Lockwood Mansion

Morning

Mason dragged himself out of bed before the boys went off to school. He felt weird staying in his brother's and sister-in-law's massive bedroom so was crashing in one of the guest rooms. Mason wasn't surprised that Carol had equipped it with extra toiletries, there was even a t.v. and an alarm clock. He had set it, but hit the snooze button several times before finally getting up.

"Guys, are you up?" Mason hollered, after using the bathroom and splashing cold water on his face.

Tyler yelled back, "Yeah, man. We're up."

Mason went into Matt's room.

"How you doing today, buddy? Feeling better?" Mason asked, as Matt was putting on his socks.

Caroline had stayed the night before and comforted Matt about his sister's turning.

"Yeah, I'm better. Thanks," Matt said, trying to smile.

"He better be. We have baseball practice today. Coach is gonna be pissed we skipped yesterday," Tyler said, coming into Matt's room.

"Well, I ain't too happy about it either," Mason said, glancing at Matt. "You two do it again and I'm going to lit up your asses. Got it?"

Tyler grimaced and nodded, but Matt just laughs, thinking Mason was ribbing them.

"We won't," Matt said. "Vic is in pretty good hands at the boarding house, I think. Miss Pearl's daughter is starting school today. She asked me to check in with her."
Tyler was fixing his hair in Matt's dresser mirror and leaned over to use his deodorant.

"Really, man? That's gross," Matt grumbled, yanking it out of Tyler's hands roughly.

"I'm out," Tyler said glibly. "Hey, Uncle Mason, any word from my parents?"

Mason shook his head. "I tried to call your mom, but the voicemail box was full."

"I kinda thought they would be back by now. Or at least called," Tyler said.

Mason dodged the question. "I'll head to the store today. Let me know what you guys want. But there's a bunch of deodorant and tooth paste in my closet. Help yourself, Ty."

Tyler jogged off to go check out the supplies, leaving Matt and Mason alone.

Matt leaned in to Mason.

"Are you sure the Mayor and Mrs. L. are okay? She might not be around a lot, but she is usually up Ty's ass about his school crap and stuff," Matt whispered.

Mason looked behind him and shut the door partly.

"Honestly, I'm getting worried, too," Mason admitted. "Someone from my brother's staff called to get a signature. They seem to think he was sick with a virus. I'm going to check in with the Sheriff and see what the hell is going on. Don't mention this to Ty, though, not yet."

"Yeah, no worries there," Matt grinned. "I can keep my mouth shut."

"Want me to make you some breakfast? I can't really cook, but I can make eggs or something," Mason offered.

"Nah, we'll grab something on the way to school," Matt said, picking up his MFHS jacket.

Tyler came back and told Matt to hurry up from the hallway.

"Hey, tomorrow is the full moon," Mason reminded him.

"I won't turn," Tyler said. "When I came back from being a hybrid, my curse went dormant again. But have fun with that."

"Kathy said something about the witches making moonlight rings...I might try to get one. You know, save myself the agony of chaining myself up in those old tunnels," Mason grinned.

Tyler looked at him in concern. "I didn't know you were still talking to her."

"Yeah, well, she's pretty persistent and I don't do well with dry spells," Mason chuckled.

"Yeah, me neither," Tyler agreed, as Matt punched him in the arm.

"Well, wear a rubber. You get the Sheriff's daughter pregnant and getting kicked off the baseball team will be the least of your worries. Plus, I'll kick your ass."

Tyler patted his wallet. "I got it covered, but thanks for making shit awkward. See ya."

"Maybe I'll stop by after practice? It's been a long time since I've seen the old stomping grounds. Be good, guys," Mason said, yawning. He was heading back to bed. It was way too goddamn early.

Mikaelson Mansion

Elijah woke up to the kids jumping on his bed.

"Whoa, what is this?" Elijah said, laughing. He pulled the twins to him and kissed them on the head. "I must have overslept."

Indy and Julian scrambled off the bed, as Ava stood back a distance watching. The dogs were sniffing around the room, wagging their tails.

"Uncle Nik said we could come in," Julian laughed.

"Oh, he did, did he? It is rare that he rises before I do," Elijah noted. "Who wants pancakes again?"

"We already had cereal," Ava said dryly, rubbing her scar.

"Oh my, I really am late today. Is everyone up?" Elijah asked.

"Yes, except you and Damon," Indy chirped, putting her small feet in Elijah's slippers. Elijah grimaced, recalling the sharp smacking he had gotten with the right one last night. He shifted and though he felt a warmth and tenderness in his backside. He was relieved that the throbbing and burning was gone. He ought to see to Damon.

