Chapter 10
Giving their goodbyes to Yellow with Vali leading the way back onto the proper paths through Viridian Forest, they were once more being hammered by bug catchers and various wild pokemon. But the time within Yellow's abode had helped Ash and Gary's partners regain their lost strength while also honing their moves to the point that they started having a much easier time. Despite this fact, the young pokemon still collapsed into a pile at the days end once training was over.
Seeing sunlight pouring down ahead unhindered by any trees sent a bolt of hope through Ash, he glanced back at Vali alongside Gary, "Is that really...?"
Smiling at him, Vali dipped her head as she waved a hand towards the upcoming gap in the trees, "Yup. You two have officially made it through Viridian Forest."
With a cheer, Ash darted forward with Gary following after unable to actually stop themselves as they both wanted to feel the sunlight on their skin. As he raced out into the sunlight, he was blinded for a few seconds and slid to a stop. Blinking a bit, he took in the plains around them with rolling grasslands that seemed to stretch onward for miles. In the distance, he could see Mount Moon standing like a blue-grey sentinel over the world. As a hand touched his shoulder, he tore his eyes off the mountain and glanced back to see Vali smiling at him.
"Mount Moon's huge," Gary murmured with awe in his voice.
"It is," Vali confirmed with a soft laugh, "We'll be spending a bit of time in there, but not too much since we've got to stick to our time table," She squeezed his shoulder before glancing backward, "Hey, Gar?"
"Yeah?" Gary looked towards her.
"I think-" Vali started to speak just as a loud challenging squawk echoed through the air.
They all spun around to see a Spearow charging towards them. It flared its wings out just a few feet from them and landed on a large boulder that was set up near one of the ancient trees that bordered the Viridian forest. Gary moved forward with a look of recognition on his face, "Spearow, you want to challenge me? To see if I worthy of being your trainer, right?"
Spearow nodded while puffing up its chest as Vali let out a soft laugh. She held out a hand, "Spearow," The bird looked at her with narrowed eyes, "It's a pleasure to finally meet my little brother's watcher. I'm going to warn you that my Raichu is going to set up a barrier to ensure no attacks harm us humans, but otherwise the match will be between you two."
Spearow nodded its head firmly and let out a challenging cry as it turned back to Gary. Vali grabbed Ash's shoulder and tugged him away from Gary earning a surprised look. He spoke as Gary released Weepinbell, "Vali, you aren't going to say anything?"
"Nope," Vali shook her head while plopping down on the ground with Elrond floating beside her shoulder and Thorin flopping onto the ground with a huff, "After all, a battle between prospective partners is sacred. To interfere is almost sinful, Ash."
"Right," Ash slowly sat down beside her as Aragorn dropped his head into Vali's lap.
Spearow dodged Weepinbell's initial razor leaf and shot up into the air with a fierce scream that rang out. To Ash's shock, the bird's wings were engulfed in bluish white energy as it swung them backward and with a sharp cry, a practical tunnel of wind was released by the Spearow. Vali spoke with an impressed tone, "Utilizing Razor Wind in such a way, the little shit actually managed to mimic Gust effectively."
"Really, but I thought that the Spearow-line couldn-" Ash started as a cry of pain sounded from the impromptu battlefield.
Weepinbell had been caught up in the apparent Razor Wind, but thanks to his training with Pidgeotto, the grass-type had managed to work through the wind long enough to grasp Spearow in his vines. With a gurgle, he managed to fling the bird into a nearby boulder and sent a couple Razor Leaves to back up his attack. Due to the wind, the slam hadn't been that effective, but Spearow hadn't quite managed to dodge the razor sharp leaves. Pushing itself into the air once again, Spearow panted steadily and peered down at Weepinbell clearly attempting to think of someway to win.
