Chapter 10 - Sports Carnival

Many people with communication disorders have a disposition which does not allow them to join their friends when they see them with someone whom they don't know.

And the emotion they feel…

Is something that others might call jealousy.

"Yamai-san… 6 months in juvenile detention."

Komi was sitting on her bed, pondering over these words, learning about Yamai's fate from the text Tadano sent in the group chat.

"I mean, she did kidnap Tadano and break Onemine's leg… I guess she got what she deserved? But it still doesn't feel right. She's my friend-"

A new thought popped into Komi's head. "Was she? She's in my friend book and we hung out together, but she tried hurting Tadano-kun, and it felt awkward when she was following me and such…"

Komi lay down. After a couple of minutes of thinking, she rolled over and opened up the drawer of her bedside table. Putting her hand inside, she pulled out a notebook and a pencil.

Opening the notebook up, there was a page of names written inside. This was her list of friends.

Flipping the pencil around to the eraser side, Komi rubbed out one name in particular. "I'm sorry, Yamai-san."

Two Days Later, Sunday

Onemine's mother, Nunu entered the doctor's office. Her daughter was already in their sat down, crutches beside her.

"Hello, Miss Onemine, have a seat," stated Dr Martinez, Onemine's doctor.

Onemine's mum sat down on a chair next to her daughter.

"As you are well aware, Nene Onemine has been recovering from her surgery on her fractured femur. We normally expect the patient to stay in the hospital for two weeks and then about 3 to 6 months with crutches."

Dr Martinez picked up a file from his desk. "Fortunately, she has been recovering quicker than average according to our data. We expect that she will be able to leave the hospital and resume normal living on Wednesday."

"That's… great news! Nene, you'll be able to come home again!" her mother said excitedly.

Nene herself had a soft, relieved sort of smile on her face.

"She will still need to come in for weekly checkups, take medicine and do psychical therapy," Dr Martinez added.

"I should probably tell the others about this afterwards… Actually, maybe not? Maybe it will be fun to leave it as a surprise!"

Monday

Tadano walked into homeroom, as usual, sitting down in his seat next to Komi. After the homeroom teacher took attendance, she started reading out the announcements.

"Ok, as you may have noticed, Yamai-san has not been here recently. This is because she has been arrested. Sadly, she will be in juvenile detention for 6 months and will not be coming to school as usual."

The classroom was stunned to hear it, except Komi's friend group of course. Everyone had heard what had happened to Onemine, but none expected that Yamai would have half a year in detention because of it.

Shiego, one of the normies in the class and someone who beat Onemine up originally in the classroom thought sadly, "Jeez, six months in juvy… I feel bad for both her and Onemine-san, I wish I never participated in it, I regret it so much.

The police came up to most of us and gave us a warning and talked to our parents. I got grounded.

You know what, I'm going to apologise to Onemine-san when she gets back to school! Yeah, hopefully, she'll forgive me, she's quite nice! I'm such an idiot, just standing there when Yamai-san was breaking her leg and she was crying for help…

God, now that I say it like that, it sounds even worse…"

—————

Wednesday, Sports Carnival

The entire school was out on the field, waiting for the day to begin. Different events were set up across the area.

Everybody was in PE uniforms that were white with red accents. Tadano and Komi stood talking to each other.

Najimi ran up to them, "Hey, Sports Carnival is a celebration, why do you guys not look that excited?!"

"Osana-kun, the only reason you're excited is because we get to miss out on classes," Tadano replied.

"Maybe… Maybe not?" Najimi said sheepishly.

Komi felt a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, your only 16 degrees, pump those numbers up!"

The person was Chika Netsuno, a second year from class 2-3. She had red hair that was tied up in a bun and was extremely athletic.

Komi was terrified. "Hello, Netsuno-san!" Najimi called out, waving at the energetic woman.

Netsuno pointed at Tadano. "You aren't much better, 21 degrees. Come on, fire yourselves up! You better not ruin it for your class…"

Tadano was extremely confused.

"HELLO, ITAN HIGH! WELCOME TO OUR 23RD ANNUAL SPORTS CARNIVAL!" boomed a voice from a loudspeaker. "EACH CLASS WILL PARTICIPATE IN DIFFERENT EVENTS TO EARN POINTS, THE CLASS WITH THE MOST POINTS WINS!"

Another person spoke into the speaker, this one a lot quieter. "The event officially begins now, with the first event, Tug of War!"

