After Last Bell
"Tyler put Mr. Hobbs in the hospital?" Stefan asked in shock as he stood at Elena's locker with her and Bonnie at the end of the day.
Elena bit her lip and nodded, "I heard he's suspended, but it had to have been some kind of accident... And Mr. Hobbs isn't coming back anytime soon. Ric had to cover on his planning hour. Do you believe that?"
Elena glanced around to make sure that Caroline wasn't around to heard. She was upset and would be pissed that they were discussing Tyler "behind her back" but luckily she was no where to be found right now.
Bonnie laughed, "Leave it to Ty. I heard that Kol came off as the hero of the day. He's got himself some admirers, that's for sure...I guess he's not bad, if you like that sort of thing."
"How's it going with your cousin, Bonnie?" Stefan inquired, wanting to cut off the discussion about Kol's romantic prospects.
Bonnie shrugged, "It's weird. Lucy is being like super strict about stuff. We used to get in trouble together and now she's the boss. And damned if she isn't really bossy. Dad is thrilled, though. He's going to pay Lucy and help her get on her feet again. She's just so different now, and paranoid. I guess you heard about the car?"
"Damon's car? Yeah," Stefan said, rolling his eyes. "I'm not even allowed to drive, but he has his 'baby' back and his new daddy to boot...Plus, he's now a tribrid so you can imagine what his ego is like!"
Elena chuckled, "Damon's ego is epic on a good day, but you had no business speeding like that. You left the frickin' house without even seeing me and you were still afraid of being late?"
"You don't really know Elijah well, do you?" Stefan complained. "We have to be dressed for dinner at 6 sharp or the world comes to an end. Bonnie, can you do a spell to make someone chill out? Like a lot?"
Bonnie frowned, "Nope. Lucy doesn't want me messing with magic and vampires. You know, same stuff that Grams was against. 'Don't get too involved' and 'It's not witch business.' Yet, she also got kidnapped by the Travelers! Typical."
"It will be okay, Bon," Elena comforted. "Oh, there's April. I'm driving her and Jer home. Ric has a meeting or something. Hey, I think we're going to the Lake House this weekend."
"No!" Bonnie gasped. "Tyler was having that...party. Oh, I guess that is a bust now. The Mayor will probably kill him anyway. I got to get home to before Lucy freaks. See ya."
Bonnie waved and took off leaving Stefan and Elena standing by their lockers. April was now talking to Kol at the other end of the hallway.
"Not sure if that's a good idea," Stefan whispered, eyeing the two.
"Yeah, I'll talk to her. She's way too young for that," Elena said. Then, she looked at Stefan. His blond hair was catching the sun light. "Hey, do me a favor..."
"Anything? You need help with econ again?" Stefan smiled, leaning over. He wanted to reach out and touch her long, dark hair, but that was over now.
"No, well, maybe, but that wasn't what I wanted to say," Elena said nervously. "Make up with Damon, okay? I know he's kinda being an ass but he needs you now. I worry about you, but I also worry about him. This breakup and you leaving just broke him. Please, Stefan? For me."
Stefan leaned against the locker and held his breath a moment, staring at her. Her brown eyes showed love and Stefan wanted to melt into them, but finally he replied.
"Yeah, okay. I just don't know what to say to him anymore," Stefan admitted. "He is up to something. He keeps disappearing and is really shady about it. I can't explain it, but becoming a hybrid just made him...different. But you're right, I need to be there for him. He's still my only brother even if he is now part of the Original family."
"Thanks," Elena said, wrapping her arms around him. "I'll always love both of you. You know that, right?"
Before Stefan could reply, April trotted up. Kol was behind her and remained silent.
"Did you guys hear about that teacher? Kol saved his life!" April gushed.
Stefan groaned and Elena rolled her eyes.
"Come on, April. Let's get Jer and go," Elena said, smiling at Stefan.
Stefan looked at the clock and yelled, "Kol, hurry up. We're going to miss the bus! Where's Rebekah?"
Kol looked around in confusion. "I've no idea."
"Well, find her. Come on, walk faster," Stefan urged, turning to the next hallway. "And we also have to find Aaron. Didn't I make all this clear this morning?"
Kol looked perplexed. "I don't recall you saying a word. I'll find Aaron, you look for Rebekah..."
"Just hurray," Stefan moaned.
Being without his car was a nightmare.
Lockwood Mansion
Tyler was drunk, but not drunk enough.
"I hate to say it, but we're going to have to call the Mikaelsons," Tyler finally said.
"The Originals? I heard about them in whispers," Mason attested. "They say they are dangerous as hell. What good could that possibly do?"
Tyler stood up and paced.
