A big, big thanks to everyone returning for updates and checking out my stories. I took some time away from posting this story, but I am very much still writing. The problem I have is that I'm getting ahead of myself, and it isn't coming to me in chronological order. I start writing on a future episode, but I'm not done with the current one. Muses are frustrating, aren't they? Anywho here is the long-awaited part 2 of Usual Suspects as you will find out, we learn a bit more about Kate's familial background.

Thanks all!

Chapter 18: The Usual Suspects Part: 2

Kate released a breath as she ran both hands through her hair stressfully. She'd been pacing over the small space the lock-up cell had offered her for the last forty-five minutes now. She knew from earlier that morning she'd be getting a visitor, she just wasn't sure when, and it was eating at her nerves now. Her cell was at the the second to last at the end of a narrow hallway, everything was dingy, concrete, and flat grey. Pete wasn't kidding when he told her he'd arrest her for assaulting a police officer. The police were quick to take her mug shot, fingerprint her, and book her when Pete had pulled her into the station with him, she'd grumbled under her breath through the whole process. Earlier she'd made a slight attempt at laying down over the hardened plastic bench that was within the dwelling of the cell, but as she had started to drift off the memories of Castiel and Uriel smiting the guy that she had been prepared to blow off some steam with continued flashing before her eyes. The image of the guy's face was burned into her retinas, it haunted her in her sleep. The memory of his black, hollowed-out eye sockets sent a shiver down her spine. She groaned as she lowered herself to sit on the bench leaning her back against the cool concrete wall.

While being locked down so to speak, wasn't quite a new experience for her. Being locked within a jail cell was. She had led a quiet and inconspicuous life in her world. She'd never dreamed of being in the position she was currently, and if she had never been yanked from her alternate reality she probably never would have to. Kate pulled her legs up and wrapped her arms around her knees, her anxiety was kicking in. She hadn't been under lock and key since she was younger and her dad had just died. Kate's memories of her dad were here and there. She could still remember flashes of their times working on his car together, and certain moments from everyday life but she couldn't remember his death. Just that all of a sudden her life felt like someone punched a hole through a part of it. It was as if a part of her was missing after he was gone, and she just couldn't handle it. All she had to pass the time right now was her memories, the ones she had left of her old life anyways. The more she sat and tried to call up memories of her dad's death, the looser her grasp on them felt. It was like trying to catch fog, the moment she thought she had it; the memory just slipped right through her fingers.

"Hey," Kate jumped as Pete's voice rang out echoing off the concrete walls. "You got another name you want to give me there, girly?" Kate's head snapped in his direction as she blinked at him unsure of how to answer that question.

"Uh… no?" She asked in response. She knew her name- that much about herself she was sure of.

"Well, I punched you into the system and, there is no Kaydence Halston. She doesn't exist anywhere, so either you gave us a fake name with some bogus IDs, or you're a figment of my imagination." Kate paused at Pete's statement, mildly wondering how much of his own statement she could get him to believe. She knew she didn't belong in this world, but to hear someone actually question her existence aloud put her off a bit. She sighed heavily, knowing there was no way for her to explain it to the guy so that he would understand.

"The weirder part is when I went through your pockets. You apparently go by many different names. Do any of these ones sound familiar, Linda? Josette? Rebecca? Maybe one of those will pull up more in our system?" He questioned. Kate sighed again. She had a feeling this cop wasn't going to let up without an answer, but she had none to give.

"You wouldn't believe me even if I did explain it." She told him tiredly.

"Well, why don't you try me and find out." He said trailing off, still waiting for an answer. Kate decided that he wouldn't be able to understand her predicament and opted to not answer him. "How 'bout this? While you think about the answer. I'm going to take you up to interrogation; a detective is waiting there to question you." He said simply before opening the sliding cell door. He held his hand out.

"No cuffs this time?" Kate quipped as Pete made to unlock the cell door and it clanged open.

"Not unless I need them," Pete replied begrudgingly as he gruffly pulled her with him down the hallway and out towards the offices and lobby.

Kate was seated at a table and left alone in a bare room. She knew the glass mirror across from her was actually a one-way window. She was unsure exactly what the cops were planning on questioning her for. She'd been arrested for assaulting Pete, which in reality was a gross overstatement of what had taken place.

"Hello Kate," She turned hearing a familiar voice. Giles slid into the room standing tall, with a briefcase in his hand, down at his side.

"Giles?" She questioned her eyebrows moving upwards in surprise.

"Where's Sam, and Dean?" The words flew out of her mouth before she could form them in her mind.

"They're fine. Not happy, hence why I'm here, but fine. They said to tell you they're on the job… whatever that means." Giles shrugged. "They convinced me to rep your case." He told her as he took a seat across from her laying the business case down on the table between them.

"I've got a question for you." Kate interrupted, not really registering his words to her. "But, I'm not sure who, exactly, is listening…"

"Okay… Well, the cameras are off, and the room next door is vacant. Attorney; Client privilege." Giles stated slowly. "But, this case should be fairly easy to throw out. They've got nothing to throw at you for evidence-," Giles said in answer.

"No. It's not about that," Kate stated, her voice blunt and, deadpanned. "What I wanna know is if you killed Claire."

Her demand seemed to make Giles hesitate, he had been scrounging through his suitcase but had now stopped. His dark brown eyes peered at her over the open case now. He glanced over at the window at the door before leaning forwards, towards her. "I thought you said Pete was the one that had killed her?" He questioned.

"I did," Kate answered, her tone just as hushed. "But, now? I"m not so sure. He said-. Well, he told me that she was an undercover…" Kate explained. "That was new information. He also admitted that they'd gotten together, but nothing about using-,"

"Well, why else would he have taken the drugs from lock up then?" Giles cut her off. His voice was low, but the seriousness in his tone made her pause. "There's only one reason drugs go missing from the evidence room in a precinct. They were used." Tony finished quickly.

