For this chapter, and forgive me for this, if you please look up Winter Butterfly by Eranthe on DeviantArt for the costume that Abby will be wearing. For Mary, just look up the purple butterfly fairy costume and it'll be easy to find especially on eBay. I, unfortunately, have a hard time describing clothes unless it's wearable and not fanart and there are times when I need a visual aide to help when it comes to clothes. Also, and I can't help myself, I'm adding Trick 'r Treat. And also, I couldn't pass this up. If you look up VoicePlay on YT please watch 'This is Halloween'. They did a great job and I swear the kid in the Jack costume before he took the mask off, I honestly thought it was Sam in a new get-up.
Chapter 9
Well, it's now October which means it's Halloween time. Luckily it was on a Saturday so there was no school. It was early in the afternoon and Mary was already in her moth fairy costume that she made with the help of Aunt Dorothy. It was a purple/violet/black wing design skirt, blue and purple corset, and purple/pink wings cape with small antennas. She fixed her shoes as she heard the door knock. Mary quickly got her stick wand and ran to the door. She opened it and there was her friend Abby in her winter fairy outfit. "Wow. That's really good. No wings?" Mary asked.
Abby replied, "I wanted to respect my Russian-Jewish heritage from my mother's side so I picked this style. Besides I like the idea of the fairy wings being the skirt. Feels like I'm proud of them after they made the trip here to America back in 1905." She smiled. "I'm also a Fiddler on the Roof fan." The 2 giggled. "Is your grandfather gonna come trick or treating with us? My mom wants to come.
Mary replied, "He's staying behind. Mostly to keep an eye on the house. Last year someone egged us." Then the 2 heard footsteps. "Supposedly he has a costume to scare them."
Grandpa entered the room in his costume looking like Norman Bates from Psycho. He saw them and asked, "How's this?" The girls shook their heads no. "Not enough huh. Well, then what do you recommend?"
Abby answered, "Smiling Jack!"
Mary answered, "Slender-Man!"
Grandpa sighed as he didn't like those answers. "That's the last time I'm letting Beth baby-sitting you 2." Now he was stumped. "What should I be then?"
Ziva walked in and heard the conversation. "Why not a skin-walker?"
Grandpa answered, "Don't want to piss off my neighbors. They're of Native American descent. Let's try and not go into the offending category."
Mary got an idea. "Why not a demon version of Henry the 8th?"
Grandpa asked, "Henry the 8th?"
Mary replied, "Why not? There's always ghosts about his wives, why not him?"
Abby said, "Getting the shivers already just thinking about that. I mean the fact that he had to whack K Howard twice to get the head off was gruesome enough and that's what happened to Mary Queen of Scots."
Grandpa rolled his eyes a bit. "Beth is defiantly not gonna baby-sit you 2 anymore." He took the granny wig off. "I'll see what I can find. I do have an old hockey mask so I can be Jason instead. Meanwhile, you 2 get your bags and be safe. You lucky my family friend's granddaughter fought off her attacker last Halloween."
Mary got her bag as Ziva asked, "What happened last Halloween?" The 3 walked out of the house and started to walk down the street.
Mary replied, "Grandpa has a pen-pal in Warren Valley, and her granddaughter, Laurie, was almost attacked along with her sister, Danielle, and friends, Maria and Janet. They were at their forest hanging out for a bonfire party when Laurie fought off her attacker and killed him in self-defense. When the police found him a few days later, they said as though he was eaten by wolves or something. But the grief didn't last for long since it turns out he was a serial killer among women and children. They found his son putting a razor blade into the candy so the boy went to a 'special camp' so he can get better." Ziva paled a bit. "But don't worry Laurie's ok. In all honesty, her mother was worried about her since she said and I quote 'the runt of the litter' whatever that means."
Ziva said, "As long as she's ok. That place gives me the willies since the Halloween School Bus Massacre."
Abby shivered a bit. "Don't remind me. Every time I hear that story it scares me."
