"Gideon?" Kyle gasped as he helplessly watched the battle unfold on screen, "Gideon's there? Pull them out, Julian! Pull them out now!"
"I can't, they're completely surrounded!" Doc realized, although even as he did his fingers were frantically dancing across the keys, desperate for a solution to prove himself wrong. "Those Byte-Bots aren't giving the Data Cycles any room to move!"
This was bad. This was really, really bad.
For as long as he'd been a prisoner in his own body, he'd never known Gideon to sully his own hands. And for that, he knew the Rangers had been lucky. Gideon had been powerful enough to keep Kelgar in line, to treat him as poorly as he did without even a hint of rebellion.
And although he was created with the explicit purpose of serving his master, Kyle knew that the Cyrax program feared him as well. That the proud warrior would never have dared raise a hand against his master, knowing of the reprisal to follow.
"They can't fight him," Kyle warned. "They're not ready. They need to get out of there!"
"What can they do Kyle?" Doc demanded. "I don't want them there any more than you do, but right now I can't think of a way to help them."
But there was a way, and Kyle's eyes snapped to the small, silver device sitting on the desk, the one that Doc had plugged into the shield unit.
"Then I'll go." He declared.
"No!" Benson snapped back. "It's too dangerous."
"Benson, we don't have a choice."
"Kyle, think this through," Doc warned. "I haven't figured out all the bugs yet. If you take that powerset now, Cyrax could still be in there. He could take you over and then we'll be back to square one! And I don't think that shield unit trick is going to on him a second time!"
Kyle hissed in a breath as his eyes shot back to the screen, staring at Gideon's insufferable smirk that looked down at the Rangers.
"Our best bet is to sit tight," said Benson. "The Rangers have gotten out of tight binds before. We just have to hope that they can figure a way out of this one."
Kyle scowled as he looked back at the screen. "' Hope' is the keyword there."
Gideon slowly stepped forward, Byte Bot kneeling like waves as he passed. As he reached Mileena he beckoned for her to rise.
"It took three of them to defeat Cyrax," He informed her.
"I can assure you, master, I am still standing," she replied. "A lucky shot, nothing more. Not even the five of them will be enough!"
"Sorry to disappoint then," Gideon chuckled. "You won't be dealing with the five of them."
"Master?"
Gideon flicked the Rangers an evil grin, and Ray's chest shrilled with terror as he realized the words before his enemy even said them. Arms shaking, he braced himself, lifting his sword as Gideon confirmed to his minion, "I will."
He surged forward, a black blade appearing out of nowhere as he rocketed towards the Rangers. His very impact scattered them like a bowling ball through pins, flinging them into the air like they were nothing.
Ray landed first, planting his feet on the ground and reading his Power Sword.
"Guys, stick together," he ordered. "Don't let him catch you alone."
But Gideon just looked up and grinned. "You know Mileena, you're right. I shouldn't hog all the fun."
"You're too kind."
As the Rangers charged together in hope of a coordinated strike, their hopes were quickly dashed. Mileena snapped forward, planting herself between Jake, Ben, and Hilary to allow only Ray and Johnny to reach her master.
Ray skidded to a stop, spinning back to help his team, only to see that the Byte-Bots had closed in. With the Rangers split, the minions had locked together, forming a barrier between the two battles. Separating the team from each other. Seeing his uncertainty, Gideon opened his stance to welcome the opening blow.
"Come at me, Red Ranger," he chuckled, "If you dare."
Ray looked at Johnny. A quick nod was the confidence he needed. And it was all he could muster as the two Rangers lunged in together.
Gideon ducked beneath Ray's sword, kicking him away before catching Johnny's staff in his hand. He stepped forward, using the staff as a fulcrum to slam the Black Ranger backward, flicking his wrist as to yank Johnny from the ground and into the air.
Ray had barely turned as Johnny was hurled into him, the pair colliding and toppling the ground in a heap. They snapped to their feet, Ray drawing the Modem Blade to hold a weapon in each hand.
"I mean," Gideon shrugged, "If you think it will help…"
They lunged again, arcing in wide to hit him at the flanks. Ray sliced the two blades above, like giant scissors to either catch Gideon or force him back. Instead, he thrust up his sword, blocking the path of both blades and locking them in place. With nowhere to go, Ray was helpless as Gideon spun, sweeping his legs out from under him and cracking him to the ground.
