Arc II: Part X

Sirius cautiously stepped deeper into the forest, his wand illuminating the path before him with a soft, bluish glow. Each step he took was measured and deliberate, his senses heightened to the slightest sound or movement around him. Janna, stayed close behind, her breath barely audible in the stillness of the night.

As they ventured further into the heart of the forest, the towering trees closed in around them, their branches intertwining overhead like a twisted canopy. The dense foliage blocked out the starry sky, casting an eerie darkness upon the path. No longer guided by the gentle moonlight, Sirius relied solely on the flickering illumination emanating from his wand.

Time seemed to stretch as they pressed on, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger. The rustling of leaves and distant whispers of wind played tricks on their senses, making them acutely aware of the hidden life that dwelled within the forest's depths.

Suddenly, a faint sound caught Sirius's attention. It was a soft rustling, barely discernible amidst the symphony of nocturnal noises. He swiftly raised his hand, signaling Janna to halt. They stood frozen, their breath held in anticipation, as a wave of movement rippled through the undergrowth ahead.

In an instant, the ground before them seemed to come alive. A multitude of creatures scurried and scampered, their tiny forms creating a chaotic blur of fur and feathers. Rats scuttled, squirrels darted, rabbits bounded, and foxes dashed, all desperately fleeing from an unknown threat. Their paths intersected with Sirius and Janna's, brushing against their feet before vanishing into the obscurity behind them.

Sirius's heart pounded in his chest, his wand still poised in front of him, ready to defend against any imminent danger. He strained his ears, expecting a lurking adversary to reveal itself from the shrouded depths of the surrounding trees. But silence prevailed, the only sound being the echoes of the retreating animals dissipating into the night.

Taking a deep breath, Sirius cautiously resumed their journey, his mind racing to comprehend their current location. The dense darkness enveloped them, obscuring the once-familiar features of the forest. It reminded him of the forbidden forest at Hogwarts, a place teeming with unknown creatures and hidden perils. A mixture of trepidation and curiosity swelled within him, as he recognized the unsettling familiarity of this haunting panorama, despite never having ventured this deep into the woods, not even during full moon nights when he his werewolf friend provided the best protection.

After a brief intermission, Sirius motioned for Janna to join him once more. They retraced the path Janna had recalled from their earlier escape, only to halt abruptly as Sirius sensed a faint vibration tickling his face. Waving his wand with a slight gesture, he softly uttered the incantation "revelio." Within moments, a luminous golden barrier materialized before them, resembling a delicate silk veil adorned with intricate grey patterns.

"What is this?" Janna whispered from behind him.

"It's a ward... It's so ancient that it's on the brink of disappearing," Sirius responded, studying the ward as its color gradually faded.

Some wards possess the potential to inflict irreparable harm if traversed without the appropriate spell serving as a key. Hence, Sirius paused for a moment, contemplating the potential peril it entailed. Though he believed he could venture to the opposite side, he had to ensure he was adequately prepared to confront any lurking dangers. The teenage girl beside him, anxiously fixated on the ward, appeared to have unwittingly crossed it not once, but twice, once in search of the statutes she mentioned and once again in a hasty retreat.

On the other hand, if the intention behind this ward was to confine something or someone within its boundaries or deter individuals from approaching it too closely... it was undeniably failing in its mission, for Janna had successfully breached it. However, upon a brief glance at the girl, it appeared that she had not suffered any adverse consequences from her trespass.

Having collected himself for a moment, Sirius drew in a deep breath and bravely advanced, traversing the ward to access the opposing side. He scrutinized his body, exhaling in relief as he observed his unscathed state, even if he had experienced a faint tremor. From this point onward, he resolved to exercise greater caution, for they had now entered the opponent's territory. Or, at the very least, an area that someone sought to conceal from both wizards and Muggles alike.

Sirius pondered the prospect of proceeding further in his Padfoot form, recognizing that a dog would possess greater discretion and stealth compared to a human. However, he acknowledged the drawback of needing to revert to his human form in order to defend himself should an attack occur. Depending on the severity of the threat, he might not have sufficient time to execute both transformations. Furthermore, having Janna accompany him would offer little assistance in this situation.

However, just as Sirius and Janna prepared to forge ahead, they were abruptly startled and swiftly spun around, brandishing their wands. A cracking noise echoed behind them, accompanied by a faint whimper of pain and a familiar, yet diminutive voice uttering a string of curses that caused Sirius an overwhelming urge to slam his head against the nearest solid shape around.

"Alexa! I specifically told you to stay at home!" scolded Sirius, while he brushed off the dust from his jeans.

"I tried! But waiting there all alone was driving me crazy!" Alexa replied, walking toward them.

"How long did you actually wait? Because seen to have you left pretty quickly if my ward didn't stop you!" Sirius retorted.

"It's clear that she followed us..." Janna interjected.

"Nobody asked you," Sirius snapped at the girl.

"Well... Yes! I followed you, and I don't regret it!" Alexa declared.

"Alright... I understand; I was also stubborn at your age. Regardless, now that I've passed the ward and I'm approaching those statues, I don't need your help anymore. So, Alexa, Janna, go back home. Thank you for your assistance!" Sirius said, flashing a quick smile before turning his back on them and continuing to walk.

Alexa hurriedly ran after him and grabbed his shirt to make him stop. "Sirius! Don't be foolish; you need our help! You can't go alone!"

"No, I don't!" Sirius retorted.

"Stop trying to be a hero, dude!" Janna sneered.

"Shut up, Janna!" Alexa shouted at her before refocusing her attention on Sirius. "Sirius, please! My dad might be hurt, and maybe even my mom too!"

"Alexa! I have absolutely no idea what's there but trust me, I can handle it alone. Besides, the Aurors have probably already received my Patronus, so the situation will be under control very soon! So, please! Go back home before you end up getting hurt!" Sirius said firmly.

"I CAN'T!" Alexa exclaimed, her voice filled with frustration. "If Harry is surrounded by Death Eaters or face to face with Voldemort and... I don't know... Dumbledore instructs you to stay safe at home while the Aurors handle the situation, would you comply?"

"It's not the same," Sirius replied.

"WOULD YOU COMPLY?" Alexa shouted, her voice growing louder.

"Stop shouting!" Janna whispered, sounding exasperated.

Sirius let out a sigh and responded, "No... I would go."

"Well, it's the same for me! Whether you like it or not, I will go. So, we can either support each other or go our separate ways, but I will go!" Alexa declared.

"Alexa, I understand your perspective, but take a moment to think about it. You're twelve and the other one is fourteen..." Sirius began.

"I'm fifteen!" Janna interjected.

"Wonderful! Alexa, let me remind you that your mother leaves the lights on at night in the hallway in case you need to use the bathroom because you're afraid of the dark!" Sirius remarked.

"That's not true!" Alexa protested, blushing, while Janna burst into laughter.

"You should blush instead of laughing," Sirius scolded Janna with a stern glare. "Okay, enough..."

"Don't you want to at least know what you're getting into?" Alexa asked, raising an eyebrow.

"And how would you know?" Sirius retorted, rolling his eyes.

"I pondered over what she told us while I was following you, and I deduced that it could be nothing else," Alexa explained.

"Alright, so what is it?" Sirius inquired.

"I'll tell you if you take me with you," Alexa proposed.

"Otherwise, you'd let me go there blindfolded?" Sirius questioned.

"You'd only have yourself to blame, as I offered my help and you refused," Alexa stated. "However, once you hear what I have to say, you'll be the one asking us to accompany you."

"Fine... Maybe I'll let you come if you promise to obey all my commands, provide assistance from a safe distance, and flee if things go wrong," Sirius negotiated.

"Deal!" both girls chimed in.

"Deal... Now, tell me what you know," Sirius requested.

"It's a gorgon," Alexa revealed.

Sirius closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh. "Merlin..."

"What now?" Alexa asked, rolling her eyes.

"Do you think I didn't consider that possibility when I heard about the statues?" Sirius retorted.

"So?" Alexa inquired.

"Gorgons became extinct thousands of years ago. Perseus slew the last of them... And as far as we know, they petrify their victims; they don't transform them into stone," Sirius stated.

"What's the difference?" Janna inquired.

"Petrification entails a state where you are unable to move or respond, but your physical composition remains unchanged, still flesh rather than stone... It falls under the category of charms. Turning someone into stone, on the other hand, involves a process of transfiguration," Sirius explained.

"Do you recall when you advised me to stop thinking like a muggle and adopt a more magical perspective?" Alexa reminded.

"Yes, and?" Sirius questioned.

"Five minutes before the arrival of the man from the Ministry of Magic at our doorstep, I would never have fathomed the existence of magic. I firmly believed it was nothing more than a children's tale... But then, I stumbled upon an entire secret world," Alexa recounted.

"And your point is...?" Sirius prompted.

"Consider the possibility that you don't already possess all knowledge and that there may still be things the entire world remains ignorant of or misunderstands due to scarce attention, or simply for looking in the wrong places," Alexa suggested.

Sirius remained silent for a moment as he gazed at her before uttering, "I suppose I won't win this debate, am I correct?"

"Sirius, please! It's not about winning an argument..." Alexa implored.

"Okay... Tell me more about that place," Sirius told Janna.

"It's a clearing... As I said, there are numerous statues... And they were positioned around an Archway," Janna explained.

"An Archway?" Alexa interjected.

"Yes, it was quite frightening... It was tall and appeared to have some sort of..."

" Veil floating inside? Did you happen to see a man there? Approximately the same size as Sirius, with..." Alexa asked.

"Please calm down, Alexa... Let's focus on describing that Archway!" Sirius interjected.

"It was exactly as she described... The moment I laid eyes on it, it gave me chills, so I insisted that we keep our distance..." Janna shared, before turning to Alexa. "How do you know about it?"

"I saw it in my dreams... The same dream where I saw Sirius's Patronus, although at that time I mistook Sirius for the dog," Alexa explained.

"What on earth are you talking about?" Janna asked, furrowing her brow. "What dreams?"

"It's possible; sometimes we can receive visions while we sleep... It's just not very common. Regardless, you did the right thing by avoiding that Archway..." Sirius commented.

"Do you know what that is?" Alexa inquired.

"Not much... My grandfather once informed me that there is one matching that description in the British Ministry of Magic. It was used a long time ago for executions until the death penalty was changed to dementors kiss," Sirius explained. "Tell me more about the statues."

"They are incredibly lifelike, depicting people from various ages and time periods. All of them appear surprised or choked. I believe they didn't have any time to react before being turned... And Rea mentioned how terrifying it was, so I doubt it was a human being," Janna added.

Sirius leaned back against a tree, scratching his chin. "I wish Remus was here; magical beasts have always been his passion... Figuratively and literally speaking," he mused to himself.

"As I mentioned earlier, gorgons went extinct thousands of years ago... The only recorded instances were actually the sisters: Stheno, Euryale, and the most famous of the three, Medusa. They were all killed by Perseus, although only one of those stories is widely known... That's the only concrete historical fact we have, and we're uncertain about their exact appearance."

Sirius closed his eyes and silently attempted to organize the information he had received, trying to minimize speculation. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to let them accompany him after all.

"Alright... I have a plan. Once we're there, I'll need someone to cover my back. So, Alexa, we'll find you a tree you can climb, and keep watch for me, alerting me if you notice anything."

"Got it!" Alexa replied.

"And you, Jenny..." Sirius began.

"Janna," Janna corrected.

"Right... Since we don't precisely understand how its powers work, I'll need to witness it in action before deciding what to do. Perhaps it requires some time to recharge between attacks... So, you'll go into the clearing first as bait. As soon as you get turned to stone, I'll launch an attack from behind... Assuming it has a vulnerable spot, of course," Sirius explained.

"How about 'fuck you'?" Janna retorted.

"Sounds good to me!" Alexa chimed in, nodding.

"Shut up, midget!" Janna exclaimed, her voice filled with frustration, as she directed her words toward Alexa.

Sirius let out a sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Alright... alright... Alexa will keep a lookout for us, and we'll move together. We'll proceed cautiously, using the statues as cover. Then, we'll head straight to your friend's statue and levitate them up to the tree where Alexa will be positioned. Can you handle that?" Sirius asked.

"Yes... but what if I accidentally break one?" Janna inquired.

"Well, just make sure not to break anything," Sirius responded.

"What about my dad? And my mom?" Alexa interjected.

"They're most likely not even there... Anyway, we'll start by locating the statues of the girls first since we know where they are. Afterward, I'll come back and search for your parents. When you're positioned, if you see any statues that resemble your dad or mom in shape or for any other reason, point me in their direction. Alright?" Sirius explained.

"Or I could sneak over to them and levitate them like you're planning to do with the other two," Alexa suggested.

"Absolutely not!" Sirius exclaimed firmly.

"Sirius... now that I think about it, I'm certain that it can turn you to stone if it makes eye contact. This afternoon, Rea saw it and described it as terrifying. It must have seen us too... Only, we didn't transform immediately. So, I suppose its power relies on eye contact," Janna shared.

"And you're telling me this now?" Sirius scolded her.

"Well..." Janna trailed off.

"It changes everything!" Sirius exclaimed.

"Not really!" Janna retorted.

"Yes, it does! If that's how it works, I just have to avoid eye contact. I can still anticipate its movements by observing other parts of its body or slow it down with a spell..." Sirius declared. "Let's go, and it's time for both of you to get your wands ready."

They reached the clearing in less than ten minutes and came to a halt just before the final row of trees. Sirius assisted Alexa in ascending to a branch and clasping her hand.

"Remember what we've discussed, all right? Stay safe and remain vigilant! If you catch sight of it, illuminate your wand twice, and if you spot the Aurors, three times—my Patronus should have reached them by now," Sirius instructed.

"Understood... Just... be careful, okay?" Alexa replied, her voice lacking the same level of confidence she had ten minutes earlier.

Sirius squeezed her hand before he and Janna departed. Upon entering the clearing, they were greeted by a refreshing breeze and utter silence. Just as Janna had described, the area was adorned with statues that encircled a tall, ominous Archway. The atmosphere was particularly somber. They proceeded cautiously, ensuring not to create any sound. As they passed the initial rows of statues, Sirius felt Janna's heavy breath tickling his neck and stole a glance at her over his shoulder. Her face glistened with sweat, and she continuously scanned her surroundings. Sirius halted and turned to directly face her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Listen... I'm scared too, so if you want to go back and let me handle this..." Sirius whispered.

"No... They've been my friends since I was five years old, and you can dislike them all you want; we've been like sisters to each other when our real families weren't there. So, I want to do this... I want to be here because I'm not sure I can live if they die," Janna whispered back.

"Is it only because they're your friends, or is there something else you want to make amends for?" Sirius whispered.

Janna lowered her head and sighed before looking back at him. "I regret it; things went too far... And I despise myself for enjoying it. I wish I could go back in time and stop us."

"We all have reasons we wish we could turn back time and change, but you being here is already admirable; it's your soul speaking to you... Your soul has had enough of your nonsense and is trying to save you from crossing the line," Sirius said, glancing toward where Alexa was hidden, "Do you know why I truly dislike you?"

"Why?" Janna asked.

"Because you and your friends took a remarkable girl and set her on a path to become just like you... Earlier, I told her I stopped training her because I sensed something strange emanating from the forest, but that's not the only reason. I stopped because I felt she was slowly becoming 'darker'... and I thought maybe she needed to be closer to her mother than me," Sirius said, "You have no idea the pain she endured because of you, the kind that can shatter someone's beliefs."

"How can I ever make amends for what I've done?" Janna asked.

"By preventing her from going any further... If she sees that you can change and repent," Sirius said.

Janna nodded slowly before saying, "I'll do my best."

"That would be great," Sirius said, kneeling on the grass and planting his wand in the ground, "Horribilis Revelio," he whispered. A small blue circle appeared around his wand before expanding around them, continuing to expand until it reached the trees surrounding the clearing, marking its limits.

Sirius stayed down for a moment, carefully surveying their surroundings. Then he stood up and patted Janna's arm. "For now, we're alone, so let's find everyone and get the hell out of this place."

"Yuna is over there," Janna said, pointing at The Archway, "And we tried running in that direction," she added, pointing to her right, "So I suppose Rea should be there."

"Alright... I'll get Yuna, and you find Rea."

Janna nodded and headed east, discreetly taking cover behind statues at regular intervals. She checked if the path was still clear before proceeding any further.

Sirius turned towards the direction of the Archway and began walking towards it, holding his wand above his head as a precaution. He cautiously maneuvered through the statues, wondering how many people could have vanished in this place and why the Ministry hadn't discovered it yet. What kind of wizard could have placed such a powerful ward that remained undetected by the Ministry of Magic?

Finally, Sirius reached the stone platform upon which the Archway stood, bathed in the moonlight. His eyes quickly landed on a statue of a girl who strongly resembled one of the girls he had seen bullying Alexa, dressed in a similar fashion. He approached the statue, making sure to avoid stepping on a broken stele near the platform. Yuna's statue had a look of surprise on her face, with her hand positioned as if she had been trying to reach for her wand.

While Sirius gazed into the distance, contemplating the safest route for levitating the statue, he heard a whisper behind him that startled him. He spun around, pointing his wand in front of him, only to find himself alone.

The whisper grew louder, and Sirius soon realized that it originated from the Archway. He glanced at the tree where Alexa was hiding, but there were no signs of any lights indicating that she had seen anything near him. He also noticed Janna arriving at the tree, carefully placing a statue next to it, and climbing onto it to sit beside Alexa.

Sirius hesitated for a moment, preparing to levitate Yuna's statue, but the whisper intensified even more, reaching a point where he could hear it as if someone was standing right beside him. Once again, he felt drawn towards the veil; his legs seemed to move on their own accord, and he found himself facing it in no time.

"Sirius..." a familiar voice of a man called out.

"Who's there?" Sirius inquired, moving closer to the veil, his wand aimed at it. The whisper grew increasingly intense. He hesitated for a moment, then took a step nearer to the alcove. His eyes widened as he could distinctly hear the whispered words.

"Sirius..." came the voice of a young man.

"Sirius... Kreacher... Locket..." a voice that sent shivers down his spine uttered.

"Reg? Is that you?" Sirius asked.

"KEEP OFF!" a woman's voice screamed at him.

"Lily?!" Sirius questioned.

"WATCH OUT, IDIOT!" another man's voice shouted at him.

"SIRIUS, BEHIND YOU!" Alexa's voice reverberated loudly in his ears.

Sirius swiftly flung himself to the ground, taking cover behind a statue of a knight, just in time to hear the sound of another statue shattering into pieces. He cautiously peered out from his hiding spot and saw the source of the attack standing exactly where he had been mere moments ago, scanning the area in search of him.

It was a sight, unlike anything he had ever witnessed before, a nightmare brought to life. If one were to mistake it for a gorgon, the world's depiction couldn't be more deceiving. Its lower body resembled an elongated tail, resembling a monstrous serpent of immense proportions. However, the upper part was a grotesque combination, akin to a troll's torso, its repulsive skin matted with swollen warts. The entire creature's form was adorned with a sinister mosaic of dark yellow and black scales, adding to its abominable appearance.

From its back and sides sprouted two pitifully small bat wings and six emaciated arms, grotesque appendages that defied all reason. But the true terror lay in its head, a nightmarish spectacle in its own right. Countless hissing snakes writhed and slithered upon it, their venomous fangs locked in a constant deadly dance. They clashed and tore at each other without respite, causing the creature's back to glisten in the moonlight, reflecting the macabre spectacle of bloodshed.

With every snake that perished, another promptly emerged from the creature's repulsive crown, eagerly seeking its next victim. The never-ending cycle of death and violence played out before his eyes, a grotesque symphony that instilled an unshakable dread deep within his soul.

Sirius capitalized on the creature's momentary bewilderment, deftly retreating and finding refuge behind the statues, his vigilant gaze fixed upon its every move. Engaging in a battle under these circumstances would be nothing short of foolhardy and self-destructive; the Aurors were bound to arrive imminently, ready to take charge of the situation. Instead, Sirius focused on a more pressing objective: he needed to discreetly reunite with Alexa and Janna, ensuring their safe return home through a careful side-apparition.

However, it appeared that the creature possessed an uncanny ability to detect his presence. Its attention abruptly shifted, locking it onto Sirius' position. With a swift and unnerving motion, the creature twisted its body, crawling purposefully toward him, its arms propelling it forward in an unsettling display of determination.

Sirius averted his gaze, refusing to meet the creature's malevolent eyes. With swift determination, he unleashed a stunning spell that found its mark, striking the creature square in the chest. The impact momentarily halted its advance, affording Sirius a precious window of opportunity. Seizing the moment, he swiftly turned on his heels and sprinted towards the awaiting girls who had gracefully descended from the tree. In a united effort, they unleashed their own spells upon the relentless creature, creating a shield of magical blitz to cover Sirius' hasty retreat.

As Sirius dashed towards them, he could discern the unmistakable terror etched upon their faces. Alexa's voice pierced the chaos, urging him to hasten his pace, while Janna valiantly attempted to hold her back, preventing her from recklessly rushing towards him. The realization struck Sirius with a pang of dread—despite their valiant efforts, their spells seemed futile against the creature's relentless progression. The putrid stench that lingered behind him served as a sickening reminder of the creature's imminent proximity, urging Sirius to push himself even harder.

He gazed one final time at Alexa, who struggled desperately to free herself from Janna's tight grasp, pleading for her release. With a deep breath, he closed his eyes momentarily and swiftly turned around. Raising his wand, he aimed it forward and exclaimed, "DEPULSO!"

The monstrous creature, dangerously close to seizing Sirius with its razor-sharp claws, bore the full force of the spell. It was forcefully propelled away, obliterating a row of statues in its path.

The creature swiftly rose to its feet, its serpentine heads hissing menacingly. The snakes, which had ceased their internal battle, now gnashed their venomous jaws, projecting their lethal venom in Sirius' direction.

Sirius stood poised and prepared; his wand pointed directly at the creature's menacing head. With a soft incantation of "Oppugno," he summoned a swarm of crows that descended upon the monster with relentless aggression. The crows pecked ferociously at its eyes, engaging in a fierce battle against the snakes that futilely attempted to shield the creature's vulnerable orbs.

A piercing cry of agony erupted from the creature as two bloody voids replaced its once-piercing gaze. The snakes continued their struggle against the onslaught of crows, their venomous bites causing the summoned birds to dissolve into nothingness until not a single crow remained.

Now that the creature's deadliest weapon was neutralized, Sirius held the upper hand. As long as he maintained a safe distance, evading its claws, jaws, and, most crucially, the venom spat by the serpents, victory was within his grasp.

However, just as Sirius prepared to unleash another spell, the creature's shrieks pierced the air, reverberating through the clearing and unsettling Sirius to his core. Yet, as suddenly as the screams began, they ceased, leaving the creature motionless, an unsettling stillness enveloping the scene.

As if emerging from a nightmarish realm, the statues encircling Sirius came to life, their shapes lumbering with an eerie heaviness. Caught off guard, Sirius found himself yanked towards one of the statues as its rigid hand clasped his left arm. Reacting swiftly, he brandished his wand and unleashed a powerful "confringo", shattering the statue into pieces. Yet, any fleeting sense of advantage was shattered as an onslaught of statues converged upon him.

With unwavering determination, Sirius whirled his wand, obliterating or restraining the encroaching statues. But with each statue he dispatched, more arose from the shadows, joining the relentless pursuit. It was a relentless cycle, with new adversaries materializing to replace those vanquished.

As if orchestrated by the malevolent creature, the clamor of Sirius's defense drew its attention, compelling it to inch closer. Slowly, the monstrous being crawled towards him, its intent unmistakable. Realizing the danger, Sirius swiftly transformed into Padfoot, and darted away, deftly maneuvering through the maze of statues. Yet, his optimism waned as the statues ruthlessly trampled upon him, their heavy feet crashing against the grass, drowning the surroundings in a cacophony of stampede.

Despite Padfoot's remarkable agility, his canine perspective limited his field of vision. Thus, he reluctantly relinquished his animal form, assuming his human guise once again. Fortunately, his strategic maneuvering had allowed him to outmaneuver the creature, positioning himself stealthily behind its hulking form.

Sirius swiftly raised his wand, his voice echoing with the incantation of "AVADA KEDA..." However, before he could complete the curse, the creature displayed astonishing agility. Reacting with lightning speed upon hearing Sirius's voice, one of its arms coiled back, ensnaring his neck in a vise-like grip. Simultaneously, another arm seized his right arm and twisted his wrist, forcing him to release his wand, which clattered helplessly onto the grass below.

