Chapter 7: Unveiling Hidden Dangers

As Edward and Emmett stepped into their apartment, the weight of the recent meeting with Bella lingered in Edward's mind. However, he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief that everything had gone according to plan regarding the burned body. The team had devised a strategy for this operation: if it failed, they would send a stress signal, but if all went smoothly, no contact would be made. It was a complex operation, involving multiple departments such as the FBI's Organized Crime Division and local law enforcement. The fact that they hadn't needed to reach out to them was a success for everyone involved.

Edward couldn't deny the underlying stress that accompanied the mission. Now that it was finally over, he exhaled deeply. The reports detailing Amelia Morgan's death would circulate soon, ensuring that Charlie and anyone after her would believe she was truly gone. They would keep her hidden until the trial started.

Emmett plopped down onto the couch, exhausted, "Oof! So glad to be home. I'm wrecked!"

Edward nodded, sharing the sentiment. "I know exactly how you feel. I could use a vacation."

Emmett grinned mischievously. "Let me guess, a certain Italian brunette would be joining you there?"

Edward couldn't help but smirk at the thought of spending time with Isabella under the sun.

Emmett's tone shifted to a more serious one. "By the way, make sure you downplay whatever happened earlier with her. This is a dangerous game you're playing. I know you like her and all, but things could blow up in everyone's faces if this goes south."

"Don't worry," Edward assured him. "Chances are, we won't see much of her..."

Emmett chuckled. "I mean, I'm not opposed to some blowing action, you know."

Edward playfully tossed a pillow at his brother. "Yeah, spare me the picture. Besides, I don't think any of us will be getting any action anytime soon."

Edward couldn't deny the allure of Isabella. From the moment he had seen her picture and watched her recordings, he knew she was his type. However, he understood the importance of compartmentalization and the need to keep personal feelings separate from the mission. Yet, beneath the surface, he could sense the beginning battle waged within him, torn between attraction and duty. But he was always a professional, efficient, and always brought results; that was why he was chosen for this high-profile operation. He would not disappoint anyone.

"So what is next on the docket," Emmett asked while preparing something to eat for both of them. It had been a while since they lived together, and Emmett had become more independent in the kitchen, thanks to Rosalie.

"I think after everything that happened; we are definitely on their radar. We gotta thread lightly with the others, act the same, answer when Simon needs something," Edward replied, reflecting on their situation. "But I suspect that Caius or Charlie might be using us now; I mean, the man said it himself."

Edward sat at their small kitchen island, watching his brother make them some nachos. He couldn't wait to eat; he was famished.

"Okay then, let's say that we get closer to Charlie, which means there's a high chance that you'll meet Isabella. What's the plan? You live here happily ever after with her family and a bunch of kids? Scratch that, Mom would actually kill you if you kept her from her grandkids."

When Edward didn't answer, Emmett continued: "I'm just saying, it's all fun now, but be careful. I don't blame you, but I'm into blondes." He smirked.

Edward remained silent for a moment, contemplating his brother's words. "Can we talk about something else?"

Emmett grinned knowingly. "Fair enough. Oh, and before I forget, we need to collect the materials the team left for us at the sea dock, right?"

The team had arranged a discreet drop-off, providing them with all the necessary recording equipment to bug all of Swan's known locations. They would have to be careful and discreet. But they had done this countless times before. With this setup, the team would receive real-time information.

"Yeah! We start with the one in New Jersey, then go from there." Edward explained. The Swans currently have four secret meeting locations, all underground.

"Cool, I believe Victoria is familiar with that place; we can somehow arrange for her to get us there and spot the place to see where we could have a camera," Emmett suggested.

"Sounds like a plan! And we'll go back at another time to do it."

"Cool!" They sat around the kitchen table, eating the nachos with some beer. "When I looked at the blueprint, we would need to bug three different spots: the main hall, the main office and the storage room."

"Yeah, when do you think we'll do the other locations? Emmett asked.

"We'll figure it out! I'll say with go slow with this, so no one gets suspicious." Edward replied.

"I don't want to end up in the Hudson River." Emmett joked.

In the days that followed, he couldn't shake the memory of Bella, but kept with the appearances with everything else. He had an interesting meeting with James, which took him by surprise. They were not really friends, just people that work at the same place but it was surprising when he asked him about his past jobs that Simon gave them, who were there, … other. I mean, he will give him props because without his training you wouldn't think any of it, but he knew better. It seemed maybe something big was coming up. He hoped he would get more information soon.

They were currently with Simon in a building under construction. Simon, as always, was his usual self – Stoic, toothpick in his mouth, and always typing away on his phone. He was in charge of a lot of operational stuff and kept tabs on everyone.

There was a little bit of tension in the air as Edward noticed Victoria engaged in a heated conversation with James and some other suspicious-looking guy. These two were always fighting; you would think they were in a relationship. James had mentioned that they were just "fuck buddies," but he suspected Victoria wanted more.

