Adrian didn't try to contact me again after that night, which was a relief. It allowed me to attempt to continue my life as if Palm Springs never happened. I was aware that it wasn't the healthiest way to try to move forward, but it seemed like the most manageable option.
Today marked 2 months since I arrived in Sioux Falls, and I was now feeling comfortably acclimated. I had gotten the keys to my apartment- Ian's old apartment- the day he left for St. Louis. I also received the keys to his car, which was an almost brand new sedan. The most exciting thing about the car was that it was red, but at least it was fuel efficient.
The job itself was even easier than Ian had made it seem, and I found myself with an uncomfortable amount of free time. I was also bored most of the day. I was contemplating asking Stanton if there was anything else I could work on while I was stationed here.
Just before dinner I received an unexpected call from my father.
"Sydney," he said as soon as I answered the call. "I trust that everything is going well in South Dakota." He continued without allowing me to respond. "You'll be getting on a flight tomorrow afternoon, for the Moroi court."
My heart skipped a beat. "What for, sir?"
"They've requested alchemist help regarding the experiments they started in Palm Springs, and you're the only field alchemist with the appropriate clearance."
I tried to sound as calm as possible. "Who would I be working with?"
"It will be a subset of the Palm Spring team, and another spirit user."
The Palm Springs team? Does that mean that there's a chance that Adrian could be there? No, maybe it will just be Sonya and Dimitri. That would make more sense⦠I think.
"We've told them they can have you for a maximum of 3 days, so ensure to get everything done within those 3 days. We have an efficient reputation to uphold." Again, he continued without waiting for any sort of response from me. "Your post will be covered by the North side alchemist while you are out of state. Any questions?"
"No, sir."
"Good luck." Was all he said before hanging up.
I took a deep breath. I have less than 24 hours to prepare myself mentally for whatever was waiting for me at court.
