Cartoon's Journey into Atlantis: Introduction to Atlantis

"...in a single day and night of misfortune, the island of Atlantis disappeared into the depths of the sea." - Plato, 360 B.C."

Atlantis everyone has heard the word. It is a fictional island mentioned in Plato's works Timaeus and Critias as part of an allegory on the hubris of nations. In the story, Atlantis is described as a naval empire that ruled all Western parts of the known world, making it the literary counter-image of the Achaemenid Empire. After an ill-fated attempt to conquer "Ancient Athens," Atlantis falls out of favor with the deities and submerges into the Atlantic Ocean. Since Plato describes Athens as resembling his ideal state in the Republic, the Atlantis story is meant to bear witness to the superiority of his concept of a state.

Despite its minor importance in Plato's work, the Atlantis story has had a considerable impact on literature. The allegorical aspect of Atlantis was taken up in utopian works of several Renaissance writers, such as Francis Bacon's New Atlantis and Thomas More's Utopia. On the other hand, nineteenth-century amateur scholars misinterpreted Plato's narrative as a historical tradition, most famously Ignatius L. Donnelly in his Atlantis: The Antediluvian World. Plato's vague indications of the time of the events (more than 9,000 years before his time) and the alleged location of Atlantis ("beyond the Pillars of Hercules") gave rise to much pseudoscientific speculation. As a consequence, Atlantis has become a byword for any and all supposed advanced prehistoric lost civilizations and continues to inspire contemporary fiction, from comic books to films.

While present-day philologists and classicists agree on the story's fictional character, there is still debate on what served as its inspiration. Plato is known to have freely borrowed some of his allegories and metaphors from older traditions, as he did, for instance, with the story of Gyges. This led a number of scholars to suggest possible inspiration for Atlantis from Egyptian records of the Thera eruption, the Sea Peoples invasion, or the Trojan War. Others have rejected this chain of tradition as implausible and insist that Plato created an entirely fictional account, drawing loose inspiration from contemporary events such as the failed Athenian invasion of Sicily in 415–413 BC or the destruction of Helike in 373 BC.

It is one of the world's finest mysteries, Imagine within the island, the lost city of Atlantis was a utopian civilization and a great naval power. It was made of concentric islands separated by wide moats connected by canals that reached its center. The islands were rich in metals and minerals like gold and silver and supported exotic wildlife. But was lost forever due to events of volcanic activity and earthquakes. The Atlanteans claim the Greek gods were upset with them and they sank into the Atlantic Ocean without a trace. Many explorers and adventurers searched this lost civilization, but to no avail, and everyone mostly scientists believe Atlantis didn't exist to begin with.

But imagined what would Atlantis Look like if it resurfaced from the depths again, what would its environment look like? How would evolution drive the flora and fauna into many forms that they can only be found in Atlantis, and what would the relationship be with the Atlanteans and the Creatures of this Island? The Plants and Animals of Atlantis you're about to read are mostly fictional and fantasy, but they were devised by the minds of scientists and paleoartists based on the laws of nature and evolution. It's time to take a journey into this island of the lost city.

Cartoon's Journey into Atlantis

Hello, Everyone my next series is based on Joschua knüppe's/Hyrotrioskjan's Speculative Evolution Project, "Atlantis Bestiary. In this version, my character and my friends will wash up on the shores of Atlantis and we learn about the strange creatures of this once lost Island. It would be an explorer's guide story in the style of Alien Planet, The Future is Wild, Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson, and some bits of elements of Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I imagine the Atlanteans used their crystals to revive the animals that went extinct on their island. There will be other references involving Atlantis like Pokemon, Spongebob Squarepants, The Fairly OddParents!, Phineas and Ferb, and Jake Long.

You can help out either in the reviews or private messages with additional details, dialogues, quotes, references, and especially information on the creatures, especially the artists who designed them so I can give credit to them later on. You can check out Joschua knüppe's project under these links:
