Northstar Pokeshipper- I have done that in the past with my last story. There was outrage because I made my lead character Gay despite there being no love interest. There were so many DMs from anonymous readers expressing outrage because he wasn't gay in canon. I deleted so many that in the end I just gave up because of anonymous reviewing.

To the other Guest, your review was very welcomed. Thank you for it.

Thank you all for your reviews. Means a lot.

Chapter 15- Saffron

Ringing up his mother the next morning he gave her the good news about what happened. She was a little concerned about what happened but understood that while he helped lead people out of the city they still acted of their own free will, and it was Silph who evicted Sabrina. She was a little concerned about retribution from them, they didn't need to use psychic powers to hurt someone.

"Mum, they don't think like that" Ash said "they've been using psychic power for so long now that they virtually do nothing by hand. They're very arrogant about that. Sabrina herself proved that. Rather than try and talk people into returning to the city her immediate reaction was to try and take over the little girl's mind and control her that way. Their arrogance is their undoing."

"Well just make sure yours is not your own undoing Ash" Delia said still worried.

"I won't mum" Ash said smiling "I know I have you and my team to stop that. I've been thinking situations through more since the incident at Power Plant. I didn't plan on ousting Sabrina yesterday. I just gave people the option of deciding for themselves and they took it."

"I know Ash" Delia replied sighing looking away.

"What's wrong mum?" Ash asked "I know that face. That's your 'I have something to tell you that you're probably not going to like' face."

"I have a face like that?" Delia asked surprised.

"Yes" Ash said "you know of the issues I faced growing up, and you know how single minded I am to the point of stubbornness. I heard the phrase 'come to terms with it, it's happening' so many times from you that I learned to recognise what those looks from you meant. Now, what's wrong?"

Sighing Delia took a big breath "Sam came round last night. He received an email off someone asking us for a way to get us both around a table with a representative of theirs to collaborate on an issue going forward."

Looking confused Ash looked off to the side before his brain clicked "No, mum. There's only one person, or people that we don't actively engage with in conversation. I told you of them waylaying me at Mt Moon. I sent you the recording of what was said. And I meant every word mum. You did a wonderful job of raising me, and I am damn proud to be able to call you my mum. But I will never serve that pretentious woman as long as I live. That's why you weren't surprised by what I told you." He finished nodding to himself.

"Thank you for that" Delia said smiling "I'm proud to call you my son too Ash. But this wasn't an offer of servitude. It was an offer to work together, as a partnership."

"Mum, you know full well that what they say and what they mean are two different things" Ash said.

"Yes Ash" his mum said archly "I don't need you to remind me of what that woman is capable of." After a 'sorry' she carried on "but what you did yesterday changed the game, Ash. You removed the psychic influence Saffron has been under for centuries without even trying. Do you have any idea how many aura users have tried that in the past? Not only that but you told the population about your book on protecting themselves. The president of Silph himself has asked his son to look out for you tomorrow when you go to the conventions. I received that email last night too. I've had all morning to think about why they want to open talks and I can only come up with one reason why they'd want to reach out. You've made them obsolete."

"What do you mean?" Ash asked confused.

"I didn't think you'd realise just what you'd done Ash" Delia said shaking her head smiling "by teaching everyone Aura with your books they become obsolete. They're not special anymore Ash. For centuries they've stayed relevant because they alone were trained to use this mystical power they called Aura. It's well known that they limit just who they train so if a person is chosen it's a massive deal. They used their win in the war to enhance that mystique and the people for centuries have lapped that up. Now, through you, they're no longer special. If everyone can use aura, then why would Rota and their Queen be relevant anymore? So, the only way they can stay relevant is by piggybacking onto the person that made them irrelevant's fame; you. They need you or they become just another town that uses aura, like every other town is going to become."

"Ah right" Ash said "yeah, I can see that. All I wanted to do was open people's minds in Saffron. I was going to challenge Sabrina, beat her and then leave as soon as I could."

"I know Ash" Delia said "but this is another one of those situations where the consequences of your actions have taken over. Now this time I'm not going to shout at you about thinking things through. Mainly because of what you just said. I know you wanted to be in Vermillion in a few days and if you'd have planned this it would likely have taken longer than it did. I'm going to chalk this one up as dumb luck."

"That's what I've done" Ash said laughing before turning serious "so what should I do mum? I really don't want to work with them or be near them in any way."

"Then you don't have to" Delia said "if you don't want to. You're in no way obligated to do anything Ash."

"What do you want to do mum?" Ash said after a few moments of silence "this is just as much your fight as mine."

"I have no idea Ash" Delia said "there's very few people in this world I detest. Ilene is number two behind the entirety of Team Rocket because of what she tried to do. I think I'm going to speak to my lawyers first, that way if a meeting is set up, we have a list of demands or requests that we don't deviate from. We know that negotiation takes place but there's some things we don't have to compromise on."

"Like a Ketchum ever becoming a servant of the Monarch of Rota or Cameron Palace" Ash said thinking out loud "or placing Lucario all over Kanto to spy on me."

"Those are two of them yes" Delia said "wait, they're following you around Kanto?"