Kate held her silence. She knew that money wasn't the only factor here, while the episode never detailed the drugs being used, just sold. She'd assumed while watching it that for a cop to have stolen the drugs must also have been the one addicted to them. Kate exhaled a heavy breath, she needed to talk to Sam and Dean. Her mental map of this particular episode was steadily blowing up in her face, she also reminded herself that she was soon to expect a visitor in lock up. She could feel her anxiety steadily climbing as the night continued on.

"Do you know why they pulled me in here for questioning?" She asked him suddenly changing the subject.

"Questioning?" She watched as confusion clouded over Giles's sharp features. She just nodded still waiting for a response, but at his confusion, she didn't think she'd get one.

"No, I- I don't understand what they'd even question you about. Look, do you have anything to use as collateral?"

"Collateral? What?"

"For Bail, Kate," Giles continued quickly.

Kate's mouth hung open, as her brain was processing his words; she didn't have a single thing of worth in her name. She shook her head not able to answer verbally.

Tony seemed to sigh stressfully. "I can try to post bail, but a bondsman is going to want something to ensure you show up to court."

"Tony," Kate began, "You don't understand. I- I can't-." She cut herself off knowing she wouldn't be able to explain anything of her background to him.

"I know." He said his tone was low and his eyes glanced around the room before he continued. "I did some research after you were arrested. Not that I needed to. The uh-. The guys you were with filled me in on things. Claire, the spirit? Among other things…" He trailed off.

Kate had put two and two together. Sam and Dean must have told Giles what was happening, really happening.

"While this is all very out of my element. Dealing with cops, and the law… is in my element so… I'll handle this. I'll pull some favors and get you out. I guess I owe you that much." Kate met Giles's stare and she could see the seriousness in his expression. Sam and Dean must have told him that he was set to die at Pete's hands and it would have happened tonight if it hadn't been for Kate.

Suddenly the door to the room opened and Pete along with a woman entered the room. "I'm surprised to see you here, Tony," Pete stated. His eyebrows raised in apparent surprise.

"I'm here to represent, Ms. Halston."

"Well, regardless of whether or not that is her name. That might be a problem now. You have a conflict of interest in this case, my friend." Kate could practically feel the tension in the room now, Pete and Giles almost seemed to be sizing up the other. Kate could feel her muscles tensing in response to Pete's words. She was hoping that by stopping one murder the other wouldn't have happened but as usual. She put her hopes up too high.

"Your client is being charged with conspiracy to murder," Pete said while crossing his arms.

"Pete. Don't-." The woman interrupted, she held a serious expression. Kate recognized her as Diana. Pete's partner. The one that had worked with Sam throughout the episode to uncover what happened to Claire. The one that ended up killing Pete at the end of the episode. Her long brown hair was straight to her shoulders, and she was a petite woman in comparison to Pete or Giles. If Kate stood she imagined the woman to be a couple of inches shorter than her.

"Yeah, alright, Diana. Tony, perhaps we should talk outside." Pete relented with a sigh. "It's personal, I'm afraid."

"I don't understand-," Giles began, confused. He was obviously uncomfortable being alone with Pete. Kate just hoped that her lawyer was smart enough not to go anywhere completely alone with him. Kate knew then that they were about to charge her with the conspiracy of murdering Giles's wife. She spoke up then.

"How could I possibly have planned to murder anyone if I've been stuck here?" The two detectives shared an uneasy glance.

"Go on. You two talk outside; I'll stay." Diana said to the two guys.

"Please explain to me who I am supposed to have conspired to murder?" Kate questioned as the door shut behind Giles and Pete.

"Why don't you fill in the blanks for me?" Diana questioned as she sat across from Kate, a sudden sense of sarcasm dripping in her tone while focus overcame her narrow features.

"I would love to help, but I'm afraid that I. don't. know," Kate responded not wanting to spill what it was she knew of. It would only serve to make her look more guilty.

"Well, we have your partners. They're also being held for questioning down this very hall," Diana explained. Kate couldn't keep her frustration from spilling over into her facial expression. She never was any good at a poker face. "I'm sure one of them would be more than happy to take a deal." Diana trailed off. Kate couldn't help but scoff at that statement. She'd seen the show and knew Sam and Dean had gotten out of much tighter spots than this. The fact that this woman thought they were cornered and left with no options but to play ball made Kate choke back a laugh.

"Look, I know that you aren't the one to commit the crime. Your prints aren't pulling up a single ID in our system, for all we know you're listed as a missing person. We pulled up the other guys in our system, and I gotta tell ya' we got a lot of possible hits. One of them being a murder charge out of Missouri. You from there by chance?" Diana questioned, her eyes trained over Kate's face.

Kate fought to keep her face stolid. This conversation had taken a surprising turn, she hadn't expected the cops to try and connect her to Dean's false Missouri charges. She supposed it would look suspicious though, with her not having any shred of an ID, not any next of kin listed, and nothing but fake credit cards to her name still… she hadn't anticipated this.

"You don't need to be scared anymore. We're here to help you." Diana began, her voice taking on a softer tone as her face took on a more gentle expression.

"I want my lawyer back in here." That was all Kate said.

"I don't think he'll be coming back in here. You see the murder victim was his wife." Diana stated. Kate had figured that's what happened, but she still felt shocked at the statement. She was annoyed that the guys hadn't just stayed away, she'd given them ample warning, Dean especially. "Well, then I'd like to go back to lock up while waiting for his decision," Kate stated simply as she stood from her chair slowly.

"I'd really advise against that," Diana said trying to reason with Kate more to talk.

"I appreciate the advice, but I'd like to hear that from my lawyer rather than a detective looking to throw any person in jail to shut the case," Kate stated as she glanced over the one-way window. "I wouldn't leave your partner out there alone for too long," Kate advised Diana cryptically. She could see confusion cloud over her face, but she stood up to escort Kate back to her holding cell.

Kate was surprised to see a figure in the cell next door from hers, she was wary of whether it was a person drunk tanked, or otherwise. She really wasn't in the mood to have to fend off anybody from talking to her. Diana led her back to her cell silently and shut her in before walking out not sparing a glance at the other person.

Kate had seen the precinct when she came in, it was a smaller office. They had maybe two interrogation rooms and two lock-up cells. "Hey," Kate spun around to see Dean cuffed and seated at the bench closest to her cell.