A black Sudan pulled up nearby, and Caius emerged from it, his black tailored suit emphasizing his authority. Everyone nodded at him as a sign of respect.

"Hey everyone, it's good to see you guys!" Caius greeted everyone. He was fairly friendly, but he is more the type to listen than talk. You would be the one assessing everyone around him.

"Hi boss!" they all replied.

"Any news from our guy Simon?" Caius inquired, looking at Simon.

"No boss, nothing so far, but I will keep pressing." Simon responded.

"Masen, Will," Caius began, his piercing gaze fixed upon them, "I would need your help for something important. It's last minute, but Charlie asked for you guys specifically."

Edward and Emmett looked at each other, curious about what it could be.

"So my niece, Isa, has her exhibition art tomorrow evening, we encountered some issues with her usual security detail, and we need to secure her during that time," Caius explained, showing his concern for his niece. It's impressive the level of security that they have established around her. It made sense; she was the daughter of the boss.

Edward's heart quickened at the thought of seeing Isabella again. He kept his composure, though.

"Of course, Boss!" Emmett replied confidently.

"It's important that you don't fuck this up. Capisce?'' Caius warned sternly, and both men nodded in understanding.

He continued. "Simon, make sure to give them all the information on who is on the invite list and the layout of the place. Now, let's get back to business."

Simon nodded. Caius then pulled him aside to talk to him, their conversation too distant to be overheard. Edward's attention was brought back to Victoria.

"How come you guys get to be in the same room with Isabella? Usually, none of us are not even allowed to mention her name," Victoria said with a mix of curiosity and jealousy.

"Stop, Vicky. Jealousy doesn't look good on you," James retorted, lighting up a cigarette and walking towards Simon.

Reluctantly and with a squinted look, Victoria followed James. As the team dispersed, Edward and Emmett exchanged glances, both aware that now, they were in the heart of things now.

The opulent gallery unfolded before Edward and Emmett, their eyes glancing around in awe. Expansive windows framed a panoramic view of the city, serving as a breathtaking backdrop that heightened the overall art show experience. The refined setting, juxtaposed against the bustling urban life, created a dynamic atmosphere and a touch of modernity to the event.

The ambient lighting cast a warm, inviting glow on the meticulously decorated space, enhancing the exquisite artwork adorning the walls. Edward didn't know much about paintings, but as he looked around, there were of various styles and techniques, ranging from bold and abstract to delicate and figurative. All the pieces formed a cohesive narrative that enticed and engaged everyone in the gallery.

They could hear soft melodies harmonizing with the vibrant atmosphere. The scent of fresh flowers delicately permeated the air, enhancing the sensory experience. The gallery servers moved gracefully through the space, with trays laden with delectable canapés were presented with flair and ensuring that everyone had a flute of champagne in hand.

All the attendees were dressed elegantly; they strolled leisurely through the gallery, captivated by the paintings. Conversations reverberated in hushed tones; words like "brushstroke," "colours," "depth," and "amazing" flowed effortlessly amidst the crowd. It was mind-blowing to Edward to watch people be amazed by colours and brushstrokes.

Edward and Emmett, as required, were impeccably dressed in tailored suits and ties, seamlessly blending with the sophisticated surroundings. Their eyes scanned the room, searching for any signs of potential threats or suspicious activity. Everything was going smoothly, which they hoped for.

The sound of clapping broke Edward's attention, drawing his gaze to the center of the room. And there she stood, standing in all her glory. Every eye in the gallery fixated on her. A woman most likely her assistant, stood nearby her with an iPad in hand.

She wore a slinky black sequined gown with two major cut-outs on the sides. She paired it with emerald jewellery and a slick and tight ponytail. She looked absolutely amazing!

The dress accentuated her beautiful curves. Letting you know she was all woman.

As the applause died down, a waiter approached Isabella, handing her a glass of champagne, which she graciously accepted with a smile of gratitude. Her gaze wandered across the room until it landed on Edward's.

"Hello! Hello everyone! It really warms my heart to finally present to you my collection," Isabella addressed the audience, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "This project is a labour of love; the Lighthouse Collection holds great significance for me and my family. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to them, as well as my exceptional team; they would never admit it, but I'm sure they wanted to kill me more than once," she joked, eliciting laughter from the crowd. "I hope you enjoy each piece, and I eagerly look forward to meeting each and every one of you."

Applause filled the room, and guests resumed their activities. She turned around to kiss someone, and that was when Edward noticed that the cut-outs extended to reveal a glimpse of her back, what he wouldn't give to touch it.

He couldn't tear his gaze away from Isabella as she gracefully moved through the crowd, a radiant smile on her lips. She would stop and talk to some people; she would smile, hug and look at the painting. She was in her element. Her assistant was not far away from her and from time to time they would exchange small talks.

