Chapter 9- Vermillion
Vermillion really was a beautiful place to visit Ash decided the day after getting there. They had arrived the previous night and after a long bath had conked out as soon as his head hit the pillow. Walking around the harbour he noticed a lot of people setting for what looked like some kind of event. Stopping a random person, they told him that Lt Surge had organised a mini tournament for that weekend where a fabulous prize was being offered. No one knew what the prize was just yet but the top two would receive something. Chatting to his Pokémon he decided that he would enter, at least to see where they were up to battle wise because so far, they had swept everyone they had come across since Brocks Golem. That was going on for two months now and it was irritating.
After the discussion about Bill, it had quickly turned to the upcoming battle with Lt Surge "we're in danger of becoming arrogant" Ash had said to them, "and that leads to cockiness, which leads to loss. I don't mind us losing, it shows us where we need to improve but cockiness creates arrogance in people. And I don't like that."
So, a tournament with hopefully strong opponents was just what Ash needed right now. He planned to rotate his team throughout the battles. Hopefully they would all get a turn. That grand prize sounded intriguing. That night Ash called all his Pokémon into a mini meeting.
"I've been thinking about what you said Pikachu about the Ancients" he started "and I've come to a sort of decision. I'm going to inform Sam and my mother about what was said, and we'll make a decision together. As you said Pikachu, I've given her my word and you don't do that to an Ancient without retribution happening should you not. Hopefully between us we can come up with a solution. I don't think we'll survive an all-out war again against Ancients, the Royals and the disgruntled Pokémon. Those afraid of Arceus' edicts will surely rally to them. I don't want to be the cause of that."
"I think that's a wise decision" Pikachu said "at least then people who are able to do something like Sam would be in the know and you wouldn't be on your own. Maybe get Bill involved as well so he can have input as it'll be falling on him to let Dragonite know."
"Good point, I hadn't thought of that" Ash said.
"Would you tell her" Squirtle asked surprising them all "if you found out where her family was would you tell her?"
"I would have to consider the implications of what would happen Squirtle" Ash said seriously "but everyone deserves a family and if I can help her find hers then I wouldn't feel that bad about helping. It's the aftermath I'm more worried about."
"Your course of action is probably best for all for now" Bulbasaur said gaining the nodding head agreement of everyone else.
The next day he called Sam and his mum to arrange a meeting for that evening and sent an email to Bill. The most beneficial part about having Professor status was the room. It came with a conference call TV screen so many could join in at the same time. At 7:30 Ash made the call, while all his Pokémon sat on the bed behind him listening in and one by one they all joined. The last to join was Bill.
"Hello everyone" Ash began "I'm aware I'm likely the only one with a conference call TV so let me introduce Bill to everyone. You already know of Sam Oak, the other person on the call is my mother. Now the reason she is in this call is because she tells it to me straight and we have an agreement that while I'm out traveling to let her know when anything serious happens." After a round of "Hellos" Ash continued "now the reason for this call is because of what happened the other day at Bills lighthouse. I needed time to figure out what I was going to do and decided the best course of action was to have us all decide together."
"That sounds serious Ash" Sam said "ok, what can we help with."
"Bill and I found an Ancient" Ash said.
"Do not joke about that Ash" Sam said uncharacteristically serious "please tell me you are kidding."
"Unfortunately, not Professor" Ash said.
"Tell me you never promised it anything" Sam said.
"Sadly, I did. In my defence I didn't know what it was when I did so" Ash replied grimly
"Erm" Delia interrupted them "can someone let us mortals know what an Ancient is."
"Your choice of the word mortal is quite apt here Delia" Sam said "the Ancients are a species of Pokémon that were once revered as Gods. They ruled their area and were worshipped by the inhabitants. They also bred with the Pokémon they ruled and in doing so created armies that were steadfastly loyal. But as you know the more people that inhabit an area the faster the natural resources are consumed, and expansion becomes a priority and so fights broke out between warring Ancients for territory. Ancient Pokémon are directly responsible for the last mass extinction, a hundred thousand humans and Pokémon died in the space of eighty years. I believe we've only just got back to around those numbers in the last two centuries."
"Yup" Ash said "I only found out what it was when Pikachu told me that night. Wild-born Pokémon grow up on these stories as cautionary tales. Arceus' edicts are mandatory for all Pokémon and humans. We live in harmony NOW because we came to an understanding a few centuries ago. But there are a lot who don't like the thought of being captured and have no choice but to obey. A lot of Pokémon are extremely resentful that if they get caught by a bad trainer then they're stuck with them for life in a miserable situation. I have four Pokémon here that were in that exact situation until I rescued them and if I wasn't around would happily rally around the nearest banner fighting against their oppression. And this ties in to the Ancient we found and to Bill"
"Yes" Bill said taking over "for the last few months I've been hearing a call from across the ocean. I recorded it and sent it back out every night. And around a week ago I received an answer while Ash was visiting my lighthouse. It turns out it was a 42-foot Dragonite who was searching for her family every night and has been for centuries by her account."