—————

TUG OF WAR

In this version of Tug of War, the faster you eliminate the other team, the more points you gain, up to ten!

All of Class 1-1 were pulling at the rope, struggling to keep it on their side. They were versing another one of the first-year classes, 1-3 to be particular. After a while of pulling, Nakanaka's hands began to slip and fall.

"No, no! This can't be happening to thy, I'll be a laughing stock!"

Adjusting her grip, the chuunibyou pulled herself up. "Crisis adverted!"

Immediately afterwards, however, Nakanaka's foot slipped. "Oh…" Falling over, Nakanaka slammed into the ground, simultaneously losing them the game.

"Darn it, we lost!" Najimi exclaimed.

"Oh well, that was fun at least!" thought Komi.

The rest of the class placed down the rope and walked over back to the class's designated area. Tadano walked over to Nakanaka who was sitting on the floor, brushing dirt off her cloak.

Putting his hand out, Tadano asked, "Hey, are you alright?"

Looking up, Nakanaka grabbed his hand and he pulled over her up. "Yeah, I'm fine! Sorry, I lost the game…"

"Ehh, I don't think anyone cares that much, it's just a carnival-"

"THAT WAS OUR FIRST EVENT DONE! NEXT IS GOING TO BE LONG JUMP SO PLEASE HEAD OVER TO THE SANDPIT WITH YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHER!"

The other quieter voice spoke. "Sorry, we forgot to mention a twist on this year's carnival. We're offering a reward this time to the winning class. A pizza party!"

Podium

First: Class 2-3 (9 Points)

Second: Class 3-1 (8 Points)

Third: Class 1-3 (6 Points)

LONG JUMP

"Hehe! You seem a bit hotter now, 31 degrees!" Netsuno boomed, talking to Tadano while they were waiting for their turn at the long jump.

"Huh?" Tadano was still very much confused about what Netsuno was talking about.

The athletic girl turned away from Tadano, looking at Komi. "Wow! You sure are fired up, 45 degrees! The incentive of a party makes you more motivated?"

Komi was ready, ready to win the competition. She was pumped! Mostly for the pizza party, but still, pumped!

"Anyway, I should probably go back to my class!" Netsuno called out, saluting them as she went off to where her class was jumping.

Komi, Tadano, Najimi and Nakanaka were waiting in line for their turn on the long jump. Each person in the class would get two jumps and add their longest jump to the class total. The highest-class total wins the event! Otori had already done her two jumps and was sitting down in Class 1-1's area.

Nakanaka was up next. "Come on, you can do this! There is nothing you can't do, Arvot Les Primavera!"

Running forward, she reached the mat on the end of the sandpit and leapt forward. Thud. Nakanaka slipped on the mat and fell flat on her face.

"0.8 metres (~2'7")!" called out one of the people measuring the jumps. "It's alright, I still have another jump!"

She picked herself up. Attempt number two, and Nakanaka doesn't slip. "2.5 metres (~9'2")!"

"Yeah, that's quite good!" Nakanaka celebrated, pumping the air, and walking out of the sand pit.

Walking over to the class area, Nakanaka sat down next to Otori. "Hello, how is thy doing?"

"Ahh, hello Nakanaka-san, I'm gooood. How are you feeling?" Otori replied in her dream-like voice.

"Urg, not pleasant! We lost the Tug of War and I slipped on my first attempt on the Long Jump."

"Oh well, what did you get on your second attempt?" Otori asked.

"2.5 metres (~9'2")!" Nakanaka said proudly. Otori replied with her own score. "3.4 metres (~11'2") is what I got."

Nakanaka's confidence dropped. "That's a lot longer, and Otori-san is not very athletic…"

—————

Tadano, Komi and Najimi had finished their jumps and were now waiting for the about 6 students in their class left to go so the next event could start.

"Hello, Otori-san!" said Tadano, walking over to the class' spot where they kept all their stuff, Komi and Najimi behind him.

"Hellooo, Tadano-kun!" Otori replied.

"Greetings, Tadano-kun…" Nakanaka said mysteriously, pulling her cloak up to cover her face. "What did you guys get on your longest jump?" she asked.

"Um, I got 3.78 metres (~12'5")," Tadano responded.

"Hehe, exactly 4 metres (~14'2") for me!" Najimi giggled.

Komi picked up her bag from their area and grabbed her notebook from inside. She wrote, '5.2 metres (~17'1")'.