"Okay, why don't you three get dressed and I will take you to the lake in a while?" Elijah offered. "I need to get dressed myself."

The kids and dogs ran off and Elijah went to find a suit. He had a lot to do today.

Damon's Room

"You gonna stay in bed all damn day, Brother?" Stefan teased as he wandered into Damon's room. He felt a little bad that he had been bunking with Kol and Enzo, but also relieved. Damon had seemed exhausted and distant when Stefan had checked on him after school yesterday.

"Nothing else to do," Damon moaned, turning on his stomach.

Stefan whacked his covered rump lightly.

"Are you depressed or something?" Stefan asked. "You never stay in bed like this unless you have a massive hangover. Plus, you used to also have two or three chicks in bed with you. What's going on?"

Damon turned again and opened one eye. Stefan was dressed for school in his snug jeans, a white shirt, and a leather jacket. Wasn't that Damon's jacket, Damon wondered, only vaguely caring.

"I'm fine, Stef. Go to school and learn something," Damon mumbled. "I just have no reason to get up."
"I thought you were going to attend Whitmore?" Stefan prompted.

"Dude, it's the middle of the semester," Damon said, finally propping himself up to his side to glare at Stefan.

"Yeah, so? Aaron like owns the school. I'm sure they can get you in," Stefan went on. He fluffed up his hair in the mirror.

"Get out or I'm going to shave your hero hair off. All of it. I'll talk to you later," Damon threatened.

Stefan shook his head. "Never mess with the hair, man. That's like me messing with your car!"

Damon took his pillow and chucked it at Stefan's head, but the younger vampire dodged it. A lamp crashed to the floor loudly.

"Ah, on that note, see ya. Since I still can't drive, we're stuff with the bus or Wes driving us...And I think Wes already left," Stefan announced, walking out of the room into the hallway.

Enzo was puttering with the edge of the new carpet at the end of the hair.

"What are you doing, man?" Stefan asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

"Oh, Stefan...Nothing. I just can still smell that skunk smell. It must have gotten into the floorboards. Damon up?" Enzo asked, changing the subject.

"Nah, not really. Maybe you can get his lazy butt out of bed?" Stefan prompted. "Lucy got zapped by Ava and was well enough to go home. I think he's like...depressed or something?"

"The whole world by the balls and he lounges around in the bed," Enzo scoffed. "Let me see what I can do. Maybe I can get him to do something productive today."

"Like hunt down Augustines and kill them?" Stefan ventured.

"Exactly," Enzo confirmed, amused that Stefan had guess his nefarious attentions. "Elijah does mean to get a hold of their finances. I am sure this house is not cheap to run."

"I wouldn't know," Stefan admitted. "Damon always took care of money stuff at the boarding house. I was more in charge of decorating when he partied too hard and trashed everything."

"Maybe that's what he is missing? Partying? But that won't be easy to replicate here," Enzo ruminated. "Isn't that your bus?"

Enzo peered through the window and pointed.

"Yeah, shit!" Stefan said, vamping downstairs. Enzo heard Rebekah calling Stefan as they ran outside.

Elijah came out, fully dressed in his dark navy blue suit. He was fixing a silk handkerchief in his breast pocket.

"Problem?" Elijah asked, looking at Enzo.

"Ah, no. I was just going to check in on Damon," Enzo said.

"Allow me to do that. You need to go re-do those papers from yesterday. I circled the corrections. Bright red ink, so you don't miss it," Elijah said smoothly. "Now, run along. If you do it quickly, you can join us at the lake."
"You're going to the lake in that?" Enzo asked incredulously. "It's kind of muddy out there."

"Oh, yes, you may have a point. I just don't have many casual clothes," Elijah pointed out.

"I think you should get some," Enzo said bluntly.
Elijah nodded and gave Elijah a pointed look as he looked toward the stairs.

"I'm going," Enzo said after a moment.

"And I'll see to Damon," Elijah replied, mostly to himself.

Ric's Room

Kol arrived for his punishment much later today.

Ric sighed, "Kol, the bell is about to ring. We don't have time now for your paddling. You'll have to come at lunch."

"Can't we just skip it, Ric? I mean, Mr. Saltzman, my butt was sore all morning," Kol whined.

Ric rolled his eyes.

"No, and you are damn lucky to have vampire healing. A few swats with the board used to leave me shifting in my seat all damn day," Ric recalled.