"Like all Flying-types, it is burrowed deeply in their very DNA to learn any flying-type move, Ash," Vali replied in a steady tone as her gaze lingered on Spearow who raced down towards Weepinbell clearly having made a decision, "It's not about can't. It's all about a willingness to learn and taking time to actually bring out a pokemon's true potential. From a Charizard to even the smallest Caterpie, no pokemon cannot simply do nothing just because one believes it's impossible. After all, a Clefairy shouldn't be able to use Shadow Ball or Fling yet they do. If a trainer is willing to take time and actually help them learn it, they can learn anything,"
As Vali's words sank in, Ash watched Spearow's beak take on a bluish-white glow as the bird rushed towards Weepinbell. Just before it could hit the grass-type, Weepinbell grabbed the bird with his vines and threw it away once more. Following this up with more Razor Leave, Weepinbell let out a gurgling cry as Spearow cried out in pain. Spearow struggled to it's feet unsteadily and attempted to take flight only to fall back down moments into the air. Weepinbell let out another gurgling cry that made Spearow still and Gary slowly moved forward. With a jolt, Ash realized that Gary hadn't said a single word this entire battle.
"Just realized that Gary let Weepinbell take charge, huh?" Vali asked with a low laugh, "Guess he figured that Weepinbell would be the best pokemon to fight Spearow,"
"Huh?" Ash looked at her in confusion.
"Weepinbell is to Gary what Balto is to me," Vali looked at him, "Think about it carefully, Ash. You have a partner pokemon, yes, but is Pikachu the pokemon that'll keep things straight? The one who will keep all your other pokemon in line? Or will it be Pidgeotto?"
"I..." Ash didn't know and honestly hadn't truly thought about it.
"Discuss it with Pikachu and Pidgeotto, they'll have likely already made that decision without needing any input from you," Vali replied while tapping her pokemon on their noses, "Let's get up and see how those three are doing,"
Gary was on one knee before Spearow holding out a pokeball with a determined smile on his face as Ash looked back at his best friend. He spoke as Spearow stared up at him, "You've felt our hearts while battling, Spearow. I'll admit that I've got a million reasons to actually be traveling. The biggest one is to show this world that I'm not just another Oak working beneath my Gramps' shadow. I want to show them that I'm worth more than this name I've got," He stared right into Spearow's eyes, "Every partner that I've got is special in that they're working towards the same goal as me. So whatcha say, Spearow? Want to make a name for yourself in this world and show them that you're better than any other member of the Spearow-line?"
Spearow held his gaze for another minute before letting out a fierce cry and practically slamming its' beak into the release button on the pokeball. With a loud click, Spearow disappeared into the pokeball and it shook for a good couple seconds before chiming. With a smirk, Gary stood as he held the pokeball up in a clenched fist. He turned to them with a grin as Ash murmured, "Gary, you caught it."
"I've got a brand new partner," Gary pumped his fist, "Welcome to the team, Spearow!"
Weepinbell let out a gurgle and tugged his trainer into a hug earning a loud laugh. Ash quickly joined in to help congratulate Gary as Vali laughed at them though she soon joined them. Part of Ash wondered who his next pokemon would be, it would be nice to have another partner soon.
Inwardly cursing Sydney and the man's forces even if they were far too skilled to get rid of, Steven finally finished decoding the last document and saved the information into an encoded file with a low groan. Head dropping against the back of his chair, he didn't automatically reach for his pokenav when it went off. It was only after the second ring that he reached for it with a low sigh. Answering the call without looking to see who it was, he asked, "Hello?"
"Steven, you okay? You sound tired," Vali's voice filled with concern banished some of the mental exhaustion he felt.
Pulling his head up, Steven flicked on the setting that would allow them to see each other's face and smiled at her. She was frowning at him as Elrond peered over her shoulder. He nodded his head with a low sigh, "A bit. Sydney's been an ass, but nothing I can't quite deal with. I take it you've made it through Viridian forest if you're calling."
Smile brightening her face, Vali nodded sending the small strands that had escaped the ponytail she'd wrangled her hair into dancing about her face. Based on the towel around her neck and the slight sheen to her hair, she'd just finished taking a shower which wasn't too surprising given how long she'd been in that forest. She told him, "We got into Pewter an hour ago. Did you get the picture that I sent you?"
"I haven't checked my pokenav, but probably..." Steven quickly scrolled through his pokenav to Vali's contact and went to her recent messages, "What caused that little hug?"
"Gary caught his first pokemon," Vali explained earning a raised eyebrow, "A rather clever little Spearow with Razor Wind for an Egg move. Little shit managed to make a mock up of Gust on her own,"
Eyes widening at that, Steven let out a low chuckle, "In the hands of Gary, she'll be able to do so much more especially if Celina takes the time to actually teach her. Have they been introduced yet?"