"Look, man," Tyler said wearily. "I don't know but Katherine Pierce is dangerous. Real dangerous. All this shit when down with some cave and my friend, Elena...I heard that Klaus was hunting Katherine for some 500 years. When I was sired to him as his hybrid, he told me to never engage with her. Never. And Klaus doesn't spook easily."
"Shit," Mason said, putting the now empty liquor bottle down and wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "I made things worse, didn't I?"
Tyler stopped, fiddling with a picture frame on his parents desk. It was just the three of them, they looked happy. What a lie!
"No, Uncle Mason, you didn't know," Tyler finally said. "But what we do now is the difference between life and death. If they think you are plotting with 'Kathy', Klaus will rip out your heart and probably eat it."
Mason laughed, "I'd like to see him try."
Tyler grimaced, "I'm not joking. We better head over there. Maybe if we tell them, they will be grateful. And also I can get some vampire blood to heal my ass! You didn't have to put so much shoulder into it..."
Mason got up and put a hand on Tyler's arm.
"Well, you shouldn't have been such a little brat. Maybe if my brother didn't ignore you so much, you wouldn't be needing me to whip your ass so hard," Mason grunted.
Tyler put the frame down. "It's not all my dad's fault. He's under a lot of pressure from being mayor and heading the founder's council..."
"Hey," Mason said loudly. "Don't make excuses for him. You sound like your mother right now. Let's just take care of this and then you can get back to being a kid again. You have a lot going on right now, too."
Tyler looked into Mason's eyes and saw caring.
"Thanks, man. I mean, if this whole thing gets us killed, at least we tried," Tyler said reluctantly.
"Nope. No way. We're going to come through on top here. If Kathy used me, then we never had a relationship to began with," Mason confessed. "You are the only family I care about and I'm not risking you. Call the Mikaelsons. Tell them we want a meeting and that we might have something to offer."
"What?" Tyler asked.
"You go get dressed. I'll let you know when I find it. Do you guys have an ax?" Mason asked.
Tyler's eyes grew wide, but he went into the garage and got what Mason wanted. What the hell he was doing was a mystery to Tyler.
Mikaelson Mansion
An Hour Earlier
Klaus strolled into Elijah's study with confidence. Enzo was toiling away at his desk.
"Brother, I think Enzo has worked hard enough for one day. Release him so we can speak privately," Klaus said smoothly.
Elijah narrowed his eyes.
"Fine, Enzo, you may leave that work there. We'll attend to the rest tomorrow. Good effort today," Elijah said.
"Ah, thank you," Enzo said, throwing down his pencil and vamping away before the elder vampire could change his mind.
"And don't kill Wes," Klaus called chuckling.
"He can't. I compelled him. Remember?" Elijah prompted. "I will need use of Wes this week. We have much to do. Now, what was so urgent you interrupted the boy's studies?"
Klaus shrugged, "Oh, Tyler Lockwood called. He and his uncle are coming over to speak to us about an urgent matter. He wouldn't say what over the phone."
"Interesting," Elijah said dryly. "Now, where is your son? He failed to do any of his chores today. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him."
Klaus has been working on researching the Armory, but he hadn't gotten far.
"I do not know. I'll find him. He should be at the meeting. It will give him experience in such matters," Klaus purred. "Get the door if they arrive."
"Hmm," Elijah said, getting out his notebook.

Klaus' Secret Room
Damon woke up in a daze. He lay slumped at the bottom of the hidden door leading into the tunnels that ran under the town. Had he been in them? Damon's mind was foggy and he couldn't think straight. He was so tired.
Something was drawing him there, but what, he did not know. Klaus had expressly told him not to tip the others off as to his secret room nor the connecting passage.
"Damon! Is this where you have been running off to?" Klaus growled, his blue-green eyes sparkling with anger.
"Ummmm, yeah, sorry," Damon replied. "I lost track of time..."
"You are not supposed to be down here alone at all!" Klaus fired back. "I think I owe you a good dose of the hairbrush before bed tonight. But right now the Lockwoods are coming. Tyler said it was important. Come now. And you have leaves in your hair! Where you in the tunnel?"
"I don't think so," Damon said, trying to shake off the exhaustion. "Give me a hand here."
"I'll give you a...," Klaus fumed, pulling his son up carefully. "Have you been drinking?"
Damon thought, "Yeah, I had a nip earlier...So what?"
Damon saw several empty wine bottles discarded on the floor, but he didn't remember drinking them.
"That's bloody it. You can't hide this from me," Klaus snapped, toeing the empty bottles. They had discussed Damon's day drinking and he had vetoed it, but now he was lying. He grabbed Damon and began to pepper his jeans covered behind in smacks.
Whack. Whack. Whack! Whack!
"Ow! Hey, wait! Jeez," Damon yapped, as he stomped and tried to throw his hands back. Klaus just slapped them away.
Smack. Smack. Smack. Smack. Smack.
