Hello, so here I am again with another story again for Rosalie and Emmett a criminally underrated couple. This time we are in a New Moon setting for a smaller story of about 17 chapters all taking place from the Volterra arc. So yeah an AU but only a little bit.
(As if that makes a difference!)
A side note on the relationship with Alice. As I have previously stated as I grow older I find that I struggle with the character of Alice the most. I do see her actions sometimes as toxic and while I don't believe Stephanie intended for her to be written that way sometimes I just want to reach through the pages and shake the vampire until she understands certain things. This was a way of getting all of that out. If you love Alice and think she can do no wrong this might not be the best story for you. Her relationship with Rosalie and how she and Edward treat Rosalie is something I have addressed many a time throughout my fics and stories but I hope that you enjoy nonetheless. This is not intended to be an Alice bashing fic, this is just for me to have my say as an ardent Rosalie fan. For all Alice lovers out there I hope that you understand and I am hopeful that one day I will learn to re-like Alice again.
This is not one hundred percent cannon, if you are looking for word for word perfect scenes out of the book then I am not the author for you, this is my interpretation of these events.
There will be trigger warnings for this story and keep in mind a hell of a lot of swearing for what is in the books, also some interpretation on Rosalie and Emmett's past. This also might turn into an M Rated story depending on how I take it. Again something to keep in mind as we progress.
Some events might be missed from the book as well but the bare bones of it still remain.
Also spelling/grammar etc...not my strongest point. Again something to take note off.
Disclaimer-Nothing is mine.
Please Read and Review.
And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.
Also this chapter is based more on the movie than the book, in the movie it all happens in the space of one night and so that's what's happening in this story. Rest of the time it should be a pretty even spread between the two.
And some TRIGGER WARNINGS for Bella's depression (seriously don't get me started on what that turns to in Eclipse) and Rosalie's past.
And this chapter does deal with Carlisle and Rosalie's father daughter relationship, again it is one of those relationships in the Twilight Saga that endlessly fascinates me simply because it is never explored. So this my taking on it and my taking on Carlisle's point of view which is always tricky.
But that being said I do so like writing Carlisle bonding with his children, especially his boys. I can just totally see the father/son hunting nights in my head.
Spheres Of Influence
Chapter 6-Judge Not For You Will Be Judged.
Esme and Carlisle share a moment with their son as they witness the destruction of their family. Slightly Shorter Chapter and the last one before we head back to Rosalie for a time.
"Death ends a life, not a relationship" Mitch Albom.
Emmett had not moved in a long time. Carlisle did not know if he had gone into shock (could vampires even do that?) or if it was a delayed reaction, maybe Emmett was training himself to stay very, very still just in case…either way he did not know and if he really didn't like it. Emmett was the one son where silence did not follow. It took a lot to move Emmett's usual happy, go lucky attitude to silence and this had not just reduced him to silence this had reduced him to a mute sitting on the ground his hands clawing the dirt and his eyes unseeing staring right in front of him and it scared Carlisle more than he wanted to admit.
There was the sound of running feet and he turned. He already knew who it was, he would recognise that gentle step, that gentle soul even if they were separated by hundreds of miles. He would always recognise her on the wind because they were two parts of the same soul, they were two halves of the same whole and so it was not a surprise when Esme came to join them entering as silently as she had done all those years ago when she had first become a vampire and Carlisle had been enthralled and yet so terrified to say it, convinced that Edward was the vampire she was supposed to be with and not him because Edward brought out the smile in Esme. He had never considered…he could shake his head at how foolish he had been but he had been foolish. He had never considered it a possibility, never considered himself lucky or worthy of such love and yet with Esme at his side they had built this wonderful family that was now being torn apart over a simple misguided action and unless they were extremely lucky they would never be the same.
He had been thinking about it as he sat on the fallen tree trunk Emmett at his feet staring into space mind locked in horror and fingers in the dirt dug deep, Carlisle's hand on his shoulder. Aro was such a hard immortal to read. Carlisle did genuinely believe that they had a friendship that existed still but then again Aro had also been growing in paranoia since the last time that they had spoken and Carlisle knew his family were the greatest threat that the Volturi had come across in a long time even if they did not act as such. Coupled with Bella, the fragile human who knew all those dangerous secrets and he knew that even if Aro did spare Edward for his sake, Edward's intention was to die and Bella…Bella was just a human little sacrifice. There was nothing that they could do about it. Nothing that any of them could do about it. He was on the cusp of losing three of his children through miscommunication, terrible, horrible, horrendous miscommunication and there was nothing that he could do about it.
