Chapter 12: Sparks
Solitas, a cold and dreary continent in the northernmost parts of the world. There was nothing but tundra out as far as the eye could see. The roads were hard to traverse, requiring vehicles made just for crossing through ice and snow. The wildlife that managed to survive hid away in burrows, hunting by day and sleeping by night, to avoid being out in the cold. Nowhere else in the world was it so cold. And deep in the tundra, floated the future of Remnant's communication. Amity Tower.
A lone armored supply truck was making its way toward the designated location, far away from the Kingdom of Atlas, where people would pry and ask questions. It was in this armored truck that Ruby Rose currently sat, bored out of her mind. She hadn't been expecting the trip to be a straight shot, just nothing but white snow as far as she could see. She crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat as she looked up at the ceiling of the cab.
"Not that this isn't boring or anything but… why couldn't we use an airship to take these supplies to Amity?" she questioned, glancing to her left. Penny was sitting beside her, the smile on her face drooping slightly.
"The components for Amity Tower's construction are far too heavy. All that weight would require precious amounts of Dust. Dust that we should be saving for the launch itself, and the Grimm that will come after." she replied, making the brown-haired girl sigh.
"I suppose you make a good point. I just wasn't expecting for it to be a long… long, very long, supply run," she said, sighing. "Could be worse though, compared to our last mission, I take calm boring car rides any day,"
"Mhmm, you bring up a good point, Ruby. At least it's scenic!"
Ruby peered out the window, seeing a lone penguin in the distance. She rolled her eyes, leaning back in her seat. "Right, scenic. Anyway, I've been meaning to ask you about our mission. Weiss and Levi were taken off their investigation after what we found. I just wanted to know, are you okay? That lady did a number on you."
"I'm alright. My aura took a while to return, but with the proper care and rest, I am back in tip-top shape. My father was concerned, but why wouldn't he be? I am his only daughter." she said, closing her eyes. "Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I had a sibling, would he still care about me as much as he does now?"
"What? Of course, he would! Just because he has two daughters doesn't mean he loves one more than the other!" Ruby exclaimed, making Penny look at her. "Take me and Yang, sure we have different moms, but our dad still loves us equally. I did notice him being a bit harder on Yang than me but well… she's Yang."
"Yes… Yang is undoubtedly Yang. I fear what would happen if someone crossed her path on a bad day."
"It wouldn't be too pretty. The last guy that did that isn't around to tell the tale… though that might be beneficial for all of us." Ruby said, glancing out the window. "That guy was… bad news."
Penny frowned, glancing at her hands for a moment. She wanted to know what Ruby was thinking about, but she could tell it would bring up bad memories. Instead, she decided to change the subject, not wanting to annoy her friend. "Before I forget, I wanted to say it's nice working with you in a professional manner. As friends!"
The cloaked girl laughed, brushing her hair out of her eyes. "Me too, Penny. I'm just… happy to know you are still here."
"Indeed! It's so interesting to see all of you, and how much you have changed. Even people that I didn't know in the past, like Levi, Oscar, and Alto! They seem like really kind people, though I can tell they've been through quite a lot."
Ruby nodded. "They have… Oscar was with us when we defended Haven Academy. He fought his hardest against Headmaster Lionheart. I still can't believe he turned on Ozpin and went to Salem's side… and Levi? He's had it the worst out of all of us. Lost his mother, his teammates, the only one still alive was gravely injured, and he sought revenge because he thought that'd bring him peace. And at the end of it all, he gave his own limbs to save Weiss from that bastard Adam Taurus. He's the very definition of a Huntsman."
"I see… I didn't expect for someone like that to have experienced so much pain and loss."
"That's what we have to deal with when we sign up for this kind of job. It's a mistake I made when I was in Beacon. I still want to be a hero that saves the people, but being a Huntress? It isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows… just like everything isn't a fairytale." she replied, bowing her head slightly.
"At the very least, I'm happy to be working with you! Relationships are so interesting and varied!"
"Speaking of friends… have you been able to make any new ones? You know, since…?"
Penny shook her head, tilting her head slightly. "Now that I am the official protector of Mantle, I don't really have a team anymore. General Ironwood says I don't have time for friends."
Ruby blinked a few times, her frown returning. "Oh… and how do you feel about that?"
"I feel like… Like I wish I could do the things I need to do and the things I want to do," she replied, looking at her friend, a perplexed look on her face. "Is that normal?"
"That's as normal as it gets, Penny," Ruby chuckled. The pair heard a knock from behind them, causing them to jump slightly.
"Everything alright up there?"
"Yep! Everything's fine, Uncle Qrow. We're all clear and there's no one in sight!" Ruby cheerfully replied. She held a thumbs up, easing the man's worries. He turned back to the card game he had been playing, staring at the hand he had been dealt, his frown returning. Clover set his hand down in front of him, holding back a laugh.
"Looks like I win again," he said, making Qrow scoff.
"Just shut up and deal," the man said, throwing the cards down. Clover swiftly gathered them up, shuffling the deck with ease. He started dealing them back out, briefly glancing to the front of the truck.
"That niece of yours sure is one of a kind. Don't think I've ever seen someone put down so many chocolate chip cookies without choking,"
"All of em are, not just my nieces. Those kids… they've been through a lot together," Qrow said, leaning back against a supply crate. "I don't think I've seen a more tight-knit group than them. The way they operate, cover each other's weaknesses, make sure they're alright mid-battle while still returning fire… it's amazing. They've come a long way,"
"Good thing they had someone to look up to and get them through it. Not everyone is so lucky," Clover said, making Qrow frown.
"I dunno about all of that. Thanks by the way, for looking out for'em. You and your team. They've been helping them train, adjust and get through things. Not everyone has the chance that they have right now."
Clover shook his head, pausing for a quick drink from his flask, setting it down beside him. "What good is saving the world without another generation waiting in the wings? Hopefully, they'll leave Remnant better than we left it for them."
"Once upon a time, I'd have drank to that," the man said. Clover offered his flask, but he shook his head. "Nah, I'm all set… I kinda quit."
"You know something… you shouldn't do that. Deflect a compliment I mean. Those kids wouldn't be where they are without you. You've had more of an effect on them than you realize." he said. Qrow looked away, a ghost of a smile on his lips. He was about to speak when he felt the truck slow to a stop. Almost instantly, his hand went to Harbinger.
