Chapter 36
After the opening ceremony, Lily settled in one of the chairs, next to her brother James, who was getting up to dance with the many girls who asked them. She shook her head at him.
He was having the time of her life. The table was surrounded by several of James's friends.
"Ah!" A familiar voice pricked up Lily's ears, and alarms of danger rang in her ears.
She turned around. It was Marie Skeeter.
"What do you want?" She growled at her.
Several students disappeared, and suddenly the Great Hall seemed much less crowded than it was five minutes ago. The band had struck up a new song. Lily actually liked this song, up till now. Now she was beginning to hate it.
"Just a civil conversation!?" Marie Skeeter smiled.
Lily didn't let her guard down. She knew what a 'civil conversation' meant in the Skeeter Family. This was war.
"No thanks..." Lily started to walk away.
"Do you think you have done better than the other champions?" She asked Lily.
"No...No, I haven't!" Lily answered shortly.
The Quick Quills scribbled away.
"How did you solve the second task?" She asked again, "I heard it was very hard."
"I managed!" Lily said through gritted teeth as she tried to move away, but Marie Skeeter was holding her hand, and didn't let go.
"How much better do you think you did than your father?" Marie Skeeter threw her another question.
"Not at all...Everything was just good luck!" Lily had no idea how Marie Skeeter would ruin and twist simple words like these, but she was sure that she would give it her best shot.
Lily finally yanked her wrist out of her grip, and started to leave.
"I have to go..." She said, "It was not a pleasure meeting you..." She added when she was out of hearing.
Lily felt that all good things came to an end because of her encounter with that Skeeter woman, and she decided to go to bed. Melissa would be ready to hear all about it. She was holding Melissa's phone, who had given it to her to take some photos.
It started to ring. Lily fiddled with the phone, she still hadn't learned how to use it yet.
"Damn it!" She cursed under her breath as she tried to see which way was right, and she saw Mavis chiming up on the screen. She tried to pick it, but she ended up hitting the decline button. And the phone didn't ring again. She tried to call and explain, she finally tried to send a message. She ended up sending photos to Mavis. All the photos of her and Melissa. Six of them captioned, 'Best Friends Forever!'
On the other side of the call. Mavis threw her phone on the bed, fell in the pillows, and buried her face in it, as the pillow started to get wet from her tears.
On the bed was a photo album, filled with pictures of her and Melissa. Together, in every photo as always. Up till now.
Lily Potter woke up the next day drowsy, and tired. She didn't enjoy the night as much as she thought she would. She was really dreading what Marie Skeeter would write, and she was worried that she had created friction between the Dursley Sisters, by mistakenly sending those photos to Mavis. She was also worried about the last task of which she hadn't received the clue yet.
She looked at Melissa's bed, it was empty, she had explained the whole situation to Melissa, who didn't blame her, but was now feeling bad for her sister. She had gone down to the Owlery to send her a letter.
Lily scrambled out of bed, and went to the bathroom. It was almost eight O'clock, and she wanted to be down to the Great Hall, before Hugo ate everything on the table.
"Hello!" She quietly slid between Melissa and James, who were saving her a seat. "What happened to Mavis?"
She asked Melissa.
"I don't know, but I sent her a letter."
"I hope everything's okay...And I didn't ruin anything else did I?" She asked her,
"No..." Melissa tapped Lily on the back, "Don't feel so bad, you are under so much pressure already!"
She was against Max Karkowitch in the last task, but had no idea of what the task would be. She was hoping McGonagall would tell her soon, and hoped that she would drop some hints about it. At the beginning of the Tournament, it wasn't about winning, it was just about coming out of it alive. But now, she wanted to defeat Drumstrang and win this thing.
Owls flooded the Great Hall. Lily's owl landed on her shoulder, and it had a copy of the Daily Prophet. Lily pulled it out his beak, he ate bread James was holding for him. Hooting softly, and disappeared out of the Great Hall.
She unrolled it, and on the front page was her picture.
"OH MY GOD!" Several students turned to look at her. But she didn't care, maybe because she didn't know that they were looking at her.
"What?" James slid over to see what it was. His fork dropped from his hand. "OH MY GOD!"
Fred was intrigued; he pulled it out of Lily's hands, his eyes widened, Melissa took it from him.
"LILY LUNA POTTER
THE CHAMPION FOR HOGWARTS AND ONE OF THE LAST PEOPLE STANDING FOR THE LAST TASK, IS DELUSIONAL AND CRAZY!
She has finally lashed out when she didn't get enough attention from her parents, who keep fighting and are on the verge of a divorce. She tried to strangle two of her classmates, and me. But she calmed down when I told her of the spotlight she would receive when I would publish this article. She certainly feels that she has done a better job than her father, who is the man who defeated You-Know-Who.
Still, being in the Triwizard tournament didn't give her enough attention, so she felt the need to jeopardize her best friend's relationship with her sister."
Melissa dropped the Prophet, she had a horrified look on her face.