Nakanaka slouched over. "Mine's trash in comparison. 2.5 metres (~9'2")," she stated gloomily. Najimi stifled a laugh.

"That's our second event done for the day, our next event is going to be long-distance races so please make your way over to the track field," spoke the quiet voice speaker.

Podium

First: Class 2-3 (17 Points)

Second: Class 3-1 (16 Points)

Third: Class 1-1 (10 Points)

LONG DISTANCE RACES

Lined up at the start line, Nakanaka was ready. The race was 400 metres (~437 yards) and there were 8 students, all girls since it was the girl's race, one from each class in their year.

The race started and Nakanaka sped off. She wasn't very fast and had even less stamina so after about the quarter way point, she was exhausted and barely running.

"I think the Sports Carnival is very inconsiderate due to shaming the students whose prowess does not lie in athleticism…"

Reaching the finish line, Nakanaka fell over, breathing incredibly heavily. "God, I hate running…" she panted

Nakanaka - 8th

—————

After a couple more races, Najimi was up. Unsure what gender race to place her in, the teachers put her into a female event.

The race started, and Najimi began to run. Unlike Nakanaka, Najimi was relatively athletic and was very quick. Not before long, they were nearing the finish line, neck to neck with a girl from one of the other classes.

"Come on, just a bit further!" Najimi uttered to herself.

With a sudden burst of speed, Najimi blitzed past the girl and beat her by about 2 seconds.

"Let's go! I won!" Najimi celebrated.

Nakanaka, who had been on the sidelines watching jealously remarked, "How are you not tired?"

"Hehe," they giggled.

Najimi - 1st

—————

Getting into position, Otori's race was about to start. The clumsy girl was standing still when the announcer exclaimed the race was beginning.

Otori started a slow jog, in between a regular jog and just plain old walking.

Surprisingly, she was not in last place. She was actually in 6th due to her having some kids in the race that were not great at running, to say the least.

One student was just sitting on the ground eating grass. The other was going even slower, walking her way to the finish line.

Somehow overtaking someone near the end, Otori got a solid spot.

"Urghh, how come she gets to be placed with all the normies and get a higher position than I?!" Nakanaka complained.

Tadano stifled a laugh. Komi shrugged her shoulders. Najimi burst out laughing, practically rolling on the floor. "Even Otori-san bet you, how bad are you Nakanaka-san?!"

Nakanaka was unimpressed. "This entire thing is so stupid, I wish I could just go home and play some Camperstrike," she mumbled.

Otori - 5th

—————

Tadano's race was up next, lining up at the starting line like everyone in the event did.

"3, 2, 1, GO!" shouted the announcer, signalling the start of the race.

Sprinting forward, Tadano was at a steady spot in 4th place. Not bad. Not great. Just average. At about the quarter-way point, he could feel his shoelaces getting undone.

"Oh, not now!"

After running more, the laces were beginning to get stuck under his shoes until the inevitable happened and he tripped on them.

Crashing into the ground, he made sort of skid marks in the ground as he flew across the floor. His clothes were stained with mud. "Ow, that hurts…"

On the sidelines, Komi tried to call out to him but couldn't. "C-c, come on Tadano-kun," she whispered, not being able to speak loud enough.

"GET UP TADANO-KUN!" Najimi shouted.

"Come on Tadano-kun, you can do this, get up!" called out someone else.

"Huh, that sounds like… Onemine-san!"

On the sidelines was Onemine, with her crutch and cast, urging Tadano on. "What, she's out of the hospital? Never mind, you can do this!"

Picking himself up, Tadano began to sprint, faster than he had ever done in his life. He kept on running and running, passing other students and finally the finish line.

"Wow, Tadano-san's about 70 degrees, that's wild!" Netsuno called out, impressed.

"I… did it," Tadano panted, head down and hands on his knees.

"Well done Tadano-kun!" Onemine said, patting him on the back with her free hand since had learnt to walk with only one crutch.

"When did you get out of the hospital? Why didn't you tell us?" Tadano asked, getting his breath back up.

"Eh, I'll explain it to you, come on though, you should probably drink some water!" she smiled, hobbling alongside him as they walked back to their area.

"I'm glad to be back…"

Tadano - 3rd

—————

"So you were admitted out this afternoon, and you thought it would be a fun surprise?" Tadano said.

"Yeah, sorry about that!" Onemine replied bashfully, rubbing the back of her head.

