It wasn't until he'd finally reached the river that his fury started to simmer. By then, it had run down to wisping steam, before eventually fading to a saddened sinking. He knew the second his back was turned that he was being an idiot, but somehow backing down felt worse. Especially if it meant Johnny was going to give him an 'I told you so' speech.

In truth, Ben knew the other Ranger was right; going to the warehouse themselves wouldn't help them yield any results, and it would just leave them exposed if Mileena attacked again. Whatever their enemy was up to, they were just going to wait it out.

So why was Johnny getting to him so much? He wasn't a bad guy, and the team was even gaining a lot from him. Even Ben had to admit that he was the main reason Jake's hand-to-hand fighting had come so far. He'd really pulled the team out of a number of jams, and Ben knew that he should be thankful and appreciative.

And as he thought of all the good that Johnny had done, who'd been nothing but kind and friendly in return, he could no longer ignore the real reason for his agitation. Because it wasn't Johnny he was angry at, it was Ray.

His best friend, who had been for as long as they could remember. Who now was drifting away, and there was nothing Ben could do to stop it.

"I thought this was Hilary's thinking spot?" mused a voice from behind, and Ben smiled begrudgingly at Ray's point as the Red Ranger stepped up to the bank beside him.

"Must be a family thing," Ben quipped before shrugging. "Just needed to blow off some steam."

Ray slowly nodded before looking at his best friend with concern.

"What's going on, man?" he asked. "You've been acting a bit weird ever since Jake and Johnny showed up."

"I don't know," Ben grumbled before could stop himself, spinning to the water to skim a rock on the surface. "Why don't you ask your BFF?"

The stone plunked into the water as Ray raised his eyebrow; he'd put it together and was clearly not impressed. Ben said nothing, instead looking back at the water to toss another rock.

"You're jealous?" Ray asked in surprise, "Are you seriously mad because I have other friends?"

Still Ben looked away. "No."

"You are, you're totally jealous!" Ray realized. "What is this, the second grade?"

Ben's jaw tightened, his heart pounding harder as Ray stared at him in amazement. He didn't dare tear his eyes from the river, too ashamed to meet Ray's gaze.

"It's just," he tried to explain, "you and Johnny have so much in common. You know, martial arts, music. And you guys make a great team; you guys kicked some serious but back there."

Ray just chuckled and shook his head.

"Dude, Johnny's great," he replied. "But you're still my best friend. We go way too far back to not be. There's no one else I'd rather go to if I needed help, and you know that."

Ben paused for a second. He was right. They'd been through everything together and knew each other in ways no one else could understand. He'd always thought that that was how they would always be. But it wasn't, and it was already changing.

It wouldn't last forever.

"It's weird," Ben admitted sadly. "You were always looking out for me and Hilary when we were younger, and I don't know, I guess now that we don't need it so much you wouldn't see a need to hang around with us."

"Hey," laughed Ray, "just because Dr. K said I have an overlydominantneed to be needed, doesn't mean you stop being my friend once you start sticking up for yourself. If anything, I think it's awesome you don't need me. It means that the only reason you want to hang out is that you want to."

Ben shrugged and skipped another rock. For a long time, silence hung between them, neither certain of what to say. Finally, Ray broke it.

"This isn't really about Johnny, is it?" he asked.

And there it was; an excuse that had finally been ripped away. Leaving Ben with only the truth he'd been desperate to avoid. Having been finally called out, Ben shook his head and, at last, spoke his fear out loud.

"We're only going to see less of each other, you know that right?" he said. "You, Hilary, Johnny, Jake; you're all heading to college in the fall. But I'll still be here, working on cars. Everyone else will be moving on, but I won't."

"Come on, dude," Ray replied. "Just because I'm moving out of town, doesn't mean things have to change between us."

"But they will," Ben rebutted. "You'll be off meeting your smart college friends and starting a new life. Holding on to one back here, it's just going to hold you back."

"You really think that's going to happen?"

"I think I've always known. It just didn't really hit me until Hilary was filling out her applications, getting all excited for her new adventure, and I realized that I wasn't going anywhere."

With a smile, Ray put a comforting hand on Ben's shoulder. "Dude, I watched you help turn a rickety car from the eighties into a time machine. You're not an idiot," he said. "So, you're not going to college? You never planned to. You know what you're doing, and you're going to be great at it."

