Mystic Falls High School

Morning

Earlier

Kol dragged himself into Ric's room in the morning. Elijah had dropped him off early to speak to Ric. There were a few faculty members milling about, but it was early and no other students were present.

Dorian came out and saw Kol standing in front of the door.

"Kol, right? I'm Dorian Williams. Yeah, I'm the one who had to get Ric some pants yesterday. Not cool, man. I think I saw you in the library yesterday," Dorian said, extending his hand. "Ric's in there. Go on in."

Kol nodded, returned the hand shake, and then paused. "Thanks, I think. See you in the library."

"Ric? Hey, um," Kol started awkwardly, standing at the doorway. Ric was at his laptop typing.

"Oh Kol, I've been expecting you," Ric said firmly. "Come in and shut the door."

Kol sighed and shut and locked Ric's classroom door.

"Sorry about...yesterday," Kol said, looking at his feet. This was terrible. He'd rather get the dagger than face up to Ric.

"A lot of weird and awful things have happened to me," Ric started. "But that had to be the oddest. I still can't believe you did that. I am really disappointed in your behavior."
Kol felt tears prick his eyes.

"Aye, me too. I thought it was just a...prank. My brothers said I have to show you my backside," Kol said, unbuckling his belt and slacks.

Ric laughed roughly, "Whoa! I will see it in a minute when I bend you over the desk for the paddle. Right now, I think we need to talk."
Kol's face glowed hotly.

"I also have an apology letter. I had to write it after I got thrashed," Kol confessed. "I got a sound dose of the hairbrush and then a switching."
"Oww," Ric winced in sympathy for a moment. "I am sure you got punished, but in this case, you kinda deserved it."
"I know," Kol concurred. "I shall not fight you again. I should have just accepted the consequences without complaint. Can you forgive my impertinence? Just this once."
Ric stood up.

"I think I can," Ric said. "But first you need to meet with the 'attitude adjuster."

Ric pulled out a heavy oak paddle.

"Ah, that looks formidable. I am still kind of sore from last night," Kol pleaded.

"Just like a weak and puny human, huh?" Ric quipped, swinging the paddle. "Now, bend over. I think five will do it."

Kol started to lean over the desk before Ric reminded him to drop his pants.

"And your underwear," Ric said wryly. "And Kol, this is gonna hurt."
Kol grimaced and bared himself, leaning over the desk.

Ric was amused to see that Kol's rear was pale and healed, but it wouldn't be pale for long.

Crack!

Kol shot up and clasped his behind with an "AHHHH!"

Ric pushed him back down and continued the paddling. He may be human, but he swing crisply and snapped his wrist at the last second.

"Four more to go. You will not disrespect me again," Ric warned, drawing back for another whack.

Crack!

"Ohhhhh," Kol moaned, this time holding position, but shifting his feet.

"And we're going to do this the next two mornings," Ric shared.

Crack!

Kol sniffed and let out a cry of agony. He kicked up his right foot and Ric waited a few seconds before giving him the last night in quick succession.

Crack!

Crack!

"Arghhhh," Kol moaned and then stood up, his pants around his ankles now.

His bottom was lit up like a Christmas tree where the paddle had struck.

"Ric, I-I am r-really s-sorry," Kol sniffled miserably.

"Now, you can sit and read me that apology note," Ric said, putting the paddle in his closet.

Kol wiped after the stray tears with the back of his hand and obeyed. He didn't want an extra whack with that paddle. He wasn't even sure he could sit.

Mikaelson Mansion

Klaus let himself into Wes' room and made his way to the hidden closet. Bonnie had closed it, sealing it again. He tried to pry it open. Maybe there was something useful in those grimoires and magical ingredients.

It was futile, only a witch could open the closet. Maybe he'd ask Damon to try later.

The resurrection of the animals disturbs him. He wished that Ric's friend Dorian still had access to the Armory archives. Somehow, they had to find out more about this new power Julian had. To raise the dead when against all the laws of nature. When his mother had done it, nature rebelled by locking the Originals out of the homes of humans uninvited. Then, there was the terrible, unceasing need for blood. What was the price of bringing back life?
Klaus got up and left the room troubled. Witches were a secretive lot. Who would know of such things? Klaus aimed to find out.

Mystic Falls High School

Dismissal

Wes had tried to talk to Aaron earlier at school, but the day was hectic. He was fortunate to only be teaching chemistry, which he knew inside and out. However, he realized that he didn't really know what he was doing with students.

Nessie had stayed briefly after to show him her new cell phone and chat.

"My dad finally got it for me so he can keep tabs on me," Nessie had shared. "I had forgotten to get my little sister off of the bus and he totally freaked."
"Oh, that's not good," Wes had said, cleaning up some stray papers and binders. "I'll have to tell your dad what a big help you've been. I guess it's pretty clear but I never really taught before."