"Dean?" She asked still in disbelief. She moved over towards the shared wall and slid to her knees on the bench on her side. "Are you kidding me with this? Why are you here? I warned you specifically not to go to the house-."

"We save people, Kate. You know that." Dean interrupted.

"Yeah? Well, Karen is still dead, and look at where you are now. Was it worth it?" Kate snapped at him. It was bad enough that she'd been arrested, but he really didn't need to get himself arrested too. He chose not to respond to her.

"Where's Sam?" She asked.

"Probably getting arrested himself. The lady cop found the hotel matchbook in my jacket." Dean shrugged. Kate huffed. She wondered idly what the point was for her to warn them if they weren't going to listen.

"Did you find out anything else?" Kate asked.

"Uhh, yeah. They're all basically guilty, and like you said earlier at the hotel. It looks like this Pete guy is trying to clean up his mess now." Dean explained.

"I'm not so sure about that," Kate said slowly, her hands now gripping the bars. "Look, Dean. I think Pete might actually be the good guy, I just-. I need to know more, but there's nothing I can do from in here."

"What?" He asked disbelief in his voice, "You think Giles killed his own wife?" He had tried to turn around to face her as far as he could, but his hands were cuffed to shackles on his feet so his mobility was limited.

"I- I don't know. When Pete arrested me in the car, he said that he'd had a relationship with Claire and hinted that Giles killed her due to an undercover operation they were in on together."

"He said that? That Giles killed Claire?" Dean asked, now leaning back against the metal bars. Kate could tell that he was uncomfortable in his current predicament.

"Well, no, but, who else could he be referring to?"

"Seems like this guy knows how to throw people off of his trail," Dean stated as he released a breath. "We figured out that Claire leaves a sort of calling card as she appears to each person. Dana Schulps. It was all over at Karen and Giles's place, and Gile's office."

"Dana Schulps is an anagram. At least it was in the show." Kate replied quickly as she moved to sit on her rear, her knees growing too uncomfortable against the hard plastic of the bench. Her side was pressed against the bars that separated her and Dean, her head leaning against them. Her brain was beginning to fatigue, and mentally she was drained. "It was really a street name, Ashland. There are some extra letters in there that don't mean anything. Claire is buried behind a brick wall in the basement where she was last seen. Pete killed her in the episode." Kate explained tiredly.

Dean had remained silent, just listening to her words. "You gotta get the message to Sam. I don't know how, but he escapes." Kate finished. "He's the one that will figure it out, him and Pete's partner Diana."

"And, how am I gonna do that exactly?" Dean questioned. Kate could hear the sarcasm dripping with his every word. "I'm pretty well trussed up right now." He finished with a shake of the cuffs on his wrists.

"Your lawyer," Kate answered simply. "Have you seen your lawyer yet?" She asked feeling hopeful as her brain remembered that he was the one to send Sam the encoded anagram. "Send him with a note to Sam about Ashland."

"What're you gonna do?" Dean questioned, his voice still low. Kate had become preoccupied with the sound of a door opening down the hall. "Kate?" Dean asked, she could feel him moving through the bars as he pulled away and twisted to turn around to face off with her. "I'm still figuring that part out," She muttered as she watched Pete enter the hallway. Dean's attention was also on the newcomer as Pete stopped at Dean's cell door. "Your public defender is here for you. Let's go, pal." Kate heard Dean's shackles clinking as he moved slowly but steadily toward Pete.

Dean winked at her in his typical Winchester fashion as he was shoved down the hall by Pete and out the door.

Kate sat down, again, trying to mull over any sort of solution to get them all out of there, but she was grasping at straws. She knew that in her exhausted state that she probably wouldn't be able to come up with anything feasible. When suddenly a dark figure appeared in the far corner of her cell, grabbing her attention. The surprise pulled her out of her thoughts but she had been expecting him since she'd first been locked into this place.

"Uriel," Kate greeted. Her voice had broke mid-word, displaying the fear she felt at his presence.

"So Kaydence, have you come to a decision pertaining to our last conversation?"

"Wh- where's Castiel?" She asked ignoring his question altogether. She knew from the last time that Uriel had gotten physical with her at her lack of obedience, and she really wasn't looking to go another round against an angel. At least with Cas around she had hopes of someone maintaining a semblance of control over Uriel's erratic behavior. She already knew he was a Lucifer fanatic; just as bad as the demons were.

"He's seeking revelation," Uriel replied, his tone ice cold and his face void of emotion. "Seems we don't know what to do with you; not here on earth, or in heaven. You're only real use to us is to aid in the coming war."

Kate's eyes looked around the small cell she was in but had already known that nothing here could be used against an angel of the lord, so she'd have to be careful with what she'd say to him. "So tell me, Kaydence," As he spoke, Uriel made his way closer from across the cell. Kate hadn't liked him using her full name, nor the way he had said it. "If you continue your refusal, what's to stop me from just solving our little problem here and now?" Kate's breathing had quickened in response to Uriel threatening her, she could feel the muscles in her body tightening, readying to fight or flight. Everything happened so fast, at his last word, Kate caught a glimpse of his angel blade unsheathing from his sleeve. Kate simply reacted as she curled in on herself, her knees came up to her chest and she pressed her face into her knees, she had half expected a blow, but peeked up she found an unfamiliar figure standing between her and Uriel.

Uriel had been thrown into the metal bars of the cell door with a loud clanging sound, however, he was up in an instant, and he now stood toe-to-toe with the figure dressed in black before her. "You dare to show your face here? After being given a second chance at redemption?" The look that had overcome his face was terrifying, she could see his eyes flashing that familiar blue color, displaying the power he'd tapped into in his rage.

"We had a deal, Uriel." The guy practically hissed out through his teeth as he blocked Uriel's swipe at him with an angel blade. Kate could see the figure was dressed in casual clothes. Dark-washed jeans paired with a simple black T-shirt, and a long overcoat, also black.

Kate suddenly couldn't tear her eyes away from the newcomer. She hadn't stared at his face straight on, but she dimly recognized that voice. Although, it couldn't be. It just wasn't possible. If Kate hadn't already dismissed the possibility of this universe being a dream, she'd have thought she was asleep now.