"Hey uh, Uncle Qrow, Clover? We got a situation." Ruby said. Both men shared a look, erupting from the back of the truck, weapons at the ready.
"What's up? Grimm?"
"No. Worse. The only thing we have to deal with out here are ambushes. They've gone up recently, people assaulting supply trucks and stealing our shit. It's gotten worse in Mantle overall, though thanks to Miss Blaze and Miss Brunswick, one less group is out there doing it." he said, looking around. "Qrow, you and Ruby are on me, Penny you watch our six. We may need the element of surprise."
"Affirmative! I shall plan for six different outcomes!" she said, giving them a thumbs up. Clover rolled his eyes, gesturing for them to start walking.
Ruby nodded, holding Crescent Rose tightly in her grasp. She scanned the area, taking notice of the blockade. It looked simple, made out of thin steel sheets, wooden boards, and concertina wire. They could have easily driven through it, but they didn't know if there were spikes beyond the wall or not.
Down from above, two figures dropped down, taking Ruby and Qrow by surprise. Clover didn't seem phased, a faux grin plastered on his face. "Well, if it isn't Robyn Hill, Mantle's Hometown Hero. Is there a reason why you're blocking an official transport?"
"I wasn't expecting you up here, Clover. Maybe you can help me understand why this truck that's supposed to be taking construction materials to Mantle's outer wall, is out here in the tundra. Are you lost?"
"Can't say we are, though it is pretty easy to get turned around here in the tundra. Everything looks the same. Thanks for checking up on us though, we'll be on our way now." he said, gesturing for Qrow and Ruby to follow him.
"Here I was hoping you'd play it straight with me. What's Ironwood doing with Amity and the old Schnee Mine?"
"Oh, that?" Clover replied, glancing over his shoulder at the woman. "The Arena is getting her annual checkup. Nothing out of the ordinary."
"Nothing out of the ordinary," she muttered, nodding at the man. "The next Vytal Festival isn't anytime soon. Only automated drones and a few select Atlas scientists have been allowed up there. Not only that but Amity's getting a lot of invaluable resources. Resources that Mantle needs to fix up the damaged walls! Seems more to me than just some checkup."
"You know if you need supplies, then why not seek them through other means? We already know you are buying stolen materials from the 5th Street Cobras. What? Did all of those materials already get wasted?"
Robyn glared at the man, looking away from him. "As it turns out, we stopped dealing with those men. A certain Kitty convinced us that what we were doing wasn't correct. That money was being funneled into Ivy Brown's campaign. You should be investigating her, you know? All of those murders down in Mantle point right toward her."
"Funny you should mention that, we have a team already on that," he said, rolling his shoulders a bit. "Also nice to know you've been scoping the place out."
Robyn stepped forward, a firm look on her face. "Look, we can't fix that wall without the supplies in these trucks. I think Mantle deserves to know what they're being used for. It doesn't have to be difficult, just tell me."
Clover looked at her outstretched hand, scoffing before shaking his head. "I'll have to pass on that."
The woman's smile dropped, her gaze shifting toward Ruby and Qrow, who had their weapons at the ready. Ruby had her gaze on the faunus girl beside her, who had been glaring at her equally as hard. "What about you, Pipsqueak? Five O'clock Shadow. Got anything to say about this? Why is Ironwood putting Mantle at risk over his pet project?"
"We're trying to help Mantle. We need-"
"That's enough, Robyn." Clover cut in, bringing the woman's attention back to him. "As a potential Councilwoman, you should probably focus on the election instead of harassing Huntsmen. Now it's time to let us pass."
"I think you've misjudged the situation here. One way or another, those supplies are going to get where they're supposed to go. Mantle."
"Then I suggest you do that through the proper legal channels as a councilwoman. If you get elected that is. Be glad Ironwood doesn't report your dealings with criminals to the council. He believes everyone should have a fair chance at those seats." he said firmly. Despite that, he held his weapon at the ready, just in case. Ruby and Qrow tensed up as well, prepared to fight.
"The proper legal channels? Oh, come on, Clover. Where's the fun in that?"
Before anyone could move, Penny burst from inside of the truck, floating in front of them. She had her Floating Array at the ready, glaring at the woman before them. "Robyn Hill. I would like for you to comply with our orders. Call off the Huntresses approaching the rear of the truck."
Qrow gave Ruby a nod, the pair of them moving behind the truck, only to spot nothing. Robyn let out a dry laugh, sighing. "Alright, you win. Joanna, May!"
Two more women appeared from behind the truck, walking past the Huntsmen toward their friend. Penny narrowed her eyes slightly as she got a good look at them. She memorized their faces, ensuring their identities would be written in her memory banks, just in case. Robyn looked up at the cybernetic girl, a hand at her hip.
"The Protector of Mantle, huh?"
She gestured to her friends to move the barrier. Clover remained tense, still holding his weapon in his grasp as he moved back toward the truck. He paused, glancing over his shoulder, giving the woman a grin. "Oh and Robyn? Good luck at the election."
Everyone got into the truck, and without missing a beat, continued driving down the worn path. Ruby let out a sigh, resting Crescent Rose on her lap.
"That was a close one," Qrow said, causing Clover to sigh.
"You're telling me."
Location: Mantle
"So the Erune race is the complete opposite to the Miqo'tes?" Levi asked, earning a nod from Metera, who had a bright smile on her face.
"That's right, while you Miqo'tes have the ability to make magic out of Dust, us Erunes are different. Most of us have more defensive bloodlines coursing through us. Back when the Kingdom of Eorzea was still around, Erunes were highly respected medics and synergists. Their healing magic was second to none. Powerful Kings often appointed Erunes as their Retainers while Miqo'tes were Grand Wizards." she said, her ears folding down slightly. "That was in the past, now our races have dwindled. I don't know how many of my brethren are out there. All I know is that my sister, Ferry, is the only other Erune in Solitas."
"I'm so sorry to hear that. I know the feeling, aside from my own mother, I've never met another Miqo'te. Our race was hunted down like sport, destroyed by people who wanted us dead. It's… a sobering thought, knowing I might be the last one of my own race."
"Hey, take pride in the fact that you are potentially the last male Miqo'te." Neo's scroll chirped, causing the pair to look at her. She gave him a grin, lips curved up in a saucy smile. "You are of healthy breeding age, meaning you can spread your seed all over Remnant."