"No as Gary wanted to keep the little thing in her pokeball until after she got seen by Nurse Joy," Vali shook her head in amusement, "I can already guess what plans are going through his head when it comes to that little thing,"
Letting out a laugh, Steven shook his head, "I honestly pictured Ash would catch something first given how he is. Has he had his eye on anything?"
"No though with Gary catching Spearow, it probably won't be long," Vali grinned slightly before tilting her head, "How has it been over there? I know that you guys were dealing with a couple problems, but..."
Letting out a sigh as he halfway didn't want to bother her with his Regions problems, Steven admitted, "It's all currently small, but with the surge that Kanto has experienced due to the Rockets, it has caused us to be more wary. All things considered, a lot of people just want to put it off as a bunch of small things simply occurring randomly."
"But someone is noticing a pattern no matter how small," Vali's eyes narrowed at him, "Is it just starting or..."
"For now, it's just starting making it the lowest priority," Steven ran a hand through his hair, "I have Sydney using some of his men to track it, but I doubt they're taking things seriously. Not at this point,"
"People never do until it's far too late," Vali shook her head while giving him a sad look, "Steven, I won't push, but do you think it might be a resurgence of-"
"Vali," Steven cut her off not wanting to hear it until he had to, "I...Not until we've confirmed it,"
Nodding her head, Vali spoke softly, "I'll be here for you whether it turns out to be them or not. I'll even call in some favors to ensure that I can be on the first boat to Hoenn," She gave him a serious look filled with promise, "You will not be alone, Steven. I promise."
Heart hurting yet feeling lighter, Steven found himself smiling at her, "I know, Vali. I...I know."
Running a hand through her hair, Vali walked downstairs feeling actually clean for the first time in weeks. She frowned at hearing a shout of, "It's not my fault you two are such incompetent kids that-"
"We're not kids!" Gary shouted back sounding pissed off.
Eyes narrowing as she hadn't heard him sound that way since one of the last traveling trainers to visit Pallet Town had tried to say Gary shouldn't be raising Bell, Vali headed to where she could hear the argument going on and found her eyes widening in slight disbelief. What the fuck was Misty Waterflower doing in Pewter City of all places? Especially arguing with Gary and Ash, it didn't make sense since the ginger haired girl was supposed to be in Cerulean working hard to gain Gym Leader Status just like her elder sisters. Clearing her throat, she inwardly snorted as the three spun around to face her with Ash shouting, "Vali!"
"What's going on down here?" Vali asked as she crossed her arms with her pokemon taking up their usual places, "We're in a place of healing and rest. If you're really needing to solve an issue, you should do so outside,"
"Elite Four Potter-Black," Misty gasped out with wide green eyes, "I-you-what are you doing here?"
Eyebrow raising at the girl as Gary and Ash sniggered, Vali replied, "Seeing as I'm on vacation to ensure my brothers have a somewhat smooth journey, I am here for them," She tilted her head as the girl blanched a bit, "What are you doing here, Miss Waterflower? As far as I or your parents are aware, you were supposed to be in Cerulean working to gain Gym Leader Status alongside your elder sisters. So unless I've missed something, you've been lying to your parents,"
"N-no!" Misty shook her head rapidly, "I-"
"She's the one we told you about!" Ash burst out earning a glance from her, "The one that caused the Gyarados to attack us!"
"No, I didn-" Misty started to protest with a red face.
"I see," Vali frowned deeply as Misty's jaw clamped shut, "It was very lucky that Eowyn was there to protect you three and keep that Gyarados back long enough for me to arrive. Despite it being so long ago, I have every right to revoke your license, Miss Waterflower,"
"W-what?!" Misty shrieked looking at her in alarm, "But I di-"
"You are well are of what a Gyarados can do, yet set a wild one off while running away which endangered those left behind," Vali gave the girl a stern look as she fell silent with a pale face, "That stunt would have likely ended up in their deaths had my own pokemon not been there to protect them. To be quite honest, I am very tempted to revoke your license right now as would be my right, but..."
"But?" Ash and Gary murmured.