Mary asked, "Should I even want to know what's all that about?"
Abby shook her head. "Trust me you don't. I just hope that bus driver gets what he deserves."
Ziva flicked her shoulder. "Abby. We must never speak ill about anyone. Even if they are sinners. Remember as the good book said,"
Abby replied, "If you spit in the air, it'll just land on your face." Mary giggled. "Told you I'm a Fiddler on the Roof fan."
The 2 walked up and down a few streets and went up to houses that were lit up to get candy and kindly dodge those that had no lights on. Best to be polite and treat them well. Except for one house that was a heavy-duty religious and tried every year to scare kids into hating Halloween for BS reasons. But let's not talk about that. As the 2 were walking, bags nearly full, they saw a little boy walking up to a house and knocking on the house. Mary called out to the boy. "Kid?" The boy turned around and it was the autumn spirit, but Mary doesn't know that yet. "You might have to dodge that house. The owner died and his kids are trying to clean it out since it's a hoarder's house." The kid slumped in disappointment. "But you can have one of mine." The boy looked at her. "I have a lot and I don't mind sharing." The boy shying walked up to Mary and looked into her bag. "Go ahead. Take one." The boy looked at her and smiled. He gently reached down and got a box of Harry Potter chocolate frogs. "Good choice! Hope you get Snape."
Abby opened her back. "Here take one from mine too." The boy looked at her. "I have a dentist appointment soon so I wouldn't mind parting one to ease on the sugar." The boy looked in her bag and gently put his hand in and pulled out a Snickers. "Good choice. Just don't put it in the freezer too long. It's the reason why I'm going in the first place." Mary looked at her confused. "I chipped a tooth a bit. Unfortunately, it wasn't a baby tooth." The boy put the candies in his bag and opened his for the girls. Abby looked at her mom. "Is it ok mom?"
Ziva smiled. "Fair and fair, but I'm still checking your candy when we get home. You're too Mary."
Abby gently reached down and pulled out a Reese's. "My favorite! Thank you."
The boy looked at Mary and she reached in and pulled out a ghost s'more on a stick. "I always wanted one of these. Thank you." The boy waved and ran off.
Ziva patted their shoulders and congrats them. "Thank was very thoughtful of you girls. You just made his day." The three continued off on their route.
Meanwhile, the autumn spirit made it to Mary's house and ranged the bell. Grandpa came out in his costume with his hockey mask resting on top of his head. He looked at the kid and asked sternly, "Are you one of the kids that egged my house last year?" The boy shook his head quickly. Grandpa smiled. "Well then," He got out his bowl of candy. "Here you go. Go ahead and take one." The boy looked inside the bowl and got out a pack of M&Ms. Grandpa said, "Now if I were you, there is a house 3 houses down to the left that gives out good candy. You may have heard of them. They're called VoicePlay?" The boy shook his head. "Well, they did a great edition of 'Grim Grinning Ghost'. If you get there in time, they might have enough candy and maybe a show." The boy jumped up gleefully and down as he ran off to the house. "Good luck suckers." He said. "That's what you get for canceling my order to get your album. Hope Sam like your pipes." He closed the door. "And I hope the God that it only lasts 24 hours."
Same made it to the door and after knocking on it, the door opened and there was VoicePlay in their costumes. Looks like they finished a show given they were dressed up as animals. Eli as a chicken, Earl as a cow, Geoff as a lizard, Layne as a farmer, and J none as CatDog. "Happy Halloween!" They said. After some silence, Sam got his sack out for candy.
Layne said, "Sorry we're all out." Earl shook the bucket to show that they were telling the truth. Now normally Sam would give them hell for no candy, like he did with Mr. Kreeg, but given their track record over the years has been good and that they were great at their work, Sam decided to do something a little different. Sam reached into his pocket and pulled out some candy for the men and they gleefully each took a candy and popped them inside their mouths. After that, they quickly noticed something wasn't right. Each of them collapse and everything went black.