"You apparently need a good spanking to sober you up," Klaus roared, descending a flurry of whacks lower on Damon's tight buns. Whack! Whack!
"OH! AHHH, I'm s-sober," Damon shrieked, as Klaus spanked him firmly in a circle, like he was a small boy. Whack! Whack!
"Good," Klaus said, breathing heavily, giving him one last firm swat across both cheeks. WHAM! "Now, fix yourself up. We have business. We'll deal with the rest tonight, or rather the hairbrush will..."
Damon realized that the intense whacking had cleared his head, but even his hyper fast healing couldn't compete with Klaus' strength. His bottom stung and he rubbed at it heartily.
"Owwww, that hurt!" Damon whined, he realized he had tears in his eyes.
Klaus sighed and shook out his hand.
"You are lucky we have guests arriving," Klaus went on. "Brush the debris out of your hair. Let's go."

Elijah's Office
The introductions were made and Klaus and Elijah sat at the table in the middle of the lavish room. Elijah noticed that both his new nephew and Tyler seemed reluctant to sit.
"Gentleman, please. Have a seat. Would you like some wine, Mason? Damon, perhaps get Tyler a soda?" Elijah said smoothly.
"Oh, so I'm the servant now?" Damon groused.
Klaus gave him a stern look and Damon went to call for refreshments with a loud sigh. He wasn't doing that himself.
Klaus grinned, "I apologize for my son. Like Tyler during his time as a hybrid, he is willful and temperamental. How goes regular wolf life for you, Tyler?"
Tyler looked down, mumbling, "Not great. I got suspended from school. But your brother Kol made out like a freaking hero. Hope he can't get anyone at school pregnant. The girls were all over him."
Mason patted Tyler on the back, saying, "It's okay. All over, bud. We're here to square things up and live by the pack code. We got this."
Klaus was intrigued, "What do you know of pack law, Mason? Did you not grow up unaware of the blessings of your heritage?"
"I did not, as you know," Mason stated, feeling uncomfortable.
Damon came in with the drinks and set them down a little roughly.
"Son, mind yourself," Klaus warned lightly.
Damon sneered and sat down heavily and then gasping a little.
"Yeah, fine," Damon replied, shifting again.
"Sorry, Mr. Lockwood, continue," Elijah prompted, glancing at Klaus questioningly.
"I triggered my curse in Florida. I now realized that I was being used and maybe even compelled," Mason started. "The girl said her name was Kathy and she looks exactly like Tyler's friend..."
"Elena," Tyler finished. "It has to be Katherine, right? She wanted something from Mason. She set him up."
"What did she want, Mason?" Elijah asked tightly. Katherine was always a sore subject between him and Niklaus.
"A grimoire from a witch who was burned in 1864," Mason said. "She thought it might have been hidden in my ancestor's things from the founding. But Tyler and I ransacked the house and we found nothing."
"The stealing, they ought to call it, not the founding. And no, you wouldn't have found that stuff in your house," Damon intoned. "And that's Emily Bennett's grimoire. I would think that Jonathan Gilbert had it. That freak was always passing off Emily's magic as his own devices. A fraud and a cheater...I could call Ric and see if they still have Gilbert's old crap. But the question is, why did Katherine want it?"
Elijah stood up, "And what will she do to get it?"
Klaus pulled out his cell phone, "I am calling Ric. This, along with the Traveler invasion, is leaving a bad taste in my mouth."
Mason looked at Klaus, "Traveler? Funny you said that, Kathy told me that her father was a Traveler..."
Klaus and Elijah exchanged a look. Klaus paused and held the phone.
"Damon, did Katherine ever mention that to you?" Klaus asked.
"Never," Damon said. "I mean, she even acted clueless as to Emily's magic. She never breathed a word about her family."
Elijah frowned, "Perhaps that is because Niklaus slaughtered them?"
Klaus rolled his eyes, "She turned herself just to vex me, Brother. What was I supposed to do?"
Elijah waved him off. "Mason, did 'Kathy' say anything else about her family?"
"Just that she had a daughter," Mason said. "She said they took her away because she wasn't married."
"A daughter?" Elijah said. "Katerina had a child?"
"Ah, Elijah is surprised. Mason you have done the almost impossible and shocked my older brother," Klaus joked. "Now, let's see if Ric can shed light on this..."
Klaus stepped into the living room and spoke to Ric privately.
Damon yawned and acted bored.
Klaus came back saying, "Jeremy is looking in the journal for information now. Also, they want to ask Dr. Maxfield if he can cover that chemistry class. Apparently, someone almost blew up the teacher in class...Yes, Ric, I'm here..."
As Klaus went back to his call, Mason couldn't help but laugh at his nephew's claim that it was just an accident.
"Remember, you were going to send flowers? Maybe pay the man a visit?" Mason prompted.
