Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.

This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.

Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.

And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.

I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.

And now we are getting into the main bulk of this story so I hope you enjoy, this chapter does take place from a child's point of view so please keep that in mind too.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 2-My Friend, The Enemy

Vicky doesn't know what is going on but she thinks that someone better answer the man screaming down the phone and she figures it may as well be her.

She doesn't know how she got here. She really doesn't. She remembers the darkness and the cold but it's cold here on this street and still dark so how does she know that this is not some nightmare? She doesn't remember Adam in the darkness but maybe…

She remembers boots, she remembers the boots of the man who had kept them in the darkness but she doesn't remember more. She doesn't think looking at Adam that she wants to remember more.

But Adam is sobbing still on the floor and someone is shouting down the phone and Vicky doesn't know who he's called but clearly he is not going to deal with it so that just leaves her.

She picks up the phone gently and places it to her ears for a second and the noise is so deafening that she has to pull away pulling a face before she puts it back to her ear and listens.

"Adam, ADAM, RUZ, you need to tell me where you are right now so we can come and get you okay?! Adam—"

"Hello?"

Almost immediately the shouting stops and Vicky shivers as another cold gust of wind hits her. She steps fully over Adam pressing herself into the phone box and though it takes off some of the shelter it doesn't change the fact that the door is wide open because the grown man in front of it is face down sobbing into the dirt and bleeding really, really bad. Vicky doesn't even know what kind of injuries would cause that amount of bleeding but she reckons it wouldn't be very good.

And then the voice comes back.

"Hello?"

It's decidedly gentler this time. The shouting had stopped at any rate.

She doesn't know who this is but if Adam's called them then she thinks they must be the good guys.

She hopes anyway.

So Vicky takes a deep breathe and…

"Hello?"

The voice comes back sounding soft.

"Well hello there, my name is Kevin, what's yours?"

"Vicky"

"Why hi Vicky, can I ask you a question?"

Vicky nods and then remembers that he can't see her.

"Yes?"

"Okay Vicky…is…is my friend Adam with you?"

"Yes but I don't think he's okay. He's…well…he's stopped now but he was crying. Like really full on crying"

There's a long pause as Kevin takes that in.

"Okay" he says though clearly by the tone in his voice it isn't. Vicky is six she is not stupid.

"Okay…is he…is he hurt?"

"Yes. He's bleeding and his knee doesn't look good"

"Okay…Vicky can you…can you look for me honey and tell me where he's bleeding?"

Vicky doesn't need to look she just knows.

"His underwear"

There's a noise down the end of the phone and Vicky stops as another gust of wind made her shiver and shake a little. She can feel the tears forming and she wipes her nose on the back of her hand trying to stop them. Adam still hasn't moved and on closer reflection she thinks she might have passed out and while Vicky is no Doctor nor does she even play pretend with one she thinks that maybe this is alongside all of the blood and the pain in his knee is not a good sign.

There's someone talking down the phone at her again and she blinks feeling as if her brain is stuffed with cotton wool. She has to do this, if Adam can't do this then she can. He was so brave helping her across the street, the least that she can do is do this for him.

Whatever this means…

"icky…Vicky…Vicky are you still there honey?"

"Yes" she says quietly. "Yes I am still here. I don't…he's still breathing though, I think he's just passed out but he's very cold and so am I. He isn't wearing any clothes and…"

"Were you honey?"

"I'm in a jumper" she said and she didn't know why he blew out a sigh over the phone, almost as if he was relieved by it but he did. She shivered again and she hoped from foot to foot her whole body shaking again and then…

"Vicky honey can you tell me where you are?"

"I don't know" she said and she could feel the tears rising up again and this time she could feel them spill down her cheeks, hot for a second and then they froze on her cheeks and the panic that she had kept deep down inside of her was rising like a snake about to strike.

And then she was wailing.

"I don't know Kevin! I just woke up and he was there and he was with me and…and I don't know what happened! I just remember being in the darkness and then suddenly I wasn't and—" and then she was sobbing dropping the phone down where it dangled uselessly and she sat down on the cold ground in the box half on Adam's back legs and half on not and she sobbed into her knees until she was aware that she was being watched.

She turned to see a figure down the street staring at her and she grasped the phone suddenly.

"Kevin?"

"Yes Vicky?" he asked and she could hear…something in his voice that she couldn't understand…not then…not now.

Later perhaps.

"There's someone here. Watching me"

"Vicky" and she could hear the urgency in his voice as the figure at the end of the road stared at her. She couldn't see his face all she could see from her position sat on the floor was his coat which was long and black and his hands that were in gloves and in profile under the moonlight. Everything else was in shadow and snow was still falling thick and fast on the ground.

