Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.
This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.
This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.
Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.
Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.
Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.
This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.
Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.
And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.
I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.
AND TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS CHAPTER AND DISCUSSION OF RAPE. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.
The Spirit That I Have Seen
Chapter 15-It Happened To Me
Vicky is hiding when she hears another voice and she puts two and two together and sees the man behind the curtain. But can she tell Adam who it is?
Police stations Vicky finds, have lots of places to hide.
She likes that.
Hiding is fun, hiding is safe.
Hiding is what she is good at.
So Vicky finds a nice place to hide and she waits.
Her hiding is place is in the corner of the office between Kevin's desk and Adam's. They have been pushed together and near a filing cabinet so there's this wonderful little pocket where she can sit cross legged and eat cookies.
Jay had given her a pack of Oreo's. Vicky had never had Oreo's before which had caused Jay to look rather sad and he had given her the packet with a huge glass of milk and told her to dunk them and then drink the remains. Vicky had thought it the best thing ever. She didn't know a lot about food. She didn't know what a grilled cheese was either which had sent Antonio muttering violently in Spanish and two Rookies to look at her with alarm. But she had been given something to eat and she had a nice hiding space and Al had given her a jacket and Kevin had found her some paper and some pencils so all in all Vicky was rather happy.
And then it naturally went to shit.
That was a new phrase she had learnt from Al who hadn't know she was hiding behind the desk until he had walked past her jumped half a foot in the air and told her that unless she wanted to mess up the floor with his chalk outline she wasn't to do that ever again.
Adam had laughed into his coffee winking at her. Vicky didn't know what they were going to do or what they were doing but Adam had told her they would be back, they needed to go and speak to some people about something and in the meantime she was to stay here and that there was going to be Hailey and Jay around to keep her company.
That was enough. Vicky found she quite liked Hailey and Jay. She thought that she would draw a picture of the team in the meantime and she thought that she might draw a love heart over Hailey and Jay's picture because they were clearly so in love.
She was six not stupid.
She was tapping her pencil against the piece of paper and just wondering if she could ask Jay for his red pen to colour the heart in when there was the slamming of gates and the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs at a rather fast rate. Jay stood up and she watched as he moved to the little gap that was her hiding place as if to block her from view. Vicky couldn't help but think this was rather stupid. She dropped down to her stomach and peered through the table legs tilting her head upwards. She had done this before. Don't ask her how she knew but she knew she had done this before.
And then as soon as that thought came to her.
"Hey kid…kid? I need you to get on the ground for me okay? I need you to get on the ground for me and close your eyes and I want them to stay closed okay. Put your hands over your ears as well. Now I am going to be the one to tell you when you can look okay? No matter what you hear I want you to promise me until I tell you to look you don't open your eyes"
Adam.
When…and then she remembered.
The darkness. He had told her to get on the ground and keep her eyes shut and she pressed her fingertips into the dirty floor as someone in nice shoes…
And she had seen those shoes too.
"Detective Halstead?"
And she had heard that voice.
"Chief Woods" Jay said and his tone was…strange. Vicky didn't know what it was about his tone that was strange but she knew that something about it was off. She felt the chair over the other side of the room scrape backwards, she felt the vibrations of it through the floor and she ducked down again.
She knew that voice.
"YOU THINK THAT YOU CAN BETRAY ME YOU STUPID PIECE OF SHIT! YOU THINK YOU CAN STAB ME IN THE BACK AND I WILL LET YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?"
She closed her eyes and put her hands over her ears and then she opened them again and scooted closer. She looked up through the table legs and she got a look finally at the face of the man who had kept her and Adam in the darkness, who had hurt him, who had…done bad things to him.
She didn't know what those bad things were only that whenever he was done Adam would breathe in and out very hard. Sometimes he would be sick. When she was told to open her eyes he would always look more relaxed, always look more like himself at least what she could see of him but the truth was now she remembered.
Jay was still speaking to the man and she edged backwards on her stomach like a snake. She moved so silently that she knew none of them had noticed her but the man, the dark skinned one sniffed the air suddenly as if he could smell that she was there and she stopped getting to her hands and knees and crawling backwards so she was hidden behind the cabinet finally breathing. She pushed her knee up to her chest.
"And where is the kid?"
"What kid Sir?" that was Hailey and her voice was so calm and controlled that she made something inside Vicky unravel a little. The huge knot that was inside of her seemed to detangle just a little and she found she could get air into her lungs. Breathing was good. Breathing was her friend.
"The kid" came the voice again. "That saw everything, the one Ruzek's keeping from child services"
"The one we are keeping in protective custody?" Jay said his tone deadly soft. "She's not here Sir"
"I have a DCFS agent here ready for her"
"Agent?" Jay said as Hailey spoke her voice louder and drowning out his scoff.
"Sir with all due respect Sergeant Voight has given us specific instructions that she is to remain in protective custody. Which means until we here from him specifically she stays in protective custody. And might I also add Sir that protective custody does not mean here"
There was a pause and Vicky closed her eyes as she stood up the filing cabinet hiding her. She took one step on shaky legs to the door that led to the stairs and then another, and then another. She ducked behind the glass just as she heard a low throated chuckle and that had her cramming her knuckles in her mouth unable to stop the little squeak of fear that came out of it.
She had heard that before too.
That meant nothing good either.
"What was that?"