"And you promised to find her family" Delia said sadly "didn't you Ash?"
"I did" Ash said sighing "As I said I didn't know what she was. I'd heard of Royals who are bigger than normal Pokémon, we've even met two in Viridian Forest. And I'd heard of Pokémon that were giant centuries ago in a few of the books in Sam's lab, but all the accounts said they were extinct, so I didn't think much of it. It was only after meeting her that Pikachu informed me that if Dragonite is still around then some of the others could still be around too. And if I help Dragonite find them then a war might happen again. And while a family reunion is a happy thing, I don't want to be responsible for thousands of Pokémon and humans dying."
"But Dragonite seemed so sweet" Bill said interrupting "she has been lonely for centuries; she deserves a family".
"Bill" Sam said shaking his head "no one is suggesting otherwise but I suggest you read Ash's thesis Lance uses to teach his classes on dragon Pokémon. They are not normal Pokémon. There's a reason not many people use dragon types. They are wired extremely different than most types. They're machines, they train to the bone and have a thirst to be the best no matter the cost and if they don't respect you as a trainer then they will find someone else. They're the only Pokémon I've ever known to willingly ignore Arceus' edicts and survive.
You're not stupid Bill, you've read up on Pokémon. Gyarados have been known to destroy towns in blind rages, Dragonite could level several cities should they lose their heads. Hydriegon cannot be stopped without them being killed if they decide to go on a rampage. And now we've got a 42-foot Dragonite roaming around the world in search of her family. What do you think would happen should she decide that searching the oceans isn't enough and decides land would be a better choice? How many people do you think would be happy to see her wandering around. A person on their own can make a smart decision. People in groups are stupid and follow the herd and if the leader is a nutcase, then all rationale gets thrown out of the window.
This is a 42-foot Dragon type. You're lucky to be alive Bill."
"Well, we're lucky that we don't know where they are then" Delia said, "aren't we?"
"Yeah, about that" Ash said, "I think I know where they might be."
"You're thinking about Pokemopolis and Pokelantis aren't you, Ash?" Sam asked, "and the ruins just outside of Pallet Town" seeing Ash nod had Sam grimly smiling "I'm afraid we have no real choice here then. We need to inform her that we may have found them. What I'll do before we do so is arrange an excavation group to thoroughly search Pokemopolis and find anything that may be related to her family. We'll do the same for Pokelantis at the same time. We need to be in control of the Pokémon or at least in control of whatever controls them should there be any there. We cannot let them out. All we can do is let Dragonite know that we've been uncovering clues. At least until the team leaves the site before Dragonite visits it. That way while we've been truthful, we've also been part of deceit and prevented a world war."
"I don't like this Sam" Delia said, "we're knowingly denying a Pokémon a family."
"I'm not thrilled about this either Delia" Sam said "but what other choice do we have? While we have no proof that a war will start, we have no proof to reject such an argument. Any Pokémon that has remained sealed in the ruins will awaken and still believe they're at war. They won't know centuries have passed by. We cannot risk it."
"So, what's the plan of action?" Bill asked leaning back "I'm the one that will be giving frequent updates to Dragonite after all."
"Well from what I can see" Ash said taking over "it all depends on how frequent Dragonite visits you. If its once every few months, then that makes it easier. We'll provide you with information every now and then about a possible location, we'll try to drag it out as long as we can and while that's going on Sam will have two teams excavate the area around Pallet Town ruins. I can't see her letting it go on for a year so by that time we need the ruins done in six months so she can visit them. We also need to leave no trace we've been there recently, or she'll suspect her family may have been found and moved, after which there's no telling what she may do. Or tell her that we have a team digging the area looking for clues. That may make her decide to pay the team a visit though which could be dangerous. I suggest Sam that you inform Lance and have him build a team of people specially designed for taking down an Ancient, should it come to that. Hopefully it doesn't but prepare for the worst and all that."
"That seems like a good idea" Sam said "I'll start sending emails right away and keep you updated on progress Bill. I'll speak soon Ash; Bill I'll keep in touch. Delia, I'll see you tomorrow?" Bill nodded and ended the call.
"You will Sam" Delia said clearly still unhappy "Ash, stay on the line, I want to talk to you".
"Don't be too harsh on him Delia" Sam said, "he wasn't to know."
"I'm his mother Sam" she replied firmly "I know how to parent my own child."
