I don't own these lovely characters, unfortunately.

Hey everyone! I'm sure Supercorp shippers are extremely disappointed with how the series ended between Lena and Kara. I know I am. This is a slightly AU depiction of their story. Reviews are welcome! Suggestions always welcome. Thanks for reading.
STORY SUMMARY: Love at first sight? hormones. Soulmate? Also hormones. Fate? Not real. Growing up on Krypton, Kara didn't believe in that sort of fairytale. Each person was matched according to genetic compatibility. Love grew with time. Yet, she seems to perpetually bump into one particular human despite all odds and challenged Kara's views on love.
When Kara first arrived on Earth, it was shortly before Independence Day. She was young, struggling to learn the native language, and everything was alien to her despite her being the outsider. The customs were so diverse. When to touch someone and how. She also had to learn when to give the humans who adopted her physical space. Kara just wanted to fly back home to Krypton. But she couldn't. Her home was gone. Gone in a blaze of ignorance from the High Council.
As many can imagine, fireworks were terrifying. They reminded her of Krypton exploding right before her eyes. The noise itself was deafening to Kara. Her super hearing wasn't doing her any favors. The Danvers had located her under the kitchen table crying out kryptonese words they didn't know. She had covered her ears with her hands, praying to Rao for the fireworks to stop. Alex recognized the one word she kept crying over and over. Kara explained some phrases and words to Alex, and this one broke her heart as she saw the small 13 year old girl crumbling before her.
"Jeju!" Kara cried, her crystal clear blue eyes filled with tears, her face flushed. Alex had crawled under the table, pulling the younger girl into her arms in a rare display of affection. Eliza and Jeramiah watched silently as their oldest placed her cheek against Kara's golden hair.
"I'm not your Jeju. But I am your Je. I'm your sister, Kara. I'll protect you, I promise." she whispered, her reddish brown hair tickling Kara's nose as she sniffled and buried her head in Alex's shoulder, parroting the word sister over and over.
And this memory is one Kara clung to, as she watched the TV at Noonan's informing everyone the plane Alex was on malfunctioned. With her excellent alien vision, she spotted the plane in the distance, an engine on fire. Before she could even contemplate her choice, she was up, up and away. The memory gave her the courage to do what she vowed to never do. Reveal herself to the world. Thus, Supergirl was born.
And it is this memory that she found herself in a bar with Alex and Kelly on New Year's Eve. She fiddled with her glasses out of nervousness. Alex laughed animatedly at Brainy trying to flirt with Nia Nal. Kelly shook her head and Kara, well she was just happy to be included. She watched the TV screen count down the minutes until the New Year, oblivious to a dark haired woman eyeing her from across the bar. Alex spotted her before Kara did. With her scotch glass in hand, Alex saddled up a stool next to her Kryptonian sister.
"Hey, so it's New Year's Eve. Who're you gonna kiss in this place?" her sister teased, gesturing to the throng of humans and aliens alike. Kara's face flushed in embarrassment.
"No one." Kara mumbled. "And before you say anything, you humans are so tactile. It was…an odd adjustment." Alex threw her head back with a laugh.
"I suppose, but that girl at 2 o'clock has been eyeing you like you are an all you can eat buffet." Kara sputtered. Her face began to flush a deep red.
"Alex!" she hissed, her eyes pleading for her to stop. The DEO agent chuckled, raising her open palms in surrender.
"Alright, alright. Just tell me if you're going to be her breakfast, lunch and dinner so I know not to check up on you." she said with a wink. Alex gave Kara's shoulder a firm squeeze and a gentle smile graced her lips.
"Just let go, Kara. You deserve a break." she whispered before rejoining their ragtag team at the table behind her. Kara's shoulders sagged with defeat, her head resting on her hands. Alex was right after all. Kara spends every minute of every day rescuing other people. But, who would rescue her? She cast a glance towards the TV.
Just 20 minutes left. She thought. Behind the bar, the counter on the TV ticked down the seconds. Her view was obstructed by a large man, with a kind smile. She looked up into his rugged face.
"Lady at the end sent you a drink. She said you looked like you needed it." He set the glass down. Kara eyed it suspiciously for a moment. A cautious sniff confirmed what she suspected. It was Bourbon and it wasn't cheap. And luckily, it wasn't laced with anything nefarious. Her eyes fell on the dark haired stranger, who met her gaze. She raised her glass and knocked her drink back before turning to a taller woman next to her. Kara downed her drink. Human liquor doesn't affect her, but for some odd reason, she felt brave. With that bravery, she heeded Alex's advice and approached the woman. She had her back to Kara, but seemed to sense her before Kara even spoke. The stool spun. And suddenly, everything felt right. Kara felt the oxygen leave her lungs. Jade green eyes peered at her curiously. The woman who accompanied the green eyed woman smirked.
"I better get going. Ruby is probably still up." she mumbled to her companion, placing a few bills down and then she was gone. Kara could feel her friends' eyes burning into the back of her head.
"Is this seat taken?" Kara asked softly, a shy smile crossed her lips. The woman shook her head and gestured for her to sit.
"I'm Lena." she introduced. Kara smiled.
"Lena.'' She tested the name on her tongue. "Kara Danvers." she offered in return. Lena smiled widely, showing off a brilliant set of teeth.