Kate watched as Uriel moved at lightning speed, and his outstretched arm landed a punch against the man's face. Kate backed away from the fighting as much as she could within the limited confines of the cell, but that wasn't allowing much room, if she wanted to put some real distance between her and the fighting angels, she'd have to cross both of them and end up behind Uriel. She wasn't sure if she could move even if she needed to. She was in a state of shock, her brain was the only thing reminding her that she needed to intake air.

The angels continued their fighting before a sudden stillness occurred, Kate could see both men clearly, the guy dressed completely in black had his back to Kate still, and Uriel was heavily leaning against the man's shoulder. Kate couldn't see it from her angle but she knew that an Angel blade had stabbed Uriel.

Kate shouted as she quickly turned to face the opposite direction, as the familiar blinding light shot out all around them; the guttural sound of Uriel screaming continued to echo in her ears. Kate was mildly surprised at how long it had taken for him to die, given how quickly the demon had been smote, but she supposed a stab wound was probably a slower way to die.

Kate whipped back around to stare at her rescuer, she still was having trouble wrapping her mind around it, but she found herself staring into the face of someone she'd thought she had lost long ago. "Dad?" She heard her breathless, stunned voice ask.

"Kate." Was all he'd responded with.

"Wha-?" She began, "How-? Are you-?" She kept starting to form questions, but her brain was having difficulty forming words as it wasn't processing what was right in front of her. "What is this?" She questioned aloud. She was visibly stressed out. Kate felt her heart hammering in her chest and her eyes were wide trying to take in every detail of the person in front of her, looking for any minor flaw in what she saw from her memory.

"Kaydence. I know this has to be very confusing." The taller man before her held one hand out in front of him, his words were calm, and his voice held a soothing tone.

"Confusing?" She questioned, her voice jumping up a couple of octaves at her outrage. Uriel, she had expected tonight, but this? Nothing could've prepared her for this moment. "I- I don't-. I didn't-. How-?" Kate couldn't fathom the thought, let alone for words.

"I'll explain everything, but we have to go. Now." Kate's eyes searched the familiar blue ones before her, she knew them to be her fathers, he had the same mop of dark brown hair. It appeared as though he hadn't aged a day since she last saw him. Yeah, because he died. You don't age in death. Kate told herself. She pressed herself up against the bars as her father made a move in her direction.

"Don't," Was all she said.

"If I don't get you out of here, we are going to be in a far worse situation, Katie." Kate saw her father's sharp features pull into a serious expression at his own words. He held out his hand again. Awaiting her decision to accept it or not.

"What about Dean and Sam?" She asked, her voice soft. Kate saw her father's face. He knew that he didn't have the time to sit and argue with his daughter. The other Angels would be there at any moment, he knew exactly where the darker man's counterpart was, and he knew that the angel Castiel wouldn't be willing to wait and hear out any explanations for Uriel's death.

"They will be fine. The other angels don't want them, Kate. They want you." Her father reasoned with her. Kate could see the edge of panic in her dad's eyes and took his hand just as she saw Cas appear behind him.

In what felt like a blink, Kate felt her body land gently on the concrete ground. She gasped in a breath she hadn't even realized she was holding in as her father let her hand fall from his. Kate looked around surprised to find they were in a darkened parking lot, in the dark. "Wha-? Where are we?" She asked him.

"I brought you to where you needed to be." Was all he said, cryptically.

"What does that even mean?" She questioned, through the initial shock Kate felt at his sudden appearance, she could now feel her anger rising. I thought he'd been dead all these years. "Why are we standing here in an empty parking lot? Why are you even here? You- you're supposed to have died." Kate could feel a lump forming in her throat, but she fought hard to swallow it down. She was not about to cry in front of him.

"I- I thought I did." Her dad answered quietly. "It certainly felt like I had." He finished his voice low. He took in a steadying breath and looked over at Kate. "I felt like I had every day since I lost you all."

"No, you don't get to play pity card-," Kate began but he moved closer to her and continued talking.

"Please, Kaydence. Just let me explain. I promise you will have your say, but-."

"And," Kate continued further, pointedly ignoring his request for silence, "You're a freaking Angel?! I don't understand any of this!" Kate's voice had grown in volume along with her indignation.

She suddenly felt a strong grip wrap around her upper arms as her father pulled her in closer to him. "Then allow me to explain it to you, please." Kate hesitated as her mouth opened to form a witty retort, but she thought better of it as she realized she had been lifted off of her feet entirely. Her dad slowly, but sternly returned her feet to solid ground before he took in a breath.

"It's been 11 years," Her dad began. Kate scoffed and shook her head as her arms crossed over her chest. "I didn't know how to reach out after I was pulled back to my home in heaven."

"Home? In heaven?" Kate questioned, her voice clear with suspicion.

"Yes, Katie. I- I met your mom after I'd been ejected so to speak from this universe. The angels were… warring. They still are, it's never ended…" Her dad took in a deep breath. "In the years before you and your brothers were born, I was here. I've existed for a… very long time. It wasn't until god decided to take a sabbatical that angels began fighting over who should rule over creation. I fought at one time for my own name, but it got me on the wrong side of some powerful angels, and thus… I was sent into the non-magical universe."

"Why didn't you just perform the spell to get back?" Kate questioned as she looked around herself again, they appeared to be at an impound lot. The car. She thought quickly putting two and two together.

"The universe you're from was non-magical, plus it was difficult to get my hands on any of the ingredients I needed to get back. So, I was just stuck…" He trailed off.

"...And, then you met Mom," Kate stated, her eyes staring at nothing in particular as her brain was hazily putting the pieces to the puzzle together.

He nodded in response, "I wanted to reach out from the moment I felt your presence here, but I couldn't. The angels had been on high alert from the moment you got here. Your knowledge of what's coming is-. Well, needless to say, you have Angels and demons, both falling over themselves to get their hands on you."

Kate had tuned out the obvious last part of her father's statement as she slowly began to lock eyes with him. The familiar eyes were dizzying to her, but she pushed through to say, "You've known I was here? From the beginning?"