"But you're doing great!" Nessie had gushed. "That lab today was awesome. I can't wait to see what we are doing tomorrow."
Wes looked up surprised and smiled. Then, Aaron walked in.

"Hey Aaron, you catching a ride with me?" Wes inquired, packing up his bag for home. He had labs to mark and a hundred other things to look over.

"Yeah, I guess," Aaron said. "Hey Nessie."
"Hey Aaron, I actually got permission to check out this Mystic Grill that everyone hangs out at. Want to come?" Nessie asked, toying with a fake lip ring that she had put on for the day.

Aaron looked at Wes and Wes had replied, "Yeah, you kids go. Have fun. Aaron, I can pick you up later."

"Cool. Come on, Aaron. A bunch of other kids are going to be there. I heard they have peanut butter blasts with whipped cream on the bottom and really good fries," Nessie had coaxed. "On me..."

To Wes' surprise, Aaron had agreed.

Wes said, "I'll walk you guys out and you can throw your backpack in the car. Thanks for inviting him, Nessie. Aaron needs to hang out with kids his age. I know I am dull company and irritate him. Here, I'll foot the bill this time."
Wes got out his wallet and gave Aaron a twenty dollar bill.

"Um, thanks, Wes," Aaron had said sheepishly. "Sorry about last night."

"Me, too," Wes replied, grabbing his things. He smiled when Nessie grabbed his coffee cup and dangled it near his face.

"You can't leave this, Dr. Whitmore," Nessie chided. "We don't need you catching on fire like the last teacher. I heard he used to doze in class."
Wes laughed and defended, "I think those rumors are a bit far out there, but thanks, Nessie."

The trio walked out of the science wing of Mystic Falls High and past Bonnie and Elena.

***
"Tyler and Matt are both sick...Hmm, I don't buy it," Elena snarked.

"Yeah, Matt's attendance is okay, but Tyler never misses a day," Bonnie agreed. "Caroline said she was getting worried."

"Where is she? Did she head over to the Lockwood's?" Elena asked, toying with her brown hair.

"Yes, I think," Bonnie said. "I better go. Lucy wanted me to go through some spells with her. She's like quizzing me on stuff. I never should have said I was the more powerful witch, now she is showing me all the crap that Grams never did...or didn't want me to know."

Elena shrugged, "Well, fire magic is dangerous. I'm not sure you should have told Kol about that one. He said he was going to start training Damon. Can you see him like lighting a fire under Stefan's ass?"
The girls giggled at the thought.

"Yeah, damn, I hadn't thought of that," Bonnie admitted. "But I would like to see Damon get control of his shit. He can't keep getting possessed over and over again. Truthfully, I didn't know witches could even do that."

"Okay, I'll catch you later. April and Jer are probably waiting for me," Elena said, getting out her car keys. "Call me if you hear about Ty and Matt."
"You, too," Bonnie said. "I'm going to miss you this weekend."
"Why don't you come to the Lake House? I'm sure Jenna and Ric won't care," Elena said, as they walked out.

"Ugh, I would love to, but I have to ask Lucy," Bonnie sighed. "Plus, my dad said he was going to try to be home this weekend...Can I let you know?"
"Yeah, of course," Elena said. "It would be nice to have you there when we tell April about the supernatural. I'm not sure she's going to even believe us. You could levitate her or something!"

Bonnie's brown eyes were incredulous, "Yeah, that wouldn't freak anyone out. Girl, you are nuts. Bye."

Bonnie got into her car and snickered. Sometimes Elena had crazy notions. Plus, she didn't know that spell-yet.

Lockwood Mansion

After School

Tyler and Matt walked in and a second later, Mason exploded, "There you two are! I was ready to call the Sheriff!"

Tyler put up his hands, "Uncle Mason, calm down. We had a hell of a day!"

"Skipping school. The secretary lady called and I looked like a total ass. I covered for you, but I've been calling since 11am."

Tyler gulped and pulled out his phone.

"Sorry, man, I turned it off because Caroline was all over my shit. We can explain," Tyler said seriously.

Matt hadn't said a word and Mason turned to him.

"Matt, what it is? You look like you're going to be sick," Mason asked, concerned.
"Um, yeah, it's not good," Matt started. "Can we sit? I feel dizzy."
Mason took Matt by the arm and sat in the living room. He had cleaned up until the phone call and then spent the day driving around looking for Tyler's car.

"Here, sit," Mason said. "Tyler, grab him some water. Now, what happened?"
Matt broke down in sobs.

"My s-sister, Vic," Matt heaved. "She g-got attacked by the c-camp vamps and..."
Matt couldn't go on. Mason sat on the highly lacquered coffee table and patted his knee.

Tyler came back with a water bottle and opened it for Matt.

