I let out a quiet yawn as I slowly sit up- or at least, I try to, but there's a weight on my chest.

Ah. Loki. The tiny black fox is curled up in a little ball on the very center of my torso.

I look to my sides to see both Zinnia and Klara at both of my sides, leeching my warmth.

Courtney is sat, leaning against the wall as she taps away on a laptop sat on... well, her lap.

I manage to snake my way from the blankets, the emotionally muted girl glancing up.

I free myself from the closeness of my traveling companions and my mischievous little shit.

It wasn't like we were cuddling or anything, just side by side, shoulder to shoulder.

I crawl my way over to Courtney and sit beside her, glancing over to the girl with a slight frown.

"So." I lowly whisper. "What are you up to."

"I am continuing my studies. I regretfully had allowed them to fall by the wayside. Something that I am rectifying as of this moment."

"I see. Volcanos?"

"More the reason why evolution stones work and why. This, of course, is focused on fire stones, but I felt I could broaden my horizons." The girl supplies.

"I always thought the reason was rather simple..." I mutter as I scratch the side of my head.

Her eyes slide to look at me, now capturing her full attention. "Oh?"

"Pokemon don't need stones to evolve. They need environments." I explain.

The girl blinks, eyes widening. "Then... hypothetically... pokemon that require stones to evolve could evolve on their own in the wild?"

"Yes." I nod once. "It's not as if an Alakazam or Gengar didn't appear before our magical 'trade machines' were created."

The girl cups her chin. "Hn. If environments are the cause... no... not environments... environments cannot be contained in a rock... elemental energy. Pokemon can evolve through excess type energy which is far more common in places like volcanos."

I nod once. "Yep. That's my theory. Just like how Growlithe can evolve in the hearts of volcanos, it's likely that they'd evolve when near something of great power... like a fire type legendary pokemon."

"There is no real way to test that theory." The girl frowns.

"True. But I do know for a fact at least one Growlithe like Surtur managed to evolve on its own regardless of evolution stone. It was in one of our legends, and those are typically about as accurate as Zinnia's foretelling of Grand Meteor Delta."

"I will keep this in mind. Thank you for another perspective for my research."

"It's nothing." I lazily shrug as I tap my watch, expanding it into a holographic screen and keyboard.

I can feel Courtney's eyes on my wrist. "This... thing you are using. I have been meaning to inquire about it."

"Yeah?"

"What is it? Correction. I am aware that it is some form of advanced wrist-mounted computer, yet I have never seen it in stores."

"it's just a little something my father created before he died. I thought it was pretty nifty so I learned how to use it... it's certainly better than any pokedex I've seen."

"Your father... made this?"

"He made a lot of things, to be fair." I joke. "Tech, extinct pokemon, artificial digital pokemon that was supposed to be a dragon type but came out as a literal blob, me. He was quite good at making stuff."

"Extinct... pokemon?"

"A few. Mainly just an ancient Bagon and Koridile... oh and a Larvesta."

"Larvesta?!"

"It was a bug-fighting type." I shake my head. "It can learn fire type moves but it wouldn't fit into your team as a type specialist."

"I... see?" The girl blinks in confusion. "Fighting Type? Strange."

"I honestly have no clue why it is fighting type, to be honest." I mutter as I shrug quietly as I gaze down the hole we had used to climb in here. "Has the blizzard subsided?"

"Yes. It is merely flurries now. Strange. It stopped the second the sun had set."

I close my eyes and take a deep breath, feeling outwards.

"If I was a betting man... I'd say that the swarms of Vanillite aren't creating a blizzard of their own volition."

"Oh?" The girl questions. "Team Plasma?"

"Probably." I nod once. "Perhaps they are establishing a base of operations on this mountain and they are using the heavy blizzard to make sure nobody sees it or walks up upon it. People are unlikely to travel in the dark, after all."

"I take it that is what we must do?" She questions.

"Seems that way. If it starts back up we can have Surtur dig us another hole in the wall. How good are you at stealth takedowns, because the last time I came across Plasma, one of them tried to like... stab me with a knife, sooo I'd rather take them out quickly before their knives can get familiar with my lower intestine, and their pokemon get familiar with my jugular."

"Not many people learn to fight when pokemon are on hand..." She comments.

I stare for a long moment.

"I... am not one of them." She eventually admits.

"Shame. You should probably work on that." I sigh.

"Seeing you knock ghosts out with a simple punch, perhaps I will." The girl frowns.

I nod slowly and begin to tap away at the holographic keyboard that appears above my lap.

A red battery flashes on the screen.

"Ah. Piss." I lowly curse.