"Yeah, but what if it was a bad plan?" Ben pointed. "I chose a path that gets me left behind. How do I know it'll even get me anywhere?"

For a moment, Ray looked like he was about to throw up his hands in surrender, but instead, he stopped, eyes growing soft as he suddenly stared out to nowhere in particular and made a soft "huh."

Ben scrunched his face. "What is it?"

"I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

"Really?" Ben scoffed, "You're busting out fifth-period English?"

"No, I get it," Ray insisted. "There'll always be a road not taken, and we'll always wonder if we made the wrong choice. But that won't change the fact that the road we do take will still lead us somewhere. Sure, you're staying in Cranston; so what? It doesn't have to be forever. For all I know you'll end up in Florida working on NASCARs, or Monaco fixing F1s."

Then he stopped, pausing with a confused expression.

"I got that right, didn't I?" he asked. "They have Formula One in Monaco?"

Ben couldn't help but laugh at the question, the solemness knocked away by the absurdity. "Yeah," he confirmed. "Yeah, you got that right."

And it wasn't the only thing. College, Cranston, wherever they were going. It wasn't the beginning or end; just another step in a longer journey. For all of them. And none of them knew how it was going to work out.

"I'll be back in Cranston every year for holidays, I'm never going to be gone for long." Ray insisted, before then adding. "And for what it's worth, you're the only one I go to when I'm in trouble. You're one that I'd trust with anything. I mean, you're the only one who knows how I feel about Hilary."

And at that, Ben couldn't help himself, smiling sarcastically as at last turned to face his friend. "Am I though…?"

"Fine," admitted Ray with a sigh. "You're the only person I told. And I'm grateful that you're giving me time to figure that out because I can only imagine weird it is for you. I really value the fact that you haven't said anything to Hilary."

At that, Ben flashed back to an identical conversation, of Hilary pleading with him for silence. "Maybe there's such a thing as too much loyalty," he mumbled.

"What was that?" Ray asked, face narrowing in confusion.

Whoops, maybe too loud.

"I was just wondering if you told Hilary where you're going to college?" Ben back-tracked.

Ray's eyes widened, shocked at the sudden accusation. "W… what are you talking about?"

Smooth.

"Come on dude," laughed Ben, "Are you honestly telling me that you didn't know UC Berkeley was barely an hour's drive from Stanford?"

"And what makes you think I'm planning on Berkley?" Ray replied.

Ben just gave his friend the all-knowing look. "So that wasn't a pamphlet for the psychology program poking out of your backpack the other day?"

Ray opened his mouth but paused, catching the all-knowing look on Ben's face.

"Fine, maybe I am," he sighed in admittance. "Just don't tell Hilary; I don't know that going get in yet. And definitely don't tell her I'm considering psych; otherwise, I'm going to get her 'I was right and you were wrong' dance."

"You don't want to see it?" laughed Ben. "Try being on the receiving end for seventeen years. I'm the reason she perfected it."

The boys both burst out laughing, the cackles echoing into the sky. It wasn't even that funny, and yet at the same time it was infectious, every hoot triggering another like a rolling snowball gaining mass with every tumble. Minutes later, both were on the ground, exhausted from rolling, cheeks sore grinning, sides aching with tears streaming from their eyes. Then at last Ray stood up, and offered Ben a hand.

"So are we cool?" he asked.

"Yeah," Ben smiled, taking the gesture and allowing the Red Ranger to pull him to his feet. "We're cool."

As he came up, he pulled Ray into a hug, both boys squeezing the other tight in affirmation of their friendship. But the moment was ruined as they suddenly heard a sneering voice behind them.

"Aww, look at them," Mileena sneered. "Looks like there's still a spark in the bromance. It makes me sick."

Rolling their eyes, the boys whipped around to see she was backed up by her usual posse of Byte-Bots. But as she stood there menacingly, robots ready to lunge, the boys were neither intimidated nor impressed.

"Did she really just use the word 'bromance'?" Ray asked Ben, ignoring Mileena completely.

"You know, I think she did," Ben agreed. "Honestly, I don't know whether I should be impressed or really weirded out."