Then Gideon weaved again, this time to avoid a kick from Johnny who'd planted his staff into the ground. Away from harm, Gideon lashed out, grabbing Johnny's leg and squeezing. He heaved, swinging the Black Ranger over his head in a full arc before striking a punch him in midair. A shockwave burst from the impact, and Johnny was sent rocketing into the pack of Byte Bots.
Then Gideon reached down and picked up Ray by the scruff of his Ranger suit.
"Shame," he said. "I'd have expected more."
Over from her battle with Mileena, Hilary caught a glimpse of what happening, but so far away she could only scream.
"Ray!"
With the rest of the team helpless to watch, Gideon raised his sword high before bringing it down on the Red Ranger. The blade sliced against his uniform, sparks bursting from his chest and sending him soaring backward as Gideon released him. In her circle, Mileena leaped into the air, summoning a blade of energy that soared toward her opponents. Detonating on impact, the explosion blasted the three Rangers backward, tossing them in all directions before they too hit the ground in a steaming heap.
Before any of them could stand, the Byte-Bots were already on them, scrambling to grab them before hoisting all the Rangers up high and tossing them into a heap in the middle of the square.
"People of Cranston City!" Gideon announced. "I present to you your mighty defenders. The Power Rangers!"
Kyle's knuckles went white as he watched the Rangers, one by one, tossed on top of each other in a heap. He should be out there, with them. Not stuck behind some monitor, helplessly watching at all playing out.
They were Rangers because of him. They were out there, risking their lives, because of him. Because he'd gotten lax and got himself captured. Because Cyrax had pulled Digitize access codes from his mind, even as he'd zealously protected that exact location. Because someone had to stand against Gideon, and he couldn't.
Every fight, every battle, had all been because they had stumbled upon where he'd stashed the Digitizer. And now it was the very reason they were about to be destroyed. Every part of Gideon's plan was something Cyrax had enabled, and Kyle had been unable to stop.
Until now.
His eyes darted to the device running the system scan, to the screen updating on its completion. Ninety-five percent. It would have to do.
"That's it!" he decided, yanking the shield unit free from its wiring and ending the program.
Benson whipped around, eyes wide and fearful of what was unfolding before him. "Kyle, what are you doing? Put it back!"
Kyle ignored him, picking up the small device and thrusting it into his backpack. Then he scooped up the helmet on the desk and ran over to the motorcycle by the roller door.
"I can't sit here and do nothing," Kyle insisted. "I can not just stand back and watch them be destroyed. Not when I know that there's a chance that I can help them. No matter how slim that chance is."
"Kyle, if there is even one ounce of the Cyrax virus left in that system the program will rebuild itself and reassert control," Benson warned. "You could charge in there to fight Gideon and end up standing right alongside him. Cyrax could take you over and you could end up destroying the Rangers yourself!"
"In a moment that won't matter," Kyle shot back. "Because if I don't do something, right now, then Gideon will end up destroying them anyway."
Then he flipped down the visor, snapping back the kickstand to rev the throttle. Then, before Benson could say any more, Kyle rocketed out of the warehouse, out into the Cranston city streets. Out toward his fate.
"Pathetic," Gideon snarled, watching as the Rangers struggled to stand before him. "How weak would Kelgar's virus' have been if this is all it takes to defeat them?"
Huddled together, the Rangers stood with their weapons raised, an unconvincing final stand against Gideon's unrelenting force. The numbers were too big, and their enemy too strong. It was a miracle their Morphers hadn't shorted out, and right now Ray knew that the only reason they even stood at all was because of their enemy's grace.
Gideon was toying with them.
Ray shot a look to his friends, hobbling together, struggling to stand and limbs limping holding their weapons in desperate defiance. At any moment, Gideon would tire of his games, and then he would finish them for good. If he was to have any hope of his team escaping, this was his only window. He just had to hope they'd let him take it.
That they'd let him stay behind.
"All right, guys," Ray told them. "I know it looks grim, but we're going to get through this. Jake, Ben; you guys take the hundred group on our left. Johnny, Hilary, you do the same on the right."
"Ray?" Ben asked him, although his tone betrayed an already-knowing answer. "What does that leave you to do?"
"I'm going to try and hold Mileena and Gideon as long as I can, give you guys time to escape."