"I didn't suggest otherwise" Sam said gently before hanging up leaving just Delia and Ash. Looking at her nervously he waited on her to start. After years of being so close Ash knew that his mother was trying to formulate what she wanted to say
"First of all, I'm very proud of you for informing us all about what happened. And I'm also very proud of you for wanting to make a difference in a Pokémon's life."
"Everyone deserves a family mum" Ash said quietly.
"Do not interrupt Ash" she said sharply rebuking him "I am very aware of what having a broken family can do. And I'm very aware of what coming from a broken home has done for you and how you feel when you meet a Pokémon that is in the same situation. I truly wish it were otherwise but unfortunately those Team Rocket scumbags took your father away from us and in doing so shaped our views on the world. But you need to realise Ash that you're my world, and your actions have consequences that could take you away from me. You cannot save everyone Ash, and promising things you have no way of delivering is a sure-fire way of creating resentment towards you. And given what your task is you're already in danger of doing so and it bloody terrifies me" wiping away tears she carried on "I have no issue with you being the caring person you are towards Pokémon, but you need to stop and think about a situation before you give someone or some Pokémon your word when you have no way of guaranteeing you'll be able to deliver. You're lucky that Sam has the connections he does to be able to try and prevent a war that you could have inadvertently caused. Now I'll say no more about it, but I want you to think on about your decisions. Very soon you'll have to stand by everything you decide and won't be able to rely on anyone else digging you out of trouble. I'm going to go now Ash. I love you very much. Good night" and with that Delia hung up leaving a very tense silence. Standing up Ash walked over to the bed and lay down.
"I know that she's right guys" Ash said covering his eyes "I know how colossal a mistake my promise could have been, and still very well might be. I'm very lucky that Sam can try and fix things because we're in no position to do anything at the minute. We're still rookies with just one badge. At the minute we're nothing. I just can't help myself when it comes to Pokémon. They've been the only thing I knew I loved, apart from my mum since I was three years old and the only thing I knew I'd be good at. There's a reason I gravitated towards you guys. I have this unending need to fix things and I don't know why."
"I do" Bulbasaur said "because I had the same issue before I decided to travel with you. It's the only way you know you truly make a difference because the results are clear to see. You only need to look around the room to see what difference you as our trainer has been. Eevee is no longer the shy little fox who was terrified of her own tail, Charmander has a renewed thirst for life and battling and you help him with that when at one point in his life he was on the verge of death, I was content to be a guardian for Pokémon in my village but in doing so I prevented them from finding their own place in the world along with myself. I can't comment on Squirtle as he hasn't talked much about his issues but it's clear that he was abandoned and hopefully the mistrust of humans can go away with you as his trainer."
"I won't be his trainer for much longer" Ash said, "Nurse Joy has said she'll find a reserve for him."
"Well maybe you should give each other a chance" Charmander said looking between them "he won't find a better trainer than you I can guarantee that. And you can help him realise that not all humans are bad".
"Well, that's up to him" Ash said sitting up looking at Squirtle "my mother was righter than even we knew. She always is. I cannot save everyone, and I've not really given you a chance. But on the flip side you've not given me one either. So, I'll give you the choice. By the time we leave here you'll either be my Pokémon or you'll go to the nature reserve. Should you go to the reserve I will wish you well and we'll likely never see each other again. Should you be my Pokémon though you'll become family. I will warn you though, we don't do a quid-pro-quo thing in our family" seeing his confused face he clarified it "we don't do a 'I've done this for you, so you have to do this for me' thing. We do things for each other because were family and it's the right thing to do. So, if that's your thought process let me know and I'll send you to the reserve. If not, I'll train you to be the best you can be. I suggest you talk more to the others to find out our goals and my thoughts on any issues you may have. It's late guys. Let's get ready for bed.
The next day Ash headed to the tournament to put his name forward. It was a basic 32-person tournament in brackets. So, Ash needed five wins to get the prize. It sounded simple enough to Ash so he talked to his team about what order they would go in. Eevee would start, followed by Bulbasaur, then Charmander and lastly Pikachu for the last two to ensure victory. As Squirtle hadn't been scanned let alone trained he had to use one of them twice. Walking onto the field after hearing his name called, he faced off against the opposing trainer. They sent out a Geodude. Should be easy.
"Let's go Eevee" Ash called out as the little fox entered the battlefield "Ignore the crowd Eevee, focus on the opponent."
"You're sending that little runt against my Geodude?" the guy mocked "your funeral. Geodude lets finish this quick. Use Rollout" with that the Geodude began spinning rapidly in place before launching itself at Eevee.
"Quick Attack to get out of the way" Ash shouted, "It's not very fast just yet so we'll let him build up speed."
"That's an idiotic move, but what else can we expect from someone who sends an Eevee in against a Geodude. Geodude, smash the little runt" the man crowed.
