Homewrecker
Hell week wraps up after what seems like an eternity and Tyson finally goes out with his friends. Clubbing.
He pulls on a jean jacket over his usual hoodie and waits on Hilary as she dolls up in front of the mirror.
He gets déjà vu for some reason.
"Do I look…Wait, is this outfit too slutty?"
Tyson has his hands in the pockets of his jacket. "No" he says, stepping back. "You look great."
She's wearing a frilled purple skirt and a glittering sleeveless top. Hair down. Smoky eye makeup on. "I'm sorry, Tyson," she says all of a sudden.
"For what?"
"I was bitchy to you. Ever since the Kai thing. People call him a homewrecker sometimes. And you know what? I agree. He has that effect on people. Look what he did to us."
Tyson feels annoyance in his chest. "You can't talk about him like that."
"Oh yeah. He's your boyfriend. I forgot."
Tyson looks at the floor. At his shoes.
Hilary closes her eyes, talking to herself in her head.
"We'll have fun tonight. Let's put all that bullshit behind and just have a fun, carefree, drama-free night." She opens her eyes and turns to look at Tyson. "What do you think?"
He raises his head. "Yeah. I'd like that."
Tyson gets drunk. Really drunk. He's always been kind of a lightweight.
A group of guys and girls join them halfway through the night and the drinking games go on forever.
Tyson watches his friends get drawn aside by some of them and he misses Kai.
Wishes he was here with him right now.
The ice in his glass is melting.
Someone taps him on the shoulder. He turns around.
"Hey, we've met before." He's greeted by a guy with hair cropped close to his scalp and a slit in his eyebrow. He looks familiar. He's close to his height, a little taller. Bulky. The leather jacket sits well across his shoulders.
Tyson racks his brain. "I… can't seem to recall."
"Name's Megumi. We met on campus. At the asscrack of dawn. I gave you a ride back to the dorm."
"Oh yeah! I remember you! You never said which department you were in."
"Engineering"
"Oh. Smart."
He flashes a smile. All straight white teeth and dimples.
"You're in business?"
"Mhm" He takes a breath, shifts on the stool towards Megumi. "It's a lot of work and not enough excitement. What's engineering like?"
"Mechanical engineering is exciting. I don't know about the other sub departments though. Heard electronics is a real drag," he says, leaning forward a little.
Tyson lets out a laugh. "Where are you from?"
"Honshu. The Alps to be exact."
"Mountain guy."
"And island guy."
That gets another giggle out of him. "You grew up there?"
"My entire life. Moved to the city for college and uh… it was kind of shocking for me at first."
"But you blend right in now."
"Do I? Well, it's been four years."
"Oh you're older than me. I should be using honorifics with you! You didn't correct me."
"Do you use honorifics with friends?" he asks, lifting two defined eyebrows. "You're one of them goody-two shoes. A good boy."
Tyson turns away, snorting. Putting a hand over his face.
Megumi points at his glass. "Would you like a refill?"
Tyson hums. He misses Kai. Hes trying to fill in that hole with a guy who vaguely reminds him of Kai. "I think I'm good, " he declines politely. "Thank you."
Megumi waves a hand in front of his face. "Somber? What happened? Was it something I said?"
"No" Tyson shakes his head. "I miss my boyfriend."
"Oh you have a boyfriend." Disappointment thick in his words. "Damn"
Tyson grins. "You can buy me a drink." He doesn't think Megumi's any danger. He seems like a decent guy. They can have a friendly drink together.
The droplets of condensation on the glass slide down to pool on the bar counter. Tyson rubs at the sides of the glass. Trying to get rid of the condensation.
His body is buzzing.
Nerves tingling.
He wants Kai.
Wants him to touch him.
Megumi pours him another glass and Tyson contemplates drinking it, elbows on the counter. He thinks long and hard. Quite serious about it.
And that's all he remembers about that night. Can't recall anything else. It goes black afterward.
The ceiling is white. There's some specks of black here and there. A bad paint job?
His head pounds. He puts a hand over his eyes and groans. The light is intrusive.
"Close the curtains," he says to who he thinks is Kai. But there's no one there. The windows are unfamiliar.
The room is unfamiliar.
He sits up and the sheets fall from his torso to reveal his bare chest. He realizes he's naked underneath the rest of the blanket.
His heart slows down to a dull throb. Time halting around him. It feels like he's underwater as he turns around.
His face isn't unfamiliar but its not Kai. His shoulders are bare and he's pretty sure he's unclothed everywhere else too.
Tyson pulls in a shaky breath. The world around him blurring as his eyes fill up with tears.
He shuts his lids and wills it to go away. Hoping it's a particularly bad nightmare. Wills himself to wake up. But the scene doesn't change.
The room in front of him is real. The guy sleeping in his bed who is not his boyfriend is real.
Tyson pulls himself to his feet shakily. Collecting his clothes from the floor in a daze, the sheet wrapped around his waist.
He feels dirty.
He feels like a fraud. A liar.
A cheater.
He exits the apartment and walks through the street huddled tightly in his jacket. The cars are few on the road. The sun had just risen an hour ago. He's a couple blocks away from campus.
He walks all the way back to the dorm like a zombie. Numb. Unfeeling.
But once the door closes behind him and he's alone in his room he breaks down. Crumbling to the floor.