"You are an admittedly promising young trainer who has prospects to reach Mastery level which would mean revoking you license now would be a shame," Vali pinched the bridge of her nose as she tried to figure out what to do, "I am not happy with happened at all. You were callous and have treated my brothers poorly. To make a decision myself would however, it would likely taint the results especially as I've been friends with your parents since my own journey," She took out her pokenav as a decision came to her, "So I will allow another to make the decision,"
"W-wait!" Misty shouted looking at Vali in alarm, "C-can't we talk about this?"
"When a decision has been made, you may attempt to argue further, Miss Waterflower," Vali replied while dialing the number.
"Hello, Doggy," Karen peered at her with a raised eyebrow, "This is a surprise, I wasn't expecting a call from you for another week,"
Blinking a bit at that, Vali tried to remember why before mentally slapping herself. They were supposed to be meeting up before she entered Mount Moon to catch up on what was going on within the League while she's been away not to mention Karen was supposed to tell her if Lance had lost his current secretary just yet. Shaking her head, she told Karen, "It's not about that, Ren. A certain baby gym leader in training has apparently been misbehaving quite severely and I need you to pass judgement. I don't want to be accused of making a bad call later on."
Karen's silver-blue eyes blinked at her as the Dark-type master asked, "You being accused on not being neutral? The only time I've ever see you do that is when your broth-It involves your brothers, doesn't it, Doggy?"
"Yup," Vali admitted without an ounce of shame, "So can you get to Pewter anytime soon?"
"I've got a couple hours to kill. You in the Center?" Karen asked earning a nod, "Be there in five, I want the details of what's going on in the meantime,"
Smiling a bit, Vali replied, "Already sending them to you, I'll see ya soon."
With that, the call was ended and Vali put her pokenav away after sending all the information she could think of to Karen. Ash spoke as she looked at them, "Vali, you seriously just did that?"
"Yup," Vali shrugged her shoulders, "Now," She looked at Misty who's face was the shade of Miltank milk, "I highly suggest that you really think of a good reason for doing any of what you've done recently, Miss Waterflower. While a revoked license can be restored with certain caveats later, it's highly likely you will not be allowed to attain Gym Leader Status for a very long time. So do think carefully,"
The girl trembled heavily and looked ready to burst into tears. Rather than comfort her, Vali turned to Ash and Gary with a look. Gary spoke for them," Vali, I-"
"You two will speak with Karen and tell her your own versions of the events. Speak clearly and truthfully, I will be highly disappointed if a single lie leaves either of you," She eyed them for a long moment before continuing, "After this is done, we will head to the gym and get you two set up for your gym battles,"
"Right," Ash and Gary murmured softly looking a little shocked.
Vali walked over to them and set her hands on their shoulders. She squeezed them lightly, "Think of this as a mock up for if the Jenny's need you to do any interviews."
There was an excited bark from behind her and Vali turned around in just enough time to have Karen's Houndoom, Merce, slam into her much to Thorin's displeasure, she let out a laugh and wrapped her arms around the hellish hound. She hugged him lightly as he lapped at her cheek. Karen let out a laugh as her Umbreon, Moon, darted over to greet Thorin and Aragorn, "Damn, I knew he missed you, but not that much."
"How's it been, Ren?" Vali managed to push Merce off her and he quickly went to greet Aragorn.
"Eh, the same it usually is when you're not around, but worse cause of the Beedrill stuck up Dragon-boy's caped ass," Karen shook her head as the three pre-teens gapped at them, "This the one?"
"Misty Waterflower," Vali confirmed not all surprised that Karen wanted to get straight down to business which was why she'd called the woman.
Karen eyed Misty's pale features and smirked darkly, "Right. You mind me using your room for this, Doggy? I'd rather not have to bug the local Nurse into letting me get a private room that we won't need for too long."
Shrugging lightly, Vali tossed her the key, "Just don't go rooting through my shit."
"I'm not Willy or Dragon-boy, Doggy," Karen stuck her tongue out at Vali as she caught the key, "Now c'mon, Brat. I'd rather get this over with. You two," Karen gave Ash and Gary a look, "Be ready for when I call ya, got it?"
The two nodded earning a pleased look from Karen as the woman turned and began leading Misty away.