As the two boys stood for a moment to consider, Mileena's jaw clutched at the insolence. Then, aware of the rage they were stoking, they turned back to face her, grinning.

"No, we thought about it," Ben decided. "It's definitely weird."

"You little…" Mileena began to growl, only for Ray to cut her off.

"Let me guess," he laughed,"'Get em'?."

"Get them!"

Ray and Ben scattered as the Byte-Bots engaged, leaping aside to sandwich the forces between. With the tree nearby, Ben made for the trunk, cracking a bot back with a kick before planting his feet firmly on the surface. The next didn't let up, charging straight for him with a sword raised high.

Ben didn't waste a second, spinning up and out of the way as the blow came crashing beneath. The blade spliced the trunk, piecing the bark and plunging so deep that was beyond the robot's strength the retract, and leaving it perfectly at the teen's mercy.

Ben tumbled downward, kick spinning like a tornado to smash across the robot's face and send it soaring. With the immediate area clear, Ben's hand snatched to the overhanging branch, swinging to crack his shoes into the chest of another soldier before flipping to balance on the overhang.

"Now fellas, no need to rush," he warned as the Byte-Bots shook their weapons up at him, "Everyone'll get a turn."

His eyes darted across the horde, watching Ray acing toward him with his own group of Byte-Bots. There were too many of them.

Too many to take out alone.

A hand snatched his ankle, griping tight and jerking down in a desperate bit to yank him to the ground. Ben's heart seized, arms flailing wildly as the Byte-Bot for a firmer grip and others joined to reach him.

"Ray?" he called out, "A little help!"

The cry was a moment of distraction, the seizing Byte-Bot tilting to see what Ben was yelling. He took his chance, stamping down to crush the finger and force the robot to release. But it wasn't buying him more than a second. He needed help,. And he needed it now.

Using all his strength, he spun around on the branch, just as Ray's lasers flared into the closest Bot between him and the trunk. Ben didn't even think, dropping flat on his chest against the branch and stretching his hand to his friend. Ray lunged, rolling over the blocking Byte-Bots before running up the tree as his arm snapped to Ben's. With all his might, the Blue Ranger heaved, taking the full weight as the Red swung around and his eyes flashed bursts of crimson beams into the robots.

"Nice moves," Ray congratulated as Ben heaved him up to the branch. Then he noted down to the rest of the robots below. "What do you think about these guys?"

"I think they've waited long enough."

Both grinning, the boys dropped down, hands snapping to the branch to propel them into a swing, their feet planting deep into the robots' chests to send them hurling backward. Landing on the now clear ground, Ray looked to the thicket above, lasers flaring as he cut through the branches.

Then they dived, lunging from harm as the bundles of searing wood came crashing down upon the scrambling robots.

Pleased, the pair shot a look to Mileena.

"She looks lonely," Ben noted. "Should we let her join in the fun?"

"Should probably dress for the occasion first," Ray grinned. "You ready?"

"Oh yeah!"

The boys snapped up their Morphers, moving in complete unison. "Data Squad! Digitize!"

The Morphers burst to life, bodies imbued with power as the visors shunted into place and they stood ready in their suits.

"You got me," Mileena sneered., "I'm just shaking in my boots right now."

"Well not yet, you're not!" Ben replied as his power weapon flashed to his hands, "Hammer Time!"

He charged in first, holding his navy mallet low for the swing. He brought it up, flat face flinging as Mileena stepped from harm. But Ben wasn't done; leaping into a flip while his momentum still carried him, swinging the weapon around for another powerful strike.

This time Mileena's eyes bulged, feet skidding against the grass as she barely dived out of the way. With his target still recovering from the sudden shift, Ben swiftly raised the hammer, bringing it down with all his might.

She dodged, but only just. Handspringing from place, Mileena launched herself into the air as the hammer cracked into the earth and unleashed a massive shockwave. Even as she landed, she stumbled, looking back at Ben with as much annoyance as shock.

"You really expected that to beat me?" she growled.

"No, but this will!"

She'd been so focused on Ben, she hadn't even thought about the Red Ranger. Ray lunged from behind, Power Sword glinting in the sun as the blow connected. Spark sheered across the surface of her armor as Mileena was sent flying. She tumbled to the ground as she landed, eyes seething as the two boys regrouped.