"Yeah" Ash said "they have been since Mt Moon. How do you think they knew about what happened in Saffron so quickly? I guarantee that if I leave Saffron, I could sense one in the distance keeping tabs on me. Don't forget mum they've been trying to get me as a servant since dad disappeared. Ilene nearly fulfilled her ancestors wishes with Dad, when that went wrong, I was next. That was until you sued them and then warned me of what they wanted."

"Those absolute bastards" Delia said angrily "well you can be sure that my lawyers will be in touch about this whole thing. I'll be sure to let them know my list of demands. If you think of anything else let me know."

"To be honest mum I'm not sure I even want to entertain them in any way" Ash said, "when my book comes out it makes them worthless, in what way does that benefit us?"

"I'm not sure Ash" Delia said, "but if this guarantees they leave us alone, I'd give it some serious thought."

"Ok mum" Ash said "we don't have a time limit, do we? Because this decision could be made after the cruise. Let them sweat it out and reflect on the future."

"That may be a better decision" Delia said nodding "I'll let my lawyers know and then get back to you. Now, what's your plans for today?"

"I'm going to go to the convention today and then the gym tomorrow." Ash said, "The Dojo master was only likely told last night so I'll give him a day to get settled before destroying his team."

Laughing they continued with their small talk for another ten minutes before Ash hung up. Standing up he decided to go to Silph and see some of the conventions that were happening. Ash was particularly interested in the 'new technology' stall that was there. He had taken the black box apart last night and found it was just a simple transmitter. He doubted he would find where the master receiver was, but he knew that if it was turned on again it would turn green, so he kept it with him. It would be a forewarning more than anything else.

Walking into Silph Ash was amazed at its opulence. Its screamed 'wealth' which wasn't surprising really given who owned it. The president was widely regarded as the wealthiest man in the world, and all the technology he created increased that wealth by the minute. Walking around the stalls he picked up various items that he thought could help with travelling. He bought himself a retractable rope with a hook on the end for in case he gets stuck on a cliff, he had his set of weights updated, they could now weigh more than before which was needed considering his Pokémon were going to be much bigger in the future and he bought his mum some dragon-scale gloves for her gardening. It was when he was walking past another exhibit that he had to stop and stare in surprise. There was merchandise of his dad as an action figure complete with a little Pikachu. Walking over he wondered just who had authorised that.

"Hey" Ash said drawing the attention of the vendor "who gave you authorisation to sell figures of my dad?"

"Please" the vendor said sneering "Red didn't have any children."

"Erm, yes he did" Ash said vehemently "I'm his child! Now I'll ask again, who the hell gave you permission to sell figurines of my father? Because it certainly wasn't my mother, his wife!"

"You have no proof you're Red's son" the man said nervously.

"I'm wearing his bloody hat! It was one of a kind. Not only that but my name is Ash Ketchum" Ash said shouting. His voice had attracted several members of the public to stare at the scene being caused. Ash wasn't surprised when security came over and asked what was going on.

"What's going on is this vendor is selling figurines of my father without authorisation." Ash said staring the vendor down "not only that but he then accused me of lying about Red Ketchum being my dad!"

"Ok sir" the guard asked, "do you have any proof you're his son?"

"Yes, I do" Ash said pulling out his Pokedex and showing them his ID "Ketchum is not a common name, not only that but I'm wearing his signature cap. Do you need me to ring Professor Oak to verify it?"

"Mr Ketchum" a voice said making them all turn around as Hatori Suzuki walked through the gathered crowd "Thank you again for your service to Saffron yesterday. Now, what seems to be the problem?"

"Hello again Mr Suzuki" Ash said "this man is selling figurines of my dad without either myself or my mother authorising them. He then accused me of lying about being Red's son. The guards were just asking me for proof of who I am too."

"They are doing their job Mr Ketchum" Hatori said.

"I am aware of that Mr Suzuki" Ash said, "my grievance is not with them."

"I am allowed to sell whatever I want" the vendor said, "I received permission by going through all the right channels."

"Of selling Elite Four and current Champion merchandise Mr Funaki, authorised by the Pokémon League" Hatori said "Red has not been authorised by the League or his family to have merchandise created or sold since his death eleven years ago. Everything was pulled that concerned him. Now if you want to continue selling here, I suggest that you box everything of Red and put them away. You have my apologies Mr Ketchum. Now I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time?"

"Of course," Ash said walking away with Hatori giving the vendor one last glare "I have only one convention to go to anyway, which is the one I am here for."

"Oh? Which one?" Hatori asked.

"The new releases and technology advances one" Ash said smiling "I'm a bit of a geek, and I was told there was a big announcement being broadcast today so that should be interesting."

"Indeed, it is Mr Ketchum" Hatori said proudly "It is a gamechanger in the world of catching Pokémon. Instead of the convention how would you like to meet the people behind it who can give you a more detailed overview of it?"

"Well, I don't know what 'it' is" Ash said following Hatori to an elevator. Using a pass Hatori took them up to the eighteenth floor. The elevator door opened to a hub of activity. Scientists were rushing around in and out of their booths to show other bits and pieces of technology to each other.