"Not yet Eevee" Ash said. He had trained with Eevee using Pikachu as a fast Pokémon to establish a style. She knew what Ash was doing and focused on just dodging out of the way, waiting for the right moment to strike. After a minute of waiting Geodude was getting really fast, so Ash kept quiet. "Now Eevee, you know what to do."
And without missing a beat just as Geodude flashed by her she swung her tail at it, covered it in a metallic sheen and launched it into the wall where it was stuck, face first. Eevee just walked back over to Ash's side where she nonchalantly sat down.
"What the hell?" the man shouted looking around bewildered "what just happened?"
"The winner is Ash" the referee said as Ash didn't say a word and walked off the field with Eevee who jumped onto his shoulder. "Good show Eevee" Ash said scratching her head. "Bulbasaur next"
Around half an hour later he walked back onto the field "and here comes Ash who made short work of his first opponent with his Eevee. Will he stick with her or change?" the referee said.
"Let's go" Ash said releasing Bulbasaur who landed on the field and tested it with his feet. Nodding back at Ash, he readied himself for whoever was released.
"Interesting" his opponent said as she released an Ivysaur.
"Well look at this" the referee said "it's the evolution showdown. How will this one pan out"
"Interesting indeed" Ash said scanning the Ivysaur "Ivysaur, Pokedex Number 2, The Seed Pokémon and the evolved form of Bulbasaur. This Pokémon is Female. When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs. The bulb on its back grows by drawing energy. It gives off an aroma when it is ready to bloom."
"Hmm we can work with that Bulbasaur. Let's start out with a Tackle" and Bulbasaur launched himself forward at a speed that surprised the rest. Slamming into the Ivysaur before his opponent could react who was thrown backwards wincing as it got up.
"Razor Leaf" his opponent shouted clearly agitated.
"Vine Whip them and then close in Bulbasaur" and he did just that swiping the leaves out of the air. Ash already saw that Bulbasaur was stronger than his opponent given the size and sharpness of the leaves it launched. "Now Bulbasaur use your vines to launch yourself in the air and use Stun Spore" doing just that he amazed the crowd by doing a complete 180 over the head of Ivysaur who was stunned in awe before it was paralysed by the Stun Spore. Landing Bulbasaur quickly turned around and picked up the Ivysaur in its vines before launching it across the field. Ivysaur struggled to get to its feet, clearly battered and bruised before looking up to see a charging Bulbasaur hit it head on and throw it backwards where it passed out.
"Bulbasaur wins the battle" the referee said as Ash recalled Bulbasaur, said "Good battle" and walked off the field. The girl was still just standing there in shock until the referee urged her to leave the arena. How the hell did a Bulbasaur beat her Ivysaur? And what was with that leap? She would have to practice that one with Ivysaur. Looking for him she was amazed to find him just calmly sitting watching the next battle. Sitting beside him she wondered what to say.
"It was a decent battle. Thank you" Ash said surprising her "for weeks now we've beaten everyone that's been put in our way so don't feel bad."
"But how are you so strong?" she asked.
"Training until we drop and a good diet for recovery" Ash said "as I said, don't feel bad. In a years' time I'll be lifting the winner's trophy at the league"
"That's very cocky" she said huffing "an attitude like that is never a good thing".
"You're right" Ash said surprising her "we entered this competition hoping to lose, we haven't lost in two months now and that was against a Gym Leaders Elite Pokémon. We're very aware of what arrogance can do. We want to lose to show us how far we have yet to go. Looking at this competition though I fear that's unlikely. Your Ivysaur was good. Bulbasaur was just better. Looks like I'm up again soon. Nice talking to you" he said standing up leaving her in silence, unaware a man was standing off to the left hidden in the shadows listening to every word.
Charmander demolished the next Pokémon. His opponent had the bright idea to use a Koffing. Charmander exploded it using its own noxious gasses leaving Ash shaking his head but in the semi-finals.
"And we come to our second semi-final match between Ash and Tabitha. John has already booked his way into the final with his powerful Dragonair. Who will join him?" The referee said.
"Let's go Parasect" Tabitha said releasing a mushroom like Pokémon. Ash scanned it. "Parasect, Pokedex Number 47, The Mushroom Pokémon. This Pokémon is male. A host-parasite pair in which the parasite mushroom has taken over the host bug. Prefers damp places."
"Let's go Pi" Ash said as Pikachu jumped onto the field. "You can have the first move" Ash said.
"A mistake. Spore" she said. Ash had seen her tactic in action. Put the opponents Pokémon to sleep and then slashes away until it faints. It was very effective and was very frustrating. Well Ash wouldn't allow that. "Let's not mess around Pikachu, Thunderbolt, quarter power."
