Chapter 3: Infiltration

The days melded seamlessly into weeks, which in turn transformed into arduous months as they ventured further into the labyrinth of the Swans' world.

Their unwavering determination to bring down this empire, especially Charlie Swan kept them motivated. They have been assuming the identity of Will and Masen to infiltrate, accompanied with a strong back story to match it, simple and short, with all their government documents to back it up so when they dig, which they will do, they find nothing. They were given an apartment nothing big, but enough for both.

Everything has been going fine; it started by following two idiots they knew were on a job and ended up saving their ass on a fight. And, having these idiots trust them by providing simple support, insights on some of the work, … and next thing you know, they started talking to Simon which picked his interest. Gaining his trust proved to be a difficult task, he is a tight-lipped figure. It is true what they said, these people are notorious for their strict code of loyalty and secrecy.

Under the watchful eye of Simon, they embarked on a series of assignments, meticulously executing each one to prove their worth. The FBI team has been secretly helping when they needed. Edward knew they were involved in heavy machinery and all type of drugs, but it is something else to see thousands of kilograms of heroin, cocaine… right in front of you. It goes against all of what he believes: selling to people, doing drop off, ... when usually they would have been confiscated.

But their unwavering dedication gradually chipped away at Simon's skepticism, as he begrudgingly acknowledged their skills and potential. Slowly he started to trust them a little bit more, they began to ascend the ranks of the crew, earning the privilege of meeting other key players.

However, as time wore on, the weight of personal sacrifices bore down heavily, especially on Emmett. Which is a first for him since now compared to other missions, there is a baby in the equation. It was a bitter pill to swallow, knowing that he had chosen to miss his first baby milestones in exchange to bring a little bit of peace in a terrified city. Everyone knows that the Italians were involved, but there has never been enough proof for an arrest.

One evening, as Edward and Emmett gathered with a group of associates in a dimly lit familiar warehouse, the atmosphere was tinged with a mixture of admiration and envy. The associates had taken notice of them, and whispers of their names filled the room. Victoria, known for her sharp tongue and ambitious nature, couldn't hide her jealousy. She glared at Edward and Emmett, a mix of admiration and envy burning in her eyes.

"So, Will and Masen, huh? Seems like you two have been making quite a name for yourselves." Victoria remarked with a slight sneer. She smelled like cigarette. Edward and Emmett exchanged a knowing glance but remained composed. They were aware of the dynamics at play within the organization, where success could breed both respect and envy.

"We're just doing our part, Victoria," Edward responded calmly, his voice carrying a hint of modesty. "We focus on results, and it seems that our results speak for themselves."

A hushed murmur filled the room as other associates chimed in, expressing their admiration for Edward and Emmett's accomplishments. James, a seasoned associate known for his strategic mind, acknowledged their contributions.

"I've heard you two have been instrumental in the Waters mission," James said. "Impressive work, gentlemen. We need more men like you."

Edward and Emmett accepted the praise with humility, acknowledging the recognition from their peers. It was a delicate balance, as their rising prominence could also attract unwanted attention and suspicion.

However, as the conversation continued, the envy in Victoria's eyes became more evident. She could no longer hide her frustration at Edward and Emmett's growing reputation.

"I don't understand what all the fuss is about," Victoria spat, her voice dripping with resentment. "There are others who have been here longer and have accomplished just as much, if not more."

Emmett raised an eyebrow, his tone tinged with amusement. "Everyone has their strengths, Victoria. It's not a competition. We're here to work together."

Victoria's face flushed with anger, her competitiveness refusing to be appeased. She shot a pointed look at Edward and Emmett before storming out of the room, the echoes of her frustration trailing behind her. As the room settled into an uncomfortable silence, Edward leaned closer to Emmett and spoke in a low voice.

"Jealousy can be a dangerous motivator, Emmett. We must tread carefully with her," Edward cautioned. Emmett nodded, his gaze focused and determined.

Another associate, Dominic, approached Edward with a surprising look in his eyes. He leaned in, his voice a low whisper. "But I'm curious, though. Why is Marcus here?"

Edward and Emmett turned to see him. The Marcus Swan, he is Charlie's youngest brother and his consigliere. He was striding confidently into the warehouse, with two guards behind him, his presence commanded attention, and a hush fell over the warehouse.

Edward acted surprised like everyone else, he has read enough about them to know who he is but seeing him in person is a different ball game.

He stands at an average height, with a strong and sturdy build, his salt-and-pepper hair adds a touch of distinction to his appearance, while his hazel piercing eyes, concealed behind a pair of sleek glasses. Just by looking at him you know already that he possesses a refined and polished appearance; all the pictures we have seen has him always dressed impeccably in tailored suits, it is still the case. Maybe it is the dress code amongst them but combined with their composed demeanor, it commands respect, fear and admiration from those around all of them.

Edward knows that, as the consigliere, Marcus is the trusted advisor to the Swan family, offering counsel on matters of strategy, negotiations, and decision-making. Nothing gets executed without him knowing.

It is known that his expertise is highly valued by his brothers, his presence brings a sense of stability and guidance for them. He is the more calm-headed out of them three.

Marcus' sharp eyes scanned the room, his gaze lingering on Edward and Emmett for a brief moment before addressing the group.

"I've heard great things about the progress being made by some of our newer recruits," Marcus declared, his voice carrying a mixture of authority. "We have something coming up and I want you all to stay alert." Everyone nodded as signs of respect.

Edward and Emmett exchanged glances once again, their minds racing with questions. Marcus' unexpected visit raised the stakes even higher, and they knew they had to be cautious. But there was no time to dwell on it. Every step forward brought them closer to their goal.

Later that night, as Edward lay in his bed, he received a message from their contact, Jacob, hinting at a breakthrough in their investigation. Edward's heart raced with anticipation. This was it. Sooner they can get this done, sooner they can close this case and go home.

As he read the message, Edward's thoughts turned to the stolen picture of Isabella that he has in his drawer but got replace quickly to Emmett, to the longing he knew his brother felt for his wife and daughter. He can't lose focus, he at least owes it to Emmett, so his time away from his family is not for nothing.

With renewed determination, Edward closed his eyes. Sleep came slowly, but when it did, it was filled with visions of Isabella Swan.
