The Subway Station
September 1st, 2015
Tuesday, 5:30 AM.
"When I see you I see you man
When you got It you got It
You know what I'm saying?"
The lyrics blared into my ears as I entered the subway station. I was the only one there since it was early in the morning. Scanning my pass and walking through the turnstile, I continued to nod my head to the music. As I walked through the station, I held onto my backpack tightly.
"Running from this crazy place I need somewhere to hide
Think I know them but sweet taste of freedom on my mind
Wondering where I should go I don't know, do I even try
I just keep my hands high and I run into the sky"
For once in my life, I was glad the train was late. I loved this time of the morning because the world hadn't even woken up yet. Everything was quiet, and I was loving it. My train rolled into the station. I stepped onboard and found a seat near the window. The night sky was very pretty, mixed with the rising sun.
"Bag man I'm a trip homie I'm fallin'
Baggie jeans, burner phone, it's ma callin'
Bags under my eyeballs, I'm ballin'
Bagage up in the backseat, I'm all-in
Tall thin, wall-eyed, see it coming
Don't speak, it's no doubt, that low humming
You hearing cause i ain't grounded
Birds fly south I'm stretching out nigga my third eye
Been blind, three times, crazy shit
Sick a lufic a missile up and a many with it
Many diddity flip the switch and the monster walk
Nuts and bolts grindin', no talk
To quote a
But such as it is, black bodies learn to fly
It's high knees to wrong high and I'm running to the sky"
Removing my backpack and setting it on my lap. I turn 'Running To The Sky' all the way up.I don't like people bothering me. So, this was my defense mechanism, carefully developed over years of being an introvert. I don't even know Daveed Diggs all that well but he has some great music, so I listened. Will I ever tell him that though? Fuck No.
" Oh I keep Runnin' (runnin'), runnin' (runnin') runnin' to the sky
Oh I keep Runnin' (runnin'), runnin' (runnin') runnin' to the sky
Oh I keep Runnin' (runnin'), runnin' (runnin') runnin' to the sky
Oh I keep Runnin' (runnin'), runnin' (runnin') runnin' to the sky"
Just as the song ended, the train stopped. As soon as I got off the train, I started walking toward the theater. When I arrived there, my crew was already pulling up at the same time. They all got out of the car and met me at the doors of the theater. I unlocked the door and we all walked in.
I turned on the lights in the building and let out a loud sigh. For the first few minutes, we stood by the entrance. "Come on," I said, knocking everyone out of their trance. "We've got a long day ahead of us." We walked into the theater and headed straight for our break room to put our things away.
We then walked to my office to get our headsets. We decorated them to fit each of our aesthetics. Once we turned them on and put them on, they left my office, leaving me to work on the pile of clothes that were on my desk. The first item I chose to start on was one of the dresses. I picked up the yellow one first and began inspecting it for any problems.
I had finished all of the costumes and delivered them to the correct dressing rooms. Then, I glanced at the clock to see that the cast wouldn't be arriving for the next two hours. So, I returned to my office and connected my Bluetooth. I began searching for a song when one of my favorite songs popped up.
Once I started the music, I began looking around the theater to see what needed to be done. The music blared through the speakers of the theater. Everything seemed fine, except for the lighting onstage, which I fixed. After I was done with everything, it was time for me to go back to my office.
I heard over the headset, "ViVi, stop being a fucking simp." I hit the little red button. "Shut it, Cam," I replied as I sat down in my chair and started up my computer. I had to get everything ready for tomorrow's show.
For the next two hours, I just sat there listening to music and tapping away at my computer.
Lin's (P.O.V)
I walked into the theater and heard loud music. I then watched as everyone from the main cast walked in and stopped at the door. "Is that Daveed's voice?"
"When the stash low and it's no cash
Get it in
And you ridin' no L's no tags
Get it in
And she lookin' like you ain't gon' smash
Get it in
But she got her legs up on the dash
Show these haters how to go"
Anthony asked, "Who is playing this at eight something in the morning?" As we walked into the theater, Daveed replied, "Someone with great music taste." We put our things down and started looking for the source of the music.
" I get it
I whip it, I flip it, I pocket the profit
Don't know when to stop it
They callin' me
Griselda the harlot
My ? is erotic
Can't walk the hill is enormous
The arm in the armrest
Click clack these dames is dormant."
We made it to the back of the theater where there was an office that was cracked open. Inside the office was a woman who was tapping away at her computer. "So, which one of you wants to knock on the door?" I asked just as the rest of the cast started walking into the theater. "I'll do it," Renee said as she knocked, making the music stop abruptly.
The woman in question walked over to the door and once she opened it, she immediately closed it. I heard laughter from the other side of the door. "Sorry!" she said as the laughter grew louder. "I'll turn the music off." I heard her say as the laughter faded. I turned to walk away, but Daveed stayed by the door. "I just wanted to say you have great music taste," he said before walking away from the door.
Thanks... I guess," the woman said as we all made our way to the stage. Just as I walked off, I heard muffled noises coming from the door. I started my way over to where both Tommy and Alex were. "Hey, do either of you know the woman that's in the back office?" I asked as I walked up to them.
"Oh, that's just Evie. She's the stage manager and seamstress. She's probably in her office with the rest of the tech crew." Tommy said as everyone started making their way to the stage.
Wait, how come you're just now asking about the office? It's right next to your dressing room," Alex said as everyone started to get into their spots. "Well, when I got here with the main cast, we heard music coming from the back rooms, so we went to see who was playing it." I said just as the woman in question walked onto the stage.
Hey, Tommy," she said, stopping once she spotted us. Evie then turned around and walked off shaking her head. "Is she good?" Tommy asked as Anthony started laughing again. "We caught her listening to one of Daveed's songs." Pippa said with a smile on her face.
"Jeez… Anyway, guys, let's get to work," Tommy said as everyone nodded.
