Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.

This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.

Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.

And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.

I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.

AND TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS CHAPTER AND DISCUSSION OF RAPE. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.

I have a love hate relationship with the characters of Chicago Med. Will I love, Connor I love, Ava I loved before they made her crazy for no reason. Doctor Charles, Natalie, April and Maggie irritate me beyond words which is annoying because I used to kinda like like Nat for like the first season. Goodwin is just kinda meh for me. I like the show and now Asher and Hannah are in it they it's better but the characters with the exception of Will and Connor (and wasn't that a golden opportunity wasted) kinda irritate me.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 11-Jumping At Shadows

There is a break in the case, kind of, Adam tries to deal with the news he has been given. Al helps...kinda of...so does Kevin.

"Is he off the phone yet?"

"Yes…but he does not look happy"

"Yeah well…talking to Adam's Dad tends to bring that out in him, here"

"What's this?"

"That egg mushroom flatbread thing you like from that trendy brunch thing you like and a black coffee three sugars"

"Jay right now if I could, I would blow you"

The second that Hailey Upton said that she wanted to die. Jay who had been taking a sip of his own coffee swallowed the hot liquid with a large gulp and then coloured beet red. She didn't know what to say for a second and she felt…odd…it was true Jay had been cropping up in her dreams and in her brain when she was in a certain…mood so to speak. Some Adele, a glass of red, her bullet and Jay…it was a tantalising afternoon if Hailey could get the time but the truth was that she was not sure if she wanted to progress it any further. Jay was still half in love with is ex (and it wasn't that Hailey could blame him—hell if she swung that way she was sure that she would have asked Erin to go to bed with her) but the point was she wasn't interested in relationships. Her last real one she'd been half undercover with the guy and it had ended with death and there was the debacle with McGrady that she didn't like to think about and so she tended to avoid men who had badges on their hips like the plague. That being said when you went out with men who didn't have badges on their hips they either thought your job was cool (which it wasn't) or they were threatened by the idea of a woman with a gun.

Cowards.

But case in point she and Jay…she didn't want to think about it other than when she was alone in the privacy of her own house. It was tiring, it was exhausting, bleeding and broken and right now she could kick herself because she had made it kind of worse. Shit.

"Sorry" she said opening the flatbread and sticking a huge chunk of it in her mouth. Jay stared at her for a second longer and then before he could say anything Kevin came back up the stairs.

"Cappuccino, BLT dripping with garlic aioli?"

"Thank you Lord, Antonio's still at the lab but he is not getting anywhere," Kevin said sticking a huge wedge of bacon in his mouth. Jay sat at the desk and opened his fries. He was in prime shape thank you very much. He could afford to do this to his body. Others not so much.

And besides…Will should be pleased…it's not like he got the option to cover his fries with bacon bits was it?

"We might have something" Hailey said. In truth they had been working nearly twenty four straight and they were so hungry and so cold that a little hot food went a hell of a long way right about now.

"We might?" Kevin said chewing.

"I don't…we might have something"

"Good" came a voice and Jay inhaled a fry.

"Boss?"

"Jay please tell me there is a flat white—"

"Yep and a bacon sandwich dripping in grease"

"Thank you"

Hailey watched and thought perhaps that she was surrounded by animals. Except Al. Had anyone ever watched the WHO's documentary on health but her? Because it had been enough for her to ditch the bacon and the carbs for a while.

"Hailey what you got?"

"I got what I think might be a lead but I'm not sure. So we know Adam and Vicky had to be transported right, well I looked into ways in and out of that road."

"Thought it was a blind spot?" came a voice and they turned to see Antonio. He took Jay's offering of scrambled eggs and toast and his latte and sat down at his desk opening the little wooden box and digging in. None of them had ate recently and the hunger was hitting them now in droves.

"It was" Hailey said taking another mouthful. "But I checked how to get in and how to get out and I have a black SVU decked out like one of ours coming into that alley three hours before we get the phone call. It goes in and then it comes out. Hits a security camera on the freeway now I know it's a long shot but when you consider that it is the only car that goes off the freeway in that direction then…" she shrugged and took a sip of coffee. "I don't know Sarge, I freely admit that it might be a longshot but right now—"

"What do you mean the car is decked out like ours?" Voight said watching her intently. His sandwich was untouched but he had downed his coffee in three gulps and Hailey did not know how he did it. She liked coffee as much as the next person but if she drank hers in three gulps she'd be on the floor wit the jitters.

"Like it's decked out like ours. Bullet proof glass and sides. Tinted windows. It looks like a police SUV. I mean I don't know weather or not it matters but I just noticed it. You said you were looking at Woods again"

"Where is Woods?"

"Back at his office" Antonio said and that was it. Hank Voight suddenly looked as if he was going to say more but then he changed tack so suddenly that it was jarring. She wondered weather it was just her that felt this way or if this was a natural state for all who knew him. Either way she was impressed.

"Okay so we have a car—you ran plates?"

"Yep"

She took another mouthful of her flatbread just because she could and when she looked up it was to all of them watching her. She swallowed and licked her fingers before she passed Voight the file. He looked at her and for the first time she almost got what he might have been as a father. When she had licked her fingers he had looked as if he was inches away from telling her to use a napkin and then to sit up straight. It was so ordinary. From her father it would come with a smack to the face as well.