"Ray, we're not leaving you," Hilary insisted.
"I'll try to get out, I promise. So long guys swear to not look back, okay?"
"No way, Ray," Jake replied. "We're getting out of this together."
"Rangers forever, right?" said Johnny.
Arguing with them was pointless, a battle he was never going to win. Not on this. He couldn't blame them. Roles reversed; he'd do the exact same thing. As a leader, he wanted them to escape, to flee and live to fight another day. But as a Ranger, he knew that he'd be beside any that chose to stand and fight. Together until the end.
Instead, his grip on his sword tightened as he faced down the horde. Turned to face his doom with his best friends by his side.
"Rangers Forever," he repeated.
"Hold on tight guys," Doc warned them. "There's some help coming your way."
Ray didn't ask what he meant. A moment was probably more than they had, and even in trying to reassure them, Doc's tone betrayed his hesitance. The uncertainty that what was coming was going to help. Instead, Ray stood tall, friends by his side, and readied for the end.
"Cyrax must have been truly weak," Gideon laughed. "If these pathetic rangers were all it took to destroy him!"
"How about you say that to my face?"
The challenge echoed as it cut through the air, tension squeezing tight as Gideon's expression dropped from revelry to anger. All heads whipped around, shocked at its source. Then the air shilled with a roaring engine as a motorbike launched into the sky.
Lasers flared, the Byte-Bots scrambling to stop them as the vehicle soared above. The rider flipped off the seat, leaping from the saddle as the vehicle finished its flights and crashed into the horde. Then, bouncing against the concrete and crumbling the Byte-Bots beneath it, it exploded into a blazing ball of fire as the rider landed crouching before it. As smoking parts rained and clattered across the ground, the rider slowly, pulled their head from their helmet to turn and glare at Gideon in daring defiance.
"Miss me already, Gideon?" grinned Kyle.
"Kyle?" Ray realized. "What are you doing here?"
"Saving you," he told them, striding to place himself between the Rangers and their enemies before adding his breath. "I hope."
He flipped open the device's screen and punched in the security override code.
It was the moment of truth, to see if Julian's programming had done its magic, or if the ghost of Cyrax still lingered within. To see if he'd arrived as the team's salvation or its doom. His heartbeat pounded; an eyelid flickered. His knuckles whitened as his grip squeezed the device and he looked back up at the man who had once enslaved him
"Really, Mason?" Gideon scoffed. "You've barely gone a week and you're already crawling back? Were you that eager to face my disappointment again?"
"Oh, believe me," Kyle sneered, holding forth the device for all the world to see. "There's nothing I'd love to see more than your disappointment. DATA SQUAD! DIGITIZE!"
And then he hit the button and unleashed the power inside.
The energy flared from the device, flowing like a bursting dam as it fully engulfed his body. The suit sealed around him, squeezing against his limbs as the armored plating locked into place, the power swirling around him, strengthening his muscles and bones. The weapons materialized in his hands, others at his belt, arming for the conflict that awaited. Finally, the familiar orange visor slid in front of his eyes, illuminating his vision with the full linkup display from the warehouse. And the light faded, revealing him for all in the square, everyone watching and wondering if he had become friend or foe.
His gloved hand curled, squeezing into a fist as the tested the new power, feeling it flow through his veins. As he realized that his body was still his own.
His mind was still his own.
"It feels good to be in control this time," He declared with a grin, spinning around and striking an intimidating pose as a warning to all that stood before him. "Data Squad, Security Ranger!"
"You did it!" Doc cried through the com, just as surprised as he was excited. "You actually did it!"
"Way to go Kyle!" congratulated Ray.
But even with his power restored, they were well out of the woods. There was still a whole army between them and the city. But Kyle's arrival had done more than add a fresh body to the fight. It had renewed the Ranger's resolve, invigorating them for another round.
"Guys," Kyle said to them, "we can celebrate later. Right now, I've got some issues to sort out with my former employer."
He grasped the hilt of his sword, summoning the purple energy around the blade. Gideon's eyes glowered at him, flourishing his sword as he pointed its tip at the now six Rangers.
"By all means, Mason," he growled. "I would be more than happy to discuss your termination."
Then, with a crack of his neck, Kyle lunged.