"Works every time," Ben laughed.

High-fiving his partner, Ray turned to the kneeling Mileena. "You sure you want a Round Two?".

"I think it's time I tag out, time to give Tiger-Claw a turn."

The green light flashed, whisking her away to safety. But in place was a different creature; a large cat, its face a horrific snarl as it sheered the long, razor claws on its hands together.

"I'm gonna rip you a new one!" it yelled.

"Eww," groaned Ben, "It looks like Miko had a baby with Freddy Kruger."

"And I did not need that mental image," noted Ray.

But as thy boys braced their weapons, readying for another bout, a thin beam of light shot down the sky. It shrouded the virus in light, its body glowing and pulsating as it began to swell in size. Ben and Ray dived out of the way as Tiger-Claw's whole body filled the park.

Now gigantic, Tiger-Claw stared down at the tiny two Rangers.

"Let's see you claw your way back from this!" it roared, stamping its foot where they were standing.

The boys dived from where they stood as the giant paw crashed down, flipping up to the top of the hill as they stared up at the giant monster.

"Well," Ben decided, "At least now we only have to destroy it once."

"Always looking at the bright side," laughed another voice behind them.

Hilary.

The boys spun around to see the rest of the team running toward them, all morphed at ready.

"Nice to see you started without us," laughed Kyle.

"What can we say?" replied Ben, "We got impatient."

"That Mileena," said Hilary with a shake of her head. "Doesn't she know I have finals to study for?"

"So inconsiderate," Ray agreed.

With the team assembled, Ben took to a moment to run over the Black Ranger; to fix a problem he should never have caused.

"Johnny," he said. "I'm sorry about before. I was being a jerk."

"It's all right," his teammate replied, "I figured you were going through some stuff."

"Aww, look at you," Hilary ribbed. "Growing as a person."

"Ready to take this guy down?" Ray asked as the newly strengthened team gathered in unity.

"Yeah!"

"Zord Powers! Digitize!"

With a burst of light, the seven Zords filled the sky, splitting off into their packs as their limbs whirred and shifted. Ben leaped into the cockpit, the body of his wolf snapping upward to form the legs beside his sister's tiger. Moments later, the team was in the cockpit, the two mighty Megazords stomping forward to face their foe.

"Server Patrol Megazord! Online!"

"Firewall Megazord! Online!"

"Guys, I don't like the look of those claws," commented Jake, "I say we stick to defense."

"Good idea," agreed Ray, "Eagle-Wing Shield, activate!"

The mighty wings of the eagle swung out from the back, snapping into the Megazord's hand as it braced for battle.

"Kyle," Ray explained. "We're going to keep it busy, get your shot ready!"

"On it!"

The Megazord lunged, shield up high as its feet boomed against the ground and the mecha barreled toward the monster. Tiger-Claw struck out, arm swinging wide as its talons sheered against the surface of the shield. Sparks danced off the metal, flying searing shaving flicking up and into Tiger-Killer's eyes.

The perfect opening they needed.

"Kyle! Now!"

"Bison Blasters! Fire!"

The Megazord side-stepped, clearing the way as the twin columns of light burst from the Firewall. As Tiger-Claw stabilized, the rest of the team saw their chance.

"Terabyte Saber!" they cried.

The mighty sword sliced into the virus, carving through the beams to strike against the flesh. Flames burst in all directions, the Server Patrol stumbling back as the explosion rocked against the Zords. But as the flames cleared, smoke rising from remains, the Rangers' jaws dropped in horror.

Tiger-Claw still stood there; beaten and damaged, but still standing.

"What?" Ray realized.

"No way!" gasped Hilary

"That was intense!" Tiger-Claw cackled, "I better do something to cut the tension!"

Before the Server Patrol could move the virus struck in, claws slicing across the chest. The whole machine stumbled back, blazing flechettes flying from the torso as the entire cockpit was consumed with light.

Ben shielded his eyes from the flaring consoles, hands snapping to the console to keep his leg stable.

"Hold on, guys!"

The Firewall thundered in, tackling into Tiger-Claw just as it was raising its arm for the kill. The virus stumbled back, taking a crack to the chest while off balance. But its moment of weakness was short-lived.