"Loki." I whisper.

His ears twitch.

"Loki."

He cracks open an eye as I grab a strange yellow and black device from my bag. It is U shaped, with a metal bar connecting the two forward facing prongs.

I plug it into a port in my watch as Loki lets out a quiet yawn and stands up.

With a flash a black and yellow Jolteon is stood there, it lazily bites the metal and causes sparks of electricity to crackle from its jaws.

I watch the battery symbol rapidly fill up, going from four percent all the way to ten in a matter of seconds.

By thirty, it has been fully charged.

"That's good. Thank you." I whisper.

With a flash, a black Eevee takes the Jolteon's place, he lets out another yawn and walks forwards, curling up on my shins.

In addition to the pokemon world's hammer space technology and incredible healing marvels, technology in general is just... better...

With little Timmy and everyone else having access to 'REGIONAL ELECTRIC RAT'(TM) and with them being a potential common everyday pest, it makes sense that phones, game systems, ovens, and basically everything else would be incredibly resistant to power surges. That allows phones to be charged in mere seconds instead of dozens of minutes. All without risking the data on it.

Pretty damn useful.

I quietly log onto the internet.

"Greetings all, my name is Xander. I am quite new to this website and I would like to thank you all for your hospitality thus far, that being said, allow me to move onto the true topic of why you are here. I won't bore you by waxing and waning on and on. I'll just cut right to the chase. Here. My work. Something that could increase the rate at which trainers fine-tune their pokemon teams.

{S.T.A.B..Doc}

To those who don't have time or want to read through my twenty page essay on the nature of pokemon moves with video attachments, allow me to condense it all down into roughly a sole paragraph, hell, a sentence.

Pokemon moves grow stronger when the pokemon in question shares at type with the move being used.

To shed a bit more light on this. Imagine for a moment that you have two identical Nidoran, for those unaware, it is a poison type pokemon typically found in Kanto. Now, as I was saying, imagine two Nidoran, exactly the same in every way, now, hypothetically, you have managed to create a device to 'steal' the type from one of the two Nidoran. Its type is simply 'null'. No weakness to ground type, no resistance to poison type moves, nothing. You tell the two pokemon to perform a Tackle with each giving the exact same results as they are exact replicas. Nothing has changed. Then, you tell them to use the move 'Poison Point'. With one of the two Nidoran, the one who still has its type, dealing much more damage to your target than the one who you have stolen the type from.

Pokemon who share their type with a move will see roughly a 50% increase in power with said move.

That is all. Thank you for your time."

I scroll down, skipping over most of the older posts on my own.

'let's see here... I last checked at about... twelve-ish yesterday, about an hour before my gym battle.

Actually, judging by the clock, it'd be two days ago. It just rolled over into a new day.

"How did you manage to find a wild Panpour with Ice Punch and a wild Pansear with Fire Punch? Those are pretty rare moves, and I'm pretty sure they don't learn them without a tm?"

I begin to formulate a new post, deciding to quickly look through all the messages and post answers to each within one sole large post instead of artificially inflating the post count.

"Wow! This was quite a blunder on the scientific community! How did they miss something so large for so long? I guess it wasn't really important in the grand scheme of things, but, it seems like something people would notice... though I guess it might have been a bit hard to determine it as it's very easy to assume that some pokemon are just better at moves than others without the cause being something entirely biological."

"FUCK YEAH! This'll make it so much easier to pick and choose which Tms to get my pokemon. I thank you from the bottom of my heart... and from the bottom of my wallet! It's like Sylph Co thinks that we're made of money or something! Regardless of this TREMENDOUS money-saving research, you can't deny the versatility having all the elemental punches gives you though, even if one may be stronger than the others. But for newer trainers just getting into Tms for their pokemon, this should be a great help in deciding which to prioritize. Also... a thought occurs... S.T.A.B. Hyper Beam? I need to get me a beefy normal type ASAP!"

A small smile crosses my face.

"Hello Xander, it has been a while since you left Aspertia and I wanted to know if you could clarify one thing. I've noticed that some of my pokemon don't seem to have a 'Same Type Attack Bonus' when it comes to normal type moves like Takedown and Headbutt. I was wondering if you could shed light on this situation."

Ah. Good ol Cheren. He's caught on quick. I should finish my magnum opus quickly.

My smile is wiped from my face as I continue to the next page.

"You're a fucking HACK! This 'Stab' nonsense is utter bullshit! I went out with my Breloom and tried it, but my Low Kick did absolutely nothing compared to his Ariel Ace. How do you fuckers get away with posting false information like this. Researcher my ASS. I've looked you up, you're barely even 16! Go fuck yourself."