"We prefer giving the staff here free rein to do what they want" Hatori said as they made their way through the staff "we find it is fantastic for creativity and collaboration" as they got to the end though Ash saw a door with a keypad, hand scanner and a retina scan. "This Mr Ketchum is where all our most secret ideas are held. Only those with authorisation are allowed in but I did promise you a show did I not?" he finished smirking. Walking over to the keypad he put in a code and then used the retina and hand scan at the same time. Whatever was inside Ash mused must be incredible. As it opened Ash waited with bated breath and then let out a sigh of disappointment. Inside was a single pedestal with a glass case holding some kind of spherical object. Walking up to it Ash observed it looked like a fancy pokeball, gilded in purple with gold trimming and a big with letter M on it.

After removing the security bars around the case Hatori cautiously lifted the glass lid and reverently took hold of the ball and held it up. "Behold Mr Ketchum. The greatest invention Silph has ever made. If I asked you what it was what would you say?"

"It looks like a Pokeball" Ash said walking closer to observe it.

"It is Mr Ketchum" Hatori said whispering looking at him "but it is so much more than that. What you see here Mr Ketchum is years of trial and error, millions of dollars spent on research and the collaboration of the finest minds in Kanto. I give you Mr Ketchum…The Masterball."

"The Masterball?" Ash asked perplexed.

"I see you fail to see its significance. But that's not surprising Mr Ketchum" Hatori said placing it back on the pedestal and replacing the glass. Immediately as it did so the panels were secured by metal rods going through the glass. "It is the greatest Pokeball ever invented Mr Ketchum" Hatori said leading them back out of the vault "it will catch any Pokémon without fail. Just think Mr Ketchum, you see a Pokémon you want, and just catch it. No battles needed; no Pokémon are hurt. Just an instant catch. It's untested on Legendaries though at the minute. Mainly because they're so elusive but it's a 100% guaranteed catch on all other Pokémon. Isn't that wonderful?"

Ash thought it was anything but wonderful but agreed simply because he didn't want to cause an argument in a place he was vastly outnumbered. He still needed Mr Suzuki after all. He had a lot of power in the Pokémon world, evidenced by the eviction of Sabrina in a single night. Ash suddenly felt very claustrophobic in a room full of scientists looking at him and Hatori talking about something that had taken them years to invent. Deciding on a much safer topic Ash pulled out the little black box and was about to ask Hatori about it when a scientist rushed over to him and grabbed it out of his hand and rushed to his cubicle where he began taking it apart.

"Hey!" Ash exclaimed rushing after him "what the hell do you think you're doing?"

"Easy there, Ash" Hatori said laying a hand on his shoulder "they're always like this, especially with each other. We've kind of gotten used to it. Now, Edgar" he said turning to the scientist who was currently taking apart the black box "what was that about?"

"This is fantastic" Edgar said seemingly ignoring the question "come, come. Look here at this! Whoever did this knew what they were doing. Where did you get this?"

"I took it from the top of Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town" Ash said "It was attached to an antenna that was being used to control the population of the town. Someone had fitted this and was using a Spiritomb as a conduit to give the town insomnia. For the last three months the town's population have been like zombies. But when I beat the Spiritomb the antenna was destroyed in the battle so I couldn't trace where the master transceiver was. I took that apart myself last night but found nothing that could give me any clue. I put it back together because I know the next time the Master is used that will switch back on and I can hopefully get a jump on its location."

"That's ingenious" Edgar said after processing the information "this little box is able to do all that. You're correct that without the antenna its essentially useless. But you see these little parts here?" he asked pointing to a wire and a coil "these are exclusive to Silph Towers. Only we make these parts. They're used in the Pokegear and Pokedex. So, whoever made this works here."

"Could you find out who?" Ash asked urgently.

"Sadly not" Edgar said shaking his head "every single person in this lab and the one above has access to these parts on a daily basis. And as they're so common up here it would be easy to make a few go 'missing' and not be noticed."

"Damn" Ash said picking it back up "thank you anyway."

"Is it important Ash?" Hatori asked as they walked away.

"Yes, is there somewhere private we could talk?" Ash asked.

"Actually yes, my father wants to meet you. His office is secure. I shall lead the way" Hatori said as he used his swipe card on the lift and went to the very top floor. Exiting Ash followed the corridor where Hatori opened the big doors at the end. The office screamed 'Wealth' and 'Taste'. Its furniture was likely more expensive than anything Ash had ever wanted to buy. Seated at the end behind a massive mahogany desk was the President of Silph. Standing up he came to greet them. He was a small man, wearing a monocle, had a pencil moustache and was dressed immaculately. Shaking Ash's hand with both of his he greeted them both and bade them sit down. After greetings Hatori asked Ash again about the box.

"I suspect that Team Rocket is behind it" Ash said shocking them both "this is strictly off the record, and should anyone ask, I will refuse to admit this conversation took place but over the last four or so months there have been many incidents that involved a newly resurrected Team Rocket. The last time I saw them in person was at Power Plant, yes it was them, not scientists who attacked Zapdos. Then a week later I'm in Lavender town and they had built an antenna on top of Pokémon Tower and had them all under a thrall. It was only because of a battle I had with Spiritomb that the antenna was destroyed, and everything went back to normal.

I'm concerned about your Masterball. You've made it public. And in doing so they will do everything they can to get hold of something like that. I suggest you improve your security or move it to somewhere only you two know. Trust me on this please. A ball that can potentially catch Legendaries? That's not something they can afford to turn down."

"That is troubling Ash" Hatori said "very troubling. It will have to be moved father."

"Indeed, it will" the man said stroking his moustache "we will both do it tonight and tell no one about it. It's not strange to see us stay behind after hours."

