Karr had asked Melissa many questions about her interactions with Devon and with Michael. From what he could tell, they chose to behave as if they were family, despite not being related by blood.

Michael was the most straight-forward. As Melissa's legal guardian, he acted in loco parentis. Karr wondered if that meant Michael was taking Wilton's place for him, too. And he wasn't sure how he felt about that idea.

Devon was more confusing. As Melissa's godfather, he was responsible for ensuring she had an appropriate religious upbringing. Though from Melissa's stories about the man she called 'Uncle Devon', he seemed to be more of a family historian. Karr wondered if Devon would tell him stories about Wilton, too.

And Karr had no idea where Bonnie fit in.

Karr reached out to Kitt, to learn more. He could understand how Melissa benefitted from her relationships with the three adults. She was clearly gaining valuable knowledge from them. But what did they gain in return? And could he, too, gain from relationships with them?