I take a deep breath, then exhale.

"Angry?" The pink haired girl to my right questions.

I turn the screen to her allowing her to read the message.

"…"

"Hn. There are other factors at play, correct?" She hums. "I am not familiar with grass type pokemon, so I wouldn't know if there's other factors in play.

"Yeah, you could say that there are other factors." I nod quietly as I scroll down.

Gardenia (Verified Gym Leader) (Grass-Type Specialist)

" Damian. Bruh. Why the actual FUCK are you teaching your Breloom kicking moves? Breloom's main form of attack are punches. Its legs allow it to move swiftly, yes, but if this movement is hampered, a Breloom's speed will drop and without the stability of having its feet on the ground, the power of its punches will drop. You don't know what you're talking about."

Damian (Verified Trainer)
Posted March 6th, 1381
" Gardenia. KICKBOXING EXISTS. People don't expect my Breloom to be able to kick so it helps us get the drop on people! I don't need to justify my training methods to you!"

Gardenia (Verified Gym Leader) (Grass-Type Specialist)
Posted March 6th, 1381
" Damian. Yes, Kickboxing. For humans. Who have legs longer than their arms. Quite literally the opposite of Breloom as their arms can stretch. You are comparing a move like Ariel Ace, which is typically performed with the arms of bipedal pokemon, to Low Kick. That's like asking why a Machamp prefers punching moves. It couldn't have anything to do with the fact it has four arms, right? Naaah let's make a kick focused Machamp. That many arms just gets in the way!"

Oh. I didn't expect to see another gym leader here.

Neat.

It's incredibly likely that they will agree as they have for the last fifteen. These posts are wildly off topic.

"Hey all! sorry about the brief delay, I spent all day trekking through the wilderness on no sleep, thank you all for your questions, those of which I will be answering as being snowed in, in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, has left me with not much to do!
First and foremost.

Adam Smith. The thing is, I didn't exactly find a wild Panpour/sear with fire punch, I taught them most of the moves they showcased with Tms I bought for... what I am ashamed to say... far too much money. But, when in search of scientific advancement, you've got to be prepared to lose a few poke. Roughly 50,000 in Tms is nothing in the face of proving that I was right! Plus the credentials being right is giving me.

Mary Hughs. It was quite subtle, so I really don't blame anyone for not noticing it before, I merely caught on because I've spent most of my life hanging around quite a few Eevees and after a while I started noticing a few inconsistencies between them as they started to evolve into different forms. Without that, I probably wouldn't have even thought to look into it.

Zagnar The Obliterator Of Worlds.
Theoretically ALL pokemon moves have a 'S.T.A.B.', with status moves being the exception from what I can tell. Of course, this could very well be incorrect, and it is true that all moves have STAB. I myself wasn't able to think of a way to prove if status moves can fit into S.T.A.B. so it remains inconclusive. Yes, Hyper Beam can gain STAB, the only problem is that most normal type pokemon are focused more on physical moves than special moves. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head that would work well for this, would be Drampa. Its unique ability, Berserk, also plays well with this sort of 'strategy', as it improves the damage of special attacks further. If you seek one out, regardless of the fact that they are commonly known to be one of- if not THE most tame dragon types, you should still remember that it IS a dragon type and give it the full respect it deserves.

Damian.
In addition to the points Gardenia here has listed out, Breloom also has the potential to hold the powerful 'Technician' ability which drastically improves the power of weaker moves by roughly the equivalent of S.T.A.B. The thing is, they stack. That ability is why some Bullet Punching Scizor are so dangerous. Aerial Ace, if I remember correctly, is a move that just barely rests on the upper limit of Technician's 'power cap'. Low kick, on the other hand, is technically a stronger move than Aerial Ace, bringing it just slightly out of range of the ability. This in turn makes Ariel Ace enhanced with Technician a FAR superior move than Low kick and would be the equivalent of comparing the move Bite to the move Crunch.
As for your other silly points, yes. I'm young. I am aware. But I seriously doubt a large majority of trainers know pokemon as well as I do. There is a REASON why I have the 'VERIFIED Pokemon Researcher' tag on my name. It's not a title that the moderators toss around willy nilly, typically, to gain this tag I would have to have the approval of at least a sole Pokemon Professor. And I'm talking real big shots here. THE pokemon professors. Like Oak, Rowan, and Juniper. That being said, people are ALSO given this tag when several of the teachers at the illustrious Uva Academy approve of my work. My posts can be freely removed at any time by the moderators and the teachers of Uva Academy if they find that through their own experimentation I am wrong... but no, you, a guy who hasn't even officially qualified for a Pokémon League Conference due to his 'WhAcKy TrAiNiNg MeThOdS' in his 5 years of being a pokemon trainer, knows better than people who spent literal decades getting doctorates to teach numerous courses. You go dude. You are the most well-learned man in all of everything. The second coming of Professor Oak, you are.