"You don't seem to get it!" it roared. "Here, this will help the message cut through!"

It swung up its hands, both sets of claws carving across the body as Kyle's own machine stepped back.

"Guys," Doc warned through the coms, "Neither Megazord can take another hit like that!"

"What can we do?" Ray demanded, "It took everything we had like it was nothing!"

But Ben's mind was already moving, to something his sister had said only that morning.

"We'll do it the way we always do," he decided. "Together."

Ray looked back, nodding as if to confirm the proud grin beneath his helmet. Ben looked over to Hilary.

"You said you were working on a new Megazord build right?" He asked.

"Yeah," Hilary confirmed. "But we only just finished the calculations! We haven't had a chance to run a test!"

"No test like a road test," Ben pointed out. "What do you say, Ray?"

The Red Ranger nodded. "What do you think, Doc?"

"I think in a moment it won't matter if it's tested or not," came the reply. "I say go for it!"

Ray snapped his hand to the coms. "You get that Kyle?"

"Loud and clear!" the Security Ranger replied. "Ready when you are."

Ray punched at the controls, and every Ranger's console shifted to confirm the activation. In perfect unison, they slammed their hands down on the switch to confirm. "Let's bring them together!"

The two machines burst apart, splitting back into their individual Zords as the mighty mechanized warriors vanished. But they didn't stop moving from there; shifting and shunting instead at lightning speed as they drew closer in once more.

The Firewall began to reform, the humanoid Battlezord standing ready for its components. The tiger and wolf once again snapped around, bodies folding outward to wrap around the legs like armor. Above, the Bison and Elephant Zords snapped to the chest, armoring the front and back as the bovine's cannons snapped into place down the arms. Then at last came the lion and eagle, wings folding to be a grand breastplate as the pride king's mane split in two to form a new helmet around the head.

Ben grinned as he looked around the new cockpit, this one even roomier with all six Rangers sitting ready. With a final hiss, their new machine stomped forward, ready to rumble with the behemoth.

"CtrlAlt-Delete Megazord!" the six of them called together, "Online!"

From the end of the street, Tiger-Claw flailed its arms as its claws sharpened against each other.

"Big deal!" taunted the monster, "Seen one Megazord, seen them all!"

"Speaking of seeing," Ben said to Ray. "I want to know what this baby can do!"

"Right!

The consoles burst life, systems engaging as power began to flow to the arms. At the wrists, the Bison Blasters shunted outwards, protruding further as the barrels began to glow.

"The Deleter Blasters are armed and ready," Jake informed them.

"You guys think you're so scary!" Tiger-Claw screamed. "I'll cut you down to size!"

"We'll see about that!" Ray retorted, "Time to take out this kitty's litter!"

The virus roared as it lunged, claws poised for a direct strike. But the Rangers didn't even flinch, arms raising in eager anticipation.

"Deleter Blasters!" they called, "Fire!"

The barrels on each arm erupted in beams of light, technicolor rays spinning together like a pair of blazing drills. The rainbows blasted into Tiger-Claw, piercing right through the chest and bursting out the side, light completely consuming its body as it ripped through from the inside out.

"Oh no!" it screamed, tumbling backward as the last of the energy faded from the smoking barrels. "I didn't make the cut!"

Then his body exploded, detonating into a great column of fire that incinerated every atom. As flames crackled over the ashes, the CtrlAlt-Delete turned around, blasters lowered to stand tall as the city's loyal guardian.

"Well, Hilary," Ben laughed. "I think we can call that test a success."

"We'd never have tried it if it wasn't for you," the Yellow Ranger pointed out.

"Yeah," Ray congratulated. "Good on you man."

As he looked out at the city skyline, a view he didn't think he'd ever get tired of, Ben smiled.

Yeah, he decided, I did all right.

"So Kelgar has been taking a trip down the Great American Road?" Hilary clarified.

It was barely a day after the fight with Tiger-Claw, and Kyle had asked all of them to meet up after school. Meeting on the bleachers as the day ended, the Security Ranger filed them on the trail that he and Doc had been following.

"Looks like it," he confirmed. "And I think Mileena's been doing her best to keep us focused on her so we wouldn't notice. That's why her attacks have seemed so weird lately."