"Yeah, yeah," Tyler replied gruffly.
Klaus hung up.
"Ric is on his way with the journal," Klaus explained. "I'm going to go speak to Wes. Damon, why don't you give Mason and Tyler a quick tour?"
"No, we don't want to be a pain," Mason said politely.
Damon groaned, but Elijah gave him the eye.
"No, it's no trouble," Elijah responded. "I need to check on my children. Apparently, they had great fun with their cousin Damon today."
"Yeah, well, I have a few tricks up my sleeve," Damon said mildly. "Follow me, the living room is out here..."
Elijah's Study
Tyler and Mason had left after Elijah tried to figure out how Katherine was going to contact him. Mason said 'Kathy' just showed up at intervals. Elijah had figured she had a witch who performed locator spells on Mason...She could show up at any point.
Damon sat down at the table and said, "I think I found something."
Jeremy peered over his shoulder. Stefan, Elijah, Klaus, Wes, Ric, Jeremy, and now Damon crammed into the small office.
"Oh yeah, that could be it," Jeremy said. Damon glared at him and elbowed the younger human out of the way.
Damon read,"'The Fell Family believed it should be I, not them, who protected the witch's spell book. But I feared she would haunt me from the hereafter. They mocked my fear but it was Giuseppe Salvatore who removed my fear. He told me he would protect the secret of the spell book. He said he would carry it to his grave.'"
Ric frowned, "It's in his coffin! But what is so important about this grimoire?"
"It's Emily Bennett's," Stefan explained grimly. "She created the spell to seal the tomb. When Bonnie's Grams reversed it, it took so much power it killed her. With the spell, any witch could perform it."
"We cannot let Katerina Petrova get that spell book," Elijah said. "Why does she want in the tomb?"
Jeremy leaned forward and tried to grab the book from Damon unsuccessfully.
"Anna said that Pearl's best friend was in the tomb," Jeremy said in confusion.
"I thought Katherine was in there, too," Damon admitted. "But she wasn't. She did let Pearl get trapped and let her rot in there for all these years. Why try to get her out now?"
Stefan shrugged, "When has Katherine ever made sense about anything?"
Klaus grumbled, "If she is involved with these Travelers, I will finally end her miserable existence! Let's get the spell book now."
"We haven't even dined," Elijah protested.
"It can wait," Klaus determined.
Damon had been flipping through the spell book and he stopped near the end.
"Gilbert, you missed a pretty important entry. Maybe you should stick to drawing and let the sleuthing to us?" Damon snapped, swiping Jeremy lightly on the head with the diary.
"OWwwwww," Jeremy yelped.
Klaus grabbed the book and read gravely from the page, "'The wood from one tree and one tree alone, an ancient white oak, would bring death to an Original vampire. When the tree burned, all hope was thought lost...But the ash from the tree was saved, and witches forged a dagger to which the ash could be bonded. This alchemic bond provided the necessary poison to kill an original vampire It must be brandished by humans alone, for it will bring death to all demons who wield it.'"
Wes cleared his throat.
"The Augustines never had this information. It's curious that Dr. Gilbert didn't mention it," Wes admitted.
"I thought Jonathan Gilbert was a writer? Not a doctor," Jeremy mumbled.
Wes looked up. "Not your ancestor, your father? Oh, you didn't know? I thought he would have shared it with you and your sister..."
Jeremy froze, "My dad wasn't an Augustine? He was the town doctor..."
"Who do you think recruited me to the Augustines? Grayson was my mentor and taught me everything about vampires. It's just curious he never shared about the white oak, if he had access to this information," Wes said evenly.
"No, you're a fucking liar," Jeremy yelled. "Ric, let's leave. I can't stand here and listen to this."
Ric stood and said, "Yeah, Jer, calm a little. We'll go. I'll meet you in the car."
Jeremy took the keys and ran outside.
Ric looked at Wes, "This true? Dr. Gilbert was an Augustine?"
"Yes, I gave you all the membership lists...I assumed you knew," Wes pointed out.
"I must have missed it," Elijah admitted.
"Any other Gilberts on there that we should know about?" Klaus pressed.
"Not that I know of," Wes claimed. "I would have tried to recruit Elena in the future...especially, if she follows in her father's footsteps of studying medicine."
"You're a piece of work," Ric sneered.
"That's rich coming from a former hunter," Wes snarled back. Ric looked down and shook his head in disgust.
"Wes, you need not harass Ric," Elijah chided. "Now, let's go get that journal. Stefan, Damon, I assume you would like to do the honors."
"Gladly," Stefan smiled.
"And I'll help," Damon assured him, nodding at his little brother. "It's not everyday we just to raid the tomb of the man who killed us!"
"But I did get him back for that," Stefan added.
"Yes, you did, Stef," Damon confirmed.