Cheren.
Ah yes, pokemon who lack STAB. Your Dachsbun was one of them, right? Perhaps a Togepi or one of its evolutions? That makes sense. I have a vague idea of why this might be happening, and it ties into one of my next research projects I started after seeing your Dachsbun fight my traveling companion's pokemon. To talk more on it, and to give those who lurk here a taste of what I have in store... are you sure that your Dachsbun and Togepi is a Normal Type pokemon?"

After reading over it one more time, I crack my fingers and let out a quiet yawn as I hit send.

I need to start collecting data.

My eyes stray to the girl sat beside me.

I'd also like to get her on my side...

But I don't really know how to tackle her crippling obsession over Maxxie.

I mean, I could always throw money at it and have the system re-write minor parts of her personality.

How much money do I have?

All I really need to do is make her 'realize' that Maxxie doesn't love her, which is true, then she can obsess on something else...

Hopefully me.

I check my balance.

Roughly eight hundred thousand.

That's totally enough.

I mean, I re-wrote the memories of everyone back at the cave for roughly this amount.

'Let's see here- what the fuck?'

How much?!

To do as much as I did with even a single one of my pokemon... I'd need upwards of fifty million.

I guess she is a 'canon character'… plus I didn't literally create her.

So... this will be the general cost to manipulate characters.

I guess the system is telling me 'yeah, we can do it, but it'll be far more cost effective if you manipulate them yourself.'

The thing is, I don't really need the system to re-write her every waking moment into being nothing more than a subservient minion.

All I need... is one little aspect changed.

A realization placed in her head.

One that she appears to be slowly acknowledging while constantly deluding herself into believing that her suspicions aren't correct.

Ah.

Easy.

A mere half a million.

Small price to pay for an attractive, loyal, and morally agreeable girl who shares my interests as a researcher.

Every villain needs their perky female partner.

Harley Quinn to Joker, the Bonnie to Clyde, Neo Politan to Roman Torchwick.

Besiiiides, this isn't mind alteration.

This is merely speeding up a revelation she is going to have at some point.

Speeding it up to a point where I can freely use it over the course of our journey instead of it being a thing that happens a good eight or so months in the future that we have to deal with as she angrily lashes out at everything.

Her lashing out right now would be decisively less disastrous as only a few of her pokemon are actually evolved.

Meh.

I'll make sure to do it the next time she goes to sleep.

Out of curiosity... how much would mentally dominating Cynthia cost?

I blink at the number that appears on the screen before me.

Oh.

Oh shit.

That's a lot.

Far more than Courtney.

But I guess Cynthia isn't really a 'side character' and holds a lot of influence on the Sinnoh region.

Damn.

I look back to my screen, deciding to go check on my other posts.

I should like... get a personal Porygon to forward me important questions and shit.

'let's see here... the Zorua post is sitting at around... one hundred and thirty pages of replies after a mere day and a half, people really eat up the things in the 'NEW POKEMON' tab.'

'I want to buy' 'where can I get one' 'holy shit it's fucking adorable' 'what does it eat'.

There's a lot of questions-

I blink as I get a private message.

I have it set so only certain verified users can send me those. Primarily Gym Leaders, Researchers, Champions, that sort of thing.

"Hello Xander, I was hoping that you have some time for a quick word."

What the fuck does the champion of Hoenn want with me?

Xander Welsh (Verified Pokemon Researcher)
Posted March 7th, 1381
"Yes? What do you need, sir?"

Steven Stone (Verified Champion of Hoenn)
Posted March 7th, 1381
"Please, call me Steven. Recently I had discovered something and I was wondering if you were aware of it, this hold no real relation to pokemon, sorry to disappoint, but it might hold some interest to you regardless. Tell me, do you have some form of communication device, I believe it might be better to do this over voice."

I stare down at his message for a long moment, then let out a quiet sigh, shifting Loki off my legs as he lets out a quiet cry in protest. "I'll be right back, I just need to make a call... apparently..."

"With who?" The girl beside me blinks.

"Oh, just the champion of Hoenn, Steven Stone." I explain.

"Why?" She questions.

"No clue, but he said he found out something that might interest me. Honestly, I had no idea I was even on speaking terms with any champion besides the history pervert." I reply as I begin to crawl out, sending the message I typed out.