"Here, man," Tyler said, waiting until Matt could speak. When he couldn't, Tyler answered, "Vicki turned. She's a vampire now. They couldn't save her."

Mason squeezed his eyes shut.
"Oh man, I'm so sorry," Mason said. For a werewolf, this news was almost worst than death. "Did they catch the bastards who did this?"
Matt croaked, "Not yet. But she's over at the Salvatore Boarding house locked in a cell. I feel like she wanted to eat me."

Tyler sat on the arm of the sofa.

"She was pretty hungry," Tyler confirmed. "But that other camp vamp, Pearl, is going to look after her. I tried to tell him that she'll get through this."
Mason snapped out of his anger and nodded, "Oh yeah, a couple of months and she'll be great. Better than great. You know, she'll be, ah, immortal. But I know this is a blow..."

Matt wiped at his eyes.

"I thought she was finally gonna get clean this time and everything would go back to normal," Matt commented. "But no, now she will be different. The way she looked at me...it was like she was already one of them. I guess she is."

Mason itched his shoulder and replied, "Yeah, it's not going to be the same, but she's still your sister. You are going to need some time to get used to the idea, though. Why don't you go rest a little? We'll order in tonight."

Caroline burst through the door hollering, "Tyler Lockwood, where are you?"

Tyler groaned and got up to face his angry girlfriend.

"Care, we're in here," Tyler yelled back.

"Seriously? You skip school and then don't answer your damn phone," Caroline ranted, as she came into the living room.

"Hey, Caroline," Mason said quietly, eyeing Matt.

"Who died?" Caroline asked bluntly.

Matt sobbed, "Vicki."
"What?" Caroline pressed. "I thought she was in rehab! Oh my God, I can't believe this."
"It's not like that, Care," Tyler said, grabbing her slender arms. "She's a vampire now."
Caroline's eyes got wide.

"Oh Matt, I'm so sorry. What happened?" Caroline questioned, rushing over to sit by him. She put an arm around him as he wept more. Tyler explained what happened.

"I'll call my mom. I know she and her new deputy were out looking for the escaped vampires like all night. Jeez, this is crazy," Caroline gushed. "A vampire? Vicki is now a vampire. I can't believe it."

Mason grumbled, "And she is with Kathy. Hopefully, this Pearl has a level head on her."

"Yeah, she seems like she has her shit together. She had Matt drinking tea and eating cake all afternoon," Tyler answered.
"It was good cake," Matt admitted. "But all Vicki wanted was blood. Lots of blood..."
Caroline looked at Tyler and Mason helplessly as Matt dissolved into another round of tears. She felt like crying herself. They never should have opened that cave again.

Mikaelson Mansion

Like he had promised, Finn had tucked Rebekah in the night before and asked her if she wanted to go over to the site of the new house with him and Sage. She accepted eagerly.

"Marcel and I always dreamed of building a home together," Rebekah had mused.

Sage had taken her arm, saying, "You'll have to tell me about him. Marcel sounds like a wonderful person."
Rebekah had sniffed, "He was. For me, it's only been a few years since we were together, though we tried to hide our affections from the others. We often fell short. I miss him."

The ladies walked on and Finn told Elijah they were leaving. Enzo asked to come also.

Elijah let the children watch t.v., but had some errands to run.

"Would you like to come to the pet store?" Elijah asked. "I was going to purchase Mr. Slithers an aquarium and some proper food."

"No, Daddy, I don't like it there," Julian intoned. "The animals make me sad. Some don't like the cages and Sage said I couldn't let them out."

Finn and Sage had taken the kids to buy dog supplies days earlier, but it hadn't gone as they planned. Julian had a meltdown and Indy became upset.

Elijah smiled wryly, "That's okay. I know it's hard for you. I will see if someone can watch you. I won't be gone long. Then, you can help me make dinner for the others."

"Yay, can we make 'paghetti?" Indy lisped.

"Yes, that's a terrific idea. I think everyone like spaghetti and we can throw in some meatballs and breadsticks," Elijah chuckled. "Let me see if I can find Uncle Niklaus for you."

Damon walked in from the Lockwood Mansion.

"Ah, so there is some news," Damon said quietly, telling him about Vicki Donovan turning. "And no sign of Frederick or any of the others. Liz is putting out an APB on them in case they fled city limits."
"Oh dear," Elijah said in an anxious tone. "That's not good news. I hope they find them soon before they do more damage."
"The council will not be happy about this," Damon went on. "But Tyler said something odd about the Mayor and his wife being out of town...Maybe I am being paranoid, but it struck me as odd timing."
Elijah smiled, "Yes, leave the paranoia to your father. Say, would you watch the twins for a bit. I need to head to the pet store. And maybe I'll take a spin around and see if I can locate this deviant vampire."
Damon agreed, "Yeah, I can do a little babysitting. Go. I got this."

