"Hey Iida, why do you think All Might wanted to see Midoriya?"
"Hmm, maybe to give him some advice. Their quirks are similar after all."
"Oh yeah."
While they were talking, Todoroki was listening in.
"All Might and Midoriya. What's their connection?"
Todoroki thought to himself, he then looked towards Mario and his friends. He glared at them, remembering his defeat at the combat exercise.
"Mario and Peach are still obstacles, and from what I heard his brother and that rabbit girl are just as strong. I have to defeat them, with just my right side."
Todoroki then grabbed his left side. While a pained and angered look formed on his face.
Sometime later
The day of the sports festival had arrived. The celebrations were in full swing as three heroes were patrolling the food stands. These were Kamui Woods, Deatharms, and Mount Lady. These three were hired by U.A. as extra security due to the USJ incident.
"So Kamui," Deatharms started. "Are you scouting for any students to intern this year?"
"Can't do that, unfortunately. Too busy patrolling, but, if I had the chance, the two that got the top ranks in the entrance exams got my interest."
"Oh, you mean those two foreigners from Brooklyn. I think they're brothers."
"Well isn't that interesting? Perhaps it would be worthwhile to try and get the two together? What do you think Mount La-"
Kamui turned to his comrade who was supposed to help patrol but was busy talking with a Takoyaki chef.
"Here you go, Mount Lady."
"Oh thank you, these look delicious."
"Thank you, that'll be 1500 yen."
"Oh, I left my money in my other costume."
Mount Lady said while striking a sexy pose.
"Never mind it's free!"
"Why thank you, good sir!"
"You're supposed to be patrolling not stuffing your face!"
Kamui yelled in frustration. Meanwhile, in the waiting rooms for Class 1-A, everyone was getting ready for the games. That is when Todoroki approached Midoriya.
"Midoriya."
"Oh, what's up Todoroki?"
"I think it's fair to say, that from an objective point, I'm stronger than you. But you have All Might in your corner. I won't ask what's the relationship between you two, but know, that it gives more of a reason to defeat you. And you two."
Todoroki turned to Mario and Peach.
"I'll defeat you two as well. I won't let anyone get in my way."
"Give it your best shot Todoroki."
Mario said with a smile.
"Whoa, this just got intense."
"Of course, it did, Kirishima."
Peach said.
"You remember the boy from general studies right? Everyone from that course to Class 1-B will be giving it their all, so we must do the same. To give anything less would be insulting. Not just to us, but to them and U.A. as well. We have to give it our absolute best everyone."
All of Class 1-A nodded in agreement with Peach's words. Soon they were called out and all of the students were gathered in the stadium. As the crowds cheered, Midnight came out to address the students and the crowd.
"Alright now calm down everyone. I said calm down!"
Midnight demanded as she slapped her riding crop against the floor. Everyone went silent as soon as she did this.
"Good, now to make the opening speech, we will call upon the student who got the best score in the entrance exams. Mario Mario, will you please come up to the microphone?"
Mario was caught off guard as he wasn't expecting this. His friends nodded at him to go up, and with their encouragement he did. Mario got up to the mic and turned to face the crowd.
"Sorry, I'm not too good at speeches. I just want to say, that U.A. has been everything I thought it would be, but that doesn't mean it's been smooth sailing. Within the first week, we have had to deal with some terrible incidents. But I believe that through these turmoils we have all grown stronger, and have strengthened our resolves. So I ask that not just the hero course, but that all the students give it their all today. Let us make U.A. and everyone who believes in us proud. Let us go beyond, plus ultra!"
There was a moment of silence before a roaring applause came from the crowd.
"What an inspiring speech. Thank you, Mario. Now, let us begin the sports festival! All competitors make your way to the starting line."
All the students went to the starting line as Aizawa and Present Mic commentated.
"Yo yo yo! What's happening all you cool cats? It's Present Mic and Erasure Head, here to give you viewers here and at home hot commentary. How about you say a few words Erasure Head?"
"Why did I let you drag me into this?"
"Come on, show a bit more excitement man!"
"No."
"Okay then, now our lovely miss Midnight will tell us the first game of the day!"
"Thank you Present Mic. The first game is the obstacle course! Our competitors will have to run the obstacle course outside the arena and make it back here to the stadium. The first forty-two competitors to make it will proceed to the next event."
