Chapter 5: Resounding

Vlad's POV

A little earlier...

When we returned to check on Danielle, I instantly knew something was wrong when I couldn't sense her presence. It wasn't subdued like it usually is when she's in human form, rather it was entirely non-existent. Suspicious that Jason was in on the whole charade I watched carefully as he walked over to gently shake his sister awake and lo and behold, a look of concern flitted across his face that told me everything I needed to know.

His sister had gone missing...again.

But one question still remained, was it of her own volition or not?

"Danielle's not here, is she?" I began evenly, internally cursing myself for not realizing she had slipped away from here much sooner.

"Of course she is, Dani's just-" Jason began in a hushed voice but I was not in the mood to play along with the obvious lie so I reached past him and sharply pulled back the covers to reveal nothing but pillows set up to look roughly like a person. I quirked an eyebrow when he tried to hide the note she had left for us too that had fluttered to the floor and placed a firm but gentle grip on his shoulder.

"Read it." I instructed, leaving no room for argument.

His shoulders slumped in defeat, Jason reluctantly read out loud. "If you're reading this don't worry, I'll be back soon. I just went back home to check something and I didn't want anyone stopping me. I'm not going anywhere we haven't already been to before so I promise I haven't been kidnapped again. P.S. If my brother is with you then this next part is to him. I know you're worried about me too but it's ok, Vlad's on our side so he'll understand why I had to do this on my own. I hope you can too."

"Honestly." I continued with an exasperated sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose after releasing my grip on Jason's shoulder. "Why must Danielle make everything so needlessly complicated instead of just doing what she's told for once? Alright, I'll take care of this so go wait in your room."

Without waiting for a response, I turned around and left the room. Truth be told, I was furious but I didn't want to alarm Jason so I restrained myself long enough to come up with the best solution. As much as I would have loved to scour the entire Ghost Zone for her, I knew Danielle would have to return to either her parents portal or mine so waiting for her there seemed like the most logical choice...

And I was right.

Danielle's POV

"Sorry Dani, I tried to cover for you but...Vlad figured it out." Jace apologized, looking extremely guilty. But to be fair, Vlad's not as easy to fool as our parents are so I couldn't really blame him for getting caught.

Besides, if I was serious about keeping where I was going a secret from them I wouldn't have left a note behind that I knew would be generic enough to sound convincing to anyone else who happened to read it while Vlad on the other hand would be able to fill in the blanks right away. That said, none of this would have happened if Vlad didn't try to use my brother as a distraction so HE could go gallivanting off to the Ghost Zone without me. So honestly, if anyone's to blame, it's that damn fruitloop.

Shooting Vlad a hard glare, my hands shook as I angrily wrote down some of the things I wanted to say to him and ask about ahead of time in my notebook. After a while, I had to force myself to stop and take a few deep breaths. I didn't write down what I learned about the Banshee yet on purpose either yet because Vlad wasn't going to get anything out of me until he fessed up to his plans to leave me behind...

Keeping his expression carefully blank, Vlad pulled up a chair from the desk on the other side of the room without breaking eye contact with me and began. "Danielle, what you did was very foolish and dangerous and you could have put yourself in grave danger. This is why I told you to take it easy and let me handle this. And just look at you, you're a mess. So, Jason my boy would you mind retrieving the first aid kit from the restroom for me?"

I was confused when Vlad asked for a first aid kit until I realized he was probably just keeping up appearances thanks to the cut on my cheek which I had totally forgotten about to be honest. But when he reached towards my face to take a closer look at the injury I scooted away from him, still too pissed to let Vlad anywhere near me. Bringing back the first aid kit along with a damp towel to clean the cut with, Jace sat next to me and I let him take a look at it instead. Personally I didn't see what the big deal was since the cut was pretty shallow to begin with and I already wiped most of the blood earlier so Jace wouldn't overreact at the sight of it. Still, I couldn't help but blush a little since it was embarrassing letting my brother treat me like this in front of Vlad.

Once Jace finished getting me all patched up, Vlad continued bluntly. "I know you two have been keeping secrets and although I can understand why you'd prefer to keep certain topics to yourselves that given how your parents are when it comes to ghosts, now is not the time to be withholding any important information that might help us recover Danielle's voice. Dealing with this is difficult enough without her cooperation."

Standing from his seat, Vlad placed his hands behind his back and unexpected turned to my brother as he said. "Normally, I would never consider sharing this with anyone else, but since this is obviously a serious matter of trust I can only think of one way to convince you that there is no need to hide such things from me. That said, Jason, what I'm about to show you must never be revealed to your parents under ANY circumstances. They wouldn't understand. And the ONLY reason I am about to do so is because Danielle has already trusted you with her secret therefore I will trust you with mine to banish any lingering doubts you may have about my motives for helping her to the extent that I have."

Realizing what he was about to do too late, Vlad transformed into his ghost half and I whirled around to see what Jace's reaction was. He definitely seemed surprised, but somehow at the same time not nearly as shocked as I thought he'd be.