"You sure?" Elijah prompted. "No snacks. We'll have spaghetti tonight."

"No snacks. Noted," Damon confirmed, winking at Julian.

Elijah thanked his nephew and headed out. He wasn't afraid of snakes, but sure as hell wasn't eager to hang out in the attic with that python all over the place.

***
Damon smirked, "What are we watching?"
Indy told him about the show as she petted Ioana's soft belly.

Julian was talking to his shepherd, Andrei.

"Andrei thinks you smell funny," Julian blurted out.

Damon sniffed his arm pits and said in horror, "Oh no, I forgot to take a bath this week. I might stink!"

Julian and Indy squealed with laughter.

"No, you smell like a doggy," Julian chuckled. "Like Uncle Nik!"

"That's because I am one," Damon said in excitement. "I can turn into a big wolf!"

"Let us see," Indy begged, jumping up and hanging on Damon.

Julian followed her lead. "Yes, we need to see!"

"But I was going sneak you guys some ice cream," Damon reasoned. "Wouldn't that be more fun?"
"No, we'll spoil our appetites," Indy chided. "Daddy said no snacks before dinner."
"You are his kids, aren't you?" Damon said ruefullly.

"Please, Damon. Let us see!" Julian begged, his face lit up with enthusiasm.

Damon looked down into his blue eyes and felt himself change his mind. What would it hurt? Well, it would break all 206 bones in his body, but Klaus said if you gave into the shift, it got better.

"Okay," Damon said. "I'm going to go into the study. I'll shift, but only for a little bit. Tell your dogs not to get too excited. Okay?"

"Yes! I'll tell them," Julian proposed, letting go of Damon and going to communicate with the dogs.

Damon went into the study and stripped. He had only done this a few times, but found the process started quickly.

"Argggh," Damon moaned as his left femur cracked. After that, it happened in a blur as his mind shifted with his body.

Damon felt fur sprout and he arched his back and howled.

Julian, Indy, and their dogs ran into the study but Damon leapt out, startling the children.

"Indy, he did it!" Julian marveled in awe.

Damon was covered in sleek grayish fur and his eyes were yellow.

"He's so big," Indy gushed.

Damon caught a scent and ran. He trotted up the stairs and pushed open the heavy door of his bedroom as the children ran after him.

"Damon, wait!" Julian yelled, but Damon was not leaping onto the huge bed.

"Whoa, his room is big," Indy noted, as Julian watched Damon sniffing the covers. Before the boy could respond, Damon rushed past them, hot on a new scent. He loped back into the hallway, stopping at the attic door.

"He wants to go up," Julian breathed. His dark face was worried, Damon seemed menacing and fierce at that moment.

"But Daddy said not to," Indy reminded her twin. She chewed on her pinkie finger nail nervously.

"But he's a wolf," Julian reasoned. "Not a person now."

Indy shrugged and watched as Julian opened the door. Damon, in his large wolf form, did not hesitate. He raced up the steep stairs and howled again.

"Uh-oh," Indy said.

Klaus came out of his bedroom. He had been trying to read through some old grimoires in various languages. He put the book he was holding on a table in the hallway.

"What was that?" Klaus asked.

The twins looked at each other in alarm. They heard a sharp snarl and then a whimper.

"Stay here," Klaus warned, heading up to the attic.

Klaus saw Damon on his haunches, panting. He was yelping and barking in intervals.

"What the hell are you doing?" Klaus yelled. The python was on the floor coiled around itself, but Damon's form was ignoring it.

Klaus opened his senses, smelling the air. He could smell Damon, the musty odors from old clothes and boxes and that spicy scent again.

"Damon, back up," Klaus growled, nearing his son. But Damon's hackles were up, he looked ready to attack. Then, Klaus saw her.

A small girl, about nine years, with hazel eyes and freckles. She also had a terrible scar on her left cheek...

Klaus went to hold Damon back when he felt a wave off...pure magic. He faltered and fell to his knees, clutching his head. It wasn't pain, it was weakness.
The girl, her face caked with dirt and grime, crawled forward and touched Damon's fur.
"Now," the girl said, her hand glowing, lit from within for a brief second.

Damon's howl was cut off and his form collapsed to the plank flooring. Damon thrashed as he turned back into a human, naked and thrashing.

"Stop!" Klaus called out weakly. "Don't hurt him."

The little girl replied, "I wasn't gonna, but he was gonna hurt me."

Damon turned and curled up in a ball.

Klaus recovered and found an old wool blanket to cover his son's nudity.

"Sweetheart, what's your name? What are you doing in the attic?" Klaus asked, seeing that Damon was unharmed.
"I-I'm Ava, mister. I helped the animals," Ava admitted.

"But how?" Klaus pressed, trying to sit Damon up.

"Don't know," Ava said, caressing her scarred face unconsciously. "It just happened...Don't kill me!"
