Taylor ran.

With frantic gasps and a hammering heart, she fled, bolting through the alleyway that now seemed endless.

She screamed for help, pleading for salvation. But not a single soul lent a helping hand, instead choosing to flee. Every back and turned gaze inflicted pain but was unsurprising. Nobody would save her. Why would they? To risk their life for a stranger was the height of foolishness. Even when she begged and cried inside the suffocating confines of the locker, all she had received for her troubles were the echoes of derisive laughter and mockery.

She had been forsaken then. So why would now be any different?

Her aspirations dreamt of a hero, cradled from a desperate longing to transcend into something other than the butt of every joke. She had wanted to become something more- someone who didn't have to be saved because she knew no hero would ever save her.

Yet, here she was. Fleeing. Running. Crying. Just like she always did.

Nothing had changed. She had believed powers would make her strong. They didn't. She was still weak, too frail to withstand the challenges that confronted her.

A scream erupted from her throat as she ducked as a searing fireball whizzed past, the flickering flames dancing perilously close to her hair. Lung laughed as he pursued, relishing in sadistic pleasure, savoring the hunt like a cat hounding a mouse. She knew he missed on purpose, simply to prolong her agony that should have ended swiftly.

It was humiliating. It was suffering. It was maddening.

But she could do nothing but keep running, her feet pounding against the pavement, each step a desperate attempt to put distance between herself and the approaching predator. The rhythmic crunch of talons biting into the ground sent shivers of terror down her spine. She could have never imagined that such an ordinary sound could stoke fear so primal.

A part of her was tempted to cast a glance backward, to confront her would-be executioner with her own eyes. Yet, the dread of what she might see held her back as if the sight would shatter the fragile remnants of her spirit.

It pained her to admit, but hope still clung to her even after years of disappointment. No, more than that- she craved hope. She longed to believe that, against all odds, she could still survive. She wanted to believe that she could live.

But as people so often said, life wasn't fair. Some could bask in the radiance of a blessed existence like Gory Girl, while others would live a pathetic, downtrodden existence as Taylor Hebert. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fucking fair!

Tears and snot mingled together, saturating her mask as she sobbed while running. The weight of her despair pressed heavily upon her, threatening to crush her spirit. She wanted to scream a gut-wrenching cry, to let her anguish reverberate through the night. But she couldn't- not without wasting her precious breath. Even that basic right had been cruelly stolen from her, just like everything else in her fucking life.

After twists after turns, and leaps after hops, her journey came to an end when her foot hit a crack. What a short journey it was… She had set out, geared with hopes and dreams, only to meet her demise in a desolate alley. Alone, and ever so afraid.

Get up… Get up! She screamed inwardly, but her body refused to respond. Her legs remained still, as did her arms. Exhaustion washed over her, leaving her drained and helpless. She could only lie on her side, resigned to her fate, while the searing heat intensified and the crunch became louder.

"gOuT yoO," the monster uttered with glee, his maw twisting into a horrid smile, a thousand fangs glistening amidst the flames. At this distance, the heat was almost unbearable.

She wanted to beg, to plead for mercy. But she couldn't. To do so would be to admit her pitiful existence. Even in her state, she clung to a sense of pride. If she couldn't live a life of a hero, she would at least die as one. Her life was not in vain. She had saved lives at the expense of her own. Wasn't that what heroes did? Wouldn't Mom be proud?

But no sense of fulfillment filled her heart: no happiness or even a flicker of joy from her heroism. There was only terror, gripping her soul with an iron fist. "Dad," she whispered through sobs, reaching for a connection, a remnant of solace.

Lung paused before erupting into laughter. The guttural sound reverberated through the night, a tremor that seemed to shake the earth beneath her. She should have felt humiliated, but all she felt was relief. The longer he laughed, the longer she would live. But the laughter eventually subsided, and she knew her time had come. She would die engulfed in misery and fear, with only the solace of having lived true to her ideals to accompany her.

A burning hand extended, inching closer to her face, its owner savoring her fear. "cLaU OuT yO ayes. bUrn u. kIll u," he whispered, almost gently.

Her instincts screamed at her to advert her gaze, to close her eyes and await the inevitable. Yet, summoning the last vestiges of her courage, she launched a final futile attack, calling forth whatever insects were within reach. As expected, not a single gnat reached him as entire masses were incinerated before they could come close. All she could do was glare in desperate defiance as the scorching flames drew nearer. "Fuck you," she snarled as her hope for salvation was finally extinguished.

"nO lITTle Gurl… fUk U," he retorted and thrust his talons at her eyes.

To her shame, she flinched. To her surprise, there was no pain- for his arm was parted from the elbow.