"I'm glad" Ash said, "I didn't think you'd take me seriously."

"We trusted you yesterday Ash" Hatori said "and you were right then. We'll trust you once more."

"Thank you" Ash said very relieved "I was told by my mother that you wanted to speak to me?"

"Yes" the president said taking over "I wanted to thank you personally for saving my son and granddaughter, without you we would have never known and been under Sabrina's thrall forever-more. I was informed that you're on the gym challenge, so I thought I'd give you the update on that personally too. As of right now Sabrina is holed up in her gym pending an investigation into coercion. She better hope that is all it is. The Karate Master was informed this morning that his gym license has been updated to be one of the eight official Pokémon League registered gyms. His gym is closed for today so he can get everything set up for official battles. All he's been able to do for the last few years is have spars, but not give out a badge. That has now changed. My son also told me that you are releasing a book to help people control their minds and resist external influences?"

"Yes" Ash replied "in a manner of speaking anyway. It's a book on Aura and how to access your inner aura for those who have been unable to do so. It's more a book on meditation but I list several techniques for closing your minds off to psychics. I want to make it clear though that it's not a guaranteed thing. Some people will be unable to access their full aura, for various reasons but I cannot see why people can't learn the basics, even if its just to develop a warning system that someone is trying to access their minds."

"Well, that sounds very beneficial" the President said "I can see that flying off the shelf when it is released, which leads me to my next proposition. Silph would like the exclusive rights to produce the book."

"No, sorry" Ash said shaking his head shocking them "I plan on giving it away to people for nothing. It's important that people learn to protect themselves and I have no need of more money than I already have. I'm aware I could probably make a small fortune on it, but I always knew this book would need to be free."

"Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed" the President said "but it is your book. Do you plan on doing book signings?"

"Maybe in the future. I'm not famous enough to be doing those at the moment." Ash said laughing "In about eighteen months' time I will be though when I become Kanto Champion."

"Then we will likely be having another conversation like this then" the President said cheerfully "for now though all we can do is wish you well, and should you need anything please don't hesitate to give us a call. Hatori, I have a meeting in half an hour so I'm afraid that this conversation will have to come to an end. Could you please escort Mr Ketchum out and then return here? I thank you again Mr Ketchum" the President said standing up and offering his hand.

"It was a pleasure to meet you" Ash said "if you need to contact me here's my pokegear number, failing that contact my mother and she'll inform me. Thank you for the tour" standing up they left via the elevator and shaking hands left each other at the front door. Ash headed to the Pokémon centre while Hatori made the journey back to his father's office.

"You said there was a meeting due soon father? I'm unaware of one that was scheduled" Hatori said questioningly.

"There isn't one, its between you and I" the President said standing up and walking to his window that overlooked Saffron City "what is your opinion of Mr Ketchum? Full disclosure Hatori"

"He's a very driven." Hatori began "He's arrogant, knowledgeable, clever, tough and very direct. He's also very well connected. He reminds me of you father to be honest. You need to have a certain ruthlessness to be able to build the empire you have, and he is certainly ruthless. I did some digging last night and his past four months have been a whirlwind of crazy situations. He had the Cerulean Gym leaders fired for not doing their job, stopped a Zapdos on a rampage, freed Lavender Town from being oppressed and then a week later did the same for us in Saffron. Not only that he's apparently halted Team Rocket operations in a few places like Viridian City and Power Plant. He's a catalyst for change. And in the next eighteen months I can guarantee he will shake more situations up and come out smiling. He has a destiny that will outshine us all I believe."

"Mr Ketchum needs to be thanked for what he's done for us." the President said nodding as he sat down "The information regarding Team Rocket is of immense concern. They have tried to gain Silph in the past, but I rebuffed them. They then tried to send people to intimidate me but again I rebuffed them. If Mr Ketchum is set on taking them out, we should aid him however we can, covertly of course. At the minute though I have no idea how."

"I was thinking about that" Hatori said "what if we sponsored him? Endorsed him and gave him first access to new inventions. Or paid for the book to be published and distributed from Silph?"

"Can we trust him that much?" the President asked. "The book option is more the direction I was thinking of."

"I believe so yes" Hatori replied "he had no reason to tell us everything he did. And with him it certainly wasn't the loose lips of youth. He seems to want us all to be prepared for something big to come. And for the sake of my daughter, I will be forever thankful."

"Then we are in agreement." the President said nodding his head "we owe Mr Ketchum. And instead of trying to work behind the scenes, we work with him in full view. He doesn't seem to be the type that appreciates subterfuge. So, if we openly offer what we can, maybe in years to come his name being associated with us will be enough of a deterrent to groups like Rocket. At the minute though he's still only eleven years old. So, we play the long game. I shall email his mother personally explaining our offer. Hopefully we can have a long and lasting partnership."

"We are in agreement father" Hatori said smiling "he didn't seem to be too enthusiastic about the Masterball though. I wonder why that is."

"He's a Pokémon trainer Hatori" the President said laughing "one of the biggest thrills they have is when they throw the ball and hopes it catches their intended target and the possibility it fails. The Masterball removes that option. I am still very proud of it though. I'm still clueless on where to store it though when we move it tonight."

"Something to think over for the next few hours then" Hatori said.