"Vicky is he coming over to you? Do you know him?"

"No…to both I think…he's just…staring…I can't see his face either. I…should I go over—"

"NO!" he shouts down the phone and Vicky lets out another little cry and immediately he sounds mollified.

"No, Vicky no, sweetheart listen to me I need you to stay where you are…can you tell me where you are calling from?"

"A payphone"

She heard someone sigh down the phone again and she could admit to herself looking back that that was not a very helpful statement to give, given the circumstances that they were in.

And let's face it the circumstances where pretty dire.

She shot Adam another look and then she looked up back to where the man was and…

And he was gone.

He was just…gone.

Vicky stood up and went to the edge of the phone booth and she stared at down the street looking at the empty wasteland in front of her. Adam was staring at same spot but she couldn't tell if he could see her. She bent in the street, snow on the ground and on her toes and she shook him.

"Adam?"

Eyes flickered to her and with a superhuman effort she thought he was coming back to himself but she was already looking around again for the guy and she stepped fully onto the street as his bloodied hands found pavement and he pushed himself up. She ran without thinking across the darkened road to where he had been standing but there was nothing there just an alley in which maybe he had disappeared down? She wasn't sure but she knew that if this was a book this would be the part where she would have to put it down because it was getting scary.

She looked up to see one of the bar signs nice and dark and she stared at the logo for a second trying to make it out. It looked like a shamrock but the bar was dark and a quick look around showed that there was nobody here. Maybe she had just imagined the man?

As soon as that thought had entered her head though she knew that she had not imagined him. There had been someone here watching her and Adam and if she had not been on the phone with Kevin—

Oh…Kevin.

She darted across the road and stepped over Adam who was sitting up still with a dazed look on his face. His whole body was white and he was still bleeding and she didn't know what to do. She wasn't a Doctor but the truth was unless he saw one soon she was scared of what was going to happen.

"Kevin's on the phone" she said quietly and his eyes met hers.

"Kevin stayed?"

She didn't know what to say to that only lifted the receiver again.

"Kevin?"

"Kid…Vicky what happened?"

He sounded a little mad so Vicky went with the truth.

"I went looking for the man"

She heard a sigh down the phone.

"Kid I told you not to do that"

"I know…but I think I found something that might help"

She was ridiculously pleased with herself.

"Go on."

"Where the man was standing there was a bar and it had a sign and I saw it!"

"Brilliant Vicky" Kevin said and there was something warm in his voice that made her feel proud. She felt like she had accomplished something and she turned to see Adam watching her. He managed a small smile in her direction but he really didn't look good.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah honey?"

"Adam really doesn't look good. He's awake but he's not at the same time…he's turning blue a bit as well. I can't tell if the bleeding has stopped either but he's not making much sense"

She tried to rattle off the facts but the truth was she was cold as well. So cold and she whimpered as another gust of wind and snow hit her. This was Chicago you were born used to cold winters but she had usually…

That stopped her. She didn't remember…she couldn't remember what she did in cold winters. She couldn't remember anything but the darkness.

"Vicky?"

"Sorry" she said hiccupping out a little sob and running a hand over her face scrubbing at her eyes. "I'm not much help am I?"

"Hey now" and his voice was once again gentle. "You've been amazing Vicky, I just need you to do one more thing for me okay?"

"Okay?"

"You need to tell me the logo that you saw."

She nodded. She could do that.

"It was green, I think, that flower thing that they say gives you good luck—"

She paused as she heard what sounded like whispering down the phone and then she heard a whooping sound and she stared pulling the receiver down from her face before putting it back up to her ear. Vicky might be six but she didn't think there was anything in this situation to whoop about.

"What's going on kid?" Adam managed and if she was scared for him before it was nothing compared to how scared she was for him now. He looked…ghostly…ghastly…sick and she found that she was so scared for him and scared for herself. She didn't know what had happened but she knew that she was scared for him and scared for herself because how the heck was she supposed to do this without Adam?"

But he had asked a question and so she answered it.

"There whooping"

Adam blinked at her but didn't say anything. Maybe he didn't know what to say to that. Vicky couldn't blame him. She put the receiver up to her ear again and waited.

"Vicky?"

"Yes Kevin?"

"We know where you are?"

"You do?"

"Yeah, were coming to get you okay? But I need you to stay with Adam and I need you to stay exactly where you are, no more running after strange men, if that man comes back I need you to stay there okay?"

She nodded and then closed her eyes because again he couldn't see her and normally she would remember that but her brain felt like it was being stuffed with cotton wool and she let out another shiver and a cough and then…

"I'm gonna sit down" she said finally. "I'm really, really cold Kevin"

"Okay honey you sit down" he said and again his voice was gentle. "Can you still speak to me if you sit down?"