The taller man opened his mouth to answer but shut it quickly. He must have known there was nothing he could say to quell the uneasiness Kate could feel welling up within her chest. She'd been stuck here in this godforsaken place for months and her dad had been here the whole time. Knowing she was stuck and unable to return home. Knowing she was in danger, and yet he hadn't intervened. "You knew I was here this whole time?" She asked him slowly, her brain's processing of everything seemed to be as slow as molasses. She felt like she was trying to swim upstream at the moment. "It's been months!" Her voice was louder than she'd intended, but her thoughts on where she was and what she needed to do were scattered.

"I know, and I'm so s-."

"Don't you dare tell me that you're sorry." She spat out venously as she spun away from him. She came face to face with the front end of the Impala. He brought me to the impound lot. She thought to herself.

"Look, Katie, you can be mad at me for as long as you want, but you need to listen to me." She heard her father continue as she began to walk away from him towards the driver's seat of the car. "It wasn't just an angelic presence that I felt in that police department tonight." She paused now, her hand gripping the door handle.

"The demons?" Kate questioned her voice tight with panic. "They're here? Now?"

Her father nodded in response as he moved in closer to her. "You need to move; you can't stay in one place for too long, especially not on your own." He told her quickly.

"You- you aren't coming with me?" She asked suddenly, feeling like she was losing him all over again.

"I cannot. The angels need to be led away, and given what I just did back at the police department; I'll be public enemy number one." Her father stated quickly. "If you know what's going to happen, then save your friends and get moving. Trust me when I say this city is going to be crawling with angels and demons tonight. Be careful." He stated.

"Hey, da-." She paused in calling out to him, using the word dad had come naturally, but felt foreign on her tongue.

An awkward moment passed between the pair, but he turned back to face her. "I'm not even sure what to call you…" Kate trailed off as that realization hit her.

"Azrael." He replied, with his face as warm as a brick wall. "My name is Azrael. If the term dad is too uncomfortable…" He trailed off. Kate was quick to pick up on Azrael's uneasiness. She was having a hard time fitting this angel from Supernatural into her childhood memories, even though his face was the same as her father's whom she could remember growing up with. It did nothing to deter the image of the powerful creature before her. Her father seemed to send out a newfound coldness that Kate was still unaccustomed to.

"You need to go, Katie." That was the first raw emotion Kate was able to pick up in his tone, she could see the pain overcome his facial features, and hear the strain in his voice as he fought back his emotions.

"I need you to hide me. There's a spell. I've seen it in the tv show back home. Enochian sigils, they are branded on -." Kate explained in a breathless and hurried fashion.

"It's painful." Her father said suddenly, in a warning. He obviously knew what she was referring to.

"So is hunting." Kate pointed out with sarcasm, "But, I've been doing that for months now." Her dad didn't say anything at her slight dig at his lack of action on knowing she was here. He just took a couple of steps closer and extended his arm.

"Don't say I did not warn you." He said before she felt his hand hover over her heart. Even though she'd known the burning pain was coming, it still knocked the wind out of her. She gasped in pain at the heated sensation deep in her bones. She hunched over, her hands instantly leaning down on her knees for support. Gasping in some steadying breaths, eventually, Kate was able to straighten up and looked at her dad. She'd had so many more questions for him. So much more to say, but she knew that now wasn't safe; for either of them.

"Now, you need to go." Was all he said as Kate caught a flash of metallic in the hand he held out. She reached out and grabbed the car keys before turning and pulling open the door of the Impala. "Hang on, take this too." She paused as she turned to face him again, looking down she saw he held out an angel blade. Kate hesitated, her hand stilling over the blade. "Are- are you sure-?" She asked him. He simply nodded. "You need this more than I do, plus Uriel won't be using it any time soon." Kate nodded as her shaky hand enclosed the angel blade. She released a breath she hadn't been aware she was holding, but when she turned back to look up at him; her father had vanished. Kate was quick to get in the Impala and slammed the driver-side door closed.

She really wished she'd had more time to relish the feeling of sitting in the driver seat of the infamous baby, but she knew that by this point it was dangerous for her to be alone. Especially if her dad's warnings were true, and she didn't want to tangle with an angel and demons on the same day. Kate ran her hands lightly over the leatherbound steering wheel before she moved to slide the key into the ignition. Baby came to life with a loud rumble, and Kate quickly checked her bearings and placed her foot on the brake before she shifted the gear selector into drive. All she knew was that she needed to get to Ashland Street. Kate huffed knowing perfectly well, that driving the Impala out of there would upset Dean as she'd have to drive through the automated gate arm.

After driving around cluelessly around Baltimore for the better part of an hour, Kate stopped and was able to ask a gas station attendant for directions to Ashland Street. She didn't have her phone or anything else she'd had with her earlier that night as they were all left in the police station, not even her jacket. Kate was able to pull off down a side alley and park the Impala there, out of sight from the road. She knew that the impound company had probably already reported it missing to the local authorities, and Kate was setting out to walk on foot from here on out for the night.

She popped open the trunk and grabbed some odds and ends from the boys' weaponry collection before continuing on down the road toward the abandoned building where Claire's body was entombed in. She just hoped and prayed that everything went like in the show so that he would be there for her to find Diana.

Kate happened upon the building, and the first thing she noticed was its vacantness, unlike its neighboring counterparts. In her walk down this way, she very quickly realized she was not in a very good part of Baltimore, so the quicker she made it inside the building; the better. Finding that the front door was broken into she moved quickly, casting a sparing glance around the street to check for anyone following. Pushing the door shut behind her Kate was engulfed in the darkness of the building. It may have appeared deserted on the outside, but inside?

The area appeared to be a refuge for those without a place to go. Broken furniture and couches were arranged along the edge of the building. Garbage was scattered around, and Kate could hear the scurrying of small creatures. She stopped, regretting not having her jacket to protect her from the conditions of this place. She was wearing a simple short-sleeved shirt, distressed jeans, and boots. The chilly, damp air clung to her exposed skin as she ventured further into the building. The musty odor of mildew or mold became more potent as she progressed. Kate refrained from calling out to Sam, unsure if he and the detective had arrived, and she didn't want to alert anyone or anything else that might be spending the night there.