Elsewhere Ash was on the videophone to Professor Oak and his mum that night talking about that very same item.

"I don't like it professor. It takes away everything we trainers live for. To be able to catch a Pokémon, without battling it or earning its respect in battle goes against the trainer's code" Ash said shaking his head "nothing good can come of this professor."

"I agree Ash" Sam said, "I was at that convention, and it seems like a worrying concept. It was a shame we missed each other but the behind-the-scenes tour of Silph must have been very exciting for you."

"It was until he showed me the actual Masterball" Ash said ruefully.

"It's actually real?" Sam said leaning forward "they've actually made it?"

"Oh, it's real professor" Ash said "it looks exactly like a normal pokeball except its purple and gold. It's also under about three layers of security at the moment but yes, it exists."

"That is very worrying Ash" Sam said shaking his head "they made it seem like it was a concept piece during their Q&A session. But to have actually made it? They plan on giving the next League Champion one as a prize."

"It's worse than that professor" Ash said "the biggest issue I see with it concerns Legendary Pokémon. If someone gets the bright idea to test it on one and it works, then they're in serious danger. You and I know how important they are to the balance of the world and it's ecosystem professor. To put that in danger simply to make money is abhorrent."

"Well maybe you can use your influence over them to halt it Ash" Delia said.

"What influence?" Ash asked confused.

"I received an email from the President of Silph a few hours ago. They've sent over a contract along with a description of what they're offering you in return" Delia said.

"Mum, I'm still confused. They didn't offer me anything" Ash said.

"Actually, Ash they did." Delia said holding up a piece of paper so they could all see it "You just probably didn't know they did. They're offering to publish your Aura book for free, and further endorse any other books you sell in the future as a thank you for saving them. Not only that but in the future, they want to collaborate with you on technology, books, ideas etc. Anything and everything really. They want to endorse you Ash because they see you as the next big thing, and the want to put their hat in the ring before a bidding war has even started."

"A bidding war?" Ash said shaking his head "Mum, I'm eleven years old."

"Yes, but you won't be forever Ash" Sam said "you've told everyone you know that you will be the future Champion. I've heard from every member of the Elite Four about how impressed they are with your progress and actions. My son, although he naturally favours Gary is worried. He won't come out and say it, but we all know you will be challenging him soon for his position. And even he knows you're a better trainer than my grandson. And as much as it pains me to say it, I believe it too. Gary has been spoiled his entire life by my son and had everything handed to him. That's not his fault but it is what it is. He is gifted, but he is also naïve and arrogant. You however have worked hard for everything you have gained so far. In my nearly forty years of being a Pokémon professor you're the only person I have ever endorsed at such a young age. There's a reason for that Ash. There's something about you that draws people in.

So, it's really not a surprise that Silph are trying to sponsor you before anyone else can enter the market. You will be a voice for people very soon, you plan to become Champion and given what you've told us of your journey and progress so far, I have very few doubts you will achieve that goal. I only doubt the timeframe." Holding his hand up to stall any of their protests he continued "there has never been a thirteen-year-old Champion Ash. Never. And the Pokémon League will never endorse a Champion younger than eighteen. You're just not mature enough in their eyes to be able to cope with the demands a Champion has. Now that's not to say you can't become Champion, but should you beat Blue before you're eighteen he will stay on in that position until you reach the right age and will train you up in that position. Your father beat Blue at age sixteen who beat the previous Champion Lance at the same age after trying to beat him for several years. But neither of them was allowed to be champion for another few years.

Your father reaching Master status at age 21 was unheard of Ash. Cynthia became champion at 23 which is third behind your father and Blue. That should tell you how difficult becoming a Champion actually is. Now, back to Silph and their offer. You have a destiny Ash, that much is evident. To do what you've done in the world of academics and Pokémon training at such a young age is unprecedented. Silph wanting to sponsor you is a fantastic offer, I doubt you will receive a better one. So, I suggest you talk with your mother about it. It's a great opportunity. Have they given a deadline Delia?"

"No" she replied "not to sign it, but they did say that they would prefer an answer before the league starts, just so they can start producing Merchandise as soon as Ash wins it. Their words by the way. So, we have several months to think it over. I'm going to run it by my lawyers before I leave for Vermillion. Hopefully they can give me more information".

"That's very wise Delia" Sam said smiling "I have to go now but think about what I said Ash. The league isn't going to change their laws just to suit you. There's method in their rationality. Let me know what you all decide. I'll have a word with Blue and Charles about this Masterball. No good can come of it." And with that he hung up leaving mum and son to talk for the next hour about the information they had just received. Hanging up that night Ash went to bed with a very full head.

The next day Ash made his way to the Fighting Dojo. Passing by Sabrina's gym along the way Ash was amused to see it closed. Walking further along the path he was about to enter the Dojo when he suddenly stopped as he felt a presence behind him. Shaking his head, he turned around to see Sabrina and her Alakazam. She wasn't alone though. Lucian was there too looking very angry with a big bell like Pokémon behind him.

"Hey guys" Ash said cheerfully "are you guys leaving? Shame really. I was looking forward to getting to know you two."

"Do you have any idea what you've done thing?" Lucian said angrily advancing on him.

"Yes, I do" Ash said looking between them "I believe I have evened the playing field between us all. For too long now, your kind has been allowed to roam free, unchecked while Aura users dwindled. That has now changed."

