Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of the thief and the girl who walked on fire. Enjoy the 900-word chapter. I don't own RWBY, Monty Oum and Rooster Teeth do.
Cinder could only spin the swords back and forth, constantly questioning her surroundings. She looked to Cye who looked more curious then scared.
"We need to move... Or we die." Cye put in as he crossed his arms and turned to look to Cinder with interest. "You will not kill them when it comes down to it, yes?" Cye asked, his arms crossed as he drew in a breath.
There was far too much at stake to simply stop now. He knew the next monster around the corner was going to be more guards. There was going to be more guards nonetheless which made sure as he turned.
"Yes." Cye heard from Cinder as a bullet passed over his head while he sighed. "Damn it!" Cinder stated as she ducked into cover as she looked at the others.
"More guards?" Cye asked as he put his back to the wall with Cinder next to her. "I'm going to go on ahead. Keep next to me, make sure to not try and draw attention." Cye stated as he leapt over the cover, deflecting the bullets back and forth into the wall.
He watched Cinder slowly follow after him, keeping low to the ground as she swung her swords. She looked at him while he she backflipped into the air and landed in a crouch next to her. She made sure to keep an eye to the guards while humming.
"There's got to be a small army." Cinder added which was met by a nod with Cye.
"Yes, there probably is." Cye responded while cracking his fingers as he paused to protect Cinder. "Keep going, we don't stop." Cye added and cut a bullet in half as he shook his head.
Cinder felt something almost hit her arm. Another bullet split the air over her head, she could only guess that these guards were more elite than the others. That made things more dangerous when it came down to it. Yet? Cinder would be DAMNED if she gave in easily, she wouldn't relent, that was FAR too easy for someone like her to just surrender, not when she had spent years under the boot of her mother. She had been the child of a monster when it came down to it... And she would be damned if she turned out like that.
"Capture the intruders!" One of the guards stated while Cinder darted down the next tunnel.
"Cinder!" Cye yelled, looking after her. "Damn it, Cin..." Cye stated as he shook his head.
He pondered whether or not the guards were worth it when it came down to it. Stopping to fight them? They'd simply regroup and come down on them like a hammer. But if he didn't give chase to Cinder? He'd be putting her in more danger than she currently was.
That was NOT an option within the deck that he wished to play when it came down to it. He cared more about results than anything and right now? He didn't think staying here held ANY real advantage. Yes, he'd make sure to retreat, that was the smart choice when it came down to it.
"Damn it, Cin." Cye muttered before he turned and retreated down the hallway, giving ground to the SDC guards.
He wasn't prideful enough to admit that he'd be better off alone. The thought didn't even hold a grain of space in his mind, Cinder came first. She had to, he had made a promise to her, and Cye was not someone who simply left others to their fate.
Cye chased after Cinder, the sound of boots in the back of his ears. He knew the guards wouldn't be lost in the maze of tunnels. They had the advantage of terrain which could only mean they would hunt them down. People like him didn't feel fear, they felt the rush of adrenaline down the nape of their throats as they rushed to their next objective.
"Cinder!" Cye yelled, his voice pained from straining to be heard over the sound of gunfire.
'Damn her.' Cye thought, the sound of footsteps ringing like bullets in the back of his head.
Had they given up trying to catch them alive? Cye could only guess why they hadn't the desire to even try and detain them. It would be a blemish upon their status when it came down to it. To have allowed someone to gain this ground inside their own ownings? It made the Atlesian elite look bad.
"Why am I even here to begin with?" Cye muttered before he purged the thought from his head.
There was more work to be done. More fighting to be done and plenty of guards to have to throw himself into.
Cinder turned, her golden eyes shining in the darkness as she looked upon Cye with a nod.