Metera burst into laughter, clutching her sides tightly while Levi glared at his partner. "Oh, that's a good one. You'd have to have a lot of sex for that to happen though, lucky you~"
"Har har, laugh it up you perverts." he snapped, crossing his arms. "Get real, as if I could 'spread my seed' all over Remnant. Any Miqo'te that is born in our current world is just setting themselves up for a life of suffering. That's something I don't want to put on anyone,"
"What… does that mean? Wouldn't you want to have children?"
"It's a complicated issue, super classified. We can't really think about the future for the time being. Things are… rough." Neo said, making Metera sigh.
"I see. Guess we might be in the same boat then. The Erunes were hunted down like the Miqo'tes were. I've thought a lot about my own future, and if I want to have kids. I know Valentine would love to hear the little pitter-patter of feet in our apartment. But I don't think I could have a kid knowing they'd likely end up like our ancestors."
"A bitter pill to swallow, I'm afraid," Levi said, glancing up at the sky. The clouds rumbled, alerting them that another rainstorm was passing by. He was glad for the heating grates spread across the city, he was growing tired of all the snow.
They turned the corner, coming to a stop when they saw a large crowd of people before them. Both Humans and Faunus were intermingled, holding signs with Ironwood's face, painted over with crimson red X's. Several AK-200s had been deployed, their firearms trained on the crowd. The Mantle Police Department had also been nearby, blowing their whistles and telling the crowd to step back via their megaphones. Levi's ears drooped a bit, his tail becoming still as he stared at the crowd.
"200 years of racial inequality and the one thing that brings humans and faunus together are evil politicians. What are the odds of that?"
"It lets us know where we fit in the grand scheme of things, darling," Metera replied, peering over the crowd. "I see TV cameras though… this might be-"
"Look!"
They both turned to Neo, who was pointing toward the other end of the street. A fancy black car had pulled up to the edge of the crowd. Several camera flashes filled their view, blocking the person who had gotten out of the car. Levi looked around for a moment, spotting a nearby fire escape. He climbed up on the ladder, getting a better view.
A beautiful brown-haired woman was making her way to the front. She said something to one of the police officers, who blew their whistle loudly. "Get Back! Give Miss Brown some space!"
The silver-haired man jumped back down onto the street, walking over to Metera and Neo. "It's Ivy Brown, I guess this is where she's holding her rally."
"Makes sense. It would definitely be better to go where the protesters are, there's already a gathered crowd. Less time for people to gather." Metera said, holding her scroll above the crowd. "I'm gonna record this, just in case."
The second the woman stepped up to the makeshift podium, she gave the crowd a wave. All of them started chanting "Ivy" over and over again. Hundreds of photographs were taken, a sea of camera flashes and shutter clicks coming from the vast ocean of people. Ivy held her hand up, the crowd instantly quieting down.
"Citizens of Mantle, Humans, and Faunus alike, I am so happy to stand here before you. Our fairy city, nay, the entirety of our Kingdom, is dangling by a thread. With each passing day, our companies lose millions. With each passing day, we are reminded of the tyranny of General James Ironwood, with each passing day, we are forced to deal with the threat of Grimm. Gangs are running amok in our streets, while the Atlas Military does nothing. Even now, construction supplies meant to fix our walls are being shipped out to the tundra.
Just what is Ironwood hiding from us? Why doesn't he tell us why these things are being sent out to Amity Colosseum?
But why would he? He has all but abandoned us. The people who helped Atlas get constructed, the very people who saw it float up into the heavens. So why is it now that we… the people of Mantle aren't being afforded the rights that we deserve? My own family was responsible for providing the iron that built Atlas's underside. Why must I wake up every morning and stare at Brown Ironworks Iron on Atlas's Ass end and not be afforded the same privileges that the people of Atlas are? Why must we live in poverty, watch our children die of sickness and our people scrounge from trash cans, while the elites of Atlas eat Foie Gras on silver platters?
No longer! As Councilwoman, I vow to bring you, the people of Mantle, the rights you deserve. I will provide you with medical coverage, government aid as well as the right to food and water. No longer shall our children starve, and no longer shall we not be afforded the wages we earned by right.
Not only that, but I shall end this damned embargo! I will open our borders and remind the world that the Kingdom of Atlas did not abandon them. The People of Mantle are but one piece of the puzzle, the most important piece! We built Atlas, that means it by right belongs to us! Join me in our new future! Vote for me, and I will make sure every man, woman, and child, yes even the faunus, get the rights they deserve. The elderly will have stability, children will get the proper education, and finally, the Grimm will be eradicated! We must join hands and send this message to the corrupt Council Members in Atlas, to the Corrupt General Ironwood and his lackeys! Do not trust the Atlas Military, they don't give a shit about you!"
The crowd exploded, cheering loudly and calling Ivy's name. Levi shared a look with Metera and Neo, both of whom didn't know what to say or what to think. He opened his mouth to say something, but quickly quashed that idea. By now, people were asking Ivy questions, but he had tuned the woman out. Knowing what he did about her, all he could see was nothing but another tyrant, an opportunist who just wanted money.
"I don't know what I thought I would find here," Levi said.
"If we didn't know what we do, those thinly veiled lies might sound like sweet little nothings in our ears at night," Metera said, shaking her head in disappointment.
"Should we go?" Neo signed, the chanting of the crowd being too loud for her scroll. Levi pondered this, his eyes falling on a man, who was sitting down against a building. He looked like he had seen better days. An idea formulated in his mind.
He moved toward the man, kneeling down beside him. He looked at him, growling a bit when he saw his ears. "The fuck do ya want, ya animal?"
"You wanna make a quick buck?"
He perked up a bit. "Sure, s'long as I can buy some booze."
Levi reached into his pocket for his wallet, pulling out a thousand Lien. He also grabbed a piece of paper from a notepad he kept with him, jotting something down on it. He tore it out, handing both to the man. "I want you to ask Ivy Brown those questions, I want to gauge her reactions."
The man looked at the paper, narrowing his eyes a bit as he read the words. He shrugged, kissing the Lien he had been given. "Haha… you animals ain't half bad, especially if ya give me money,"
He stood up, stumbling a bit before moving through the crowd. Metera and Neo watched Levi curiously, wondering what it was he was planning. The voices died down as Ivy finished answering a question, holding her hand out again.
"Does anyone have another question? I can only answer a few others, my schedule is quite packed."