The friend group were sitting down since none of them were in the next race. "I'm just glad to have you back, I've missed yoouuu!" Otori said in her song-like voice.

"You too, Kaede-chan," Onemine stated.

Komi was surprised, like everybody else, but even more so for her. She was getting more used to Onemine not being at school and had sort of forgotten what it felt like without her.

"I'm glad to have her back, it feels so much more lively with her!"

"Hm, I have to say Onemine-san, thy was not expecting it… but I'm glad to have you back all the same!" Nakanaka replied.

"Hehe, now I can steal from her bentos again, her cooking's amazing!" Najimi giggled to herself.

Suddenly, the announcer called, among others, Komi to come to the start line and that their race would start soon.

Komi waved to Tadano, Onemine and the rest of the friend group as she walked off to the start line.

To make it a long story short, Komi decimated the rest of the competition in her race, easily the fastest girl out of the first years.

Komi - 1st

200 METRE DASH (~218 YARDS)

"Now for the final event of the Sports Carnival, the 200-metre dash! There will be 9 people in this race, not 8. The competitors will be the top 3 people with the best times from each year! Also, the winner of this event will be granted double points!" exclaimed one of the announcers.

Komi was in this race, so was Najimi and so was Netsuno.

Netsuno was right next to Komi's lane. "Heh, you're seeming a lot hotter than you were, Komi-san! 60 degrees!"

Komi was determined but scared at the same time. She was embarrassed that there were so many people watching her and rooting for her to win on the sidelines.

"AND 3! AND 2! AND 1! AND GO GO GO!" screamed the loud announcer.

Komi sprinted off, the same as everyone else in the race. "Come on, let's win this! I'll win the pizza party for my class and also the trophy!" Najimi thought.

Unlike Najimi had hoped for, she was severely outclassed by the competition. Komi and Netsuno, to be specific, had been dominating the entire competition thus far.

Reaching near the end, it was so close for first and second place. The determiner of who won the pizza party.

Netsuno was slightly edging out Komi when they had to turn around a corner for the final bit of the track. Komi passed the corner with no problem but Netsuno took a bit of a blow.

Slipping on the ground, she tumbled over. Looking back, Komi saw Netsuno trying to claw her way back up to win the race. In a split-second decision, Komi ran back and pulled her up.

"Thanks… Komi-san. You're a nice person…"

Komi nodded and the two began to keep on running. Nearing the end, Netsuno only just surpassed Komi. "Well played, Komi-san, it was fun racing you!"

The two shook hands, nodding at each other.

"Let's go! I won! Purely due to my immaculate speed and endurance! The pizza party is mine!" Najimi celebrated, pumping her fists.

"Huh?" Netsuno said, surprised.

"While you two had your nice moment, I just passed you and you didn't even notice, let's go! Najimi stocks are up!"

"WOW, THAT WAS A SURPRISING FINAL RACE! SUCH SPORTSMANSHIP AND TRIUMP! AND THROUGH ALL THAT, ONE CLASS REIGNS SUPREME… CLASS 1-1!"

"That was a bizarre way to win, but I guess Najimi managed to pull through!" Tadano thought to himself.

"Pizza party! Wait, that means I won't be able to go home… Hopefully, it isn't tonight and is tomorrow and in class instead…" thought Nakanaka.

Najimi - 1st

Netsuno - 2nd

Komi - 3rd

Yamai sat on her bed in her room at the detention centre. It was quite nice really. The place was cozy and she was about to start school there tomorrow, hopefully, it would be as good as Itan High.

Suddenly, the door to her room opened. "Hey, Yamai-san, we would like to introduce you to your new roommate, Sakura Lily."

"Heyo!" the new girl called out, making a cute pose.

Author's Notes

Another chapter done, into the double digits now! I would give a reader update but I'm too tired to check my PC since it's midnight and I am editing this on my phone so none for this chapter :(

Anyways, sorry for saying I would write more in my holiday break, turns out my family had stuff planned instead of me hanging out alone in my room like my sister's birthday, I'm gonna be honest I forgot (0-0)

The next chapter will include the pizza party and what is up with Yamai and her new roommate, Sakura Lily, an OC of mine. I don't really like OC's so she won't have the biggest role in the overall plot, just in Yamai's story for what I have planned later on.

Also, I put a feet/yards translation for any Americans reading my stories since there were a lot of references to metres in this chapter. (I'm from Australia so we use the metric system)

Bye, see you next chapter!