"You have forced me from my home" Sabrina said stepping forward "I did nothing to you."

"You exist" Ash replied "when you shouldn't. I don't know how you sleep at night, knowing you were about to manipulate an eight-year-old childs brain just to serve your own ambitions. You personally proved to the entire city that you are this generations Malokei."

Looking as if she'd been slapped Ash carried on "I did nothing but let people make up their own minds, while you tried to control them. I didn't try to control anyone, you did. I have a mantra that my mother taught me, and I have been living by for the last six years. It called 'your actions have consequences' and now you suffer the consequences of your own actions. Do not blame me for your own inadequacies. Now, I have a gym battle to fight. If you still need me, I'm sure you can find me."

Turning his back on them he walked into the dojo. Handing his Pokedex to the receptionist he waited until he was called. When he was called, he entered the gym proper and was amazed to see several people training and sparring with their own Pokémon, weights and punching bags dotted around the place as well as several workout areas. It was exactly what he used to do with the Lucario. He realised that at some point he needed to get a fighting Pokémon to keep up his workouts. Sadly, none of his Pokémon could spar with him properly. He'd been relying on Pikachu and Charmeleon, but they weren't ideal. Sending out an Aura pulse to gauge the situation Ash received one back. Immediately he was on edge.

"Guard up Pi" Ash said making his way to the front of the gym "we have unwelcomed guests."

"That's hardly fair, is it ash?" Riley said stepping forward smiling. At the side of him was a huge, muscled man wearing a Karate Gi. The man's belt was black which told Ash all he needed to know about him.

"Well, I've often thought you lot would be quicker in my grave than I would be Riley" Ash said sarcastically "what are you doing here?"

"I am here to meet the with the Karate Master Richard. The Queen is hoping to re-establish our previous alliance with the fighting gym of Saffron now the abominations have been put in their place" Riley said smiling.

Turning to Richard Ash said, "get it in writing, have it looked over by your lawyers and make sure everything is outlined clearly with no room for interpretation or they'll take a mile with you along with your soul."

"Now there's no need for that Ash." Riley said offended "we honour our word when it is given."

"You throw that word honour around whenever it suits your needs Riley, and you know it" Ash said snorting "when was the last time you did anything considered honourable? I'd wager it was over six years ago before you attacked me at the request of your Queen".

"Is that so?" Richard asked giving him a pointed look.

By now a crowd had gathered around them listening in and at the last statement mutter could be heard as well as suspicious and angry looks.

"I have told you Ash, Queen Ilene did not order me to attack you." Riley said frustrated giving Richard a wary look "and we more than paid for the accidental damage we caused to you and your family."

"Oh, so you did it off your own back then? Please, as I said when you waylaid me at Mt Moon you don't wipe your own arse without her telling you that you can" Ash said snorting "Aura Guardians are never in a place by accident. And Aura Guardians don't need to hold a child's hand to see if they have the gift, they can sense it as soon as they're near them. No, what you did was deliberately planned. As far as I'm concerned the Aura Guardians and Ilene lost any honour and respect I may have eventually had for them that day.

Now you're lucky that my mother has mellowed enough to entertain your Queens request. We're going on holiday for a few weeks soon and we're going to discuss your proposition then. We'll deal with you through safe channels, meetings with lawyers etc. under no circumstances will we come to Rota or the Palace to discuss anything. I will never endanger my mother by putting her in the very place that would see her dead. You can take that back to Ilene." Turning to Richard he said "Now, Sir. I am here for my badge. Shall we?"

Giving both Ash and Riley a searching look he grunted and said "yes, follow me. I should like to hear more about your conversation as it's deeply concerning that an Aura Guardian would attack a child. But there are two sides to every story, and I won't judge until I've heard both. For now, though we'll battle. I'm afraid I haven't had time to plan for a serious challenge, we don't really have a motto yet but what we do have here in Saffron Dojo is an unbreakable bond with our partners. This will be a two-on-two battle with no substitutions from either side. We fight until we drop here, and we go down with honour."

"You hear that Pi" Ash asked Pikachu "we may actually lose a battle!"

"What do you mean? You actually want to lose?" a man dressed up in a Gi said from the side with a Machoke behind him as he walked into the referee's box.

"Well, no, we don't want to lose." Ash replied "We're certainly not going to throw a fight if that's what you're thinking. But I've been involved in over 350 battles now and we have yet to lose one. You learn from your losses, but that hasn't happened. All we seem to have done lately is give others that chance to learn. So hopefully we can see areas we need to improve on here."

"That's very impressive Ash" Richard said as he took his position in his box. "Referee?"

"This fight will be a two-on-two fight with no substitutions from either side allowed." The ref stated "The winner will be the one who has a Pokémon standing at the end. On one side we have the Karate Master Richard, on the other side is the challenger Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town. Let the battle begin."

"Hitmonlee, you're up" Richard said as he released a Pokémon that was around 5 feet tall that looked like it had slinkies for legs. Pointing his Pokedex at it Dexter bleeped to life

"Hitmonlee, Pokedex Number 106, The kicking Pokémon, and the evolved form of Tyrogue. This Pokémon is male. This amazing Pokémon has an awesome sense of balance. It can kick in succession from any position."