Xander Welsh (Verified Pokemon Researcher)
Posted March 7th, 1381
"Sure. Here's my number XXX-XXX-XXXX"

I crawl up out of a foot of snow that had almost covered the entrance to our little shelter and stand up, stretching my arms above my head as a holographic screen appears in front of me.

A moment later a man in a black suit appears in on the screen, he has light blue eyes and steel-blue hair, attached to his chest is a small lapel pin with a fairly special multicolored gemstone within it.

A keystone.

Used to mega evolve his shiny Metagross.

Ah. Right. Speaking of stones, I have that cool rock I found at Virbank I need to read up on.

"Ah, Mr. Welsh, it's good to see you." The man smiles kindly.

"It is good to meet you as well." I reply slowly and slightly cautiously. "So. What is this about?"

"Well, you see... I've recently been told that, well... we're related." He sheepishly begins.

"…"

"Pardon" I whisper.

"We're cousins. Our fathers were brothers." He explains.

"Fuck!"

Pov: Elsewhere.

"Progress report." A old, white haired man in a large, definitely oversized, wintery coat frowns to a man in black with a beret that has an X on the front.

"Sir Zinzolin, we have begun the initial preparations of our forward operating base and have begun to search through the mountainous caverns for the legendary pokemon Kyurem." The grunt supplies.

"Good." 'Zinzolin' nods. "Continue searching and construction. If Kyurem is not in this area, it should serve well as a base for the continued operations of Plasma."

"Have we received any further orders, sir?" The man asks.

"No, we haven't. Not yet. The plot in Virbank was a major setback." The leader sighs.

With Virbank standing, it is far more likely for a curious trainer to wander their way into the mountains to make their way to Driftveil. As a result, they have had to rely on their backup plan which was not entirely fleshed out.

"Tell me, Francis. How are the Vanilluxe?"

"The controlled Vanilluxe and other ice type pokemon are... tired... conjuring a blizzard of that scale has rendered them quite low on energy." Francis supplies, retaining his stiff posture.

"Tch." The man growls. "Damn. What is the estimated time that they will regain their strength?"

"At least, a few days, at most, a week."

"Damn it." Zinzolin curses as he cups his chin before letting out a long sigh. "Well, that should be enough, I suppose. The first day was the most important, we won't need a blizzard of that scale again as long as we keep it chilled and topped up with a few gentle flurries now and then. The snow itself will pose quite the issue to anyone traveling, so much so they might just decide to turn back on seeing it."

"Do we have the resources to sustain more ice type pokemon?" The elderly man questions

"Our water type pokemon are already reaching their limits by giving the Vanilluxe enough moisture in this temperature. We could possibly capture more if we had even a couple more water types, but as is we are currently at our limit. As for other ice type pokemon, we wouldn't have enough food to keep them fed for long. One of my men did say that they saw a Froslass, though."

"I see... could our devices withstand more in the first place?" He asks his grunt.

"We believe so, sir." The black-ops-esque-dressed man nods.

"Hrn. Very well. Continue construction as ordered. I will send a request to the detachment in Driftveil to gather water type pokemon for our needs... also to temporarily delay their plan as it could hinder the creation of our compound. Capture any Froslass you see and place them under the control of our domination devices. You are dismissed."

The man salutes and walks out of the room as the elder quietly sips a cup of tea which had been left on his desk.

The only building that they have completed so far, his personal quarters.

"Nero." He calls out suddenly.

With a puff of smoke, a man with long, messy white hair stands behind him, he has the lower half of his face covered with cloth, a black bandana around his forehead, numerous weapons hang off his hip and in numerous pouches.

One of the Shadow Triad.

Ordered by Ghetsis to assist him in the search for the legendary pokemon Kyurem.

The shadow triad are no mere mook or grunt.

They are assassins.

Dangerous ones.

With strength far surpassing normal men, with ninja-like techniques to disappear and reappear at will, almost like teleportation, and numerous powerful pokemon to assist them.

"Could you quickly go to Driftveil and convey my worries?" Zinzolin quietly asks.

The man, looming just behind him says nothing, but as the leader turns his head to glance back, he sees the ninja-like man nod once and disappear.

Let's hope the Kyurem is in this mountain and not elsewhere. He doubts that most of the other 'leaders' of this group could handle a threat such as it.

Well, except Ghetsis, of course.

Well, Xander is quite the special little guy!

Wanted for his historical knowledge by one champion, related to a second, what's next? Will be be fucking a third champion or something?

Naaaah. Probably not.

A primarily PHO inspired chapter. If the formatting doesn't work, sorry, it's my first time doing this and I have no idea what works and what doesn't.