At that an arc of electricity flew through the air and impacted on the Parasect causing it to screech in pain and halt trying to release the sleeping powder. "Ramp it up Pi, half power" and Pikachu did just that causing it to begin to frazzle and smoulder.
"Parasect you must get away" his trainer said franticly as her Pokémon began to topple over.
"Stop Pi" Ash commanded "it's over."
It was over. It was brutal, some would say too brutal, but Ash knew that in a Pokémon battle it was the trainer's fault if they lost. Shaking his head Ash walked off the field while an emergency nurse came rushing over to tend to the Parasect. Sitting down he was joined by a huge man with spiky yellow hair "that's some power your Pikachu has" he said. "a little harsh, wasn't it?"
Looking up Ash immediately recognised him as Lt Surge. Not showing he knew who he was he answered "He really is. He has dreams of putting Raichu's to shame and is well on his way of doing just that. It's a pity we haven't had a decent challenge yet in this tournament, hopefully the next trainer will be better. And no, if a trainer refuses to see their Pokémon is overmatched then that's on them. I've been staying at the Pokémon centre for the last few days and had to watch morons with Pidgeys and Rattatas coming in in critical condition because they stupidly challenged Lt Surge with them."
"So, you don't agree that he's been too harsh on them? Too brutal?" Surge asked.
"Not at all. Some people forget the golden rule of battling. If you win it's the Pokémon that won, if you lose it's because of the trainer." Ash said decisively "if you're stupid enough to send a Pidgey up against an electric type like Lt Surges Raichu then you need to have your trainers licence revoked. Those things can topple elephants with its moves, what do they think having a type disadvantage will do? So no, I believe he's teaching them the right lesson. Battling is serious business and if you're an idiot like they are then you have no business being a trainer. Now, I have a tournament to win. Nice chatting to you Mr" Ash said standing up and walking out to the arena leaving behind a very thoughtful gym leader.
"And now we come to the final. Ash Ketchum vs John Dickson. John has reached the final and used his Dragonair every round, meanwhile Ash has used a different Pokémon each time and demolished his semi-final opponent with one brutal move. This one isn't easy to decide. Trainers, release your Pokémon" and with that John released his Dragonair with a cocky smile. Ash scanned it with his Pokedex "Dragonair, Pokedex Number 148, The Dragon Pokémon, and the evolved form of Dratini. According to a witness, its body was surrounded by a strange aura that gave it a mystical look. It has the ability to change climate conditions."
"You may have beat losers before getting here Ash, but this is where your tournament ends" John said.
"Of course, this is where it ends, moron. This is the final. There are no more battles after this" Ash said shaking his head sadly causing the crowd to laugh. Johns' demeanour changed from cocky to angry in an instant "for that I'll demolish you".
Laughing Ash simply said, "let's go Pi". And Pikachu jumped onto the field. He knew that this would be a different battle than any he had faced before.
"Dragonair, lets finish this quickly. Use Ice Beam" John said.
"Split it with Iron Tail Pi" Ash said in reply and the crowd were amazed that he did just that. Pikachu sent the ice either side of him and charged towards.
"Thunderbolt, half power" Ash said as Pikachu launched a lightning bolt at the Dragonair who lit up.
"Quickly use your own Thunderbolt Dragonair" John shouted shocked. Luckily his Pokémon could hear him and used its move which nullified Pikachu's move. The damage was quite clear to see though on Dragonair as little sparks danced over its skin. Without warning though Dragonair twisted in mid air as a blue aura shone on it, when it stopped it looked refreshed. "Shed Skin" John said cockily. "Now use Dragon Rage" a massive Blue/green ball formed in front of Dragonair who launched it at Pikachu who didn't seem to be able to move out of the way quick enough and was clipped on his side sending him flying. "Agility into Flamethrower Dragonair" as it did a strange dance and became sleeker and faster before launching a flame at Pikachu.
"Thunderbolt to counter Pikachu. This match is over" Pikachu launched a bolt at the Dragonair which went straight through the flame and lit up the dragon Pokémon causing it to screech and halt in place. "Stop Pikachu". Without wondering why, he did so and waited on his next command. Looking over to the referee Ash said "Well?" looking clueless Ash looked over at John and smirked "that was five moves he used in battle".
"Ok?" John said confused "and?"
"Well, if this is an official battle the league rules state that no more than four moves can be used in a battle. You can teach your Pokémon as many as you like but no more than four can be used. You used five. That's an automatic disqualification" Ash said smiling. Immediately the crowd exploded into chatter while the referee looked at the rule book. Looking up at John the referee said "I'm afraid he's right. Dragonair is disqualified from battle. The winner is Ash Ketchum." Immediately John began to protest, but the referee held firm. Rules were rules.