"Down'ere!" the drunken man said, causing the woman to look at him. She visibly blanched at his appearance, but plastered a smile on her face nonetheless.
"Yes, sir. How may I help you?"
"How do you feel about several of your supporters being murdered?" he questioned. The protesters' voices died down a bit, murmurs spreading through the crowd. Ivy looked around for a moment, forcing a smile onto her face.
"A great question! It is a shame to hear that so many of my supporters are being attacked. It has pained me to hear of their demise in the news. Especially learning the graphic details of how they were murdered. Rest assured, I will do my best to ensure the swift capture of the one responsible. Starting at the top of the food chain with General Ironwood, I am more than certain those supporters of mine are being killed because they dislike him and support me."
The people once again began chanting her name. The homeless man told them to shut up, rather rudely at that. He cleared his throat, staring at the paper in his hand before looking back up at the woman. "The reason I ask is that there are rumors about you being involved in some sort of money laundering scheme. It is thought that those supporters were a part of it. I was just curious to learn about your opinion and if these rumors are affecting your campaign."
Ivy visibly paled, being taken aback by the man's statement. But she quickly recovered, letting out a laugh as she addressed the crowd. "Money laundering? Hah… What more can they accuse me of? That is what they want, our enemies want to blame me and my supporters for things we did not do. I assure you, I am as clean as they come. I wouldn't stake my family name on that if I didn't believe it. Don't give yourselves to rumors, they are meant to sow discord and tear us all apart. No further questions, I have a great many things to do. Just remember, when those polls open, vote for your stability and the future of Atlas, vote for liberty!"
Several people asked questions, while more pictures were snapped of her. Ivy didn't stop, ushered into her vehicle. Levi watched her go, swiveling on his foot. He placed his hands in his pockets as he walked, Neo and Metera joining him not long after.
"What was that about?" Metera queried, causing the young man to shrug.
"I just wanted to put her on the spot. Of course, I knew that if I asked it, she'd likely ignore me. She was only taking questions from humans, not faunus."
"You ruffled her feathers, that's for sure. Did you see how pale she went? It's likely she wasn't expecting that. Perhaps Alto's sneeze made her paranoid."
"Alto's sneeze?" the miqo'te asked, only for Neo to wink. She stopped mid-stride, staring at her scroll. Her peppy smile dropped, as she held the device out to Levi.
"Where are you? You'd best not double-cross me, you silent imp. If you know what is good for you, you'll not keep me waiting."-Cinder
He looked back at his partner who looked heartbroken. He placed a hand on her shoulder, giving her a smile. "It'll be alright, you know?"
She nodded, hugging the man tightly. He stumbled a bit, sighing as he hugged her back. The pair separated, and he gave her a pat on the head, readjusting her hat. "Keep to the plan, you know the one."
She let out a deep breath she'd been holding, bowing her head. She gave Levi a wink shortly before shattering, leaving nothing behind. Metera blinked in confusion, taken completely aback by what she had seen.
"What the… where'd she go?"
"Classified."
"Muu… come on, you have to at least tell me."
"I can't, I'd get my ass turned to dust if I did. Sorry, Teri but you'll have to swallow your curiosity," the miqo'te said, continuing down the sidewalk.
She crossed her arms, walking behind him with a look of annoyance on her face. "I was gonna introduce you to my sister, you know."
Levi decided to ignore her, there was too much on his mind for him to fall to her antics.
Location: Atlas Academy Training Room
The Armor Gigas was locked in battle, swinging its massive sword at the much more agile Beowulf. The white glowing Grimm raced across the large Armor's blade aiming a slash at its throat. The Armor moved away just in time, swinging its blade down hard on the Beowulf, who somehow managed to catch the blade. It redirected the sword, leaping upward once more, decapitating the armor with a single swipe. At the last moment, before the armor fully faded, it managed to stab the Beowulf through with its sword, causing both constructs to disappear.
Weiss let out a sigh, her hand shaking a bit as she looked at her sister. She had a mixture of pride and disappointment written on her face. She had already braced herself for whatever she was bound to say. "Your technique still has those maddening sloppy touches. But you've learned how to make them work for you. You've made them your own."
The former heiress was genuinely surprised. She gave her sister a smile, sheathing her weapon at her hip. "Wow, that was very close to being a compliment."
"I didn't intend it that way," Winter quipped, causing the young woman to deflate.
"We all make mistakes, I guess."
Her sister laughed, shaking her head. "You've grown up a bit, haven't you? You're not that little girl clinging to the family name anymore."
"I didn't really have a choice. Since Beacon, my views have changed. Father's view of the world no longer matches with mine." she replied, looking away from her sister. "I've had good friends knock some sense into me, change my attitude toward things. I've learned to be compassionate and understanding to those who didn't have it as good as we did."
"Whatever the case may be, I am glad to see you've moved on. Distancing myself from the Schnee name is the most beneficial thing I've ever done. We can move forward without him, together," Winter said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I know General Ironwood would have a place for you."
"I'm certain he would, and while I would be grateful to him if he did… I'm not sure if I could accept." she returned, turning away from her sister. She took a deep breath, glancing up at the ceiling for a brief moment. "It's just… Our Kingdom isn't supposed to be like this. Fearful… Withdrawn. We should be opening our borders to help the world, not closing them down. And I know the risks, I know what's coming but…"
"You don't have to worry. One day we will open the borders, we will! Once we've weathered the storm, we will. I know the General hasn't done everything perfectly, but he's doing what he thinks is right."
"Everybody thinks they're right." Weiss snapped, clenching her hand tightly. "But usually, they're just looking out for themselves and their secrets."
The older Schnee walked around to face her sister, a firm look on her face. "The General isn't hiding things from me."
"How can you be so sure?" Weiss challenged, crossing her arms. Winter gave her a nod, gesturing for her to follow her.
"Come on, there's something I have to show you."
xxx
Weiss walked nervously, beside her sister, trying not to make eye contact with the soldiers that were stationed around them. The corridor they were walking down felt cold, despite the fact the heat was stable. It was bright, so bright that the light was beginning to bother her eyes. They arrived at the end of the hallway, being greeted by a black steel door. Winter reached for her pocket, pulling out an ID card which she swiped on the scanner, inputting a code. She opened the door, gesturing for her sister to step inside.