A knight descended with impossible grace, adorned in armor as brilliant as mirrors reflecting the dragon's flames. With a light thud juxtaposing the heavy armor she bore, she landed before her. Protecting her.

Taylor found her gaze transfixed upon her resolute back, firm as the mountains. In an instant, as if a switch had been turned, her terror ebbed away and was swiftly replaced by an overwhelming sense of security, as if she had found solace within the walls of her cherished sanctuary.

Lung retreated a few steps back, snarling. But even from on the ground, she could see the hesitation in his eyes.

Taylor Hebert was saved. And on that fateful night, she bore witness to a true hero.

Present time

"Fuck!" Taylor cried out before crashing into the ground, her body skidding painfully across the cold pavement. After hours of relentless abuse, her legs had finally given out.

"Ow…" She winced as she made to stand- or tried to, only to find that her muscles could not bear her own weight.

With a sigh, she collapsed, her back laying flat on the ground as she panted in fatigue and exertion. Not a single part of her was not in pain, but oddly enough, she found herself at peace staring at the sky.

As tranquility settled upon her, memories danced within Taylor's mind- fragments of a tale, wisps of a Knight and a Dragon intertwined in notions of monstrosity and heroism. The scenes played out like vivid images, igniting an insatiable desire within her.

Like a child captivated by the swing of a bat or the snap of a goal, witnessing a true hero had set her spirit ablaze.

She was weak in more ways than one. She had to become stronger. Better. Smarter. Superior. Thus, she strived and trained, every moment filled with pain and rigor.

All so she could become like her- the embodiment of inspiration and aspiration.

For several moments, she laid there, resting from her self-imposed abusive routine. It was still early in the morning, so she did not have to worry about the indignity of getting caught sleeping in the streets.

Once her lungs stopped burning and her heart stopped pounding, she began hefting herself up, gently and carefully, in case of injury. Fortunately, after a brief self-examination, nothing appeared broken or fractured. Unfortunately, she had skinned her knee.

"That's going to leave a scar," she muttered. She should have been more upset, horrified even, by the possible disfiguration. But her looks had been a department she had given up on.

And so, she marched back home- limping and bloodied like the night she had nearly died.

Upon arriving, she cleaned and treated her wound, applying appropriate amounts of antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Once her injuries were taken care of, she got in the shower before realizing halfway that she should have applied the ointment after washing up.

After reapplying her treatment once again, she headed to the kitchen to fix breakfast. She needed to be at school within the hour.

Winslow had been shut down for the past few days and had only been reopened today. She did not know why it had been closed in the first place, and she had not cared enough to try and find out. Knowing that school, some gangbanger probably set it on fire or bombed it.

She supposed she should have been a bit more concerned, but she had been… occupied.

Taylor briefly pondered skipping class; she deserved a longer break, but crossed out the thought. Education was still important, even if her school was more akin to hell than a place of learning. Knowledge was just as vital as strength.

As silly as it might have seemed, she found herself dreading returning. Her reluctance was laughable, even from her perspective. What exactly did she have to be so afraid about? She had fought Lung. Nearly died to him even. What were Emma and her bitches compared to a living, breathing, rage dragon?

The thought of stinging her former best friend in the ass made her smile. She was tempted, eager even, to make her imagination a reality. But no. She was a hero. She was better than that.

Once breakfast finished cooking, she set up her laptop next to her plate, a piece of toast and scrambled egg. It was an old device, barely able to run the internet. But thankfully, it still worked well enough to run PHO. It had been a while since she had caught up with the latest cape news. Honestly, she should have gone on the day after the fight considering that she had made a minor splash in the cape scene. But in her trance and drunken stupor, browsing the internet had not seemed like a priority.

Okkaayyyy... Apparently, this is a thing now in Brockton Bay. First a rage dragon, now a dragon slayer? Makes perfect sense. I guess. Now all we need is Myyrdin to set up a D&D fantasy game.

But for reals. Last night, Brockton Bay was fucking lit. And I don't mean that in a cool way. I mean it was literally on fire. Jesus Christ… People could feel the fight from the other side of the city. With how loud it was, I bet good money that nobody there got a good night of sleep.

Photos and videos were circulating the internet pretty much asap but nobody knew the details other than that Lung was involved (You know, because Fire + Dragon noises = Lung) since the PRT quarantined the entire area. So for the longest time, we were all twiddling our thumbs, wandering… imagining… what the hell was going on in that god forsaken place.

Until now.