"Wow. I remember seeing Bruno's on TV and that was impressive. I've been looking forward to battling one of these. Let's go Charmeleon. Now Charmeleon, this is a battle until you drop. You won't be recalled until you're down or they are. Do your best. Let's get in close, use Slash."

"Dodge Hitmonlee" Richard said.

Charmeleon charged towards the Hitmonlee who pivoted out of the way. Charmeleon kept on trying to land a hit but was unsuccessful. It soon began to get angry until Ash shouted "Focus Charmeleon. It's trying to get you angry and tired. This is where all those cardio training sessions will come into play. As soon as you get an opening use Slash and Fire Fang."

"That's enough Hitmonlee, stop playing around now. We've had a good warm up, use Counter followed by Rolling Kick" Hitmonlee moved with a grace Ash had never seen before and in two hits sent Charmeleon flying where he crashed into the ground. Standing up Charmeleon shook itself off and got into his defensive stance.

"That's a very nice Pokémon you have there, Ash. Not many Pokémon can take Hitmonlee's attacks like that" Richard said looking at the action "Hitmonlee, use Jump Kick."

Without waiting Hitmonlee launched itself into the air and headed towards Charmeleon. Quickly rolling out of the way Charmeleon sprang back up and slashed its back sending it stumbling forward. "Quickly Charmeleon use Slash again" doing so Charmeleon charged forwards and slashed Hitmonlee's back making it cry out in agony as it leapt away to Richards side where it landed and went down to one knee wincing.

"Dragon Claw Charmeleon. Get in close again." Ash shouted.

"Charge and use Jump Kick Hitmonlee" Richard responded.

Both of the charged at each other and landed their attacks sending them both flying back where they lay on their backs panting. After thirty seconds Charmeleon and Hitmonlee slowly got back to their feet, clearly exhausted. Ash and Richard both had a feeling that one more attack would win them the battle.

"Close Combat Hitmonlee" Richard shouted.

"Flamethrower Charmeleon" Ash shouted before immediately regretting it.

That was the first mistake Ash had made in a long time in a Pokémon battle. While it hit Hitmonlee it charged through the flames and recklessly battered Charmeleon who did his best to defend itself. But Ash's call had left him wide open and so a burned Hitmonlee, on its last legs delivered the final kick knocking Charmeleon out. Seeing its opponent faint Hitmonlee slowly made its way across the battlefield and waited panting for his next opponent.

"Thank you Charmeleon" Ash said recalling him "that one is my fault. You're up Pi" and Pikachu jumped onto the field waiting instructions.

"That was a fantastic battle Ash" Richard said, "and if it wasn't for your mistake at the end, it could well have been a win for you."

"I agree" Ash said "small margins and errors often decide battles. That one was my fault; I should have had Charmeleon guard as best it could and wait for an opening. And while we nearly won it still means we actually lost. We can improve on that so thank you. Sadly though Hitmonlee won't beat Pikachu but we can at least give it a noble ending. Pi, you know the combination."

At that before Richard could react Pikachu charged forwards faster than most eyes could see and smashed into Hitmonlee with his tail sending Hitmonlee flying out of the battlefield where he landed unconscious. Trotting back to Ash Pikachu waited for his next opponent.

"Now that was some impressive speed" Richard said recalling his downed Pokémon "we'll have to try and match that. Come on out Hitmonchan" a big Pokémon, with boxing gloves appeared crying its name and got into a defensive stance awaiting instructions.

"And there's the second one of the trio. Another one I saw Bruno use in a League battle." Ponting Dexter again he beeped to life.

"Hitmonchan, Pokedex Number 105, The Punching Pokémon and the evolved form of Tyrogue. Its punches slice the air in lightning-fast volleys that are impossible to see. However, it seems to need a short break after fighting for three minutes."

"Yup thought so" Ash said "this Pokémon is going to hit hard Pi, so all these defence training sessions are definitely going to come in handy here. It seems cardio isn't its strong point so maybe we can use that."

Laughing Richard said "I wouldn't count on it Ash. We spar every day for hours at a time to cover that weakness."

"So do we" Ash said nodding "Pikachu's defences are notorious for being bad, so we sparred every day since we found each other four months ago to cover that weakness."

"You spar with your Pokémon?" Richard asked interested.

"Yeah" Ash said "I trained for five years with the Lucario from Cameron Palace as reparations for what they did to me. For the last year of that training, I was undefeated by any of them. I decided to carry that on with all my Pokémon. Unfortunately, they're not fighting Pokémon, so we had to limit what we do and tailor each Pokémon's sessions. Pi is not as brittle as people believe he is."

"Are you after a fighting type?" Richard asked making everyone interested in his response.

"I am yes" Ash said, "unfortunately the ideal fighting type for me is one I have no intention of getting." Seeing his confused face, he continued "a Riolu or Lucario would be the most beneficial to me as I'm an Aura Wielder. Unfortunately, I don't trust them. All of them report to Rota or Cameron Palace at some point as they believe being an Aura Guardian is a noble cause. None I have spoken to have swayed from that line of thought. And Riolu eggs are extremely rare so I can't train one to see my point of view from birth and I have no intention of getting one from Rota. So, I'm stuck on what fighting type to try and get."

"Are you defensive minded or offensive minded?" Richard asked curious.