The room was dark, the only light coming from the room below. There was a large observation window, which looked down at a patient room. It was completely sterile, with two large pods along with paint and art supplies. Her eyes drifted toward the bed, where she noticed an elderly woman with white hair laying on the bed. She heard the door open, her gaze shifting toward it, noticing the person that had stepped inside the room was none other than her sister.
"Good afternoon, feeling better today?"
The woman's face lit up, a heartwarming smile on her face. "Good morning!"
Winter looked indifferent, smiling at the woman regardless of her mistake. "Would you like some tea?"
"Of course, I love hot tea on a cold day. It reminds me of home," the woman said cheerfully. Winter poured the woman a cup, placing it on her bedside table. She sat down on the chair across from her, holding her own cup. "How has your day been?"
"I've been spending time with my little sister. I've told you about her before, she's a few years younger than me. She's grown up a lot since I last saw her."
"Ah yes, little Weiss, you have told me about her. I'm so happy to hear you two are getting along," she said, clasping her hands together. "I would love to meet her someday,"
"Of course, I'm sure the two of you would get along just fine."
"Hm.. is it cold outside? It's been so long since I've been outside."
"Yes, it's quite cold, even if it is early April."
The conversation went on for a while, Weiss watching on in silence. It didn't take her too long to figure out who the woman was. She remembered the conversation they had with Ironwood the first day they had arrived in Atlas. The Winter Maiden was being kept in a secure location, only a few people had access to her. She had also heard about all of her doctors being male and not having any female doctors or nurses nearby. It didn't settle into her mind why that was until just now.
The door beside her opened, causing her to jump a bit, being pulled out of her thoughts. Winter stood beside her, peering down at the elderly woman, who was receiving a checkup from a doctor. For a moment, neither said anything, before Weiss finally felt the courage to speak.
"That's the Winter Maiden, isn't it?"
"She is. Her name is Fria… she's been diagnosed with dementia, it's late stage. She could pass any day now. Until that happens, I'm the only person, aside from the doctors, who she's allowed to see."
"He chose you to be the next Winter Maiden, hasn't he? When she dies… how long have you known?" Weiss asked. Her sister stood firmly before her, hands behind her back.
"Since the Fall of Beacon."
Weiss's gaze went back to the woman below, a frown on her face. She had a lot of things swirling around in her mind. "He's… doesn't it bother you… knowing that he's groomed your entire military career?"
"It did at first… even when we were working with Ozpin, back when I had first joined the Inner-Circle. It was a rough choice, especially being unaware of it. General Ironwood couldn't think of anyone better than me. By then, Ozpin had selected Y'shtola to become the Summer Maiden. She later told me what happened to the former one… how she had used the Relic of Destruction to…"
Winter paused, looking away from her sister. "The more I thought about things, the more I saw it as a privilege. Only four women can have these powers at once. Fall has been taken, as has Spring, and Summer is missing. Winter is all that is left. It's a chance to do something good, not just for Atlas but for all of Remnant."
"But your destiny-" Weiss said, looking back at her sister. "-It's been chosen for you, without your input."
"Perhaps, but I'm choosing it now. I've made it my own, and I take great pride in it. That has nothing to do with Father, it has nothing to do with the General… that belongs to me." she said firmly. Weiss couldn't help but smile, placing a hand on the cold glass before her.
"Hm… guess we've both had to do a little bit of that. Carving out our own way,"
"Indeed we have."
Winter's scroll suddenly beeped, causing her to frown. She opened it, tapping the screen. The top message read "This message comes from a contact who has marked all communications with you as classified" in bold letters. When she opened it, it was a message from General Ironwood, along with a link.
"Check the News."
"Well, speaking of the family name," Winter said, holding her scroll out enough for Weiss to see. She stared at it, seeing the feed was a live broadcast from Schnee Manor. Jacques Schnee walked in front of the cameras, holding his hand out so no one would interrupt him.
"What is he doing?" the former heiress questioned, earning a shrug from her sister. Her focus briefly fell on the headlines scrolling at the bottom of the screen.
"Missing Journalist found slain in her Midtown Apartment."
"Perimeter Wall Damaged Last Month- Resources and Funding are Stalled."
"Surface Level Grimm Attacks Increasing- Mantle Protection Agency Advises Staying Indoors."
"Weather Special- How to Keep You and Your Loved Ones Safe From Hyperthermia and Frostbite."
"Goddamn it, things are worse than I thought they were. What the hell is going on in Mantle? Why isn't General Ironwood doing anything?" Weiss thought to herself. Jacques finally began speaking, tapping the microphone a few times to ensure it was capturing his voice.
"Good day, citizens of Atlas and Mantle. I've made it obvious what I'd do if I get elected to the Council. I've made it no secret. I will be opposing General Ironwood and his senseless embargo that is Crippling all of Atlas. It is my belief that these measures are not only reckless but criminal.
With no shipments allowed to enter or leave the Kingdom, I know many are suffering. And my family has been weathering the same storm as many of you. Alas, it is due to this that I have taken drastic actions. It will no longer be possible to keep essential businesses open. Effective immediately, I am forced to shut down all nonessential S.D.C. operations.
If elected to office, I will make the changes necessary to fix what Ironwood has broken. Our economy, and our trust with the rest of the world. Atlas as a nation requires the cooperation of partners in Vacuo, Vale, and Mistral. This is a trust that has been broken by the closure of borders.
I hope you ask yourselves before the vote, can you trust anyone to stop Ironwood? Will Robyn Hill be able to get your jobs back? Do you trust Ivy Brown knowing that her interests outweigh the promises she has made?"
Several people held their microphones up, asking a myriad of questions, but the man simply turned away, holding his hand out. The broadcast ended shortly after, the feed cutting back to the newsroom, showing a rather nervous news anchor.
"Ahem… that was Jacques Schnee, CEO and Owner of Schnee Dust Company. Our colleagues are on scene at Schnee Manor and will continue to seek an interview with him. We will continue covering the situation as it develops."
Winter closed her scroll, an emotionless look on her face as she looked at her sister. She had a similar look on her face, the worry written in her eyes. "I don't know about you, but I think Father just provided the spark for this powder keg to finally ignite."
Weiss heard a crackle in her ear, causing her to reach for her communicator. "Weiss, what the hell is your father thinking?"
"Levi?"
"Is he insane? He didn't just shut down nonessential operations in Mantle, he shut off the heating grid. It's snowing down here, there are homeless people in the streets. Kids! We can't let him do that!"