She froze as she heard the shuffling of feet as she rounded a doorway that led to some stairs, Before Kate even had time to blink, she found herself pushed back harshly into the walls. Kate grunted as her arms were pinned upwards and she felt a forearm press over her collarbone. She stared up meeting Sam's eyes. She could feel the weight of his body as he held her against the wall.

Kate was presently taken aback by her current position and needed a moment to process it. One moment, she was pressed up against Sam, and the next, he released her wrists and stepped back with an apologetic chuckle. "I'm sorry, I thought I heard something. I didn't realize you had been released from the department," he explained.

"It's fine." She told him in hushed hurried tones, "Sam, listen to me. We need to find Claire and call it in, then we need to get to Dean."

"What-?"

Before he or Kate could say anything more, there was a woman's voice floating up from the stairs. She was yelling for Sam. The fear was audible. Kate and Sam just reacted as they both raced down the stairs taking two at a time. Sam's long legs had made sure he'd gotten to her first.

"Hey, hey, I'm here. What happened?" He asked breathlessly as he held up the flashlight in his hand.

"Claire," Kate heard Diana answer as she rounded the corner behind Sam.

"Did she attack you?" Sam questioned.

"No, no. She was just like… reaching out to me." "Diana stated, clearly shaken up. "She was over there by the window." Diana appeared to not have even seen Kate as she steadily walked over towards the window and questioned Sam to move the shelf blacking the way. Kate ignored the pair and turned around looking over the brick wall in front of her. She knew from the show that Claire was stuffed behind this wall. She just needed something to get in there.

"She's over here, Sam," Kate called out as the duo behind her were marveling at the mystery word.

"What?" She heard Diana question, but Kate didn't spare her any attention as she grabbed a hunk of metal piping off one of the many shelves, and began slamming it into the bricks. She groaned as she tried again to no avail.

"How did she get here?" Kate vaguely heard Diana ask, but Sam ignored her question as he moved to help Kate open up the wall.

"Here, let me try." Kate passed off the metal instrument to Sam, as she took his flashlight. He managed to get past the bricks within the first few swings, but then he dropped the pipe entirely as the hole widened. He looked inside the wall and became a bit more frantic about getting back there.

"Yep. There's definitely something back here." Diana had come up from behind the both of them as she held up her own flashlight.

"Remember, Sam. Claire isn't the one killing these people." Kate muttered to him as he worked at the wall. "We need to hurry though. Dean's going to need help."

"Dean?" He questioned with a grunt as he began using his elbow to widen the hole in the wall. It got to the point where the brick was just cracking and crumbling away.

"Here, give me a hand." He muttered as he reached into the hole and pulled out a wrapped-up bundle. Kate moved forwards really wishing she'd had long sleeves at least, however, she did what she had to as she and Sam laid the body gently on the floor. Diana crouched down behind Kate as she looked over Claire's body.

Kate could read that Diana obviously felt sympathy for the deceased. She held out both her hands suddenly, palms up displaying the bruises on her wrists.

"Her wrists," Sam stated as he moved to the cuff wrapped around Claires. They seemed to match up with the bruising on Diana's. "Yeah, they'd be bruised, just like yours," Sam muttered as he gently set the boney arms down in place again. Diana however, seemed to notice something else. Kate had already known what was coming. She just knew that if anyone else had stood and accused her partner that she'd have denied it out of loyalty.

Diana's fingers gently pulled out the necklace that Claire wore. "That necklace means something to you?" Sam questioned. Kate could hear the seriousness in his voice.

"I've seen it before. It's rare. It's custom-made over on Carson Street." Diana answered as she gently put back the necklace. "I have one just like it." She finished as she pulled out her own matching necklace from under her button-up.

Kate glanced over her shoulder at Diana. "Claire isn't harming anyone. She's trying to warn them." Kate said to her. Diana's expression only appeared to get more confused. "She's what we'd call a death omen," Kate told her.

"Yeah, sometimes, spirits don't want vengeance, they want justice. Which is why Claire led us to this building in the first place." Sam explained further as he stood and walked a few paces away. An uncomfortable expression overcame Sam's features as he asked, "Detective, how much do you know about your partner?"

The sudden sound of a gunshot startled all three of them, causing them to quickly turn their heads toward the stairs. Sam narrowly avoided being hit as he quickly dropped to the floor and crawled back to the safety of the small space where they were hiding. Fortunately, a brick wall jutted out around the corner, forming a doorway that connected their space to the rest of the basement level in the supplies store.

"What the hell is that?" Diana questioned.

Sam and Kate glanced at each other. She could tell he was questioning her if she knew or not, but she had no answers.

"Were you followed?" He asked.

Kate shook her head. "No, I checked before entering the building. There was no one around me."

"You sure?" Diana questioned as she drew her weapon. "'Cause someone is shooting at us right now, so obviously someone else is here."

"Yeah, someone not friendly," Sam stated as another bullet whizzed through the opening and passed the three of them again.

"You should've just left things the way they were!" Kate recognized the yell as Giles's voice. "Claire got in over her head here, and so have all of you."

"Tony?!" Diana called out in shock. It was obvious that he hadn't even registered as suspicious on her radar, but Kate had thought about it briefly after her interaction with Pete in his squad car.

"Diana, you should've just followed Pete's lead on this one. I don't want to have to kill you too." Kate glanced up at Sam, fear now seeping its way into her expression.

Diana pointed her gun in Tony's direction as she poked her head around the corner to get a look at where he was. A shot followed as she pulled herself back to safety. "He's at the stairs. Got a good vantage point of the whole basement. We're essentially pinned here." She muttered, her breathing quickening. Her police training was coming out as her adrenaline kicked in.

Kate reached out and grabbed Sam's forearm, he looked surprised by her touch, but she pulled him towards her as she snagged the pistol from her waist that she'd taken out of the trunk of the car. "You got the Impala?" Sam questioned in surprise.