"I would say both really. I can defend myself pretty well, but I also know when to attack and when I do I go all out. why" Ash asked.

Shrugging Richard said "just curiosity. Now, shall we get on with the battle?"

"Yes, lets" Ash said "Pi, its defences are really good, and they counterattack so beware of how you land after you attack. I'm going to leave this one up to you, but I will shout attacks every now and then when I see an opening. Go for it Pi."

"Hitmonchan, keep your guard up. Its fast and can hit hard. Do what you can to find a gap and when you do exploit it."

The next ten minutes flew by with a series of tit-for-tat attacks from both parties. Occasionally Pikachu and Hitmonchan would be sent flying backwards, but they were instantly on their feet ready to go back into the melee. For time-to-time Ash and Richard would find openings to exploit but the battle was seemingly destined to end in a draw. It seemed by mutual consent at the ten-minute mark to both go to their sides of the field where they both stared at the other.

"Well, it's good that Hitmonchan doesn't seem to have the Iron-Fist ability" Ash said "or this would be a different battle. Inner Focus is a good hidden one that Hitmonchan seems to have."

"Indeed" Richard responded "it's also pleasing your Pikachu doesn't have Static or again this would be difficult. But we need to end this, Ash. Hitmonchan use Close Combat" Hitmonchan charged forward but this time Ash was ready.

"Pi, light it up." Richard thought Ash had fallen for the same trap and smiled, that was until Pikachu sent Hitmonchan flying backwards knocked out from the power of the Thunder attack. "Bloody hell" he said under his breath.

"Hitmonchan is unable to battle, Pikachu wins, therefore Ash Ketchum has won the battle."

Walking forwards Ash picked up Pikachu and they both celebrated. "That was fantastic Pikachu!"

"How did that happen?" Richard asked walking over to Ash.

"You forgot about the structure of the attack I used" Ash said "Flamethrower is a widespread move, meaning when launched it spreads outwards from its source, so it has a larger area to hit, the downside to that is that the move loses potency the further out it goes. Thunderbolt on the other hand is a lance, it has one target point which when it hits then spreads out at the point of contact. Which means it has a lot more impact and potency when it hits. Hitmonlee could charge through a Flamethrower because he could let it wash over him as he charged, Hitmonchan couldn't. Plus, Pikachu is very powerful".

"Wow" Richard said shaking his head "you learn something every day."

"As you should" Ash said nodding "that was a really good battle. I much prefer those types of battles. Being able to switch out is too easy because you can try and use type advantage. There's no real strategy in that. It's also the reason why I didn't use any ranged attacks until the end, simply to secure the win. Fighting Pokémon are lethal in close combat, from a distance they're much easier to deal with. So, I gave us more of a challenge, just to see how our sparring sessions are working out and I'm glad I did. My mistake cost Charmeleon the battle, he's really not going to be happy with me for that one."

"I did wonder why you didn't use any ranged attacks" Richard mused "that makes sense now. And that's the point of a battle, you learn from your errors. I know that I will be more cautious from now on before using Close Combat. Anyway, you've more than earned your badge, Ash. Here, I present to you the Kata Badge" he said holding out a circular badge with a fist and a belt embossed on its shield.

"Thank you. That's four now Pi" Ash said showing Pikachu the badge. "Just four more to get."

"Halfway there Ash. Now, I'm afraid I have other things to do today. Making sure the gym is fit for purpose as an official gym could take weeks yet. So, I thank you for the battle and wish you all the best" Richard said putting a fist in his other palm and bowing. Ash did the same, thanked him and left. His Pokémon needed the Centre. And hopefully Charmeleon would forgive him for his mistake.

After he left Riley left the seating area and walked up to Richard.

"He is very impressive, isn't he?" Riley said.

"He certainly is Riley" Richard replied "your conduct towards him however is concerning. He is right about one thing; you don't do anything without Queen Ilene ordering you to. Which means you were in Pallet Town all those years ago on her orders. So, officially I am giving you a message for your Queen regarding our alliance. Until she gives me a reasonable explanation for why she ordered you to attack a young boy without provocation, we will put our alliance on hold. When she does that, to my satisfaction I will re-establish our alliance."

"You would make demands of our Queen like that?" Riley asked outrage on his face.

"Yes, I would. And mind your tone boy. I don't care who you take orders off, I did not raise you to behave in such a manner. And while we're on that subject, before you leave Saffron you will go and see your mother and inform her of what you did" Richard said sternly holding his hand up "there will be no excuses, Riley. You have lied to her for the past six years about what happened that day. You will do so no more. Is that understood?"

"Yes father" Riley said hanging his head turning to leave "before I go though, why did you never answer the Queens call when you discovered your aura?"

"The life of an Aura Guardian is a solitary one. I met your mother when I was seven and knew she was it for me instantly, I didn't discover my aura until I was in my twenties and by that time, I had already married her and had a life here in this gym." Richard said after a moment of thinking "No one will ever take me from your mother. She has been my one thing in this life who I know I could count on to not only put me in my place but to also be by my side while doing so. And until today I believed you had listened to the cautionary tales that we instilled in you. I see I was wrong about that. Go and see your mother, I will know if you have not." With that Richard left to go to his office leaving a sullen Riley to trudge to his parent's house on the outskirts of the city. Knocking on the door he prepared himself for what was to come. This would not be fun.