"What am I supposed to do about it? I'm no longer the S.D.C. heiress, and even if I was, he'd still get his way. You've met my father, you know exactly how he acts." she replied.
"Yeah well, I'm not gonna stand by and let him get away with this. I'm gonna go talk to him."
Weiss's eyes widened in shock, her face going pale. "What? You can't just go there, Levi? He isn't going to entertain the idea. You'll get kicked out or worse!"
"What's he going to do to a Huntsman? Get me arrested? I'd like to see him try. Sorry, Weiss, whatever you say isn't going to stop me. I'm gonna give that dusty old snowman a piece of my fucking mind. Something I should have done the day we met." he said, ending the communication. Weiss let out a growl, clenching her hand tightly.
"That… absolute fucking dingus! God, why do men have to be such idiotic morons and not listen to reason?"
Winter laughed, causing her to turn around. "And what is so funny that you deigned it appropriate to laugh?"
"It's just… funny to see you get so annoyed. You are fond of that boy and are scared about what Father is going to do to him, aren't you?"
"I am not!"
Winter rolled her eyes, brushing past her sister. "The faster you admit it to yourself, the easier it'll be to settle your feelings. Just admit it to yourself and maybe you'll be able to think clearly."
"You are unbelievable!"

It may have been on a whim, but Levi hadn't really thought things through. When he hopped on a taxi and then requested an Atlas ship to take him to Schnee Manor, he hadn't expected it to be so fast. He hadn't had time to formulate anything in his mind, he was motivated by the sheer anger of what Jacques Schnee had done. Within minutes of his speech being aired, the heating grid had been deactivated. Almost instantly, the cold that had been abated by it returned, and the rain turned into snow. For the first time in decades, it was snowing in Mantle. People began to panic, those that didn't broke out into full-blown riots. The Atlas Soldiers had been forced to retreat, and he had even heard the General issuing out personal orders through the chatter.
If Ivy Brown had been stoking the flames, Jacques Schnee had lit the keg on fire. He had already seen reports of Grimm beginning to appear in Mantle. The night ahead of him was sure to be a long one, despite everything that was going on. He sighed audibly as the cab stopped in front of the Manor's front entrance. He handed the cabbie several lien, hopping out of the vehicle as the man asked if he wanted the change back.
Steeling his nerves, he moved toward the entrance of the giant manor. He hadn't even knocked on the door and already he could feel the cold presence. The building was large and lavish, a marble construction with various designs melded into one. All over, he could see the Schnee Emblem, on the fountain, on the front doors, etched into the moldings of the door. Whoever had paid for that must have had an ego trip of a lifetime. He shook his head, finally pressing the doorbell.
He stepped back for a moment, looking back at the large entrance. The large pillars acting as fountain centerpieces were gaudy, and in his opinion, far too egocentric. He wondered how much hard-light dust it took to keep those emblems glowing all day and night. He heard footsteps beyond the doors and turned around just as one opened.
"May I help you?"
The boy that opened it couldn't have been older than fifteen. Snow white hair dotted his head, and his eyes were bright blue. He had pale skin and a demure expression on his face, yet despite that, he could see the hardened look in his eye. He was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, with a bright blue suit vest over it. Black slacks adorned his legs, along with polished black shoes. His expression visibly changed the second he caught sight of Levi's ears and tail, smile souring.
"Yes, I'm here to speak with Mr. Jacques Schnee."
"I must apologize but he isn't taking visitors at the moment. Even if he was, I doubt he'd take a visit from someone of your… status." the boy said. Levi sighed, reaching into his pocket for his scroll.
"I'm afraid he's got no choice in the matter," he said, presenting his license. The boy looked at it, reading the information on it. He looked back up at Levi, growling.
"Fine then, follow me. I hope you enjoy verbal lashings because that is what you'll be getting," he said, allowing Levi to enter the manor.
He looked around for a moment, taking in the opulence of the grand entrance hall. A large stairwell led up, covered in a rich royal blue carpet. A pair of iron knights lined either side of the wings, keeping an eternal vigil over the front door. The Schnee Emblem had been plastered onto the ground, carved entirely out of marble, and placed down on the floor, which was polished to a gleam. It was so unbearably shiny that he felt bad for anyone having to clean it. He followed after the young man, who started leading him up the stairs.
"So, what business could you have with Father that you must whip out your license?"
"It's nothing too drastic, I hope," he replied, ears drooping a bit. "Look, I didn't want to whip out my license like that but you left me no choice. Whitley, right?"
"Heh… you know about me?"
"How could I not? Weiss has told me all about you." the faunus replied. This further soured the young man's mood. "She said you are young and headstrong, but you've got a kind heart. You act a lot like your father because you look up to him, but you don't see things the way he does, do you?"
"I'd rather not speak about that. Or at all, really," he rudely spat. Levi remained quiet, taking in his surroundings for the time being. The corridors leading away from the entrance hall were dark and dreary, and quite cold. How someone could live in this place was beyond him.
They arrived at a thick wooden door, which Whitley knocked on. Levi briefly thought he heard someone, but shook his head. "Father, someone is here to see you."
"Whitley, what did I tell you about taking visitors? I am not answering questions, I am not accepting interviews. Tell them to fuck off," Jacques shouted, making the boy cringe.
"How lovely, he's got such a way with words," Levi sarcastically said. Whitley ignored the silver-haired man, clearing his throat.
"I'm afraid that won't be possible, Father. He's not some reporter, he's a Huntsman, from Atlas Academy," he said. Levi heard some grumbles on the other side of the door, along with a long drawn sigh.
"Fine, send him in."
Whitley opened the door, gesturing for him to enter. Levi nodded, slipping into the study. The firelit room was warm and inviting, yet like the rest of the manor, had that unshakable feeling of coldness. All around him, several books were placed, titles he had never seen before, along with first-edition prints of historical books. There were busts of the entire Schnee Family, though he noticed Weiss and Winter were missing from the lineup. Even their pictures had been turned away, the only one still facing forward being Whitley's. He spotted the owner of the manor at the other end of the room, looking at some documents.
He briefly looked up, shock spreading over his face as he stood up. "You? How dare you present yourself before me?"
"I'm not here to cause you any trouble sir, I just came to speak. I was hoping to do this in a civil manner, but your son left me no choice but to use my credentials. It wouldn't look good if word got out that you are kicking Huntsmen out of your mansion." he said. Jacques growled, adjusting his tie.