Within two hours of Vali calling on her and going through everything, Karen was able to make a decision. Rather than completely revoke Misty Waterflower's license, the girl was put on probation for two years and sent via League Alakazam back to Cerulean where she'd be undergoing a retraining program alongside her pokemon. Once a decision had been made, Misty's parents were informed of everything that had happened and the two promptly began to make plans to return to Cerulean City after apologizing for what their daughter had done. All in all, it was a rather clear cut decision that made Vali very glad that she'd chosen to have someone else make it.
After getting Ash and Gary's gym battle's schedules with the two needing to face a single gym trainer each before actually battling the Gym Leader, Vali went out to eat with Karen. They chose one of the smaller restaurants in town with a view of the museum. Karen spoke as they got their food and the server walked off, "Talk, Doggy. What happened to make Lance go up in arms? You and I both know it wouldn't be a simple pokemon center robbery as bad as that sounds."
Tugging at her hair, Vali glanced at Karen and mentally sighed. Unlike with most of the League right now, she knew that Karen could be trusted since Balin and the rest of her pokemon back at Indigo had already done their research on her. It helped that Karen had been one of the first people to reach out when she'd first become an Elite and offered up more than a few personal details. Dropping her hand, she muttered, "Shit happened, Karen. We can confirm that at least one Gym Leader is dirty."
Fork dropping against her plate, Karen stared at her with wide eyes, "The fuck? How the-But that wou-Shit."
Picking up her glass of Pinap juice, Vali took a sip before telling Karen, "I won't mention names, Ren. But this vacation I'm on, isn't one anymore. I'm still working to help my brothers, but I..."
"He's having you root out who's dirty," Karen breathed out, "That's fucked up,"
"It is," Vali swallowed harshly, "But who else can do it? Surge? Blaine? Koga? Ren, I'm the only one in Kanto or Johto with a large enough network to cover all the gym leaders,"
"And the Elite?" Karen paused before letting out a curse, "Your-"
"Yeah," Vali ran a hand through her hair, "So far, everyone has come back clean up in the Plateau which makes things easier on me," She gave Karen an apologetic look, "I know that it might hur-"
"Look, I'm not angry at you," Karen waved her off with a snort, "If anything, I'm more pissed at Dragon-boy for putting so much on your shoulders especially on a fucking vacation. Anything I can do to help?"
"Just tell me if anyone starts to act suspiciously," Vali told her with a tired sigh, "Even among the regular workers, we can risk having security breeches right now,"
"I'll warn ya," Karen grabbed her own glass though it was filled with some type of wine that Vali wasn't even going to attempt to name, "This is fucked, Puppy,"
"Don't I know it, Ren," Vali set down her glass.
"Vali actually admitted that when it comes to us, she's not neutral..." Ash was a bit blown away by that.
When it came to his older sister, Vali had always been fair to an almost ridiculous degree. It honestly made the fact that she was a Hisuian Arcanine make more sense because of how fair she could be. But to hear that she couldn't be neutral when it came to Gary and him, it honestly broke his brain a little bit. He knew that she wouldn't let them do anything that could cause harm or outright be utterly ridiculous. But not that it'd been said, he was starting to connect a few mental dots especially when it came to him having Pidgeotto come on his Journey.
"Shit," Gary muttered softly, "If she wasn't like this, we wouldn't get to have Bell or Pidgeotto with us, would we?"
"Probably not," Ash touched Pidgeotto's pokeball which had just been returned to him, "For that, I'm thankful,"
"Yeah," Gary shook his head before glancing towards the Center's doors, "Any idea where they went?"
Scrunching up his nose, Ash shrugged slightly, "No idea. I'm getting hungry though, so want to grab a bite to eat?"
"Might as well, I should get Spearow fed," Gary grinned a bit as he ran a finger across the new ball hooked to his belt, "Still can't believe she's mine,"
"Well believe it," Ash knocked a fist against his shoulder as they headed towards the cafeteria, "She's pretty strong too,"
"Yeah, I'm so damn proud of her," Gary's grin widened.