All the students gathered at the doorway to the obstacle course. Every one of them prepped themselves for the starting bell.
"So Aizawa, what's the first thing our contestants should look out for?"
Present Mic asked.
"The first and possibly the hardest obstacle of the course. The doorway."
As the bell sounded off, everyone tried to run out of the doorway. But it quickly became packed, mirroring the situation when the press came into U.A..
"Oh man, look at them. Packed tight like sardines! Glad I'm not there."
Present Mic commentated. As the students were still trying to get out, a wave of ice was unleashed, freezing their feet. Todoroki had frozen most of the students in place, preventing them from moving and making it easier for him to leave.
"That was a nice attack Todoroki. Good thing some of us can fly."
Mario said as he and Luigi flew past Todoroki in their animal forms.
"Don't think they're the only ones who got past your attack!"
Yaoyorozu yelled as she, and the rest of Class 1-A and 1-B made it past Todoroki's ice assault.
"I was expecting Mario to get past my ice, but I should've guessed the rest of you would as well."
"Screw you, icy-hot bastard!"
Bakugo yelled while flying out with his explosions.
"Your declaration was to the wrong person. It should have been me!"
Bakugo flew past Todoroki, then turned his attention to Mario and Luigi.
"Damn foreigners. I won't let you beat me again!"
Bakugo pushed his explosions to the limit to try and catch up. Back with the others, Peach, Daisy, and Yaoyorozu were running side by side.
"So you're the girl with the creation quirk huh? I like how you got past the ice boy's attack. Your quirk is impressive."
"I know right?"
"Thank you, Peach, and?"
"I'm Daisy, Peach's best friend from America."
While the girls were chatting, Mineta was catching up to them by bouncing on his sticky balls. Once he was close enough, he had his sights locked on them.
"Oh man, three lovely rides just for me. But which one to choose? Bunny-girl, cat-girl, or jet-haired beauty? Hmm, cat-girl!"
Mineta dove towards Peach, but was smacked away by the Shadow Queen.
"Back off creep!"
"Thanks, Shadow Queen. Ugh, Mineta is the worst."
"Glad I don't have someone like that in my class. Well, it's been fun but I got a race to win. Later!"
Daisy said as she charged her legs with energy for a speed boost and darted forwards.
"I won't let you win that easily Daisy!"
Peach had the Shadow Queen fly into her and dashed forwards on all fours.
"Such impressive quirks, but I just have to make sure I'm one of the forty-two to make it in."
Yaoyorozu said to herself. Deciding it was best to conserve energy for the next events. Back with Present Mic and Aizawa.
"Man Aizawa, what have you been teaching your students? They are breezing past the obstacle course."
"Not a thing Yamada. All of this has been due to their hard work and determination. All I did was give them a push when needed."
"You heard it here first folks. Aizawa is a terrible teacher."
"What!?"
While Aizawa and Yamada started to argue, Mario and Luigi made it to the next obstacle.
"It seems our competitors have made it to the next challenge. The zero-point robots from the entrance exams!"
Mario and Luigi were confronted by three of these giant robots. As the robots reached for Mario and Luigi, they just avoided the attacks and flew by.
"And they didn't do anything. Man, with quirks like that will this obstacle course even be a challenge?"
"The obstacle course is just the first event to ensure that the strongest and most clever students pass. If it means that the competitor just happened to have a quirk suited to our tests, then so be it. There are still the other two events."
"Right, next up, the bottomless pits! Which, they'll just fly over, again."
Yamada said in defeat as Mario and Luigi flew over the obstacle.
"Damn it!"
Bakugo yelled as he desperately tried to catch up. He had made it past the robots and was now flying over the pits with his explosions. But this constant use of his quirk was already wearing on him. His arms were aching as he tried to go faster to catch up to Mario and Luigi.
"Damn foreigners!"
Back on the ground, Todoroki was feeling much the same. His original plan was to pull ahead early and then use his ice to trip up the other competitors to keep his lead. But thanks to the Mario Brothers, that plan was thrown out the window and he was putting all his effort into trying to catch up.
"It's no use, no matter what I can't seem to catch up to them. How are they so fast?"
Todoroki thought to himself in anger.
"And it seems our two front runners have reached our final obstacle, the minefield! That they'll just fly over, man. We should really consider banning flying quirks during the obstacle courses."