"Shame really" Ash said walking up to John holding out his hand "that was a good battle."
Slapping it away John walked off to his side to sit down fuming. Ash merely shook his head and walked over to his seat.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, after a fabulous day of battles we present to you the winner, Ash Ketchum. In second place we have John Dickson. Give them both a round of applause. Now onto the prizes. To John we present to you a set of 4 evolution stones. Now to Ash, we give you a set of the same stones, a winner's trophy AND two tickets for first class on our very own SS Anne!" at that the crowd exploded into applause. The SS Anne was the most famous liner in the world. It was famed for its opulence. It also attracted trainers and sellers from all over the world, so Ash was really pleased with that. You never know, he might be able to find Pikachu a Light Ball. Muttering so only Ash could hear John said "enjoy it while you can Ketchum, you won on a technicality and we both know it" snorting Ash muttered back "please, its not my fault you can't count. And Pikachu was easily beating you, we hadn't gone past half power with his electricity. If you want another battle, just ask. If not, I suggest you go, train and I'll see you at the league" Ash said walking off leaving a fuming John who swore he'd get revenge.
Looking at his tickets he saw they weren't for another three months. That was plenty of time Ash decided to get Vermillion and Ceruleans badge, travel to the Power Plant and be back here in time for the cruise. Making a decision Ash left his Pokémon with Joy and went to his room to make a call.
Picking up at the second dial Ash saw the face of his mother "Hello Ash" Delia said smiling. What can I do for you?"
"Well to start with I wanted to apologise to you." Holding his hand up to stall her reply he saw her frown. Delia isn't someone you shush "please mum, I need to say this. Ever since I received my mission off Arceus I've been living in a bit of a dream world. Being told you've been created to save the world leaves a bit of an impression on you. And for all I tell my Pokémon I can't abide arrogance I seem to be doing a lot of arrogant things. I knew straight away last night that what you said saw true, every word. However, I can only promise I will try and temper what I say and do with more caution and think things through more. Arceus may have created me, but you gave birth to me, and I'll be eternally grateful to you for being my mother. I love you very much mum."
Smiling tearily Delia said "thank you Ash. It's very difficult being a mother, doubly so when you know you have no say in your child's life because a God has chosen them for greatness. So, thank you for saying that."
"It needed to be said. Now, onto happier things. I won my first tournament" Ash said holding up his trophy.
"Oh, congratulations sweetie!" Delia exclaimed "I'm so proud of you. And your dad would be too".
"Thanks mum. Also, I won a grand prize for finishing first. I was given a set of Evolution Stones and two tickets for the SS Anne!" Ash said happily holding up the tickets.
"Oh wow, the SS Anne" she exclaimed "it is said to be the greatest ship in the world. And its also said to have the best chefs in the world on board too. You'll have to let me know what it's like Ash."
"Mum, I said TWO tickets. You're coming with me" Ash said perplexed "that's one of the reasons I told you."
Delia just gaped in surprise. She had misheard Ash surely "Ash are you sure?"
"Of course, I'm sure mum! As soon as I won them, I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to spend some time together. I know you've missed me; I've missed you too. Plus, like you said the best chefs are on there, you need to put them to shame."
"Oh, shush you" Delia said, "I'll have to find something to wear."
"Well, it's not for another three months yet so you have plenty of time to get here. I have a few places I want to visit beforehand. I'll send the tickets to you via carrier Pidgeot along with my trophy. I need to go now mum. Nurse Joy has just called my name to pick up my Pokémon. I'm challenging Lt Surge tomorrow so I'll let you know how that goes. Bye" Ash said.
"Bye sweetie. Good luck. Love you lots and lots like jelly tots Ash" Delia said hanging up. Shaking his head Ash picked up his Pokémon and spent the rest of the day coming up with a strategy to beat Lt Surge. He knew Raichu would be used so he planned on using Pikachu. The rest of his Pokémon were unknown though.
The next day Ash posted the tickets and his trophy to his mum and walked up to the gym. Opening the door, he had to step back as a trainer came rushing out with a Staryu in his arms. Shaking his head at the stupidness of some people he handed his Pokedex over to the receptionist who wished him good luck. Walking into the arena he saw several trainers milling around training their Pokémon. Lt Surge was clearly doing his job right it seemed as a teacher. Ash knew he would have virtually nothing bad to say about him in his report later. Walking on to the battlefield it lit up and the man from yesterday appeared.
"Well, well" Lt Surge said "it's the boy wonder. I did wonder why I hadn't seen you before yesterday. And given your speech I wondered if I would see you at all."
"I knew who you were" Ash said "and I stand by what I said yesterday. I have a question for you?"
"Go ahead" Lt Surge said.