Kol groaned and pulled a vial from his pocket.

"Here. Finn told me to give to you," Kol said grumpily. "It's an anti-healing salve. I'm sure with your vervain coated board, I will be squirming and everyone will know I was thrashed. Happy?" Kol fussed.

Ric took the glass vial.

"How did you come across this?"
"Lucy made it. I'm just jolly glad it wasn't Bonnie, she doesn't need to know I'm getting my arse beat every morning," Kol said, pouting. "Can't we just do this now. I am sick worrying over it. Wes left early and Stefan and I almost missed the bus."

Ric sighed, "Okay, lock the door and drop trou. I guess I can make this quick, but it's gonna sting like hell."

Kol vamped and locked the door and had his pants down before Ric could blink.
"Jeez, you really don't want to wait," Ric surmised.

"I detest waiting for a hiding. That's the bloody worst part. I just want this over with," Kol muttered.

"How about I just give you double now and we'll call it a day. This isn't a picnic for me either," Ric mentioned.

Kol turned back and looked at him in surprise.

"I thought you were enjoying this," Kol scoffed.

"No, I do not want to see your arse, as you put it. I actually have forgiven you. People make mistakes and you seem like you are owning up to this pretty good," Ric said, getting the paddle out of the closet. "Now, grip the other edge of my door. These are gonna be hard ones."

Kol obeyed and felt Ric applying the cool salve to his rear. He shifted his feet as he started to feel a warmth covering the area, then it turned into a burn.
"Vervain," Kol hissed through clenched teeth.

"That will do it," Ric said, lifting the paddle to swing.

Pop!

Pop!

POP!

Kol grunted and remained in place until the fourth swat, right over the first three licks.

Whack!

"Awwwww. Blimey, hells, does that smart!" Kol cursed.

Ric only gave him a few seconds before landing the next swat.

"It's so loud. Are humans deaf?" Kol ground out, shifting his feet again.

Pop!

Pop!

POP!

"OWWWWW!" Kol said, tears running down his cheeks. His bottom was burning and he couldn't take more.

"Three more," Ric informed him.

Crack!

"AHHHHH," Kol said, breaking into tears.

Pop!

POP!

"Done! You can get up," Ric said as the morning bell rang.

Kol reached down and gingerly pulled up his briefs and then jeans. He rubbed his rear and took a tissue from Ric's box on his desk.

"So we're square?" Kol said, kids were trying to open the locked door.

Ric stashed the paddle under his desk and pulled Kol into a hug.

"Yeah, buddy. Just remember that burn when you think about pranking your teachers. Now, go," Ric said, giving Kol a few pats on the back before he let him go.

"Thanks, Mr. Saltzman," Kol said, wiping at his face.

"You can call me Ric when we're alone," Ric said, smiling.

"I'll never say a human isn't strong again, Ric," Kol promised, picking up his bag with one hand and caressing his throbbing rear with the other.

Mikaelson Mansion

Klaus' Study

Klaus sipped blood out of a coffee mug as he flipped through the papers he had taken from Greta's closet. He grimaced at the bitter taste.

"Uh, are you sure we still can't feed from Wes? This tastes awful," Klaus complained.

Finn shrugged, "The doctor needs his strength. He is working at the school now. In light of Rebekah's latest indiscretion, it gives us another pair of eyes on the teens. I think you will have to make do."

"Fine," Klaus said, tapping a page from a sealed manilla envelope. "But I still can't find anything to link Greta to those Travelers. I can't imagine how they got to her. She was happy here...She believed in me. Yet, she gave up her body for them, to destroy us."

Finn put down the housing magazine he had been reading, or trying to.

"I do not know why it matters anymore. She is dead, the Travelers are...oh, Ava. I suppose that does give some cause for alarm, eh?"

Klaus slammed down his mug angrily.

"Yes, they had to have had help. A ragtag band of witches, unable to congregate unless they possessed people? What gave them the courage to make their stand in Mystic Falls? Here, of all places. And this child, Ava, could have been a great boon to them. She can not only absorb magic from others, but she can remove spells. Why would they try to harm her?" Klaus questioned, his voice rising.

"We may never know. But Lucy did say that she would try to locate the mother. You need to have a bit of patience, Niklaus. Try to relax," Finn urged.

"Ah, Sage," Klaus said, getting up.

Sage walked in the opened door and put her arms around Finn's neck, as he leaned back in Klaus' guest chair.

"You must take your own advice, Finn," Sage said wisely. "Sorry to interrupt, but I think the delivery trucks are here."

