Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.
This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.
This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.
Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.
Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.
Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.
This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.
Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.
And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.
I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.
AND TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS CHAPTER AND DISCUSSION OF RAPE. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.
The Spirit That I Have Seen
Chapter 16-Hang Onto Me.
Adam returns to find Vicky missing. Hank returns to find his two teammates bloodied and bruised and Dante Torres finds himself doing the unthinkable all for the sake of a kid who reminds him far too much of himself for reasons he doesn't really want to think about too much.
"All sorted?"
"I applied to be Vicky's guardian yes and I got approved" Al said quietly. "If we close off the investigation well then that means Adam can adopt her when all of this is over. Either way she'll stay with me and Meredith for the time being."
"Good. You okay kid?"
Adam was sat on the ground coffee cup in hand.
"That was not an interview to be a perspective parent boss that was a brutal interrogation that makes what we do look like a trip to fairyland"
Hank caught Al's eye and they both had to hide a grin. It looked a little like Adam was slowly retuning back to his old self. They were by no means out of the woods yet but they were getting there and that was all that mattered.
At least until they stepped into the prescient.
Hank had a very good sense of these things. Something had happened.
Trudy caught his eye.
"Woods" she said as if she was contemplating a bit of dirt she couldn't get off her badge. "Went upstairs, I heard shouting and I went up and…I don't know what happened but Jay and Hailey and Woods got into some kind of fight and Vicky is now missing—Adam if you pull out your stiches it will not be Will—" but Adam was already running up the stairs Al right behind him with Hank and Trudy bringing up the rear.
The office was a mess. Kevin and Kim were doing their best to clean it up but Kevin was also dealing with Jay who seemed to be pumped full of adrenaline and using a kind of language that would if his wife could hear it get him a clip round the ear no matter how old he was. Jay was bleeding from his nose and his knuckles were bruised but Hailey sat at her desk was typing away as if nothing had happened despite the fact that she had blood on her mouth and what appeared to be no split lip, bloody nose or missing teeth.
What that meant Hank really didn't want to think about.
"Got it!" Hailey said grinning and confirming Hank's suspicion about the teeth.
"Jay man stay still"
"If it's broken Kev I can pop it in myself"
"You'd know if it was broken you heathen"
"WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?"
Hank was still marginally impressed with how he didn't even have to shout that for them to stop what they were doing and look at him.
"Woods" Jay spat. "Came up here looking for Vicky, said he had CPS with him but that was a crock of shit. He made a move for where she was hiding—well actually he tried to punch Hailey but she ducked.
"And then he got you Jay"
Jay waved that aside—when all of this was over Hank was going to have to take his team out for drinks and have a long talk with them about not being blasé about their health or their fitness—bravado he understood but stupidity was something else.
"I'm fine boss honestly, he then tried to get Hailey again and I don't know what happened but next thing I know Trudy was there and he was out of here like a bat out of hell"
"And Vicky?" Adam asked suddenly.
"Got out through the back door according to security" Hailey said pointing. "She's running"
Adam made a small noise and Kim flew to his side.
"Were looking for her Adam" Kevin said quietly. "It's just we have to be smart about it. Antonio is out there doing a foot patrol himself. We can't put it out on the command cause if Woods is listening—"
"Which he will be he's not stupid he knows he's on borrowed time—"
"Then he will also be looking, Trudy's rounding up her best—"
"I am, Hank can I go brief?"
"Go"
He sat down on the edge of the desk.
"Denny Woods?"
"Makes sense" Hailey muttered.
"We checked" Al said grimly. "We checked him he was clean and—"
"Did you check his wife?"
There was a pause.
"His wife's dead" Hank said flatly. "She died in a car wreck about nine years ago and—"
"Then why has she got an active bank account in her maiden name?"
There was a pause as they both looked at each other.
"He has an active bank account in Lucielle's name?"
"No she does, I get why you missed it because it's rerouted through like four different banks it was only now that I thought it was odd. I mean he still keep a bank account in his wife could be tied to his kid or—"
"It won't be tied to his kid" Al said heavily. "How much is in it?"
Hailey typed away for a second and then she swore. "He took out two hundred grand out six months ago a week before Adam went missing"
There was a pause as that sunk in.
"So it was Woods" Kevin said quietly. "Two hundred grand to a security contractor to kidnap, hold and imprison a cop."
"Doesn't explain Vicky" Kim said shaking her head.
"No it doesn't"
"Doesn't explain why he took me either. It can't…boss surely it can't be because I wouldn't spy for him?"
"I don't think that was the case" Hank said heavily. "I think the plan was that he was going to kidnap you and blame it on me and Al. It makes sense, he wants me gone, he knows Al would defend me, he gets rid of both of us in one swoop. And it nearly worked didn't it? I bet he let you out thinking that you would blame me and you all nearly did. And yet…"
"What the hell has Vicky got to do with it though?" Kim said into the silence. "I don't get it. I don't…"
"Well he panicked today" Jay said grimly. "He knew that she would recognize him. I don't know why but he knew. Maybe he knew that she would recognize him from when he had someone take Adam. Maybe the whole thing—"
"Or maybe she was the kid of the guy who took me" Adam said quietly. "Maybe that was how he did it?"
"Without speaking to the guy who did it we are never going to find out" Hank said finally. "Priority right now has got to be finding Vicky. Adam you know the kid, you know her, tell me where you think she would go."
"Somewhere safe" Adam said automatically. "Somewhere she knew she was safe. Maybe Meredith or Will or…she wouldn't wander off with a stranger she doesn't trust I am sure of that. She's not gonna flag down a car either. She doesn't trust cops right now. Right now she—"
But the phone rang.