"Do you ever feel like Natural Selection isn't happening fast enough?" Ash asked.
Laughing Lt Surge answered "at times yeah. Why do you ask?"
"I ask myself the same question most days." Ash replied, "And then I see trainers like the one with the Staryu from before rush past me and I'm left to question that thought process."
"What do you mean?" one of the trainers asked making Lt Surge frown at the rudeness.
"Well, who in their right mind challenges an electric gym, one who's well known to use a Raichu with a Pidgey or a Staryu?" Ash said shaking his head "that level of stupid is ridiculous but sadly seems to be catching given the number of trainers I've seen come into the Pokémon centre this week who have done the exact same thing."
"Why do you think you're any different" asked the same trainer.
"Because I AM different" Ash said looking directly at Lt Surge
"Indeed you are" Lt Surge said quietly "well let's put that to the test shall we. Now, due to you still having rookie status and one badge I can only use my normal team to battle you. I know you can take more but rules are rules. So, this battle will be three on three, the challenger can substitute anytime they want. The winner will be whoever has one Pokémon remaining at the end. Agreed?"
"Agreed" Ash said calling out Eevee. Lt Surge gave him a searching look before calling out a Voltorb. Ash scanned it with Dexter "Voltorb, Pokedex Number 100, The Ball Pokémon. Genderless. Usually found in power plants. Easily mistaken for a Pokeball, they have zapped many people. It will self-destruct with very little stimulus."
"Charge" Lt Surge said, and it began glowing as it gathered energy. Ash had never seen that move but it looked like it was charging its electrical energy. Wondering if Pikachu could do that, he put it to the back of his mind and commanded Eevee to use "Quick Attack". Quicker than Voltorb could react it was sent flying but continued to charge.
"Sonic boom" Lt Surge said as it sent out an eerie sound creating a shockwave that sent Eevee sprawling but quickly rose to her feet.
"At last Eevee, a challenge" Ash said excitedly "Quick Attack into Iron Tail."
"Self-destruct" Lt Surge said causing Ash to gasp. "I know its not perfected yet Eevee but Dig."
"Damn" Lt Surge said as his Voltorb exploded sending dust and debris flying. When it had settled down Eevee was seen to be poking her head out of a hole while Voltorb was out for the count.
"Voltorb is unable to battle, Eevee wins this round" the referee said.
"Good work Eevee" Ash said, "we're really lucky we started to learn that move this week."
"Indeed, you are Ash" Lt Surge said "but it was well thought out. Very few Pokémon can withstand such a blast from such close range. Now for my next Pokémon" as he called out a Magnemite
Ash again scanned it "Magnemite, Pokedex Number 81, The Magnet Pokémon. Genderless. It is born with the ability to defy gravity. It floats in air on powerful electromagnetic waves."
"Let's go Charmander" Ash said calling out the lizard who let flames leak from his mouth. He had decided a week ago that he would try and intimidate his opponent before he fought them and had tried various things. This seemed to work for now. Sadly though as Magnemite was a machine it didn't have the capability to be scared.
"Type Advantage" Lt Surge grunted "this will be tricky.
"Keep your guard up Charmander. These buggers can fire off Thunder Waves anytime they want" Ash said.
"Oh, you've seen these Pokémon before then" Lt Surge asked.
"Yeah" Ash said looking at him "I did a project on them a few years ago. While working for Professor Oak I met a trainer who had a Magneton. I was wondering how they evolve into a Magneton if you don't have three Magnemite. It was tricky to be honest as it's still very much unknown. The closest thing I could come up at the time with was that it literally forces evolution through absorbing all the electronic waves that pass through the air. They're fascinating Pokémon really. They're born when too much electricity passes through a magnetic field and infuses itself into a metal construct. That's why you'll nearly always find them near a power plant. They lose their sense of gravity if they expel too much electricity, and they have to be charged back up before they can float again."
"I knew I'd heard of you before" one of the trainers said "you're Professor Oaks protégé. I read that paper not long ago. It's used in our classes when teaching about electrical output and absorption."
"I only found out not long ago that Sam had published a lot of my papers" Ash said laughing "anyway we're here to battle. Charmander get in close but keep on your toes."
"Thunder Wave" Lt Surge said not missing a beat "then Sonic Boom."
"Metal Claw that electrical energy into the ground and use Ember on that sonic boom" Ash said as Charmander did just that throwing them both back several feet with the sound wave. "Now Ember again" before Magnemite could respond it became coated in flames and screeched causing everyone to cover their ears.
"Move out of the way and use Thunderbolt" Lt Surge said.
