Aliceinwhummperland's Whump words of the day: "Are you sure you don't want anything for the pain?"
Scott lay on the bed. Theoretically he was asleep, a state he was carefully maintaining as someone bustled around the infirmary. He didn't want company. Didn't want anyone to make a fuss.
He didn't deserve it.
'Scott?'
He was careful not to react. He'd had years of practice to perfect it. He could virtually hear Virgil's shoulders deflate as he realised Scott was asleep – or not going to wake up.
Scott felt even more guilty, but he couldn't give in now. If he did Virgil would want to help him, to do something to make him feel better.
He didn't deserve to feel better. Not when…
The door swished closed and Scott relaxed. It was a bad idea as every injury he'd received screamed at him all at once and he couldn't help but gasp.
'Are you sure you don't want anything for the pain?'
Scott cracked open an eye. Even that hurt. But it didn't stop him seeing Virgil standing over him, a smirk on his face. Scott knew there was nothing for it now.
'I'm fine.'
'Suuure you are.'
A warm hand briefly rested on his shoulder but Scott turned away.
'Scott, it wasn't your fault. You tried your best. Gave everything, almost dying in the process. Stop punishing yourself. Please.'
A traitorous tear fell and was gently wiped away.
Virgil took the win of Scott letting him comfort him to give him the morphine he knew Scott needed.
He watched over his brother as he relaxed into sleep.
There were going to be some serious conversations in the near future.