"Yeah, she's parked in the alley back up the street. That's where I came from." As she pressed the gun into his hand.

She saw Sam's face change as a grin broke out over his features. It was obvious an idea was taking root in his head. "We came in through the back door, down here," Sam explained quickly.

"Yeah, but we'd still have to get past Giles with a gun." Diana pointed out.

"Right, but with both guns, we should be able to cover ourselves well enough to make it out of here," Sam replied as he held up the gun Kate had just passed to him. "Use the shelving, and hide your body as much as you can." Sam seemed to be directing his last statement at Kate in particular.

Diana didn't look convinced, but she also knew there weren't much for other options. They didn't know how long they could wait it out. Kate assumed Diana's radio was in her car which was undoubtedly parked around back where she could call for backup, and without knowing how much ammo Giles had they couldn't just wait him out. The trio only had the two guns with them, Kate figured they would run out of bullets and then just become sitting ducks here.

"We just need a distraction…" Diana trailed off as they all readied to run for it.

"I know you killed Claire!" Kate hollered out. The group quickly raced around the corner. Kate had Diana ahead of her leading the way, and Sam behind her covering from the rear.

"Congratulations, you want a medal?" Kate couldn't keep from shouting as more bullets whizzed by her body. "She met with me to sell some heroin for one of my more prestigious clients, and as soon as I arrived she tried to arrest me. Obviously, that wouldn't sit well with my career as a lawyer… I didn't even know about her relationship with Pete; not then… Let alone her being undercover." Tony trailed off. "And, I couldn't have any of that getting out."

"Keep him talking," Sam muttered as they hid behind one of the dingy sofas that were littered about the place. Kate nodded as she swallowed hard.

"Does Pete know you killed her?" Kate asked. "I'm sure he's a bit sore about it given that he loved her." Tony laughed at her last statement. His voice sounded throughout the basement loudly, it was echoing off the walls of the empty building.

"Eh, Peter seemed to have a change of heart after she died. He was working undercover with her, but once Claire died? I was able to show him a whole new world." Tony stated, proudly.

"You gave him the heroin?" Kate said shocked, she could feel her face going slack. She knew from earlier conversations that Tony had always stated that Pete was doing drugs, he seemed sure of it.

"Once he became addicted his whole outlook on the murder changed. Well, that and the money I was sending his way helped." Tony replied. So, Pete wasn't sending money for Tony to wash, it was the other way around. Kate thought to herself as she looked at Diana and found the same shocked expression that she wore. Apparently, she hadn't known her partner as well as she thought. "I thought about coming clean about the whole thing when you all showed up with the warning that he was set out to murder me next but, Pete made it pretty clear that there'd be consequences when he threatened me and killed Karen."

"We need to keep moving, the door's right there," Sam muttered as he nodded across the small room they were pinned in.

A sudden nearby thud made the trio jump, Sam and Kate both looked towards the back door to the building to find Dean on the ground there, and Pete standing over him. Dean still had cuffs that linked to shackles on his ankles. Kate could see his face appeared beaten up. Sam's gun was pointed at Pete from across the room in an instant as Diana turned and trained hers on Giles.

"This did not happen in the show," Kate muttered low enough for only Sam to hear. She was trying to let him know they were in uncharted territory for her.

"Diana." Pete greeted. Kate guessed that he had obviously moved on from Claire at the look he shared with his current partner.

"What're you doing, Pete?" She questioned her eyes glancing over at Pete from Tony, her tone indicated she was disappointed and saddened.

"I didn't do anything." He said quickly.

"It's a little late for that," Diana responded. Sam took a slow step in Pete's direction.

"Ah, ah, ah, I wouldn't do that if I were you." Pete threatened as he cocked back the hammer and aimed his gun down at Dean. "Not unless you want your brother's brains all over the floor."

"He's possessed, Sam." Kate heard him croak out from the floor. Her father had been right about that at least. Kate thought to herself. The demon was probably looking for information on Kate which was why he jumped into Pete, to begin with. Lucky for her, she was already gone by then. The trio watched as Dean made an attempt to get to his knees, but Pete bashed him in the back of the head with the grip of his gun. It sent Dean back to the floor again.

"Ahh," He groaned in pain, "C'mon, man. Enough of the headshots."

"Shut up," Pete responded. His focus was back on the three people before him. "Drop your guns. Now!" Sam spared a glance over at Kate. He grimaced as he lowered his gun gently to the floor. She knew that the brothers didn't push the limits when one another was threatened. Diana did the same with hers. Kate could hear the hurried footsteps of Giles coming to meet them at the bottom of the stairs.

Kate still felt the coolness of the Angel blade her father had given her before his sudden departure, she knew from the show that it killed Angels and Demons alike. She'd just need one good shot.

Pete's eyes scanned over the trio, pausing on Kate. She watched a corner of his lips turn up, "I'm not sure how you did it, Katie. Not only did you wiggle your way out of our grasp, but you left a dead angel in your wake." Kate remained silent not wanting to give the demon the satisfaction of a response. "Now, I got proof of a murder charge to add to your ever-growing rap sheet tonight and can hold you in lock-up. Unless, of course, you had help." Kate's mind briefly thought back to her father. She wondered if the demon had sensed him tonight, as her dad knew a demon was there. She couldn't say that she wasn't entirely worried about him, he seemed to have a giant target on his back among other angels, let alone demons.

Kate took a defensive step forwards, but Pete cut her off. "Ah, ah, ah. Wouldn't want to have him ending the night with a couple more holes, would we?" Kate stilled at his words. Sam seemed to be looking over his brother, still on the floor with renewed concern. "Unfortunately I got orders to not just dispatch tweedle dee and dumb here, but I've got orders to bring you back into custody with me and keep you there. Dear ol' Yellow Eyes is on his way, so no slip-ups this time." Kate guessed the demon's lacking use of his powers was because he planned on staying within Pete long enough to use his position as a cop to keep Kate locked down long enough for Azazel to arrive. Hard to maintain your cover if you blow it in front of coworkers.