"Ember again but move closer as you're doing so. I want you within five feet of it Charmander. We've trained for this with Pikachu" Charmander did just that keeping up a steady stream of fire and inching forward causing the pressure around them both to rise. Sparks of electricity sparked around Charmander while flecks of fire coated Magnemite. As soon as he was at the distance Ash wanted, he called out "Now, Brick Break" and Charmander leapt out of the way of the Thunderbolt where it impacted the ground harmlessly and hit it in the centre causing it to groan and smash into the ground where it was seen to be fainted.
"Magnemite is unable to battle. Charmander wins" the referee said.
"Great job Charmander. All that training with Pikachu has certainly paid off." Ash said cheering and recalling Charmander.
"Well done kid." Lt Surge "Now I have something different in mind for the last challenge. I overheard a conversation after your second battle yesterday about losing to Brocks elite. So, I rang Brock and asked him what happened. He told me this tale of how a kid with just a Pikachu walked into his Rock type gym and demolished two of his Pokémon, with just that little electric mouse. Now as you can imagine I found that hard to believe so he sent me the recording of it and lo and behold it was you and your Pikachu. I cannot tell you how proud of you I am kid" seeing Ash's confused face he continued "you have made a Rock type gym leader fear the electric type. For that you will always have our respect. So, for the last challenge I have something different in mind. My students here around me are probably wondering I didn't stomp you with just Raichu like I have with everyone else. Well, the answer is simple. I want to test my Raichu against your Pikachu. But not in a battle." He said shocking them all "I want to test your Pikachu in a battle of voltage. You told me yesterday that your Pikachu has dreams of putting Raichu's to shame. And I saw its output in your last two battles of the tournament. So, what say you, Ash?"
"I'm confused about how I win the badge" Ash replied after a few seconds of thinking "if I don't beat your Raichu in a battle how do I win the badge?"
"Oh, you've already won the badge. Beating Brock with Pikachu was enough for that. Plus, your words and ethics are exactly what the message my gym has. Choose your battles wisely, for they may be your last. I was in a war kid; electric type Pokémon saved my life. And to see these kids walk in here with a Pidgey, uncaring about their Pokémons wellbeing chills my piss. You know better. So, you win the badge. This is just to see how much further your Pikachu has to go to match my Raichu."
Looking at each other Pikachu nodded and walked onto the battlefield. "Now remember Pikachu, we'll likely be amping up the voltage. Stop when you feel unable to go any further. This is not a fight. This is a test. We're ready Lt Surge."
"Good" Lt Surge said sending out Raichu who stopped the taunting he usually did straight away. "So, you're the Pikachu my master told me about? The one who put fear into rock and ground types. I am very pleased to meet you. You don't look that strong, but then again appearance can be deceiving. So, are you ready for the test?" gaining a nod he began with a low powered Thundershock which Pikachu easily matched.
"Ramp it up Raichu" Lt Surge shouted. Ash shouted the same to Pikachu and they proceeded to do just that. A few minutes later they both stopped panting a little. "Your Pikachu's electricity is very impressive. What's the strongest electrical move it knows?"
"At the minute Thunderbolt. It's getting nearer Thunder level, but I don't think were quite there just yet." Ash said, "We've only been training together for about three months."
Silence rang out "three months?" Lt Surge asked surprised looking at Pikachu impressed "he's giving off enough output to suggest at least nine. Very well. I'm going to have Raichu use a half power Thunder. Match it the best you can" gaining a nod he watched as Raichu unleashed its strongest attack and Pikachu try to match which surprisingly he did. "75% Raichu" Lt Surge shouted, and the air became very humid as the two fought for dominance. Pikachu suddenly buckled under the strain and Ash called an end to it. Rushing onto the field Ash was very careful when approaching. All his hair was standing on end, and it was lucky he was wearing his insulated gloves he had bought when he received Pikachu. Waiting for the air to calm down took a long time.
"Now that was bloody impressive" Lt Surge said walking over to them both "Your Pikachu will easily outstrip my Raichu in terms of power." Raichu looked a bit downhearted, and Lt Surge laughed "don't be so down Raichu. Think of this as a moment in time and when Pikachu becomes famous you can proudly say you helped gauge his power. Here Ash. The Thunderbadge as promised" he said holding out the badge. Taking it, he looked it over and placed it inside his badge case "now normally I would hand out a Thunderbolt TM to Rookies or a Thunder TM to who beat my elites, but I suspect you won't catch another electric type. For now, I'll hold onto them but if you need them for a future Pokémon just send me a message and I'll send them to you. Farewell Ash, I suggest you take Pikachu to the Pokémon Centre for a well-earned rest."
Shaking his hand Ash proceeded to do just that. Calling his mum, he told her about his battle and what happened. She was overjoyed that he had such a strong Pokémon who could look after him. Deciding to get an early night he retrieved Pikachu from the Nurse and went to bed. Tomorrow would be busy.