"I've got to admit," Jake conceded. "It worked. If Johnny hadn't had that lucky break at the paper, we never would have figured it out."

"But why is he even doing this at all?" Ray pointed out. "I can't imagine he's scouting out holiday spots."

"I think it has something to do with these," said Kyle, reaching into his jacket to produce a folded piece of paper. It was a printout of three different images, each of them a different weapon of strange design. "One of these was in the museum the night it was attacked. And there's another two in Angel Grove."

"All right, so Mileena's got some fancy new weapons," Johnny scoffed. "We can still take her."

But Kyle shook his head. "The problem isn't the weapons. It's who they belonged to. All three were once wielded by warriors who at some time fought against teams of Power Rangers."

"Okay," Jake reasoned as he took it all in. "But they were taken out, right? It's not like they're all wandering around the galaxy, waiting for another chance to relive their glory?"

Kyle's face remained stony. "When I was under Gideon's control, I watched Kelgar use a device called a Scanner. It was designed to read an object so that it could be recreated digitally. But once it was scanned, anything attached to the object could be extracted; including remnant DNA."

Beside him, Hilary's eyes widened. "Those weapons would be covered in it!"

"They're not after the weapons," Ben breathed. "They're after the wielders."

Ben shot a look at Ray, eyes narrowing as ran the calculations through his head, trying to form the beginnings of a plan.

"Okay," he said, "so Gideon's trying to expand his workforce; bring three others into his team."

"Four," Johnny corrected. "Kelgar went to Reefside remember? The Dino Thunder Rangers were around when I was a kid, maybe he was looking for something from one of their enemies."

"It might be more than that," Kyle also corrected. "Reefside was also the last place anyone saw the full team of the Ninja Storm rangers, along with a number of their enemies. Kelgar might have planned to pick up another two-for-one bargain, just like he did in Angel Grove."

One by one their faces dropped, slowly dawning on them what Gideon was planning.

"Five resurrected warriors?" Hilary finally dared to say aloud.

"And I bet every one of them an axe to grind with the Power Rangers," Ray concluded. "We better get the warehouse."

"Benson thinks he's got a plan," said Kyle, "but he's got no idea whether it's going to-."

He never finished the sentence.

Lightning split the sky, crashing into the ground before exploding at the feet. The force shattered the bleachers, flinging the six from their feet as it scattered them wide across the stands.

Ben felt the bench crunch as he landed, a fresh bruise swelling from the impact as his vision started spinning. Steadily, he clambered up, feeling the blur recede as the others staggered upwards too.

"Everyone all right?" Ray asked.

"What even was that?" Johnny demanded.

But Ben's caught a shape at the edge of his vision, and as he slowly looked up, his eyes widened as he gazed upon the culprit.

"Uh… guys?"

The others gasped as too looked up to see their attacker. Not Mileena, not Kelgar. Not even Gideon. Instead stood a figure that Ben had been staring at merely days beforehand as skimmed Hilary's ranger chronicles over her shoulder.

He stood tall, clad in golden armor with two great wings protruding from his back. In one hand gripped a sword, with the same shining hue of his covering. His face was a deep, navy blue, twisted in the resemblance of a baboon. His fanged mouth twitched into a sinister smile as he stared down at them with sinister red eyes.

"RANGERS!" he roared. "I AM THE GREATEST WARRIOR OF ALL TIME, THE HERALD OF YOUR DESTRUCTION! YOU ARE BEING GIVEN BUT ONE CHANCE TO SURRENDER TO THE MIGHTY GIDEON. YOU WILL NOT WIN, FOR YOU ARE ALL ONLY HUMAN! AND NO MERE HUMAN IS A MATCH FOR GOLDAR!"

The very utterance of his name sent fear jolting through Ben's chest as if hearing out loud confirmed the truth he so desperately wanted to deny. As the Rangers all hobbled together, Goldar leveled his sword toward them.

"Prepare to surrender, Rangers," he sneered. "Or prepare for your destruction!"

And then, just as suddenly as he'd appeared, he vanished in a flash of green, leaving bruised rangers to stew on exactly what had just hit them.

"Whatever Gideon's planning…" Ray stammered as they stared at the now-empty space above. "It's here."