"Mice"
"Mice?"
"Mice" Jay said as Vicky blinked. "This is Chicago, this is an old building and were all undermanned and underfunded, so yeah mice, and might I suggest politely that you take a step back from my fucking partner before she knees you so hard in the balls you will be peeing through a straw and I claim plausible deniability"
Vicky didn't have a clue whatever the hell that meant but Hailey suddenly spoke up.
"What you so afraid off?"
There was a laugh and then.
"Enough of this" and a cracking sound that she knew immediately was the sound of someone being slapped.
She wasn't going to wait around long enough to see what had happened. She had done this dance before and so she ran down the stairs at full speed and pushed the bar on the door spilling out into the street. She tripped once over the snow and then righted herself and ran out past the cars. There was an exit and she ran towards that boots slipping on the ice. She was in jeans and her jacket but that was too long and so she dumped it looking down both sides of the street.
It was safer she thought blandly looking at the cars, to stay on the one side and so she breathed in and breathed out like Adam had taught her in the darkness and she turned left and she ran.
She didn't know where she was running too, didn't know where she was running from either come to think of it. She didn't know what was happening in that room with Jay or Hailey or if they hated her or not because she had left them but she knew that she had to run. She was not going back into the darkness with that man who knew that she had seen his face, knew that she was a weak spot, knew that she knew.
And how did she know? How had she suddenly remembered? Why had she suddenly remembered?
And what had happened to Adam that would make him that upset?
She slammed into someone and the force of it was enough to have her rebounding onto the cold wet pavement.
"Fuck me" came a voice and she turned to run but there was a terrible honking noise of an upcoming car and then someone had bodily picked her up and thrown her down an alley.
"Jesus kid you trying to become roadkill?"
She turned and she lashed out with her foot and her fists but he caught her and he caught her easily.
"Woah" he said holding up one hand and then another. "Woah kid I aint gonna hurt you. I've got a stepfather who batters the shit out of me too"
That stopped her.
"What?"
"Yeah" he said nodding. He had a shaved head and tattoos up and down his arm but he was young, like teenager young. Like the photo of that girl that she had never asked about in Al and Meredith's house.
"So were cool okay?"
"My…I don't have a stepdad. I have a…cop…and a Adam…who is also a cop"
"Your running from the cops?"
She thought about it for a second and then nodded and then she burst into tears as a gust of wind hit her and she started shivering. The older kid watched her for a second and then he took his jacket off and very gently placed it around her.
"You should have started with that kid. Did a cop do that to your eye?"
She opened her mouth and then shut it and then.
"I don't know. I don't know what happened to me but I do. I keep remembering but the bad cop, not Adam the bad cop is after me and he's going to kill me I just know he is"
Dark eyes met hers for a second and then.
"Okay, come with me then"
"No" she said sobbing. "He'll hurt you too and I don't want that to happen"
"No he won't"
"Yes he will."
"No. He. Wont" he said spelling it out for her and such was the conviction in his tone that she couldn't help but gaze at him wide eyed. She had never heard anyone other than the members of Intelligence speak like that. He too had that same gift she thought looking up at him. The gift of making people trust him and he sat on the floor and eyed her not caring that it was cold or that it was snowy. He looked like she did. Cold and worn and tired.
"Kid let me tell you something. My Stepdad battered my Mom. So I battered him. And he was the biggest, meanest man that ever they lived. And I defeated him" here he sounded ridiculously proud of himself. "And so I am going to help you. Cause monsters like your cop, they need to be killed okay?"
She nodded and then she held out her pinky. He grinned showing his teeth and took it and they pinky swore on it and then he looked around.
"You wanna grab a hot chocolate and you can tell me all about your cop?"
"The good one and the bad one?"
"Sure"
"I don't know what a hot chocolate is, I've only had it once, I've been held in the darkness for so long"
His gaze sharpened somewhat looking at her for a second and then he nodded swallowing.
"Fuck" he said finally. "Tell you what, how about we go to that bar over there. I have a feeling I need a beer for this one, have you had coke before? The drink I mean?"
Again she shook her head.
"Come on then. Bartender owes me one."
He held out his hand and she took it and together they crossed the road. She noticed as a car horn beeped he made a very rude hand gesture and she giggled.
She just needed to have a drink and have a think and a talk.
"You don't work for the bad cop do you?"
"Oh kid the day I work for any cop is the day hell freezes over and becomes a skating rink for the eternally mad"
She nodded though she didn't fully understand.
"What's your name kid?" he said pointing her to a booth with shiny seats.
"Vicky" she said as walked towards the bar. "What's yours?"
"Dante Torres. But you can call me Dante"
"Thanks Dante"
He turned to get her a drink but not before she saw him roll his eyes and heard him mutter under his breathe.
"Me. A cop. Fucking kids today"
And yeah, I had to bring a young Dante into it. I just...I really like his character, I think he is fantastic, I was so glad that they got him to sign up for Season 10 cause he was and is brilliant.
And did you see that coming? Points to the people who did. Now we are getting into the layers of why Woods took Adam, how he did it and as always that wonderful confrontation that we all know is coming.
Next Chapter-Adam returns to find Vicky missing, Hank returns to find his two teammates bloodied and bruised and Dante Torres finds himself doing the unthinkable all for the sake of a kid who reminds him far too much of himself for reasons he doesn't really want to think about too much.
