Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of the thief and the girl who walked on fire. Enjoy the 900-word chapter. I don't own RWBY, Monty Oum and Rooster Teeth do.
It was the sound of the growls that hit Cye's ears first. He had Nightingale in his hand in a flash.
Cinder turned only to be greeted with the Beowolf being cut in half, the wolf like monster collapsed into the snow. Cye turned only for another 4 to take their place.
Cye watched the creatures howl and lunge at him and Cinder. He twirled the falchion and greeted the beasts.
"Run!" Cye yelled at Cinder as he dodged the lunge of a Beowolf.
Cinder hadn't seen many grim up close, but Rhodes… No, Cinder could think about him later.
Cinder drew her swords and decapitated a leaping Beowolf that tried to flank Cye. Cye blinked and was almost caught off guard by another Beowolf. The 2 remaining creatures circled the teenagers.
"Ever fight a Grimm before?" Cye questioned again as Cinder shook her head. "You can't be scared, that just makes more come… We also need to be quick; this cold will kill us before too long." Cye said before he twirled his weapon.
The Beowolf leapt at them only for Cye to backflip into the air and land on the back of the other Beowolf. It growled and tried to swipe him off only for Cye to slide down it's back. He was about to turn and stab the Grimm only to be slashed across the face. His aura sparkled a dark blue as he collapsed into the snow.
It stepped towards him only to be greeted by Cinder's swords exploding through its chest.
The other Beowolf grabbed Cinder and wretched her over its head. Cinder gasped as the Grimm lowered her towards it's slobbering jaws.
Cinder wanted to cry before a flash of motion cut the young girl off. She turned to see Cye had clambered onto the Grimm's back and separated its arm from its socket. He landed in a crouch.
The Grimm snarled in pain only for Cye to stab through his armpit, impaling the Grimm in the stomach. He squeezed the trigger, firing a bullet through the barrel on the hilt.
The Grimm collapsed into the snow, dead. Cye looked at Cinder who had fallen into the deep snow. Cye offered his hand to her as he hummed and looked at the dead Grimm.
"Thank you." Cye said as Cinder wrapped her hand around his. He pulled her to her feet. "There will be more… We should move, your freeze to death soon…" Cye said and looked off in the distance at Mantle.
He hoped his half hour comment was wrong. He'd never be able to help Cinder to Mantle in time.
Cinder gave a nod and pushed herself towards Mantle. Cye pushed himself towards her. Cinder blinked as Cye wrapped his hand around hers.
"Keep close, I still have an aura… I'll stay warm till we get there." Cye stated and sighed.
Cye watched Cinder look at him. Cye sighed and slowly started to walk through the snow. Cinder looked at him.
"Why are you helping me?" Cinder asked, her voice hoarse.
"Do you know I'm a Faunus?" Cye questioned as he and her walked through the snow. Cinder nodded and hummed. "Do you care like your fancy hotel does?" Cye asked, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight.
"No…" Cinder stated which caused Cye to nod.
"Then you're one of the first people I trust…" Cye stated as he turned back to walking through the snow. "I… Haven't had a good life. My dad is famous, but I don't want to be known as the son of war hero." Cye said as he continued and then continued trekking through the snow.
"You don't know who I am." Cinder said while Cye hummed. She shivered as Cye quickened his pace.
"You're the only person who doesn't treat me like a filthy animal." Cye said as he continued walking. "Your my friend in my book." Cye said with a warm smile.
Cinder blinked and then allowed Cye to continue guiding her towards the city of Mantle. He knew very well that they'd be making it there by the skin of their teeth. Cye hummed as his eyes scanned the horizon.
"We need to keep going or we're going to freeze out here, just remember that." Cye said while he hummed and continued to trek through the snow.
He knew for a fact that this would be a long night. He cracked his fingers on his other hand. Cye knew for a fact that he'd continued to question his next move.
Cinder looked at him as Cye continued to crunch through the snow once more. Cye hummed and looked around as his eyes scanned the horizon as he blinked and narrowed his eyes for a moment.
The Faunus could see more in the dark then Cinder.
They'd reach Atlas before Hypothermia hit… But they weren't out of the woods yet.