In response, after sparing me a small glance Jace laughed nervously and admitted to both of us. "You know what's funny? I kinda had a feeling that you weren't exactly 'normal' even for a billionaire. I've known about my sister's ghost powers for a couple of months now, but when she told me she's been like this ever since the accident I began wondering if maybe the real reason the two of you seemed to be so close is because something similar happened to you. Besides, it seemed almost inhuman how quickly you'd show up the second she's in any serious trouble. Now I know why."

Changing back to his human form, Vlad walked up to us, his gaze softening when he saw the panicked expression on my face, and smiled. "Danielle, look at me."

Reluctantly looking up at him, Vlad reached out with one hand to rest it on top of my head to ruffle my hair affectionately. Then, adopting a serious tone, Vlad explained. "For future reference little badger, I would destroy the evidence before you go around sharing your secret identity with anyone in writing. That's how I found out your brother already knew your secret. And since I'd rather avoid any further delays and complications, not to mention I don't want you running off on your own again I promise we'll go back to our original plan and do this your way this time. However, one thing I want you to always remember that your brother and I are BOTH on your side, so there's no need for you to take such drastic measures to keep us from getting involved since helping you like this is not a burden. Not in the slightest. Do you understand?"

Glancing between the two of them, I sighed heavily and nodded, admitting defeat.

"That's my girl." Vlad chuckled, his eyes shining mischievously as he settled back down in his chair, looking much more at ease now that he felt he had 'won' this round of wits with me. "Now then, with that out of the way why don't you share your findings with us, hmm?"

I can't even begin to tell you how weird it was having my brother not only in on MY secret, but also Vlad's. I never expected that fruitloop to reveal his ghost half to Jace so suddenly which might be why the rest of our little 'family' meeting flew by in a bit of a blur. Then again, I was pretty exhausted from my field trip into the Ghost Zone so I was only kinda half-listening to them towards the end.

Left with nothing else to do unless I had to write something down for them again after I finally spilled the beans about what Prince Dorian told me about the Banshee's lair, I closed my eyes out of sheer boredom since the conversation had drifted off topic when Vlad asked Jace to share some stories about our childhood he was curious about. At some point I must've dozed off again because when I opened my eyes the whole room was underwater. It had to be a dream though since Vlad and my brother didn't seem to notice anything wrong and I hadn't sensed any other ghosts nearby either...

Remembering that I could talk in my dreams I decided to start humming to myself. Once I did, I noticed a soft droning sound echoing in my head that gradually transformed into this strangely music that's hard to describe but I guess you could say the sound was very...ethereal. I could hear it rhythmically pulsing through the water and reverberating through my chest along with a voice I knew better than anyone...

It was mine.

That's why I didn't even notice at first that my throat had started to shine until I unconsciously opened my mouth to silently sing along with the words I heard in my head. As it turns out, Vlad and Jason could hear my voice now too, listening intently as the same song echoed in their minds which meant...I wasn't dreaming after all.

Come hither unto me

O wayward wanderer.

But be not afraid.

For I am here, and you are not alone.

I will guide you, O beautiful lost soul.

Down, down, gently into the dark.

There, I will protect your sleep.

So dream only of me...

Think only of me...

Hearken only to me...

And I will forever be yours,

Just as you will forever be mine.

As soon as the song was over and the music faded away, I gasped when reality came crashing back into focus like a wave hitting the shore. Vlad and Jace were still coming out of their trance too but whatever just happened proved one thing. Somehow I was still connected to it because unlike the rest of the Banshee's victims I'm both human and ghost. In other words, it turns out that stealing the powers of a halfa isn't quite as easy as she thought it'd be without potential...side effects.

"What the hell just happened?" Jace asked, shaking his head as if trying to get water out of them before turning to me. "Dani, are you ok?"

To be honest I wasn't entirely sure but I nodded anyway. As for Vlad, he gave me a thoughtful look before adding. "It would seem that the Banshee was right about the two of you sharing a similar power because you appear to have the ability to produce sonic waves made of ecto-energy. This must be the first time the Banshee has activated the power she stole from you and for whatever reason it resonated with your ghost half. So if my theory is correct then why don't you try saying something to us?"

Blinking, I stared at Vlad like he'd gone mad then shook my head and tried to force the words out to say. "You know I can't say anything until we-!?"

Stunned, I reflexively reached up to rub my throat when I felt this odd sensation that I can only describe as that feeling you get when you drink something cool that gives you this instant feeling of relief. But the words that came out of my mouth weren't actually spoken words, they were more like these faint sound waves vibrating through the air. I could see the faint pulses of light too when I tested a few other sounds then sighed after noticing that Vlad was giving me a smug knowing look as if to say 'I told you so.'

"Ok, this is getting a little too real for me so...if you two have everything covered then I'm going to call it a night. But before I do, are you sure you're going to be alright Dani?" Jace asked me, looking anxious.

Still a bit uncomfortable using my strange phantom voice I answered. "Yes, I'll be alright. You've done enough already so don't worry about me, I'm not going anywhere else tonight..."

"I should hope not." Vlad agreed. "I expect to see you up bright and early tomorrow for another check up before we depart for our journey to find the Banshee because the sooner we find her, the better."