I bring all of you: Uber and Leet! Now before you flip out, just hear me out for a sec. I know that they're pieces of shit, but even shit stains are useful for something. Like as fertilizer or recording cape fights. Yes… Those dumb bastards actually recorded the battle! When I watched it, I was like, Hallelujah! I mean, holy shit. It was one hell of a throwdown.

For people who are unfamiliar with Lung, here's some background that makes this fight, and by extension the new parahuman I dubbed 'Knight', impressive. Most people don't know this, but in the past, Lung defeated Leviathan. By himself.

Lung. Beat. Leviathan.

Yes… Let that sink in for all of you. Now, some unknown, previously unnamed parahuman WRECKED his scaly hide so bad that there are still bits and pieces of him at the shore that are being sold online. (Yes, seriously. You could get a scale for $99.99) I calculated Lung's size in this fight, he was just around 40 feet tall. When Lung beat Leviathan, he was said to be 30.

Now… Let that sink in as well.

Just how strong is this parahuman? How many powers does she fucking have? I mean, I must have seen a dozen different powers on her. Man… I seriously hope she's a hero. But knowing Broctkon Bay, odds are that she's going to be an Empire. That, or a serial killer. Can't tell which is worse.

So what do you guys think? Do we have a new champion for justice? Or another insane white supremacist? Whichever she is, good luck Brockton Bay. You'll fucking need it.

P.S. Viewer discretion is advised. There is a shit ton of blood and gore. And I mean a SHIT TON.

(Update 04/15/11: I just got intel from my source. She's a hero. Woohoo! Finally some good news!)

Taylor's eyes bulged, almost threatening to pop out of their sockets as she nearly choked on her OJ.

Lung had defeated Leviathan?

And she tried to fight him?

If this were true, why on earth hadn't people known about it? She had meticulously scoured his and every Brockton Bay villains PHO page and researched every tactic and power they possessed. Yet, there had not been a hint, no inkling that he possessed the strength to go toe-to-toe with an Endbringer and win.

Sure, he had repelled the Protectorate, but even a dozen heroes paled in comparison to the trio. She had expected some inaccuracies in her research. After all, she was using the Internet. But she could not fathom that a detail of this magnitude could have been overlooked. If something as significant as this had slipped through the public's notice, what else had she missed?

Worry weighed heavily on her heart. Suddenly, her exhaustive preparation and research seemed inadequate. Operating on inaccurate information was bound to lead to fatality. Most likely hers.

"cLaU OuT yO ayes. bUrn u. kIll u."

Her hands trembled as she instinctively shut down the haunting memory. Several days and nights had passed, but the fear lingered. He haunted her dreams, plagued her recollections. The knowledge that she would be just as defenseless as that night tormented her from within.

She had been fortunate once, but she refused to naively rely on something as intangible as luck.

She needed strength. What she possessed was insufficient, and what she could gain was lacking. Lung surpassed her in every conceivable aspect. Speed, power, experience, versatility and so on. If they were to clash again, she harbored little doubt that it would end in the same outcome. He had seemed insurmountable then, and the wall had only seemed to have grown larger.

The easiest way to make up for her weaknesses was to find an ally who could complement her abilities. Her first thought was the Knight. But she had no idea where to find her, and even if she did, it was doubtful someone so strong would need someone like her.

The next most obvious choice was the Wards but… She already had enough of teenage drama. She didn't need it to infiltrate her life as a hero as well.

As for New Wave… Outing herself did not appeal to her, especially after what happened to Fleur.

Taylor sighed into her meal. Her life only seemed to become harder and harder by the day.

I don't think anyone would even contest the cape for calling themselves something over the top like Siegfried or Georgia's at this point cause they sure as hell earned the title Dragonslayer after tonight.

Taylor bristled as she read through some of the posts.

The Knight was no villain. It was naïve of her to pass judgment on a stranger's morality, especially considering how wrong she had been about her closest friend's. Yet, she felt an unwavering certainty about it.

Noble. Regal. Righteous. Virtuous. Honorable. Grand. Dignified. Magnificent. Glorious. Spectacular. Majestic.

Those were the words that attempted to capture the essence of her savior. She could have continued the list indefinitely, but the English language proved insufficient to perfectly convey the emotions she had experience that night.

Nod had his reasons, and his anger was understandable. But just because he was right didn't mean he was correct. Yes, any conflict amongst the major gangs was bound to cause casualties, some innocent. But to do nothing would only have the same result, except the criminals would still be free to carry out their villainy again and again. Eventually, the lives lost by doing nothing would far outweigh the casualties of conflict.

It wasn't like Taylor couldn't relate. She would have also been furious if her home had been destroyed by another's actions. His fears and worries were understandable, but they were not reasonable. And most of all, he directed his blame at the wrong person.

