Chapter 4: Closer to the Edge

The room buzzed with anticipation as Edward and Emmett gathered with the team in charge of the covert operation. It had been months since they last saw their colleagues in person, as communication was deliberately kept at a minimum for operational security. Edward secretly missed their banter around the office, but he will never admit it, knowing they would never let him forget it. Especially Jake.

In this call, all the key players were present except for Aro, the FBI director. Special Agent Emily Young, known for her analytical skills, sat posed and focused. Special Agent Eric Yorkie, an expert in surveillance and intelligence analysis, exuded an air of confidence. Special Agent Mike Newton, a former NSA officer and infiltration specialist, as always had an aura of competence. Agent Neil Waters, a skilled negotiator and profiler, provided invaluable insights through his intelligence analysis. And Jacob Black, the Executive Assistant Director, the point of contact for this case; even though he is a goofy figure, he always commanded respect and trust.

This group of people had become Edward and Emmett's "work" family over the years. They had learned to rely on and trust each other, which is crucial, especially in their line of work. You need people on your side.

As Jacob's face materialized on the screen, his black eyes brimmed with the gravity of their shared endeavour. "Hey guys, we've got some updates for you," he greeted them, his voice tinged with excitement and pride. "Your diligent work has paid off. The information you've provided us so far has been really good in building our case."

Emmett's grin widened, and he nudged Edward playfully. "Looks like we're once again the heroes, huh, Ed?"

Laughter filled the room as everyone shared in the camaraderie. Edward couldn't help but smile. "Don't let it go to your head, Em."

Jacob nodded, acknowledging the healthy banter between the brothers. "Absolutely. Your insights have been invaluable. The intel you've provided has helped us identify some key players we were previously unaware of. Marcus reaching out to Charlie is a major breakthrough, and it may expedite everything for us."

Agent Young leaned forward, her analytical mind already processing the new information. "Black, have we pinpointed any weak points or vulnerabilities within their crew?"

Jacob's eyes sparkled with an appreciation for Young's keen focus. "Good question, Young. Yorkie, can you shed some light on that?"

Agent Yorkie, drawing from his vast experience, shared his findings. "Based on our analysis, their internal communication network seems to have some weaknesses. I will send you the report later today, which will outline the potential vulnerabilities we can leverage. Plus, we have traced a series of financial transactions that suggest Marcus' involvement in questionable activities. But it is not crystal clear; hopefully, we can establish a concrete connection to Charlie; it's a lead were actively pursuing. I am not gonna lie; they are really good; they don't leave any crumbs."

Emmett leaned back in his chair, wearing a proud smirk. "So, what's the plan now, Jacob?"

Jacob leaned forward, his gaze intense. "Now that we know that the Consegliere has mentioned you both to Charlie, we need to ensure that you guys are prepared for what is to come. We can't afford to say or do anything suspicious that might draw attention. I mean, I am not going to tell you how to do your job, but a single misstep could compromise the entire operation. The second he smells something, this thing will blow quickly on everyone's faces. And there is too much interest in this operation. Also, Newton," Jacob continued, "I want you to double-check the boys' new background; everything must be airtight; I don't care what you must do; if you need to issue them a dead certificate, we are going to do so. Make sure everything is refined. Waters continue profiling Marcus and the others, and we need to anticipate how they would react and anticipate their moves; I need a report by tomorrow end of the day."

Agent Newton and Agent Waters nodded simultaneously, fully understanding the gravity of the situation. Years of hard work had led them to this point, and success was imperative.

Yorkie chimed in with a proud smile: "Also, I want to add that my team and I have successfully erased all traces of your faces from street video recordings for the past seven years. It's as if you never set foot in this city."

Edward was well aware of the FBI's capabilities, having been a part of numerous actions in the past. Yet, he couldn't help but feel a strange mix of awe and vulnerability when on the receiving end of such measures.

Edward's eyes flickered with a mix of apprehension. "Great job guys, and we understand the risks, Jake. We've come too far to back down now."

Nods of agreement and encouragement circled the virtual room, with Jacob's belief in Edward and Emmett unwavering. They all knew that this was the moment they had been working towards, where their meticulous planning would be put to the test.

In a rare display of vulnerability, Edward turned to his team. "Before we move forward, I need you to do me a favor Jake. Can you relay a couple of messages for me? Find a way to let my mom and dad know we're okay. My mom is a worrier, and it has been over six months now; I know when she does, she bakes. My dad is probably going crazy with her."

The team laughed understanding the importance of easing the worries of their loved ones. As the video call concluded, the apartment remained charged with an electric energy.

Edward and Emmett shared a knowing glance, their determination solidifying with each passing second. But as Edward prepared for the challenges that lay ahead, his mind couldn't help but be consumed by thoughts of Isabella Swan. The mere mention of her name sent a wave of attraction coursing through him, even though he had never met her. He struggled to understand why he couldn't stop thinking about her beautiful face. It was just a crush, nothing more.

He dreaded meeting her; it was bound to happen, and he does not want to act like an idiot; what if her presence intensifies the pull he feels towards her? He is not an idiot, she is gorgeous, totally his type, and he hopes that maybe, knowing her will change everything. Maybe she is an entitled figure; maybe she is heavily involved with her father's work, which would be a total turn-off; maybe she is a rude and cold woman. Yeah, Edward was hoping that her personality would ruin that infatuation.

Emmett, sensing Edward's inner turmoil, placed a comforting hand on his brother's shoulder. "You can't deny it, bro. You have it bad. Just be careful because she might be like her dad or something." It is freaky how Emmett sometimes can read his mind. "You can't let your personal desires cloud your judgement."

Edward sighed, his gaze fixed on the cityscape outside. With renewed determination, Edward pushed aside his personal longings toward Isabella and try to refocus on the task at hand. The city below sparkled with life, oblivious to the clandestine operation unfolding high above its bustling streets.

"I know, Em. I will not let myself be distracted by anything. I swear our mission comes first." He heard Emmett murmured something under his breath but chose to ignore it for now.

Just as the words left Edward's lips, his phone rang, cutting through the room's stillness. Emmett's sharp green eyes turned toward him, their anticipation palpable. Edward's heart raced as he glanced at the screen—it was Caius Swan calling. Well, that was not part of the plan. Why would Caius Swan, the underboss, call them?

Emmett was looking at him surprised, gesturing for him to pick up the phone before it stopped ringing. Taking a deep breath, Edward accepted the call, the weight of anticipation settling upon his shoulders. As he raised the phone to his ear, he knew that this conversation would mark the beginning of a perilous journey, where the lines between duty and desire would blur, and the path they were treading would grow ever more treacherous.
