The next morning, Flora had many unanswered questions. She didn't know how to face Aisha. Was it all a prank? The girl wanted to believe that no, it wasn't, and she had just messed up, but then… Flora just didn't want to think about it.
Krystal, as well, had had a rough night. Even though she had been acting insensitive around Helia quite a lot lately, he was still her best friend. In a way, her only friend. Her mother hadn't came home since yesterday for she was working on a very complex case, which meant it was going to be her, and her father. All alone… The girl picked an all black outfit, walking down the stairs silently as to not wake him up.
"Krystal.", she heard. It was that voice which froze her up each and every time.
"Yes, father?"
"You have been very silent lately, which has me worried. If you ever say a word about what happens in this house, you know what is going to happen.", threatened the man, blocking her view. He then made her promise she was up to nothing.
"I swear, dad, please just let me go.", let out the girl, starting to tear up.
"Still the coward you were years ago, I see.", Christian remarked, walking away, a bottle of wine in his hands. His laugh echoed through the whole house, bringing shivers down his daughter's spine.
"Tell them to bring the body to the basement. You, shoo!"
Krystal quickly ran down the stairs, sprinting away as far as she could. Those screams, she just didn't want to hear them again. Ever. Only when she reached the school did she realize she had forgotten to eat breakfast.
Her legs felt weak. It had been the second meal she skipped. As the girl sat down, she felt a pat on her back. Krystal shivered at the touch.
"Hi, Krystal. Are you alright?", Flora asked with her sweet voice. She just had such a calming aura that even the school ice queen felt safe around.
"I skipped breakfast. I guess that's why.", she mumbled.
Flora took off her backpack, rummaging through it, before taking out a bar of cereal.
"I know it isn't much, but here!"
Krystal couldn't help but smile, accepting the piece of candy.
"Thanks, Flora. By the way, sorry for missing our rendez-vous. Maybe we can schedule another time?"
"Oh, that? Me and… Helia took care of it."
Helia? Was he not replying to her because he was with… no… it couldn't be…
"Oh, Helia… cool, I guess."
"Yeah…"
That's when Stella arrived out of nowhere, radiating sunshine as she always did. The blonde put her arm around Flora's shoulders, apparently in a good mood.
"Flora, no cap, Helia asked you to the dance?"
A blush appeared on the brunette's cheeks.
"Yeah, haha…"
Krystal's knees suddenly felt weak, as the cereal bar lost its taste. What was happening to her? It wasn't like she would go if… Oh, Krystal, just shut up.
"I have to go. You two talk. Thanks again."
She then ran off, finding refuge behind the school building. Why did things feel like they changed in just an afternoon? Krystal quickly took out her phone, pressing on Riven's name.
"Have you even been doing your job?", she typed.
The girl looked up, feeling sweat drip down her forehead.
"What do you mean?"
"Flora's going to the Halloween Dance with Helia."
"I know."
Did she tell him too? And he did nothing? Krystal suddenly felt annoyed. She had given him a house to live in, she had kept Musa safe… why wasn't Riven doing his part of the fucking deal?
"I'll make it easy. Either you somehow manage to prevent this from happening, or I won't keep making efforts for you and your Musa."
The girl's fingers felt on fire as she pressed the 'send' button.
"Are you kidding me?", was the reply.
"What do you mean?"
"Have you seen Musa?"
"What about her?"
Krystal put down her phone, slowly walking back into the crowds of students. Her eyes searched for raven hair and eyes of jay. What was Riven talking about?
For awhile she kept searching, until she finally found the girl in a small corner, with Bloom by her side. Yes, raven hair and eyes of jay. Only… those eyes were black with despair, and the girl's body full of scars. Fresh scars. You didn't need to be a genius to see that Musa had been beaten again.
"Riven, I didn't know. I really didn't."
"Yeah. That is so gonna help."
"Please, Riven, I don't want Flora to be in danger."
"Me neither. But you can't even save Musa, how the fuck do you think you're gonna save her?"
"I don't know."
She really didn't know, okay? At first, Krystal felt like she just had to make Helia fall in love with her instead. She would do anything for him to, for that way Flora would be safe. But she soon realized how hard it actually was. Each time, she would have to lie to him. This closure they had as best friends, it already hurt her to no end. But the lies she had to think of to make him her lover? It just felt like arrows going through her heart on an hourly basis. Deep down, the coldest facades have the most sensitive hearts. And she would never admit it, but Krystal was sensitive.
Riven was her only hope. It just had to work.
"Why do you care about Flora anyways?", her phone rang.
"Why do you care about Musa then? Riven, it's the only way we can keep both of them safe!"
"I believed you. How is Musa now, may I ask?"
It was a good thing Krystal wasn't a crybaby at heart, for she would have broken down right then and there.
"I'll talk to Helia again, okay?"
Krystal started to understand. The second she turned her back, the second she finally spoke her mind, Helia went down his usual coping mechanism again. And his coping mechanism, sadly, was Musa. He enjoys making himself seem like such a victim, but at the same time he never gives a second thought to the pain he inflicts to other people.
That's when the girl saw Helia walk through the school gates, greeted by a very happy Flora, and her 'friends'.
"Calm down, Krystal. He lets his ego guide him, you won't let yours guide you. You're better than that. This is just all a game, don't take it so seriously. Forget these feelings."
She walked over, as confident on the outside as scared in the inside. Now it was all clear for the girl. She was a pawn in her own game of chess, and each choice she made would make the biggest difference. In this context, it was a matter of life and death.
"Helia, we need to talk."