With a menacing turn towards Sirius, the creature's jaws stretched wide open, revealing a cavernous void capable of engulfing half of Sirius's body in a single bite. Desperately struggling to break free from its vice-like hold, Sirius felt his breath being stifled, his vision darkening as oxygen became scarce.

However, in a moment of serendipity, a luminous flash blazed before his eyes, accompanied by an agonized cry from the creature. In a sudden release, the monster relinquished its grip on Sirius, dropping him to the ground alongside the previously restraining limbs. Writhing in agony, the creature now wriggled and convulsed upon the grassy terrain.

To his right, Sirius spotted Alexa, her determination evident as she struggled to hoist a long, gleaming silver sword with both hands. With a resolute gesture, she presented it to Sirius, their eyes meeting in unspoken understanding. Seizing the opportunity while the creature writhed in agony, Sirius charged forward, capitalizing on its momentary distraction. With a powerful swing, he sliced through the beast's belly, releasing the monster's innards onto the ground.

Quickly rolling to the side, Sirius deftly evaded the venomous spew expelled by the snakes atop the creature's head. Raising the sword high above his head, he let the weight of the weapon descend upon the creature's neck, severing it from its body. The decapitated head tumbled to the earth, while Sirius firmly planted the blood-stained sword into the ground. Exhausted, he collapsed to his knees, his trembling hands clutching the vanishing hilt as the weapon slowly dissipated from his grip.

Gently turning his gaze towards Alexa, he surveyed her condition. Her eyes shifted between the fallen monster's head and its mutilated form sprawled upon the grass, her face contorted by a mix of horror and relief. Overwhelmed, she sank to her knees, vomiting. Sirius rose to his feet, approaching her with empathy and concern. Tenderly, he held back her hair, comforting her with a gentle pat on the back, before aiding her in finding her footing once more.

"Thank you," Alexa expressed with heartfelt gratitude.

"You're welcome," Sirius replied, his voice filled with sincerity.

"Is it truly dead? Is it finally over?" Alexa inquired, embracing his waist for comfort.

"Yes, it's dead for good... Alexa, where did you find that sword?" Sirius inquired; curiosity piqued.

"I'm not sure... When you turned to confront it... I blinked, and there it was, gleaming behind you. So, when I saw it seize you, I hurried and grabbed it," Alexa recounted.

"You saved me. It was about to devour me whole!" Sirius whispered.

"You're welcome... You see? What might have happened if I had stayed home, as you suggested?" Alexa teased, a playful smile gracing her lips as she lifted her head to meet his gaze.

"Well... Alternatively, I could have disapparated right after its first attack and taken Janna with me," Sirius mused, eliciting a playful response from Alexa as she stuck her tongue out, mimicking him. "Where is Janna?"

"Here!" Janna exclaimed, bounding towards them with a joyful expression, her hand interlocked with Yuna's.

As they reached them, the statues surrounding them crumbled, their once solid forms giving way to a flurry of ethereal specters that emerged from the wreckage. Smiling faces adorned these ghostly figures, each one slowly being drawn towards the beckoning veil within the Archway.

Once every last ghost vanished, passing through the Archway, Alexa sprinted towards a bewildered man who had emerged from the billowing cloud of dust. She leapt into his arms, embracing him tightly. Moments later, Janna and Yuna also found their loved ones, Kaia and Rea, who had materialized amidst the haze, coughing from the swirling particles.

Spotting Sirius amidst the reunion, Alexa waved her arms excitedly, signaling for him to approach. He followed her guidance, stepping towards them, and Alexa met him halfway. Taking hold of his hand, she pulled him towards the spot where her father sat, waiting, looking deeply confused.

"Dad! Meet Sirius! My dog," Alexa exclaimed, introducing them.

"Your what?" Sirius inquired, clearly perplexed.

"Oh, no! I mean the human form of Padfoot, the stupid dog you saw last time you visited. Sirius, this is Benjamin Acker, my father, but you've already met," Alexa clarified, trying to clear up the confusion.

Benjamin Acker regarded Sirius with a heavy sigh before extending his hand for a handshake. "I now understand the classified source reference... But I still have plenty of questions for you, Black."