The Byte-Bots rushed to intercept him, but his sword made quick work of them, slicing through their formation like a hot knife through butter. Then he stashed the blade, whipping out his pistols to leap into a backflip. The blasters erupted into a torrent of laser fire, raining energy down on the foot soldiers as the rounds exploded at their feet.
Giving the opening for the others to engage. Seeing their enemy converge on their new teammate, Ray turned to the others. "Let's, say we give him a hand!"
"Right!"
Weapons drawn, they vaulted into action, joining Kyle to cleave through the Byte-Bots with every blow. But they were still far from the edge of the woods.
"Aren't you forgetting about something?"
The Rangers spun around to see Gideon, fuming at Kyle's interference and standing with his blade at the ready.
Ray looked to his teammates and nodded. A silent signal that the others understood in an instant. A certainty to not repeat their prior mistakes. Move as a team; cover each other's backs.
Ray flipped down his sword, standing open and inviting.
"Well, Gideon?" he taunted. "We're waiting."
His calm demeanor vanished, replaced with a blind fury as Gideon unleashed a howling roar and lunged at Ray directly.
"I don't think so!"
Jake closed in first, swinging the axe to block the path. Gideon corrected footing, black sword swinging straight at the Blue Ranger, only for the Power Staff to snap in the way. With their enemy pinned, Hilary was next leaping while Gideon's back was turned to shear her sais behind his knees.
Their nemesis howled, fury only rising as threw off Johnny and stepped aside, cleaving his mighty blade at the vexatious Yellow Ranger. But Hilary was more than ready, duck and rolling redirect her force and slice at his side instead.
"You!" he snarled. "You will pay!"
"Come get some!"
Fully ensconced in his fury, all of Gideon's attention now focused on Yellow Ranger, charging right for her in complete abandonment of the others. But as Hilary leaped aside, Ray's Power Sword flashed in to take the blow.
"Come on now," he laughed. "That's not very gentlemanly."
Then Ben brought the hammer down. Soaring through the air while Gideon was pinned, the blue malleted collided with Byte-Bot's master, unleashing a shockwave that send him rocketing into the horde.
Landing in an undignified crumbling heap, he leaped to his feet immediately and let loose a furious howl. "MILEENA!"
But there was no reply because over on the side of the square, she'd been cornered by the very man she'd been created to replace.
"So, I see you're Gideon's new hire," Kyle scoffed before raising his sword. "Let's see how you measure up."
"Pft, you don't even measure at all."
The two warriors lunged at each other, energy blades streaking the sky and flashing as they connected. She was fast, possibly faster than he'd ever been as Cyrax. And every time their blows met, Kyle could feel the full strength behind them. But he was human; he had a mind that could adapt.
And he had no interest in playing fair.
As he spun, he struck, delivering a flurry of blows as distract. Then, as Mileena's focus was drawn to defending from his punches and kicks, he planted himself firmly to chop down with his sword. Mileena's recovery was quick, footing locking in place as she blocked the blade and held it aloft.
"You'll have to do better than that to compare to me," she sneered.
"Already have."
Then he whipped up the pistol in his spare hand, slamming it to her stomach before she even realized he'd drawn it. Before she could cry out, he squeezed the trigger, unloading the full force of the energy at point-blank range. Knocked from her feet, the blast sent her flying, feet kicking helplessly as she tumbled through the air.
But she wasn't out yet. As she flew she corrected, finding her balance to position herself before slamming into the ground in a crouch, skidding the final distance as her fist scraped against the asphalt. When her head flipped, all Kyle could see was a twisted snarl and eyes brimming with pure hatred.
Her head whipped around as she heard her master's call, but she was far too late. The Rangers had formed their weapon.
"Data Blaster!" they cried, lowering the combined weapon straight at Gideon. "FIRE!"
The cannon boomed, as the shot seared directly at him. With a roar Gideon thrust up his hands, summoning a sheet of green energy that caught the blast in mid-air, blast splashing on contact with such force that the flames still surged with powerful force. But while protected from the blast, even as the smoke cleared Gideon looked far from pleased. While the shield at taken the blow, intercepting it had pushed him back several feet.
"I grow tired of this," he sneered before looking upwards. "Kelgar send it down! Crush these Rangers and their beloved city!