"Well, Kara Danvers, did you enjoy the bourbon?" she asked, signaling the bartender for two drinks.
"I did. Thank you." Kara replied, her eyes twinkling. Two glasses were placed before them. She adjusted her glasses on the bridge of her nose for a moment. A nervous tick she purposefully picked up to seem more human. Lena eyed her as she sipped from her glass, and suddenly, Kara envied that glass. The way Lena's lips embraced the rim of it as she took a generous sip. Kara followed by example and had to rip her eyes from Lena's lips. Her ruby matte lips. Lucious, sensuous. Are they as soft as they looked? Get a grip, Danvers. She scolded herself for her inappropriate thoughts. A glass breaking broke Kara's trance. She turned to see a man look up sheepishly at the bartender, who just shook his head with a small smile.
"What do you do, Kara Danvers?" Lena asked, breaking the comfortable silence. Kara's expressive blue eyes peered over the top of her glasses at Lena. To stall answering, she took a deep draw of bourbon from her glass. Kara cleared her throat and gave a shy smile.
"Right now, I am Cat Grant's assistant. She wants me to be a reporter though. I just don't know." Kara answered softly. Lena quirked an elegant brow at her. This meek, gentle person was the assistant to the media world's worst nightmare. How?
"What's stopping you?" she asked.
"Fear of failure." Kara answered immediately. Kara always feared failure. Failing to assimilate, failing to learn English, failing to seem human, failing to be the best superhero she could be, failing as a daughter, an assistant, a friend, and something she holds dear to her heart, failing to be Kryptonian.
"Failing is how we learn. Rome wasn't built in a day, Einstein didn't invent the atomic bomb without setbacks, we didn't step foot on the moon without tests and trials and failures. It's a part of being human, and progress, no matter how big or small, is born from failure." Lena responded easily. "Failing is not the end all be all of someone. You fail, you learn, you do better next time." the raven-haired beauty paused, raising her eyes to study the blonde's profile. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, which showed off her strong, defined jawline. The Greek gods would be envious of this woman's beauty. Lena leaned forward to whisper in the blonde's ear.
"Be brave, Kara Danvers." Kara felt her warm breath ghost over her ear, sending a chill down her spine. She turned to face Lena, aware of their proximity. The bar erupted with cheers. Lena looked back up to the TV behind the bar.
"Ten seconds." she said smoothly. Her gaze returned to Kara, who was still staring at her.
"Eight!"
Kara smiled shyly, adjusting her glasses again.
"Seven!"
Lena's eyes flickered to the blonde's lips. She darted the tip of her tongue to wet her own
"Six!"
Kara was acutely aware of Alex's stare burning a hole in her temple, but she was far too focused on Lena's racing heart.
"Five!"
Lena's smile widened as she observed Kara leaning in.
"Four!"
Kara's breath hitched, catching the glint in Lena's eye as she leaned in.
"Three!"
Lena leaned forward.
"Two!"
Kara felt Lena's warm breath on her lips, heard the woman's heart hammering.
"One!"
Fireworks. And not the scary kind Kara remembered as a child first landing on an alien world. Her senses, albeit enhanced, seemed to amplify more. Lena slid off her stool accidentally, but Kara wrapped an arm around her waist to steady her, pulling her in close between her legs while she still sat on her own stool. She never pulled away. Lena placed her palms on Kara's cable knit sweater above her abdomen. She marveled at the muscles she could feel responding to her touch. Regretfully, Lena needed air, so she broke the kiss first.
"Happy New Year's, Kara Danvers." she whispered, still in close proximity to the blonde, her hands still resting on her stomach.
"Happy New Year's, Lena." she replied. A small smile graced her features. Alex came over to them, awkwardly breaking the connection she formed with this woman as she draped an arm over Kara's shoulder's. She felt the loss of Lena's hands as she pulled away from the blonde. Kara missed the warmth almost instantly.
"Happy New Year's, sis. You know. You do too much. Way, way too much. Take a vacation." Kara rolled her eyes, and smiled apologetically to Lena.
"I'm sorry." she apologized. Lena waved a hand dismissively.
"It's quite alright. Here. I wrote my personal cell on the back." She gave the flustered blonde a wink. "Text or call is fine." Kara's face broke out in a scarlet hue, since her sister was a witness to this. It was just a scrap piece of paper, and it just had her first name and number. Kara thought it was odd that the woman didn't offer a last name, but didn't dwell on the thought much longer.
"I will. I'm pretty sure I need to wrangle my crew up and take them home." Lena nodded.
"I was about to head home anyway. It's nice to make your…acquaintance, Kara Danvers." And just like the raven-haired woman's friend, she disappeared as quickly in the throngs of people. Kara watched her figure diminish from the bar windows as she passed by. Kara then spun on her sister, glaring. At least Alex had the decency to shrink away from the furious blonde.
"Alex! Really?"

Unfortunately, that week during an apartment building fire, Kara lost the paper with Lena's number. She felt the loss as if someone had died. And maybe she did. It was a big city, it's not like she would ever run across Lena again. She dreamt of the beautiful raven-haired woman almost every night. She would fly by the bar in hopes of spotting Lena, but it was fruitless. Lena No-Surname was like a ghost.