"Yes"

"Then sit down, I'm gonna stay right on the phone with you okay?"

"You are?"

She might have sobbed at the end of that sentence she wasn't sure.

"Yeah sweetheart I am, you just keep awake and you keep listening to the sound of my voice okay. If anything changes with Adam though I need you to tell me"

"He's still pretty out of it" she said shooting Adam a look. "I can't get him to wake up fully"

"Alright well I can do that"

There was something in his tone that made her want to giggle and she brushed her hair out of her eyes and gripped the phone again as the wind howled.

"You're doing brilliantly Vicky" Kevin said as if he could hear the thoughts jumping around her head. "Your doing so well, I promise you we are nearly there, your gonna hear sirens soon okay?"

"Okay" she said and her voice was tiny. She reached out to touch Adam whose gaze was far off and he turned to face her.

"Siren's Adam" she said and he nodded though she didn't know if he had heard her.

"You did good kid" he mumbled and then he was still leaning against the side of the phone booth legs blocking the door and Vicky thought looking at him that he was dying.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah I'm here Vicky"

"Kevin I think Adam might be dying"

She heard a word, not from Kevin down the phone and she knew it was a very rude word.

When Kevin spoke it was with a sense of urgency like she had never heard before coating his voice and it made her sit up straighter despite the cold.

"Vicky we are five minutes out, if he looks like he is about to go to a great white light you kick him for me okay?"

"K"

She took Adam's hand in her own and breathed in and breathed out.

"Vicky I need you to tell me as soon as you hear the sirens okay?"

"Okay"

"You're doing so good Vicky…I can't tell you…we have rookies that don't do as well as you have"

"You're a cop too?"

"Yeah I am and were coming to get you. Just a few minutes longer."

Vicky nodded. Just a few minutes longer. She could do a few minutes longer.

She was getting tired though, the cold was making her tired and sleepy and she didn't know if that was a good thing but she leaned back against the glass.

"Vicky?"

"Hmm?"

"Don't you fall asleep on me girl"

How did he know?

With superhuman effort she forced her eyes open.

"How did you know?"

She thought she heard a laugh down the phone.

"I have a sister kiddo I know"

Huh.

And then just as she was about to give up she heard it.

Sirens.

Loud and clear and beautiful in the still darkness. She could have cried with it. In fact she did but she had told Adam…she had promised Adam she would be brave until the end so with a superhuman effort she stopped crying out little tearless sobs and said…

"I can hear you"

"Yeah you can sweetheart, were gonna come down the street now, I want you to stay on the phone with me until the end okay?"

"K"

But she was sleepy again and he was coming for her and for Adam and she was so cold.

The sirens were louder now and through the frosted glass she could see blue flashing lights and hear shouts and footsteps.

And then someone was dragging open the half shut door, a man with a flat cap who was trying to get to Adam who had not been moving. Another one was there, younger with five o clock shadow on his cheeks and together they got Adam out onto the street and Vicky gripped the phone with all she had and looked up and then…

"Vicky"

It didn't come from the phone, it came from the man holding the phone. He was tall, African-American and his smile was so kind she thought. She looked up at him and he gently took the receiver from her cold hands and put it back on the hook ending the call and she saw as he put his own phone in his pocket and the call was over.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah Vicky" he said and his voice was so kind and he held his hands out and Vicky didn't know what to do but all she knew was that it was over.

"When your ready to move sweetheart we can move okay?"

"Where's—"

"He's fine, he's alive, were looking after him now. And were gonna get you to a hospital keep you both warm"

"Can I stay with him…with you?"

He smiled at her and like Adam she noticed he had perfect teeth.

"Hon it took us six months to find you and to find him, you think were gonna let either one of you go?"

She took a breath and then another and then she took the outstretched hand and let him lead her into the street where he took his jacket off and put it around her. It was huge but it was warm and she could see a group of people clustered around Adam but she couldn't see him.

But Adam had called Kevin and Kevin was nice and Kevin was safe so she trusted that.

"You did it Vicky" Kevin said and he was watching Adam too his voice filled with some kind of emotion she couldn't name.

"You did it"

And Vicky didn't know what else to say at that point.

And can we all agree Kevin is criminally underused in the Chicago universe, man deserves a house, three kids and wife who adores the bones of him and he is constantly ignored recently to focus on Haley and her never ending obsessions or Adam and Kim who I like but come on!

Next Chapter-Alvin Olinsky's life is turned around by a phone call, or Intelligence lost Adam for six months until one day Kevin get's a phone call from a very traumatised child. Or basically Intelligence's point of view of this chapter.