Then, with a flourish of his cape and reaching toward the sky, he vanished in a flash of emerald, taking Mileena and all the Byte-Bots. Conceding the square to the rangers. Conceding defeat.
Finally, with a moment to breathe, the Rangers rushed to Kyle's side and huddled around him.
"Way to go Kyle!" Hilary congratulated.
"It's going to feel weird seeing that suit on our side," Ben admitted.
But the sky still hadn't changed, and now soon the ground itself began to rumble
"Guys?" Doc warned over the radio, "It looks like Gideon's sent down a virus to attack the city, and he's gone straight to the bigger is better plan."
"Right! Zord Powers, Digitize!"
But as the Zords flared to life, materializing in the air and thunder together as Rangers leaped to cockpits, they soon saw why Gideon had been so eager to jump straight to the second act.
"Server Patrol Megazord! Online!"
The monster was an enormous spherical mound of steel. Its limbs were short and stumpy, its head barely protruding from the top. But at the center of its mass was a giant toothy maw, inside a hungry void of flame.
"I mean, it's not the worst one we've seen," Ray conceded.
But the rumbling didn't finish, as behind them came more thudding footsteps. Then to their absolute horror and amazement, another giant foot stepped out from behind the buildings. Black, red, and humanoid in appearance with a sword and shield in hand, their mouths gaped in horror at the sight they knew all too well.
A Megazord. Gideon had built his own Megazord.
"So that's what Gideon wanted Professor Murphy for!" exclaimed Hilary.
Then a voice echoed throughout the square, thundering from the enemy mecha. "Not so big anymore, are you Cyrax?"
Down below, Kyle grit his teeth. Kelgar.
Because of course, he'd want to get his own hits in. Kyle stared at the Megazord and then at the monster, knowing there was no way the Rangers could handle both on their own.
He opened the com, bounding skyward to land atop the nearest building.
"Guy, you try and handle 'rolly' over there," he insisted. "I'll handle the Megazord."
"But Kyle-" Ben tried to interrupt.
"It'll be okay, I know what I'm doing."
Only half true.
With no time for doubt or misgivings, he vaulted into the air, bounding to a higher building as he got closer and closer to Kelgar's weapon of destruction. The Sever Patrol Megazord emerged behind him, skidding in front of the monster as Kyle climbed high and higher, leaping from roof to roof before at last, he was close enough for a final jump.
Then, with all of the power his suit could muster, he hurled himself at the Megazord. For a moment, it felt like time had stopped. His heart thumped the walls of his chest as he soared, slowly crawling across the air in a desperate hope that Kelgar would neither see him nor direct the Zord to swat. And then his hand hit metal, his whole body slamming hard into the armored surface as he grabbed on tight for dear life. He'd made it to the Megazord.
Every step the damn thing took rocked its form, taking all of Kyle's concentration to stay upright. But still, he climbed, pulling himself onto the shoulder and pressing onwards, step by step until at last, he found what he was looking for.
An entrance hatch.
With a swift swing, his blade cracked it open and Kyle dropped down into the great machine.
Kelgar was standing at the controls, cackling wildly as he pulled a lever and the giant blade swung at the Server Patrol Megazord.
"This is so much fun!" he cackled. "Why have did I wait so long to do this? Things are going to be really different with a new big hitter charge!"
"Aww, Kelgar," Kyle smirked. "You did miss me."
The reptile spun around, spinning out a mallet as he hissed at the invader.
"Back off, Mason!" He spat, flicking the switch to auto-pilot. "I've spent too long in your shadow to lose now!"
"No," Kyle scoffed., "You were in Cyrax's shadow. Me? Your just in my way."
The two warriors lunged at each other. The mallet swung out first, Kyle stumbling back to dodge as very air slammed away from Kelgar's attack. He swung again, and again, each time forcing Kyle backward.
But for all his strength, there was no speed, no finesses. Three swings later, Kyle had the rhythm down pat.
"Get! Back! Here!" Kelgar roared.
"You asked."
Kyle ducked beneath the hammer, letting his blade whistle as it struck across his enemy's chest. Kelgar flailed backward before looking back at Kyle, seething.
"You'll never stop this thing!" He warned. "it's programmed to only shut down once it's leveled the entire city!"
Then he vanished in a flash of green. Kyle raced to the controls, only to find them unresponsive to his touch.
"Julian," he begged, "please tell me there's a way to control this thing!"