Resentment should have been directed towards her if anything.

Guilt weighed heavily upon her consciousness. She could not claim innocence. The conflict, while good intentioned, had originated from her actions, setting off a chain of events that had blossomed into this chaotic mess. Indirectly, she had been the cause of countless livelihoods being shattered. While no lives were lost, the pain of losing one's home was surely just as agonizing, especially for those already struggling to make ends meet.

She had embarked on a mission to save children, and while she succeeded, a heavy price had been paid for her actions. Consequences borne not by her but by countless unrelated others. As she read about the tragedies of her own creation, it served as a jarring awakening. This was not a game. She had known that. But now, it was a truth she understood with absolute certainty.

Next time when she fought, it had to be different. It would be different.

Ugh… She really didn't need to see that either. Using her insects as her eyes distorted her vision, but she had seen enough to be disgusted.

When the fight ended, she wanted to thank her rescuer and maybe even ask for a team-up. She didn't think the Knight would agree, but it didn't hurt to ask. But before she could even leave her hiding place, the Protectorate heroes got to the armored parahuman first, so she bunkered down to spy/research on the current situation.

From what she heard through her bugs, they were trying to recruit her into the Protectorate. By the looks of it, they had succeeded, according to Bagrat's sources. But for some reason, the Protectorate and PRT remained quiet.

The behavior was odd, even to her. She would have expected that adding someone like the Knight into their roster would have been a reason for them to celebrate. But there was nothing. Not a single announcement or update from the PRT.

She continued to read through the thread to see if she could find any answers. While quite a few shared her thoughts, there was nothing but theories and speculations.

But more importantly… there wasn't anything about her. Not even a mention.

If Uber and Leet only recorded the shore fight, then it would make sense that they missed the initial skirmish in the alley, not to mention that she stayed out of that fight entirely. Part of her felt guilty doing so for not even trying to help. But even Armsmaster and Assault had stayed out, and Knight had practically ordered her not to engage.

That she went ignored didn't surprise her. She had even expected it. Besides Lung and the Knight, she was sure that nobody else had even seen her. But still… It was upsetting.

Yes. I kid you not. On the exact same night that Lung got arrested, Oni Lee was dropped off, gift wrapped, by none other than the UNDERSIDERS. After hitting Lung's casino, they decided to do one better and steal his Lieutenant as well. Not sure what they were thinking considering that they put themselves on top of Lung's shit list, but I guess it all worked out for them in the end since the dragon man is… well… you know.

Not sure how a bunch of teenage thieves managed suicide bomb assassin but good job!

With that said, it's a shit day to be an ABB. They literally lost all their parahumans. This might really be their end. I never once thought a day like this would come tbh. But I guess if even Marquis could fall, so could they.

Anyways, cheers to one less gang in Brockton Bay!

Oni Lee was arrested?

That… That was amazing news! It sucked that it was a bunch of criminals that got him, but she wasn't going to argue with the results. With both Lung and Lee gone, the ABB was fucked. Even someone inexperienced as her could see it clearly as daylight.

But while the news lifted her spirits, it shocked her more than she thought possible. Even when she was determined to become a hero, she had never imagined that the ABB would ever fall. Especially not like this. While not as old as the Empire, the ABB had always had a presence in the city for almost her entire life. To know that they would be gone… God, she had a hard time imagining it.

Nevertheless, this was a huge victory for the heroes and she was happy about it. She really was. But… Ugh…

Taylor groaned, palming her forehead as she could feel a headache form along her temple. So this was why Armsmaster had suspected that she was a villain…

When she overheard the Heroes discussing her, she was befuddled about why they would even imagine she would be a criminal. She was fighting Lung for crying out loud! But now, knowing this… It made sense.

Fuck…

She was hoping to be an independent hero and ally with the Protectorate, but it looked like she needed to clear her name first.

On hindsight, it looked like her anonymity worked to her advantage. It was one thing to convince the heroes, but totally another to convince the public opinion. She had no idea what she would do if the entire world thought that she was one of the Undersiders.

Taylor scoffed in derision at the thought. As if she would ever join a pack of villains.

Not in this world, and not in any world.

Cheers? Are you fucking kidding me? You stupid son of a bitch. Do you know what's going to happen to us once the Empire comes? Lung was a piece of shit. The Entire ABB were shits. The only reason why we tolerated them was because the Empire will MURDER us without them. Lung and Lee were the only thing protecting us from getting genocided en masse out on the fucking streets and you one to celebrate? Go eat a dick ass hole.