And it was not just those three was it, not just losing Edward and Bella, Rosalie in the physical sense but it was losing Emmett too. Without Rosalie there was no Emmett and even if they begged he could not see Emmett staying with them for longer than he had to before he would make the lone journey to Italy or perhaps just fade from sight walking around aimlessly for all eternity. Carlisle did not know what his son would do if Rosalie did not come back from Italy. If it was Esme…
He had to choke back the agony that was threatening to cloud his vision just by thinking of it. He reached out and took her hand in his without seeing and it was only when her delicate fingers engulfed his that he thought he was able to speak and even so he did not know what he could say. He too was lost in a cloud of grief, in a haze of pain and a lack of understanding about how this time yesterday they had been wonderfully confident in themselves and in their family unit.
"Alice is back at the house" Esme said and her voice was ragged with the same pain that he knew he was feeling should he be able to force the words that were in him up his throat and out of his useless mouth.
"She is very upset" Esme carried on and Carlisle resisted the urge to say something that for him was rather unkind. He loved Alice he truly did but he had to admit that she had magnificently fucked it up. He hated the use of such crass language (though with a house full of immortal teenagers he found he was hearing it in several different languages several times a day) but this time he thought it appropriate.
And the truth was the hubris was not entirely down to Alice. None of them would have ever questioned a vision from her because why would they? It wouldn't make any sense for her not to be right because her gift always was. They did rely on her and Edward too much it seemed, Jasper too. And somewhere down the line his other children, the ones who didn't have gifts but were precious in their own right, had begun to feel neglected, misunderstood and worse…belittled.
Carlisle had grown up with a father who belittled. He had never wanted to be a father like his had been. Driven his father had been by his desires and his ambitions pure as they might have been at the time. Loving he had not. Carlisle had wanted to be the loving parent in the same way that Esme had. It had been what had made their children and their family so warm and so full of love despite everything.
And what made this so utterly tragic when you stopped and thought about it for too long.
"She is dreadfully upset" Esme whispered and Carlisle nodded only half hearing the words. Esme rested her head on his shoulder and he wanted for all the world to wrap an arm around her and tug her close but he was terrified that if he let go of Emmett that he was going to try and escape again and he did not know if he had the strength to stop him.
"I left her with Jasper but she is dreadfully upset. I think the weight of what has happened has hit her—"
"Good" he said flatly. "This whole thing was avoidable Esme if she had just thought before she took the phone call. She off all people knew Edward's reasoning behind Bella and the decisions that he takes or took regarding her. She was with him after James…she knew what he was tempted to do then"
But the second he said it he knew he was being unfair. While the whole thing was avoidable he too had also known what Edward had been thinking of doing the second Bella Swan drew her last breathe. It had been what had made them leaving feel like a death sentence.
If the three of them got out of this alive Carlisle was going to hug Rosalie within an inch of her life, hug Bella, hug and then lecture Edward and then bite the damn woman himself if that was what she still wanted because this was getting ridiculous.
"You are thinking too much my darling, chalk this down to the great ironies of life. There is more than enough blame to go around here and Alice will carry her part in this for the rest of her life and considering we can die but rarely that is saying something"
He knew she was right as she so often was so he rested his head on the top of hers lips just brushing the cloud of caramel curls and breathing in the gentle scent of sandalwood and soft linin that seemed to surround Esme and wishing he could fall inside her warmth and her believe that everything would turn out that way. To have her hope was nothing short of an inspiration.
"Do you…do you think Emmett was right?" he asked softly. He did not need to tell her or mention to her what he was asking about. She knew that he was asking was Emmett right about what he had perceived their parenting styles to be, even now Carlisle was looking back and trying to think if he had intentionally or unintentionally allowed for Rosalie to think that she was unwanted, a lesser member of this family and while his mind was drawing any obvious blanks he could not help but wonder if Emmett was right, if he was right when he said that they had prioritised Edward and then Alice at the expense of their other children's feelings. Even now he could remember when Alice had turned up and she had moved in lock, stock and barrel and he'd had barely enough time to wrap his own brain around it never mind do more than check in with his children.