"Fine. I shall entertain this meeting," he said, gesturing for the young man to sit. "Care for a drink?"
"Oh um… I'm not old enough to drink, thank you, though."
"I meant water, juice, tea. Anything but alcohol." the man spat, clearly annoyed by his presence. He politely declined, causing him to sit. "Alright, what do you wish to discuss that you've deigned it appropriate to visit me in my home?"
"I want to make a request. What you did earlier today is a very interesting political move, forcing Mantle's citizens to vote for you by holding them, hostage. It's a genius strategy, but that will only make them hate you more."
"Hah… as if I care what those bottom dwellers think about me. The only thing I need from them is their votes. For better or for worse, they'll have to vote for me. Who else is going to guarantee their future security? Robyn Hill? She's a petty thief dealing with gangsters for construction materials… and Ivy Brown? Well, I'm sure you know all about her."
"Indeed I do. Money laundering isn't the only thing she's hiding. She's responsible for the murder of the three journalists, as well as dealing with criminals. She's not the only one involved either, but that's not what I came here to discuss." Levi said, sitting up straight before the man. He folded his ears back, a firm look on his face. "I'd like for you to turn the heating grid back on in Mantle. I understand that for you, it might be a nonessential S.D.C. operation, but the people of Mantle don't see it that way,"
"And why should I do that?"
"Because the deaths of hundreds of men, women, and children, who cannot afford a place to live, will be on your hands. What, you think because you are running for Atlas's Council that you are exempt from the law? What you are doing is criminal, sir, and I cannot allow you to do that." Levi said firmly.
Jacques let out a genuine laugh, resting his hand on his desk as he reached for his whiskey. "Oh, this is hilarious. James is certainly doing a great job of raising the next generation. Now they think they know the law more than the people under them."
"I don't pretend to know the law, sir. But depriving people of basic human rights is illegal. It's a right to have that heating grid available for them. Mantle's Police Department can't take care of 2,000 homeless overnight. The people on the streets, the people in the Crater-"
"Most of them being thieves, vagrants, and street urchins. You have failed to convince me of anything, young man."
"Well what choice do they have?" the faunus shouted, glaring at the man. "They have to steal to survive because you rich Atlas folks take advantage of them! Paying them low wages and shitty benefits just so they have enough for a slice of bread is inhumane. You all live your fancy lives up here in the clouds while the ones who raised Atlas up suffer in despair. I'm tired of seeing people starving to death, and I am tired of seeing people being treated like shit! Because no one, and I mean no one, deserves that fate!"
"Who the hell are you to scream at me?"
"And who the fuck are you to deprive the people of what they need? Atlas was founded 80 years ago as a nation of freedom and progress. Under no circumstance can the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness be taken away from its citizens. For when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, their duty, to throw off such Government, and provide new Guards for their future security. That's what was written by the founders of the Kingdom of Atlas in its Constitution not long after the Great War, and for that amount of time, you rich bastards have done the opposite.
This is just the beginning, the people are rioting, the people hate you, and when pushed too far, they will revolt. It won't be long until they figure out a way to get up to Atlas. And when they do, you'll have no choice but to give them what they deserve. It's either that or get your head cut off and put on a pike. And I doubt that's what you want, Jacques."
Jacques remained silent, holding back the urge to laugh as he poured himself a drink. He sipped at his glass, glancing away from the man. "I must admit, you certainly know how to give an impressive speech."
"Thank you, sir, I won a public speaking trophy when I was in Signal Academy," he said, brushing his hair out of his face.
"And yet, you haven't convinced me. It is easy to sit here and spit platitudes at each other. But the reason I shut down those operations is because there's no one willing to work. You've seen how it is out there. The riots, the protests, all thanks to your buddy, General Ironwood. You can give impassioned speeches all night if you want. But it doesn't change facts. The Heating Grid can't remain on if no one is shoveling Dust into the furnaces."
Levi frowned, gritting his teeth. "There has to be a way… something, anything."
"Let me ask you this boy, why do you care so much? The people of Mantle aren't exactly fans of your kind. Yet here you are, speaking to someone who's hated by the faunus, begging me to turn on the heating grid. Why?"
"It doesn't matter if they hate the faunus or not. That doesn't change the fact that they don't deserve to freeze to death. When I decided to become a Huntsman, I knew people would oppose me because of my heritage. But I am proud to be a faunus because it has led me to meeting compassionate and kindhearted people. People like Sonata, people like my friend and leader Ruby.. people like your daughter, Weiss."
He looked away from the man, whose hand shook at the mention of his daughter. "All of them have changed me. I was mistreated by my own kind and called useless for countless days of my life. There came a point in my life where I thought it would be better if I didn't live anymore. And just before I swallowed those blue pills, it was the light of Beacon Academy that opened my eyes. There is a lot of suffering in the world, Mr. Schnee, don't get me wrong. I don't pretend to understand how the world works, and I don't want to force my views on anyone. I am a Huntsman, and it's my job to defend the people. Whether they like me, or not."
Jacques remained quiet, letting his words settle in his mind. Normally he wouldn't entertain the idea, especially that of a faunus. But something in him was compelled to listen. He himself didn't know why, perhaps it was the effect this man had on him. He shook his head, reaching for his phone. He dialed a number, holding the device to his ear.
"Yes, Thompson? It's Jacques… I'd like for you to scrounge up a skeleton crew. Turn the heating grid back on, tell the men that do show up that they'll be paid triple their monthly wages."
Levi felt himself smiling a bit, his ears perking up. "Thank you, Mr. Schnee."
"Don't thank me. You've managed to convince me, had anyone else screamed at me, I would have kicked their asses out of here. Now if that is everything you wanted to say to me, do take yourself out of my house." the alabaster-haired man said, finishing the last of his drink. Levi stood up, giving the man a polite bow before making his way to the door.
He paused for a moment, remembering their first meeting. He looked back at the man, a look of curiosity on his face. "When we met back at the old Schnee Dust Mine, you told Weiss not to believe everything they told her. What do you know about James Ironwood that we don't?"
"That's something you must discover for yourself, boy. If you haven't already, then do your due diligence. Before you throw yourself headfirst into military life. He's already brainwashed Winter, don't let him do the same to you."