Hearing a knock on his door, Lance looked up from the paperwork he was looking at glad for the interruption, "Come in-"
"Dragon-boy," Karen stomped in with a glare on her face and a rather pissed off Moon beside her, "Give me one reason not to stab you in the balls with Vali's most recent birthday gift,"
Considering the fact he definitely recalled Vali giving Karen a set of wicked looking daggers that she'd gotten from who knows where, Lance definitely didn't need those anywhere near his manhood. Frowning while wondering what the fuck had set of his Dark-type master, Lance told her, "I have no idea what the problem is, but you really don't ne-"
"Making Doggy work on her fucking vacation!" Karen slammed her hand onto his desk with a hiss as Moon jumped up to glare at him beside his master, "Seriously, Dragon-boy? You can't give her a single fucking break-"
Realizing that somehow Karen had learned about what was actually going on, Lance ran a hand across his face, "Karen, I wouldn't have done it if Vali wasn't my only option."
"Bullshit! You have an army of psychics that could easily take her bur-" Karen started to protest.
"An army that might be fucking compromised!" Lance roared at her making Karen jolt back with a started look on her face and Moon hissed at him in alarm, "Do you really think I'd rather have Vali putting herself through more bullshit? Especially after she almost died on her last undercover mission? Do you really think that I want this, Karen? Mew damn it, I would rather put myself through that than have Vali deal with more fucking shit. She deserves a vacation more than anyone, but I can't,"
"Lance..." Karen stared at him with a frown.
Running a hand through his hair, Lance muttered, "Of all the people we have available, Vali is the only one with the skills and ability to get the information we need, Karen. She is the only one we know of that isn't compromised," He sank into his chair a bit further, "If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have even suspected anything was going on."
"Shit," Karen pressed a hand over her mouth, "Who-"
"Giovanni is the only one we know of so far," Lance revealed earning a wide eyed look and Karen slowly moved to sit down across from him with a dawning look of horror on her face, "And given the fact that he tried to blackmail Vali while attempting to use a veritable army of Porygon to assist, we can only assume that he may have others working with him,"
"Fucking hell," Karen dropped her hands onto Moon's back as the Umbreon perched himself beside his master, "Arcues' fine ass, how the fuck does Doggy keep getting involved in this shit? First, she nearly dies during the undercover op because some newbie ACE busts in too early and his Nidoking get's too twitchy. Now this..."
"Her luck is fucked six ways to Sunday," Lance shook his head, "I assume Vali asked you for help?"
"Some though I wish she'd asked for more," Karen grumbled softly, "I'll make sure to stick to what she's asked me though. I know better than to overstep,"
"Good," Lance sighed deeply, "Karen-"
"Dragon-Boy," Karen gave him a serious look, "Tell her your feelings soon, I don't care if Stone and you have an arrangement. With how things are going, she's running herself into the ground and shits going to spiral. If she doesn't end up getting hurt to the point we lose her one way, she might end up having to retire and you damn well know she'll end up in another region,"
Wincing at that, Lance bit his bottom lip. Despite the denials that wanted to slip past his lips, Karen wasn't saying anything that he didn't already know. If things turned out how he really didn't want and they ended up going into a miniature civil war because of Giovanni, Vali might end up getting hurt far worse than she's ever been before just because of her fucked up luck. And if he didn't say anything soon, he'd likely lose out on any chance. But still he felt himself hesitate at the thought of telling Vali, the thought of her rejecting him hurt like a fucking Scyther was using it's blade to carve out something from his chest.
Taking a deep breath as he willed those thoughts away, Lance told her, "I...I know, Karen. Trust me, I'm very aware."
Snorting at him, Karen stood up, "Who knows, you might have to worry about another champion coming after her or some shit like that. With how far she's traveled and the friends she has all over, you never know if one of them will end up with her."
Wincing at that, Lance frowned as Karen left without waiting for him to dismiss her. Sinking back into his chair, he turned his head as a low croon sounded from behind him. Seeing the worried look on Diaval's face, he reached out to stroke his partner's nose while murmuring, "I...Could Vali really end up with someone other than Steven or I, Dia? I mean...Yeah, I know that she's traveled a lot, but..."
The thought of Vali ending up with anyone other than Steven or himself hurt Lance in ways that made him cringe. While seeing her happy would likely easy any kind of sting enough to make things bearable, he just...he didn't want to see it happen. He wanted to have his Fire Empress standing beside him or sitting with Steven. It didn't matter to him which she ended up choosing in the end, but his heart ached at the thought of her loving anyone other than them. But the question remained, what was he going to do? How was he even going to bring this up to her?