Emmett nudged Edward playfully, a knowing smirk on his face. Edward's cheeks tinged with a slight blush, " Stay focus," he reminded his brother.

As they discreetly moved through the gallery, Edward and Emmett observed the guests mingling. Emmett leaned in, his voice low but filled with playful intrigue. "So, what's the plan, little bro? You gonna strike up a conversation and charm the lady again?"

Edward's lips curved into a small smile as he glanced at Isabella. "I don't know. Also, it wouldn't be wise to do that now."

Emmett shrugged. As the evening progressed, Edward found himself drawn closer to Isabella's orbit, their paths crossing several times. Unless he was hallucinating, he would catch her looking at him."

He found himself in front of a painting and looking at the shape of the face and the intricating blocks. Lost in the moment, he was startled with Isabella beside him; her eyes fixated on the same artwork.

"What do you think?" she asked, her voice filled with a subtle curiosity.

Edward's heart skipped a beat, momentarily caught off guard by her proximity. He nodded, his gaze fixed on the painting. " It's captivating. The artist definitely knows what she's doing."

Isabella turned around to face him, a hint of a rosy blush colouring her cheeks. "Masen, right?" she inquired, seeking confirmation. Edward nodded.

"I'm thrilled that you're here tonight. My father mentioned that you would be part of my security detail until my usual team returns," Isabella said, her voice softening. He could smell her perfume.

Edward's eyes remained locked with Isabella's, a mixture of respect and sincerity in his voice. "It's an honour to be entrusted with your safety, Isabella," he replied, his voice filled with sincerity.

"Bella," she interjected, her voice gentle. "You can call me Bella."

Edward's surprise was met with a nod of understanding. "Bella, then," he acknowledged, his voice growing warm.

''Also, I don't believe you will say that after dealing with me.'' Isabella's laughter danced in the air as she playfully touched his arm.

''As long you're safe, I don't care." A small smile tugged at Edward's lips. And he meant it.

He has seen her going around the gallery; she is gentle but strong, probably the effect of being Charlie's daughter.

''You are very talented, Isabella!" Edward expressed, his admiration evident in his tone. "These are really beautiful; I don't know all the technical about colour and stuff, but I know when something is impressive to look at.'' He continued.

And there it is. That delicate blush. Edward's hands twitched wanting to touch her face. Her chocolate eyes locked with his, exuding a captivating intensity.

"Thank you so much, Art has always been my way of expressing myself, and from the moment I first picked a brush, I've never been able to put it down.'' Isabella revealed, her voice filled with a mix of passion and vulnerability.

Edward found himself utterly captivated by her words, leaving him longing for more.

Breaking the spell momentarily, Edward chuckled. "So can you explain to me the way to read these so I don't feel like an idiot?"

Isabella's eyes sparkled with amusement, which started a whole conversation on what she was trying to convey and what colours she used to do. She definitely was animated and not shy about showing her skills. He was really impressed by her. She had confidence in her that was really sexy! He kept asking questions to keep her talking.

Meanwhile, Emmett kept a watchful eye on Edward, his concern mingling with a hint of amusement. He will definitely give him shit later. He knew that Edward understood the risk he was taking, he wasn't dumb, but also, He could see they have chemistry. He hoped that Edward had a plan for what lay ahead.

A sudden commotion shattered the tranquillity. Edward's instincts kicked in; he swiftly positioned himself in front of Isabella. Other guards came around to form a circle around her and directed her to the back away from the action. Two people in black gear and masks were going around trying to take some pieces; he could see they were amateurs and had not thought clearly of their plan. Who in their right mind, would try to attack Charlie's daughter.

The room erupted in chaos as security personnel and the thieves clashed, creating a scene; Edward and Emmett sprang into action and quickly apprehended them. Probably they saw an opportunity and tried to take it, but wrong place, wrong person.

Not long after, servers quickly cleaned the space, and the gallery returned to its original state. The rest of the guards took them away; he could imagine what was going to happen.

Edward walked around the room, making sure everything else is in order. The adrenaline still coursing through his veins. What just happened was just a blimp, but the thought that it happened while Isabella, Bella, was there did not sit right with him. A quick look at Emmett confirmed that everything was alright.

He was startled when Isabella approached him. "Hey, thank you; I can see what my dad was talking about," Isabella said, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.

Edward's heart swelled. "No thanks needed; it's my job. The last thing I want is the boss being mad at me for putting his only daughter in danger." They both chuckled. She returned to her guests, and he went back to his position.

As the art show drew to a close, Edward felt a mix of emotions. She watched her bid farewell to her team and made her way toward the exit, her Jeep waiting outside. As required, he followed her outside and opened her car door for her; before she got in, she said:

"Thank you again, Masen! It seems that we will be seeing a lot of each other; I'm looking forward to it," she said.

A smile tugged at Edward's lips. "You and me both Bella!"

He waited until she was fully in and one last glance, she drove away.

So what do you think?