When they woke up, they were in a dark area with a stack full of jack-o-lanterns and a few skulls. Each was wearing new clothes. Eli in a tux, Geoff in a white loose shirt, Earl in blue overalls, J in a yellow plaid shirt, and Layne in a red shiny shirt. As they stood up, they started to sing nearly uncontrollably as they looked around confused.
Eli: Boys and girls of every age Wouldn't you like to see something strange? Come with us and you will see This, our town of Halloween This is Halloween, this is Halloween Pumpkins scream in the dead of night This is Halloween, everybody makes a scene Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
J None: (grabbed his throat as he did a high voice) It's our town,
Eli: everybody scream

Geoff (eyes were now white): Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

Earl: Something's waiting now to pounce, and how you'll... Scream!
J (Now has pointed ears and moving his mouth like a wolf): This is Halloween
Earl (arms slowly turning blue and was losing his hair): Red 'n' black,
Geoff (now has fangs): slimy green
Layne (has a new horn as he turns paler): Aren't you scared?
Eli (voice changed again as he was getting shorter and rounder): Well, that's just fine
Earl (Blue went up to his arms more as he was losing more hair): Say it once, say it twice Take a chance and roll the dice Ride with the moon in the dead of night
Geoff (got more dimension in his face to look like a bat): Everybody scream, everybody scream
J None (was confused as his hands turned a bit hairy): In our town of Halloween!
Earl (blue went up to his neck): I am the clown with the tear-away face Here in a flash and gone without a trace (lost all his hair except for his beard) I am the "who" when you call, "Who's there?" (J got more teeth and more hair) I am the wind blowing through your hair (Now Eli's head matches his body)
Geoff (his clothes change to make him look like a count): I am the shadow on the moon at night Filling your dreams to the brim with fright
All (this time all of them were having a great time turning into monsters): This is Halloween, this is Halloween, Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Tender lumplings everywhere Life's no fun without a good scare
J None (was now a werewolf): That's our job,
Earl (was completely blue): but we're not mean
J, Earl, & Layne(Layne got both demon horns): In our town of Halloween
Eli (was not the politician monster as he was holding a jack in the box and all of his friends were now monsters.): In this town Don't we love it now? Everyone's waiting for the next surprise
Geoff (now a vampire): Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back
Earl (almost a zombie): And scream like a banshee
All: Make you jump out of your skin This is Halloween, everybody scream
J (completely werewolf) Won't' ya please make way for a very special guy
All (all under Sam's control): Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch
Eli: Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King now
All: This is Halloween, this is Halloween, Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! (Layne got an ax) In this town, we call home (hit Earl's head with it making him a complete zombie)
Eli: Everyone hail to the pumpkin song (La, la, la-la-la, La, la. la-la-la, La, la, la-la-la-la la-la-la)
All: Whoo!
After their transformation was complete, off they ran into the unknown leaving Sam at their house. He closed the door and went on his merry way into the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, Mary, Abby, and Ziva were walking around the neighborhood one more time to see if there were any houses they opened late for trick or treating. They heard screaming and laughing as they saw VoicePlay around the area scaring kids for the hell of it. "Check it out," Mary pointed to them. "They put a lot of thought into their costumes this year."
Abby said, "Yeah, it looks real."
Ziva was a little weary. "At little⦠too real." She decided to call it a night. "Let's call it a night girls." They groaned. "You 2 have ballet to do and it's late enough as it is." Ziva took them home.
Once home, Mary poured all the candy on the table to show her grandfather. "Well, will you look at that." He said. "Quite a hall you got huh?"
Mary said, "I had a great time Grandpa. Mind checking on the candy while I change?"
Grandpa said, "Sure thing." Mary ran upstairs as he went through the candy. He went up to the candy she got from Sam and put a flashlight through it. There was nothing. "Thank goodness. Can never be too careful getting candy from Samhain."