"You know Nezu would never allow that."
"Then maybe some airborne obstacles next year."
"I already have a few ideas."
As Mario and Luigi reached the final stretch of the obstacle course, they looked at each other.
"Okay Luigi, on the count of three?"
"Sounds good Mario."
"Okay, together now."
"One... Two... THREE!"
After the countdown, Mario and Luigi blitzed toward the finish line.
"Whoa! Where did this boost of speed come from? And why use it now?"
"It's still a competition, even between brothers. They're seeing who will take first place."
"I see, take a good look folks. The rising stars of Class 1-A and 1-B!"
The crowd cheered for Mario and Luigi as they sped towards the finish line. Back at their apartment, Marcos and Louise were watching along with Inko, who Louise invited to watch with them.
"Yeah! That's my little paisano's! You show those other kids what's what!"
Marcos cheered, meanwhile, Louise was comforting Inko who was worried about her son.
"Don't worry Inko, I'm sure Izuku will make it. Mario is constantly praising his tenacity and ingenuity."
"Right, of course, he will. Thank you, Louise."
Reassured by her friend's words, Inko went back to watching the event. Back at the sports festival, Mario and Luigi were now racing down the hallway leading to the stadium.
"And we have our first and second-place winners!"
Midnight shouted as Mario and Luigi crossed the finish line.
"But who took first? Let's go to our high-speed camera to find out."
The video began to play on the jumbo screen, and it showed,
"Unbelievable, Mario and Luigi crossed the finish line at the same time!"
The crowd roared as the video proved Midnight's words.
"As such, I suggest that Mario and Luigi share first place in the obstacle race."
The crowd cheered in agreement.
"Excellent, now we wait for the other forty competitors."
Back with Bakugo and Todoroki, they had just reached the minefield when Midnight announced the results.
"Damn it."
Bakugo growled as he held onto one of his arms. Todoroki just stood silently, seething in anger at his defeat by Mario again. Both boys were at their quirks limits and had to navigate the minefield normally. Giving the other competitors a chance to catch up. As they were doing so, two figures flew by them.
"See ya later boys!"
Daisy called out as she and Peach took a giant leap over the minefield with their quirks. Bakugo and Todoroki were angered once more when,
BOOM!
An explosion was heard behind them. Someone had purposely set off a bunch of mines. The culprit soon flew over them, it was Midoriya. He had gathered a bunch of mines together with a broken piece of a zero-pointer robot and, once enough was collected, jumped onto them to give him a boost.
"No! Not you! Anyone but you! I refuse to lose to you Deku!"
Bakugo yelled as he activated his quirk to catch up while Todoroki did the same. Bakugo gritted his teeth and pushed past the pain in his arms. And Todoroki continued to use his ice powers to speed up, despite most of his body being covered in ice. As they were about to pass Midoriya, he struck the ground with the robot piece he had, detonating another mine. The blast sent him forwards while it stopped Todoroki and Bakugo. They tried to use their quirks again but were at their limits and had to run the rest of the way.
"And more of our competitors have arrived!"
Midnight shouted as Peach beat Daisy by having the Shadow Queen stretch out her arms. After Daisy was Midoriya, then Todoroki, then Bakugo, and so on.
"Damn, foreigners. Damn, Deku. Damn, it all!"
Bakugo shouted in a rage. Todoroki just walked off to rest after overusing his quirk. Midoriya was panting, out of breath after sprinting down the halls.
"Hey Midoriya, good job out there."
Mario said, offering a handshake to Midoriya.
"Thanks, Mario, but you still beat me."
"Don't think too much about it. I don't think the teachers expected me and my brother to just fly over everything."
"Yeah, I don't think anyone has done that before."
"Well, now they can prepare obstacles for those of us who soar through the air."
While Mario and Midoriya were talking, All Might was watching, in his skinny form, from the stands above."
"Nice work Midoriya. You may not have gotten first, but you still made it. All without using your quirk. The next events won't be easy, but I know you'll find a way to pull through."
All Might said to himself. Back at the apartment, Inko was happy and crying tears of joy.
"My baby Izuku made it!"
"See? I told you he would be fine."
Louise said to her friend. All three parents cheered for their children as the rest of the students began to enter the arena.
And that's the end of the chapter. Thank you so much for reading, feel free to leave a review, and have a nice day.