Klaus smiled, "I ordered some play things to amuse the children. But it is days ahead-."
Sage cut him off, saying, "Oh no, it's the reptile tank, I believe. Shall I call for Elijah?"
Klaus walked to the door. "Nay, I'll fetch him. You two need to decide on things for your house. They will break ground soon and you ought to be prepared."

Sage shrieked as Finn pulled her into his lap and nuzzled her neck. Klaus smiled and went to find his brother.

Damon's Room

Elijah knocked before opening the door. He had Damon's apology letter jammed into his jacket pocket, but thought that the boy would likely ignite it with his handy fire spell.

"Damon, it's me," Elijah said cautiously. "I'd like to speak to you."

Damon rolled over again, moaning, "I'm tired. Go away."
Elijah winced at his acetic tone.

"Nephew, I am here to apologize," Elijah started, dragging a chair over to the bed. He looked down at the broken lamp and picked it up, setting it back on the table. "Look, I didn't know that Julian could compel. I should have known you would never shift like that..."
Damon turned his head and asked, "Why are you talking about?"

Elijah was surprised that no one had mentioned this to him.
"Oh, I assumed you knew. Sage and Enzo observed Julian compel Ava yesterday. She was having a bit of a rough time and...he got her to do his bidding. Quite extraordinary, really. Even us Originals cannot compel a witch. That would have come in handy a time or two the last millennia," Elijah explained.

Damon sat up.

"Wait, the kid compelled me to shift?" Damon barked.

Elijah looked down at his hands and fiddled with his gold watch.

"Ah, apparently so," Elijah said. "I should have tried to listen to you. I am very sorry that I was so hasty-."
"Hasty!" Damon fired back. "You beat my ass black and blue...And now I find out that it wasn't my fault. Get the hell out of here."
"Damon, I said I was-," Elijah attempted, feeling awful.

"Get out!" Damon said, his eyes turning orange in warning, as his face darkened.

"I wrote you a letter," Elijah said, grabbing it out of his pocket. "I'll just leave it here." Elijah set the letter on the bedside table before he quickly walked out.

"Out!" Damon screamed again.

Klaus met Elijah at the door.

"That seemed to go well," Klaus smirked, leaning against the door frame.

"He's not in a mood to hear from me yet," Elijah responded darkly. "I-I will try again later...I promised to take the children to the lake. Excuse me."

Elijah walked off to get the children.
Klaus raised his eyebrows and pushed his way into the room as Damon threw a small pillow hitting Klaus in the face.

"Oaf!" Klaus exclaimed, grabbing the offending pillow. "Son, it's me!"

"Oh," Damon said softly. "I thought it was your brother. The one with the stick up his ass."

Klaus tossed the pillow back on Damon's grand bed.

"Ah, that is your uncle and he was trying to make amends with you. He feels awful," Klaus defended.

"Yeah, well, he's lucky I did't scotch that stupid suit off him and turn him into a torch!" Damon retorted. "Who wears a suit around the house like that?"

Klaus pursed his lips. "Ah, I think it's in witch code that you do no harm to family, is it not?"
"What do I know about witches?" Damon said, reclining again. "I just want to sleep some more."

Klaus moved closer to the bed.

"You aren't sick again, are you?" Klaus said, feeling Damon's forehead lightly.

Damon brushed away his hand.

"I'm fine," Damon grunted. "I just...I don't know. I keep hearing the sound of that belt snapping down...over and over. I didn't think he was ever going to stop."

Klaus set in the vacated chair that Elijah had left.

"You said you were reminded of Giuseppe Salvatore?" Klaus asked, feeling anger in his very bones. Not at Elijah now, but at this man, who had been dead for so long.

"Yes. Seeing him in the grave...I thought it would help, but it didn't. He was just a scared human coward. He treated my mother like his property. I didn't realize it at the time, but she was afraid of him, too. Everyone was except the Founders. They thought he was a stand up guy. They were so impressed with his money and businesses. Yet all he could do is get drunk and rant about demons," Damon drifted off.

"I wish I had some words to make it better for you," Klaus breathed. "My own father, Mikael, had the same effect on me. When I killed him, I thought it would heal some of the wounds. Yet, it did not. He didn't even know I was not his true son until I turned into a wolf. But he hated me all the same. 'Boy, you are weak,' he would sneer anytime I tried to hunt or please him. Why I even tried, I will never know. That shames me to this day."
Damon looked at Klaus and saw the faraway expression on his face.