The problem was as well they both had gifts that they used as easily as they breathed and they were both gifts that in reality ensured little to no privacy in their house. Carlisle too could not lie and say that he was not irritated by it because he was but he had chalked it down to the occasional ruckus that came with so many of their kind living together under one roof.
He had never even considered that maybe it might be a sign of something else.
And yes he had known that Bella had been a sore to Rosalie, she had been human, the same age that Rosalie had been when she had lost everything that she had ever wanted and while she had made the best of her life it had not been a choice that she had wanted. Carlisle had accepted that when he had turned her, accepted that she had not wanted to remain frozen like this but by that point it had been too late and it had been the burden he had carried and the wrench in his relationship with her always. Bella had been a lash on Rosalie's back because she had, had everything that Rosalie had ever wanted and had seemed quite content to throw that away for Edward and while he and Alice and Esme and the rest of them had been nothing short of thrilled that finally Edward had found his happy ending he had never stopped to pull the daughter that he knew he had a contentious relationship with at best into his arms and tell her that he understood her pain and that he was sorry for it.
God what a monster he was!
Some father that he was!
If he got them all back then he was going to be different he vowed, they were going to be different, a different family, a different unit. Perhaps it did take losing someone or something to understand that there were cracks you were trying to paper over. Either way he was going to fight to restore his relationship with Rosalie, it could be better, this his most reluctant daughter, that could be better. And Emmett…his son who if he still wanted to be a part of this family would find their door always open no matter where they were or what the time of day was.
Perhaps it all showed in his face because Esme turned her own face into his shoulder and he could feel her curl in around his body and her shoulders shake with silent, tearless sobs that felt like someone was taking a knife to his heart and lumping out huge clumps and throwing them on the floor. His wife, his darling, his own angel should be nothing but happy, he had vowed happiness to Esme both in his marriage vows and in his daily vows but there was nothing that he could do, the howl of misery gripping her was also gripping him and their son sat on the ground facing the loss of his soulmate.
"We will be better" was all Esme said and he found himself listening to the fierceness of her words and clinging to them and the hope that she never lost even in the most dire of situations. "We will be better and when we get them home they will never put us through this again"
Carlisle felt the corner of his mouth lift in a smile. His wife could put the guard of the Volturi to shame when it came to temper. Christ, even thinking of his children, or Edward and Rosalie and Bella (for he did think of Bella as his child and probably always would) near the Volturi guard Jane and Alec and Felix especially made his heart hurt and his long dead heart thrash around in his useless chest.
Maybe…was it worth going to Italy with Emmett? Maybe explaining to Aro?
As soon as he thought it he knew it was a foolish thought to have. Nothing good would come of that plan.
Nothing good at all.
"Stop thinking" Emmett said suddenly and the two of them jumped apart. It had been the first words that Emmett had said all day and they both looked down at him in surprise. He turned to look at them face achingly vulnerable and heartbreak written across it in loud letters.
"Stop thinking Carlisle I can hear it even without Edward's gift, it hurts to think at the minute, it hurts to breathe. It hurts to think of other people doing it"
Esme curled her hand around Carlisle's where he had placed his hand on Emmett's shoulder but Emmett turned his head away and carried on with that thousand mile, dazed stare as if he could see what the future was, a future without Rosalie but he had no idea how he had gotten there or what to do once he had.
And then the phone rang. It's ringtone which was some woman singing a song about being young and beautiful hit them all in the clearing and Emmett blinked coming back to himself as if he was a long way away and then suddenly he was scrambling for his phone his big hands a blur. Somehow (and Carlisle who was suddenly holding his breath did not know how) he got the phone to his ear and he for a second he did not speak and then…
His whole body seemed to collapse for a second and Carlisle honest to God (blasphemy be damned) thought he too was going to break down and then Emmett spoke and the love and the pain and the desire coating the one word was enough for him to tuck his own soulmate closer to his side and vow never to let her go.
"Rosalie"
And there we go, back to Rosalie for the next chapter. See you then.
Next Chapter-Rosalie is on a plane with Bella and she rings her husband. It does not go well.