Kate wasn't paying attention any longer to Pete's words as she was inching closer. Kate was almost close enough to make a move but while she was readying to take a gamble on just how bad the demons wanted her alive all of their attentions were pulled away, "Pete?" Kate dimly recognized Giles's voice from above. They watched as Pete's shining black eyes instantly disappeared and were replaced with his own. Kate could hear Giles's slow, cautious steps coming down the stairs.

Kate was quick to use the distraction. As she leaped over the distance she yanked the Angel blade in an upwards motion from the waist of her jeans. She pulled her arm down and drove the blade up into the lower part of Pete's midsection, she'd nearly tripped over Dean in his process of rolling out of the way. Pete's face contorted displaying the distress he felt before Kate watched his eyes begin to burn with an orange-like glow, the same glow was emitted from his open and twisted mouth. It was clear to Kate that the Angel blade was causing the demon within Pete immense pain. Kate stared into Pete's eyes until she saw them go dark. Her mind instantly went back to the night before when the hotel clerk was smote by Uriel. She gasped, jumping in surprise when she felt a hand reach out to her shoulderSam stood behind her with a shocked expression. Dean, however, gave voice to the look. "What the hell was that?" He questioned from behind Sam. He was still cuffed and unable to move much but somehow had managed to stand up.

"I-." Kate began unsure what to say. While, yes, she knew she'd saved them. She still carried the guilt of knowing she killed someone; a person, and it was beginning to hit her now.

Kate fought back the tears as she felt a lump forming in her throat. She'd held her own with the cases that she'd taken on. After exorcizing demons, Banishing poltergeists, and Beheading vampires? She'd think that this wouldn't bug her, but it did. She didn't just fight off the demon. She'd actually killed somebody. Her hands were starting to shake as she stood over Pete's body, just staring now. Out of all of them, it was Diana that had moved in first.

She moved to stand in front of Kate and looked over Pete's body. "He's dead," Diana said in a soft voice. Kate couldn't tell if it was relief or sadness in her tone. Diana took in Kate's appearance and moved to get in between her and the body. "You did what you had to," Was all she said as she reassuringly grabbed Kate's trembling hands. She turned away now, releasing Kate's hands as quickly as she had taken them. She crouched over Pete grabbing the keys out of his pocket after a brief search. Walking over to Dean she made quick work of freeing him from the cuffs.

"Now, the death omen Claire, what happens to her now?" Kate was grateful that Diana had moved on so quickly, business as usual. She didn't want to draw any more attention to her current state than she already had.

"It should be over," Sam answered, "She should be at rest." He finished.

"At least she got her revenge," Diana muttered. Kate recalled how Claire distracted Pete enough for Diana to grab her gun and get a shot off. She figured that's what had happened, but with Giles, as he had been the one to kill her.

Kate turned around as Dean questioned what to do next. Her eyes took in Giles's form laying against the bottom of the stairs. She noted that he was knocked out, but his chest was still rising in falling in a rhythmic way of breathing. His leg appeared to be soaking up blood from a bullet wound, seems he was knocked out when he fell down the stairs after getting shot.

"Well, Giles did confess to the murder of Claire and drug dealing, and Pete being under possession screwed up both your cases royally. I'd say there's a good chance that we get your cases dismissed."

"You can take care of that for us?" Sam asked relief flooding his voice.

"I hope so." Diana responded, "But, the St. Louis murder charges? That's another story. I- I can't help those." Dean cringed at her words, "Unless…" She trailed off as Kate moved to stand by the boys. "I just happen to turn my back and you walked away. I can tell them the suspects escaped."

Sam was quick to ask, "Wait, are you sure-?"

"Yeah, she's sure, Sam." Dean butted in.

"No, it's just-. You could lose your job over something like that." Sam explained, genuinely concerned.

"Look, I just want you guys out there, doing what you do best. Trust me. I'll sleep better at night." She started to turn away and move towards Giles but, paused. "Listen, you need to watch your back. They're gonna be looking for both of you right now." She made a quick wave of her hands as she muttered, "Now, get out of here. I gotta radio this in."

Kate watched her grab at her waist to pop the cuffs from the pouch on her belt, she walked over to Giles and began to handcuff him. The boys began to head out the back door but, Kate hadn't moved, "We need the blade." Kate said softly to both Sam and Dean. "I'm not leaving it here."

"Hell no. That thing just killed a demon. We need it." Dean said as he moved over towards Pete's body and slid the knife out of him slowly. Kate watched as Dean wiped the blood off the blade on his jean-covered thigh. Kate held her hand out for it. It's not that she didn't trust them with it, she just didn't want to lose the only thing her father gave her.

He started to hand it back over but jerked it back while stating "We're gonna discuss this in the car." Kate just nodded as he handed it over to her. "Speaking of…" He trailed off loudly as he looked toward Diana. She'd just finished rolling an unconscious Giles onto his stomach. "You wouldn't happen to know where my car is, by chance?"

Diana opened her mouth to answer, but Kate cut her off. "I got it from the impound lot. It's down the street parked out of sight."

Dean opened his mouth and then shut it again before he asked, "You drove my car?" Kate could hear the tightness in his voice. She knew he'd have more to say once they were safely putting some distance between them and this place, but for now, he left it at that. "There better not be any scratches on her, I swear to god…"

With that, the trio made their way out into the faded early morning light, heading back out on the move to the next case leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Authors note: I had to fix chapter 12 as it seemed to have been replaced by something totally unrelated to this story. I'm not sure how it happened, but it did. I now have to rewrite it in its entirety because the hard copy of it that I had in my files was also deleted. The intense annoyance I feel about this is hard to put into words, but for those of you that already read it. Please know that I am rewriting it. I am trying to keep it as close to the original as it was, but there will undoubtedly be tweaks to it because I cannot remember every little detail I put into it. Anyway, once I realized it had been changed. I had to delete it, so the last update was basically me putting in an author's note in its place. and then fixing the story to include the last chapters I'd written since then. I hope this clears up any confusion.

As always, thank you all for your continued support in reading as I am thoroughly enjoying writing this. the next chapter is in the works of being completed so please keep a lookout as it is coming hopefully within the week. As always your reviews are greatly appreciated.