Levi narrowed his eyes, opening the door. "Ah, and Athan?"
He looked back at the man, who had a somber look on his face, the first he'd ever seen from him. "I don't know what she sees in you but… keep her safe, would you?"
"I will promise."
He left the study shortly after, surprised to see the cold man not acting cold. He was met with an empty corridor, Whitley nowhere to be seen. As he turned toward where he had come, he heard something shatter, causing him to move forward. He stopped in front of the room where he heard it, seeing the door was cracked open.
"Um, excuse me? I heard something break, no one is hurt, right?"
"Hwah? Hurt… Nah I'm not hurt~"
Standing before him was an obviously intoxicated woman. She looked like she had seen better days, yet despite that she was beautiful. The fancy dress she wore accented her frame, the glow of her skin from the firelight showed her good points. She had a worn expression on her face, a far-off look in her eyes. He noticed the broken bottle on the floor, along with the liquid seeping into the carpet.
"Um… ma'am… are you sure you are okay?"
"What does it look like? I'm all out of booze. Make yourself useful and get me another bottle from the bar. That bastard Jacques keeps the fancy shit away from me. Hurry up!" she shouted, making him frown.
"I'm not a servant, ma'am," he replied, stepping forward. She narrowed her eyes a bit, though her vision was blurred, and she could see multiple of him, a look of realization dawned on her. She frowned looking away.
"I'm shorry, I thought you were a new hire," she said, stumbling a bit. He quickly caught her, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Whooo… the room is spinning, mind helping me sit?"
He nodded, guiding her down toward the nearby chair. He noticed a half-drunk bottle of vodka on the table. She followed his gaze, her eyes lighting up a bit as she saw it. He took a hold of it, keeping it away from her. "Hey… give it back."
"No, ma'am. You have clearly had too much to drink," he said, only for her to tear it out of his grasp. She pressed it to her lips, swallowing several gulps before setting it down beside her.
"I heard voices from Jacques' study… you were yelling at him, weren't you? He deserves it… fucking bastard."
"I uh… came to ask a favor of him."
"You wouldn't be the first one. That other man likes hanging out here, spending long hours with him. Who knows what they're up to," she slurred, leaning back in her chair. "If only my little girls were here, they'd brighten up my day."
Levi knelt before her, taking a hold of her hand. "You must be their mother… Winter and Weiss I mean."
Her face lit up a bit, the drunken look almost vanishing from her face. "You know my girls?"
"I do, Winter is helping me train my Semblance a bit, and Weiss is… my best friend. She's helped me out a lot in the past, covered my ass, and taught me how to properly use a sword. She's been a wonderful friend to me."
"I see… I'm so happy to hear that. I haven't seen her in so long, is she okay?" she asked, earning a nod from the man. "That's… good."
The dull sound of a clock caused him to jump, making him look toward it. It was already 7 at night and he hadn't returned to Atlas Academy. He let out a sigh, squeezing the woman's hand slightly as he looked back at her. "I must get going, ma'am. Do you have anything to say to Weiss? I'll make sure she gets it!"
"Tell her that I love her very much, and I'd like for her to visit me. She shouldn't be afraid of her Father, he's long since stopped caring about her. I'm dying to see her," she said, earning a nod from Levi.
"I'll make sure she gets your message. I uh… please stop drinking, I don't think your daughters would like seeing you like that."
"I would but… vodka takes the pain away," she slurred, closing her eyes. He grew concerned, only to hear her snoring. Sighing with relief, he took a long look at the room, seeing all the other bottles left behind. He nodded to himself, flicking his coat.
It didn't take him long to flush all of the bottles, leaving only one in the room. He also left the woman a note, wishing for her to get better. He knew how hard it was to kick the habit, but she needed help. He briefly passed Whitley, who scoffed at the man as he made his way out. He didn't say anything, just focusing on leaving.
"This has been a sobering experience. What Weiss said is true, this place is unbearably cold. No wonder she left." he thought to himself. Just as he was about to reach the door, he heard something that shook him to his core.
Several loud explosions in the distance. From the sound of it, they had come from Mantle. He broke into a sprint, quickly stepping out into the driveway. Though it was faint, he could hear sirens and screams as well as the audible roar of Grimm. He felt the hairs on his arms stand on end.
"What the heck was that?"
Levi looked over his shoulder, noticing Whitley standing behind him. To his surprise, even Jacques had come out to see what had happened. He opened his mouth to speak, only for the crackle of his radio to cut him off.
"Levi, can you hear me?"
"I can hear you, Ruby! Did you just get back?"
"Yes, but that doesn't matter. There were several explosions at the outer wall, there are Grimm all over Midtown. The MPD and Atlas Soldiers are doing their best, but it's all hands on deck. Yang, Blake, Weiss, and Team ORNJ are on their way, we need you."
He sighed, nodding to himself. "I'll be there as soon as I can. I had to take a bit of a detour, I'll see if I can hitch a ride on any available transport. Ruby… stay safe, okay?"
"I should be saying that to you, dummy. Weiss told me you went to tear her father a new asshole. You better tell me how that went, because I've been wanting to do that since Day 1." she said, making him laugh.
"I'll give you the deets later, over and out, Rubes," he said, glancing back at Whitley and Jacques, a look of seriousness on his face. "Someone attacked Mantle's outer wall, there are Grimm all over Midtown. If you have security guards, make sure they're ready, just in case. I know Atlas has its own Hard-Light Shields, but I don't trust them to hold if hundreds of Grimm attack it at once."
"It's honestly a surprise to see you defending those goons so readily," Jacques said, tugging on his cufflink. "But it is admirable. I shall call for transport, it's the least I can do."
"Thank you, sir,"
Though one situation had been settled, Levi was readily thrown into another one. It was going to be a long night for him. He could already tell.
A/N: For a long time, I wanted Levi to cook Jacques Schnee. Especially for how he treated Weiss, he's become quite overprotective of her, especially after everything that happened in Mistral. He doesn't like how the man has destroyed his family and well, that led to a lot of things coming out. I always intended for Levi to give the man a piece of his mind, but this flowed out a lot more naturally than I thought, probably because I had a lot of personal gripes with the bastard. But also didn't want him to just be an "Antagonist". I wanted to humanize him a bit. He's still a father who cares for his daughter, in his own way, I suppose. But yes, I do hope you enjoyed this chapter. It was so fun to write. See you next week!