"You don't need to talk about it. That's never helps anyway," Damon mused.

"Well, not talking about it doesn't help either, does it?" Klaus smiled.

Damon agreed, "No, I guess not. Can you just sit here with me?"

"You ought to eat something," Klaus said. "Come on, let's go downstairs."
"In a little while. The truth is that I've been waking up from nightmares. I barely slept last night. I guess I'm afraid to because I know what is coming," Damon said. "I think I want to hear about your life before. Like, how did it all start? You know, your mother turning all of you. The very first bloodsuckers in history..."

Klaus smiled and nodded.

"Oh, that is a very sordid tale. You see, I suppose it first started in Europe...Maybe earlier, the story was that our sister Freya died of plague. Mother's best friend, the witch Ayana, told them of a land where people were strong and free from disease," Klaus begun, settling back to tell everything he knew. Damon listened intently until he felt like he was apart of the story.

When Klaus got to the part where the Originals left for Europe, Damon grew sleepy.

"And that's where we met Lucian Castle, a real brat, if I ever met one. I never should have turned him, but live and learn," Klaus blathered.

"I'm kinda tired," Damon yawned.

Klaus moved to the bed and stoked his hair.

"I'll tell you the rest of the story later," Klaus said, leaning over to kiss Damon's head.

"Thanks, Daddy," Damon replied, before drifting off. Klaus smiled and tucked his son in the bed. He would let his boy sleep now and he wouldn't leave him so easily.

Mystic Falls High School

Third Hour

Second Floor

Aaron picked up Nessie's books as she struggled to open her locker.

"This goddamn thing sticks," Nessie grumbled, as Aaron pulled it open for her.

"Yeah, mine does too," Aaron said. "They must be a hundred years old. So, yesterday was pretty cool. You up for more peanut butter blasts today after school?"
Nessie turned her unusual eyes on him. Aaron didn't know which one he liked best, the green or the blue...This girl was really different.

"Um," Nessie stalled, biting her lip. "I don't think I can go today. My dad said he wants to talk to me and I have to come right home."

Aaron scoffed, "That sucks. Can't you just say you forgot? I had a really good time. I was even thinking we should go to the dance together next week?"

"The decade dance?" Nessie asked. "Oh, wow, it's like a big thing here. Are you sure?"

"Yeah, freshman can go," Aaron said. "Blow off your dad and come with me."

"I don't know. The last time I pulled that I got in a lot of trouble," Nessie admitted.

Aaron laughed, "Big deal! I'm not worth getting grounded for?"

Nessie touched his forearm and looked around. He was handsome, but not her usual type. She preferred Goth boys like herself. This kid was rich and preppy looking, but he had an aura of confidence about him that she was drawn to.

"No, Aaron. I'll get my butt beat. For real," Nessie finally blurted out, looking to make sure no other students overheard. She was embarrassed enough.

"Oh," Aaron said, reeling with surprise. "Well, that really sucks. I guess you can't call the cops on him, huh?"
Nessie felt defensive, "No, I'm not abused. It's just it's really hard on my dad, being single. Look, don't tell anyone, okay?"

"No, I wouldn't," Aaron promised. "But I guess I'm not worth a little spanking..."
Nessie swatted him on the arm lightly.

"Last time, I got it with a bath brush," Nessie confessed. "And I had to take down my pants! My dad saw this black thong that I stole with my old friends. I thought he was going to have a fucking heart attack. It was so bad...I had to sleep on my stomach that night."
"Thong?" Aaron gulped. "Tell me more."

"Oh, are you getting off on this?" Nessie laughed. "You perv!"

Aaron swallowed and got a hold of himself.

"No, honestly, you are lucky to have a real dad," Aaron shared. "My parents died and Wes, well, you know him. He has no clue what to do with me. Sometimes I'm a real dick to him and he just takes it. I kind of wonder what my real parents would have done, you know?"
"Yeah, well, you should be nicer to Dr. M., he's like a genius. Hey, we're going to be late for class," Nessie chided, realizing the hallway was deserted. She reached up on her tippy toes and kissed Aaron on the lips as she snatched back her books. "I still have to get my stuff. You better go!"

Aaron was dazed and wanted more, but the late bell rang and snapped him back to reality.

As he danced away, Nessie called out, "And remember, mouth shut about what I told you..."

"I don't remember anything about a thong...," Aaron laughed.

Nessie just giggled and finally went to retrieve the proper books for her next class. She really was going to be late, but it was worth it. Aaron was a real catch.