"Later, Dad! And you have a lot to fill me in on as well... What happened to you?" Alexa asked; concern evident in her voice.

"I paused for a moment to take care of some business, and the next thing I know, my memory is blank... I'm sorry," Benjamin explained.

"Thank goodness you're safe!" Alexa exclaimed, embracing her father tightly, though his gaze never strayed from Sirius. "I wonder why the other statues didn't come back to life like you."

"Your dad has only been here for a few hours, while the others may have been here for centuries. Their magic likely sustained them until a certain point, but not indefinitely... Alexa, can we have a conversation?" Sirius requested.

"I need to stretch my legs," Benjamin interjected, excusing himself to join the other girls.

"So... What do you make of that?" Alexa asked, pointing towards the Archway. "Did you see how it absorbed all those souls?"

"Yes, I saw it... I also heard voices emanating from it... James, Lily, and my brother," Sirius disclosed.

"Do you think they can see us from the other side?" Alexa pondered.

"Yes, I believe they can! They warned me about it! But that's not the reason I wanted to speak with you," Sirius said, steering the conversation towards a different topic.

"Tell me, then," Alexa urged, her eyes fixed on Sirius.

Sirius glanced at Mr. Acker and the girls absorbed by a conversation, then gently draped an arm around Alexa's shoulder, leading her a short distance away from the Archway and the group.

"It's time for me to depart, but before I do, I want to share something with you, just in case we don't cross paths again," Sirius began.

"You don't have to hide anymore! My dad and the other girls will tell everything you've accomplished here! They'll have to listen!" Alexa declared with determination.

"Once the Ministry discovers this place, they'll launch a full-scale operation, and this serene village won't be the same anymore. I doubt you'll have the opportunity to make your case before a Dementor kisses me," Sirius explained. "Listen... In the brief time, we've known each other, you've faced numerous trials, and I wanted to ensure your heart remains in the right place."

"Well, I feel... I feel more... I feel more attuned to the true nature of the world, and I realize that I'm capable of more than I thought, as long as I don't yield to fear. But words mean nothing unless I can back them up with competence," Alexa confessed, casting a glance at the group of girls.

"Alexa, don't hesitate to seek help because you're not alone. Your family loves you. And, as you mentioned earlier, if I had come here alone, I likely would have died... But most importantly, please don't snuff that spark of goodness within you—the one that sheltered and protected me. It embodies the best version of yourself, even if you haven't fully realized it yet," Sirius implored.

"I promise... I promise I won't. What about you? Have you gained anything from all of this?" Alexa inquired.

"I have learned a few things about myself... The time I've spent with you, your family, and the friends I've made over the past months has saved me from succumbing to my darkest thoughts. Before we met, I believed I would spend the rest of my life on the run, but I have found hope! It may take as long as it needs to, but I will track down Peter because I refuse to accept his demise. And if he truly is gone, I will personally hunt down Voldemort and bring an end to him, even if it costs me my life," Sirius declared resolutely.

Alexa clung to him, tears streaming down her face, as she buried her head against his shirt. "I promise, I'll shout to the whole world who you truly are! They can call me crazy, but I'll keep saying it!"

"I know you will, but you won't have to," Sirius assured her, their gazes shifting upward to the starry night sky, where a luminous dome slowly materialized, encompassing the area while distant cracks echoed through the clearing.

"The Aurors have finally arrived! If I make my exit now, I can still slip away before the ward is fully built," Sirius said hurriedly, embracing her tightly before uttering a final "Thank you." With that, he transformed into Padfoot and darted off toward the surrounding trees.

Alexa watched him sprint away, wiping her tears as she felt her father's hand on her hair. As Sirius vanished into the darkness and the Aurors materialized in the clearing, swiftly giving chase, passing by their side, she turned to her father and asked, her voice tinged with frustration, "It's not fair... Why does he have to keep running? Why are they so stubborn in hunting him?"

"Because they are incapable of doing anything better," Benjamin responded with a hint of disdain in his voice.

"But what if they do catch him?" Alexa pressed; her concern evident.

"They won't. Illusions are elusive; you can pursue them endlessly but never truly catch them," her father assured.