And that effectively silenced the conversation.
But not the panic.
Oh no.
Not the panic.
He did not want to do this. Dante did not, did not want to do this. He really did not want to do this. He hated this.
He felt dirty just by doing this. But there was a kid who wanted Adam with a yellowing eye and he was going to get her this Adam even if he went to the Big House because of it.
Ugh.
"Hello? Hello? Vicky?" came the frantic reply. Vicky had scribbled down a number that she had learnt by heart, because I don't want to sleep and Dante had called it after buying her one of those mini tubs of cookie dough ice cream because she had told him everything and Dante thought that A. people who hurt kids needed annihilating off the face of the fucking planet and B. people who kept children away from cookie dough ice cream should be shot on sight.
"Yeah this isn't Vicky but I am with her" he said closing his eyes and feeling sick. "You the cop she trusts, Adam?"
"Yes" the voice said sounding half suspicious. "Who are you?"
"The good smarition that stopped your kid from being road kill" Dante snapped. Fucking cops. "I don't have to do this you know. She told me what happened and I had a moment of compassion you know? So you wanna come get her or what?"
"Who is this?"
"Dan—who I am isn't important" he snapped. "I am a citizen"
"Yeah kid I don't care about that I just—"
"I am at Frankie's bar, South side. I am only gonna be here an hour, come don't come I don't care but I am taking the kid home with me if you don't"
And with that he hung up the phone.
Fucking cops.
Vicky slurped up her ice cream and grinned at him.
"That was so nice" she said quietly. "I never knew something that nice existed"
Dante hated the whole fucking world right now.
"I called this Adam" he said shortly. "He's on his way. Tell me more about this Woods guy"
"I don't want to get you in trouble"
Dante snorted. "Kid I am already in trouble. May as well go all in at this point"
She nodded though he knew she didn't understand a word of what he was saying.
"I think he's a boss with the police. They kept calling him Sir"
Dante knew it. Fucking corruption man. It was everywhere.
"And he went for you?"
"Well Jay and Hayley got there first. I do hope he hasn't hurt them. But Jay was in the Army so I hope that helped"
Dante thought it probably did.
He looked out the window and she followed his gaze as a black car pulled up and then she gasped and ducked under the table so fast he didn't get it. He looked back and saw what looked like a dark skinned man and—
Yeah, Dante knew what was coming next.
"DOWN!" he yelled and he flattened himself to the booth as the shooting started. Glass flew everywhere but not for nothing was Dante the son of a woman who had been abused. He knew what to do next. He threw himself to the floor and grabbed Vicky under the table.
"That him?"
She nodded.
Fuck. His. Life.
But he was in this now and he was not going to stop.
He was certainly not going to throw this kid to the wolves.
"Come on. Bar now." He shouted and she nodded. Together they got to behind the bar and he threw her into a corner as everyone screamed and shouted. He wasn't stupid enough to come to the bar and he scrambled for his phone bringing up the last number.
"Shooting" he said as soon as someone picked up. "Woods, fucking move!"
If they were quick then they would be there. If they weren't…well…he was already looking at about five years so what was another five?
He told himself.
He bit his bottom lip as the door slammed open and he twisted grabbing a bottle that had been shattered neck up.
"You stay here eyes closed" he said grimly. "You understand?"
She nodded blue eyes wide with tears and despite it Dante felt something.
But he had done this before. He could do it again.
And so he gave himself over to the singing in his blood.
He ducked around the side and watched. Back to him he saw the guy look around and he breathed.
One. Two. Three.
Go.
Bottle raised he went for it.
He slammed into him back first with all the strength that he had sending them both flying and the gun flying into a corner.
The man twisted and his hand came out but Dante was ready for that. He brought his fist down on the twist and punched and he punched hard.
Once. Twice. Three times.
A hand came out and he felt it close around his neck and he gagged struggling to breathe as he was pushed backwards. He grabbed the bottle and rammed it into the side of the man's head but it didn't even register. Glass went all over the two of them and he felt his head rise and then slam into the hard wood. He grappled with his feet and he gagged again as he saw stars and he was sure the mad man was going to kill him.
Death by a fucking corrupt cop.
What a way to go.
Well…either way he had been a statistic hadn't he?
Dante Torres. Nothing special.
He tasted blood and he gripped glass and he thrust it forwards. He was aiming for neck but he got cheek and surprise was enough to get a breath of air in and then he was twisting and kicking and screaming and thrashing and then…
And then…
Something hit the cop in the back, It wasn't a bullet but it was something that made him seize and twist and flail and he gagged pushing backwards moving out of the way wheezing against the solid wood of the bar a solid barrier between this fucker and the kid he had come here to kilk.
And suddenly the bar was awash with cops and Dante looked up as one of them a young guy with a beard and gentle eyes approached him as if he was a wounded animal and he laughed spitting out blood chest heaving and lungs burning and glass cutting into the skin of his palm.
For the first time in his life Dante Torres was glad that a fucking cop had turned up.
And that made him laugh and laugh and laugh.
God knows it was better than crying.
And yeah, I had to bring a young Dante into it. I just...I really like his character, I think he is fantastic, I was so glad that they got him to sign up for Season 10 cause he was and is brilliant.
I will bring you the next one as soon as I can.
Next Chapter-Woods ends up in the box as Adam finally, finally learns the truth. But that's only part one of the story. Jay gives Dante some advice.