"Try attaching your Morpher to the main control booth, I should be able to connect from there."
Kyle frantically searched around the control panel until he found a small cable. Flipping up the back port on his Morpher, he plugged it in.
"Got it!" he exclaimed.
"Okay, just give me a sec," Kyle heard typing down on Julian's end. "You might want to hold on to something."
The whole Megazord shook, nearly hurling Kyle from his feet as his hand grasped the console. The mecha violently thrashed, flailing as it wrestled against Doc's command.
Then, all of sudden it stopped and became dead still.
"Okay, I think that did it," said Benson. "Try the controls."
Here goes nothing, Kyle thought for the second time that day. He pulled on the lever and the Megazord swung. The first jutted out, swinging wide to collide with the boiler monster. The arm cracked against its face, the giant ball flailing as it tumbled back and rolled to its feet further away.
"Ow!" the monster cried. "Friendly fire!"
"Kyle?" asked Ray over the radio, "Did you do that?"
In reply to the question, Kyle steed the mechanized warrior, standing beside the Server Patrol in a renewed sign of solidarity.
"Yeah," he grinned, "How about we finish this?"
"Hang on!" said Doc. "I've got an idea. How about we give you some real firepower? Deploying the Bison Zord!"
From the chest of Server Patrol, the large bull burst to life in the square, materializing before the monster and the two Megazords, feet thundering as it hit the ground.
"Begin docking sequence!" Kyle commanded, a smile spreading from ear to as two machines began to move.
The bull soared into the air, its main body splitting open to create an open cavity before itself wrapping around Kyle's new Zord. The separated machinery formed armor plating around the arms and shoulder, the cannons locking into place down the wrists, locked and loaded.
Then the head slid, locking into place down a long line of metal to position itself above the chest.
"All right!" Kyle cheered. "Firewall Megazord! Data Blade!"
Fully formed, Kyle steered his new machine to be face-to-face with the monster.
"No way!" it exclaimed. "Way to turn up the heat!"
"Kyle?" Ray asked. "Are you ready?"
"You know it!"
"Terabytesaber!"
"Data Blade!"
The weapon in the Megazord's hand began to glow as the Server Patrol's own flashed into its grip. Moving in one synchronous charge, both Zords lunged together, swinging their weapons in a unified arc. The giant boiler had nowhere to run.
"Full steam ahead!" Kyle chuckled.
The twin swords cracked through the surface of the boiler, its tiny arms flailing as its whole body toppled backward. The two Megazords continued the momentum, finally skidding to stop as the monster hit the ground, screaming. Then, as the two machines stood triumphantly side by side, the monster exploded behind them. Shredded down to its very atoms, the city's great defenders towered above, secure in another victory.
A few days later, the Rangers began their morning trudging into the school again. Their hope for a relaxing weekend had come and gone, and now they were left to return to the grind and whatever else the looming building had in store for them.
"So," Jake wondered. "Anyone, want to guess what dinosaurs they'd dug up as our subs for this week?"
"I'm legitimately scared that they're converting the school into a museum and they're going to start charging entry with the number of fossils they're bringing in," Hilary groaned.
"Well," Ben suggested. "If you hit any crazies, you can always make them cry again."
Hilary rolled her eyes as they wandered up the front steps. But as they approached the main doors, a voice stopped them in their tracks.
"Excuse me, guys?"
All five turned around to see Kyle, dressed in a tweed jacket and khaki shirt underneath. He had a briefcase under his arm and was staring at the building in awe. "Can you guys tell me where I can find the computer lab?"
The Rangers stopped, Hilary's eyes already widening as she realized where this was going.
"I can," she said cautiously, "But why do you want to know?"
"The school was looking to hire someone as a new sub" Kyle smiled. "Apparently, they need someone steel-willed to handle their classes. It says here I have… Senior Computer Sciences up first."
Hilary's jaw dropped in absolute horror.
"Hey, Hilary," Jake snickered. "Don't you also have Senior Computer Sciences up first?"
The only response the Yellow Ranger gave among her stammering was a withering glare while Ray and Johnny tried hard as they could to stifle their laughter.
They were grossly unsuccessfully.
"Oh Hilary," Ben grinned, tapping her on the shoulder and leaving to guide the new sub to his first class. "Good luck making this one cry."