Bro. Are you seriously getting upset because he's celebrating the end of a bunch of slavers? Stop being so dramatic. There's no way the Protectorate will allow something like that to happen.

No, Laotsunn has a point. The Protectorate hasn't done shit to curb down gang violence so I doubt they could stop the Empire from doing anything. At most, skinheads will lynch everyone and run away before the heroes could save anyone.

I know some people are worried, especially the asians. But I think this is a good thing for everyone. The heroes always had too much on their plates. But with the rage dragon gone, they can focus on the Empire. For the first time in my life, I actually do believe the PRT has this under control. Especially if the Knight joins the Protectorate

I don't think the Knight is part of the Protectorate. Think about it, if they got someone that strong, they would be be bragging about it. But there's nothing from their PR. Nada. Zip.

What does that tell me? That either Knight is part of the Empire or that they haven't managed to contact them.

I hate to say this, but the Nazi's got a point (Jesus what a strange thing to say). The Empire has a dozen parahumans while the ABB has none. This won't be a war. It's going to be a slaughter. They literally don't stand a chance.

As of this moment, all PRT and Protectorate personnel are on high alert after the Simurgh attacked Chochise, Alabama. Due to the unpredictability of this crisis, all non-vital personnel are to stay home until further notice.

But as of now, there is no need to panic. The attack was said to have lasted only 10 minutes, and there were no reported casualties. But due to safety concerns, Cochise will be quarantined.

► Tachcardia

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

Robby Are you fcking kidding me? The only good thing (Can't believe I just said that) about Endbringers is that they are predictable. They come every 3 months, and a shit ton of people die. The Simurgh broke both those rules at the same time. How the hell is this not worrying to you?

► Bagrat (Veteran Member) (The Guy in the Know)

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

Robby That's exactly the problem. This is the FIRST Endbringer attack that had no casualties. Ever. So why? There's a reason why the country was closed for days. So far, the attacks were predictable. They would come every 3 months, and shit ton of people would die. This time, Simurgh came early, not even two months after hitting Canberra. Without killing anyone. It's the irregularity that has people shitting their pants.

► Robby

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

Still seems like an overreaction. In the end, nothing happened.

► TRJ

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

Robby So far. The reason why the country closed down is probably because the government thought it was a prelude to a bigger attack and it is still way too early to let down our guard.

►Darkly

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

Isn't 10 minutes to short to make a Ziz bomb?

►Lasersmile

Replied On Apr 14th 2011:

10 minutes is plenty for the Simurgh to give the Fallen instructions. She doesn't need to master them, they'll probably kill themselves if she asked them to.

End of Page. 1

Huh… So that was why school was canceled.

And holy shit! What the fuck?!

Despite being the weakest and causing the least casualties among the trio, the Simurgh was the one that people feared the most. The sheer terror she instilled was so overwhelming that the world would willingly quarantine an entire city to shield the rest of the world from a potential Ziz bomb.

The revelation that her recent attack had resulted in zero casualties did not bring relief; instead, it intensified the terror. It was the unconventional nature of her actions that unsettled people.

Endbringers, for all their devastation, had always followed patterns and rules. But the Simurgh? She had always been erratic. Sometimes she would remain inactive for a year, only to strike twice in quick succession or earlier than expected. The unpredictability was nothing short of horrifying.

The theories being discussed on the forum were particularly disconcerting. Taylor knew little about the Fallen except that they were fanatics who worshipped Endbringers as deities. The idea that the Simurgh might have contacted them sent shivers down her spine.

Religious extremists were among the most dangerous criminals, as their unwavering devotion to their beliefs superseded all else. While even the vilest villains could be reasoned with to some extent, the likes of the Fallen were beyond rationality. They were already a grave threat, but who knew what level of destruction they could unleash if guided by the Simurgh's precognition?

Taylor attempted to push the troubling thoughts out of her mind. There was little she, as an individual, could do about such monumental threats. For now, she would focus on what she could change – The Empire. With the ABB gone, they were the only other power in the city and would soon be assaulting ABB-controlled territory, according to the predictions on PHO. Her help would be needed in suppressing the eventual gang war.

And besides, whatever the Simurgh was up to, it wasn't like it had anything to do with Brockton Bay.

5151AN: You will have to manage. There is no room for failure.

#Accountant#: And if I fail?

5151AN: Must you ask?

As usual, all comments and criticisms are welcome. Also, it would be useful for me to know if you like or dislike the fic and why.

P.S. I understand that PHO is an odd place to have a secret conversation but the site itself is run by a super AI named Dragon so it is pretty secure. Also, for Contessa, it wouldn't make a difference if they had the discussion on facebook or an FBI confidential server.