"I ran the plates twice, registered to James McDowell thirty one years of age, no wife, no kids works for a company called Clearwater Securities. But here's the thing—"

"Clearwater Securities the company that have contracts with private companies all over the US?" Jay said and his mouth twisted into a smile that even Hailey knew had nothing to do with this case and everything to do with his days in the Army.

"Clearwater Securities, thugs for hire, send them into warzones, who act so superior to soldiers that are already there, who don't obey rules of engagement and therefore—"

"Jay"

Voight's simple command cut Jay off mid rant and he stuffed a handful of fries in his mouth with venom. Hailey had to learn how to do that.

"So…CWS hired a guy who was driving a car into the alley where Adam and Vicky were found?"

"Well…this guy's got form"

Voight's eyes met hers.

"For kidnapping?"

"No…but he…he would take people and then dump them in places…hostages that the US maybe didn't want to know how they got…if that makes sense"

"Yes" Jay said again with venom. "I know what you mean. Sarge, Mouse and I saw it happen with the Army. We knew that a guy was there and we couldn't get to it because of the rules and then they would sweep in and get the guy and then just…dump him. We'd get a tip off later and…" he shrugged and took another gulp of coffee. "And then that was what. Problem with these guys is that if you got a good one it was fine. If you got a bastard who was in it for the pay day you'd be staring down one hell of a lot of carnage"

Hailey blinked. She had not before seen Jay like this and she didn't know what to make of it she had to admit.

"So" Antonio said and it prompted her back to the present.

"So yeah" she concluded.

"Jay, Hailey, go find this guy see what he knows. Kevin…head back to the hospital. I know only the most insane of man would try to get past Meredith Olinsky but if you can—"

"Got it boss"

"Antonio. I'm gonna need Kim back here, I want you both to do a deep dive into CWS and I want to know if there was a loophole someone with money could exploit"

"What happened with Adam's parents?" Jay asked suddenly and Hank Voight turned and smiled it was so terrifying that Hailey wanted to take a step back behind Jay but she did not. She had stared down Booth. She had this in the bag (she told herself).

"Nothing good" was all Hank Voight said. "But Kevin…if Bob Ruzek should show his face…" he trailed off and Kevin smiled.

"I imagine" he said casually. "That a great deal of paperwork would be heading his way?"

"Oh I'd say so" Hank Voight said as soft as a snake venom in his fangs about to strike.

Hailey nodded and scoffed down what was left of her flatbread.

She didn't know what else to say about that.

Kevin stepped off the elevator to the room where Adam was in to find Al asleep in the plastic chair curled up next to his wife who was also asleep and Vicky curled up next to Adam under the covers. Adam was awake and his eyes met Kevin's as he came in.

"You good bro?"

"Can't sleep" Adam whispered as if he was loathe to wake up the people next to him.

"We got a lead Adam"

"Okay"

Kevin didn't know what to say.

"Your Dad might be coming to see you"

That was apparently the wrong thing to say to him.

Adam shot him a look and then he quirked his mouth in a way that told Kevin all he needed to know and that when this was over he was going to punch Bob Ruzek clean in the mouth.

"Kev"

"Yeah Ruz?"

"Jay tell you?"

"Yeah"

"You hate me?"

"Nah" Kevin said easily.

"And you know why?"

Mutely Adam shook his head.

"Because if it was Vanessa and Jordan I would have done the exact same thing that you would have done. Because you do for family. Because family does for you. And that is all that matters."

Adam watched him for a second longer and then he clutched at Vicky a little closer.

"Kev?"

"Yeah brother?"

"They wanna take her away from me"

"They can try" Kevin said softly and Adam nodded.

"Kev?"

"Adam?"

"I was raped you know?"

He did know that but it was the first time that Adam had said that out loud to him and he nodded suddenly feeling rather ill. Adam and him had come up through this thing together, Adam and him had been together throughout thick and thin and they would be together after this throughout thick and thin.

Adam Ruzek and Kevin Atwater.

Through thick and through thin.

Together.

"I know Ruz"

"You think that makes me dirty?"

Kevin shot him a look.

"You want me to smack you upside the head?"

Adam blinked surprised but Kevin pressed on nonetheless.

"I mean it Ruz. If you start talking like your dirty or damaged I will beat you unconscious. You are my brother, Jay's brother, Antonio's brother, Hailey's brother. Kim's…well…you know. Trudy, Voight they love you like a son. Hell if you were under eighteen I reckon Al would adopt you like a son. And so what? Your gonna sit there and tell me that you are damaged or something? Adam you try that and I will hit you so hard you will wish you were back in that alley"

For a second Adam didn't speak and then he shifted so his hand was exposed and Kevin took it in his own.

"You got me Ruz. You got me until the end of time"

Adam nodded and then his eyes fluttered shut and Kevin shifted a little on his chair and suddenly he was aware that someone was watching him. It was Al, Al who was watching him. Al who was staring at Kevin as if he had been awake from the very second that someone had been in the room with his son (and knowing Al that was actually probably not far from the truth either way) and they looked at each other and between the two of them there was an acknowledgement that this man in the bed was going to be protected no matter what.

It was a vow perhaps.

And God knows it was one that they would keep.

No matter what.

Adam and Kevin are precious and need to be protected at all costs. Seriously.

Next Chapter-Adam prepares to go home. Well...to Al's first. He just has an awkward run in with his Dad beforehand. Al and Meredith talk through somethings
