A year had passed since Shinnok's defeat and the last time Raiden had seen Celestia and much had changed.

The God of Thunder had taken a break from his duties as Elder God and gone to see Liu Kang and Kung Lao, only for a terrible tragedy to have happened; Liu Kang was dead, murdered by the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung and necromancer Quan Chi.

Raiden and the other heroes of Earthrealm went to face the Deadly Alliance to avenge Liu Kang but it was a losing battle...until the original ruler of Outworld and Shao Kahn's predecessor, the Dragon King Onaga, arrived to wreak havoc on the realms. At that moment, Raiden harnessed all his power and sacrificed himself to stop Onaga.

However, Raiden survived but was changed, he became a much darker and more ruthless being yet despite his changes, his allies stayed by his side, hoping to help him return to the light and slowly, they managed to do so but unfortunately, Shao Kahn returned to reconquer the realms and a great battle took place.

In the realm of Edenia the heroes and villains confronted each other and engaged in a bloody war for the fate of all realms. In the end, both sides suffered significant losses until it was only Raiden and Shao Kahn left...

Raiden cried out as he tumbled across the ground, badly injured. Shao Kahn, however, remained as strong as ever as he approached the weakened Thunder God.

"Where are the Elder Gods Raiden?" The Conqueror asked with a cruel chuckle as he lifted Raiden off the dirt. "Their pathetic Mortal Kombat shackles me no longer!"

With that, Shao Kahn began beating Raiden unmercifully before throwing him over his shoulder. As Raiden flew through the air, his amulet fell off and shattered like glass on the ground. The God of Thunder struggled to get up, coughing blood as he weakly looked up at Shao Kahn.

"They masquerade as Dragons... but are mere toothless worms..." Shao Kahn raised his foot and stomped on Raiden's chest hard. "My venom spreads... it is the end of all things...ARMAGEDDON!"

As Shao Kahn said these words, his body glowed with the fiery power of the Fire Elemental, Blaze. Raiden could only stare in horror as the evil conqueror practically had the power to devour existence itself now.

"S-Stop!"

"It is done..." Shao Kahn said mockingly as he picked Raiden up again. "Your time has passed!"

The evil conqueror tossed Raiden hard, watching with cruel satisfaction as the God of Thunder landed on the ground, completely at his mercy.

"Ages wasted in foolish resistance. Now is the dawn of my rule."

As Raiden listened, he noticed the shattered remains of his amulet and began reaching for it before remembering something truly important and reaching to his belt instead, pulling out the Amulet of Faust.

"If anything were to happen to you or your comrades, this amulet will send their souls to Equestria, and be reborn to start a new life."

Remembering the words of his old friend, Raiden closed his eyes calmly and slowly began reciting an incantation. This did not go unnoticed by Shao Kahn, who thought that Raiden was making a desperate prayer to the Elder Gods as he chuckled and began approaching.

"Yes, pray to the worms Raiden as your world ends..."

The conqueror summoned his Wrath Hammer and raised it high above his head to crush Raiden's skull once and for all, only for the Thunder God to finish his incantation as he opened his eyes and stared Shao Kahn dead in the face.

Suddenly, lightning struck from the skies above as Shao Kahn looked up to see a massive portal open up above the pyramid. The evil emperor's smug bravado completely vanished as he stared at the portal in horror before looking at Raiden in rage.

"What have you done?!"

Raiden watched as the souls of his comrades and those of Shao Kahn's ascended into the portal, giving a defiant glare to the evil emperor.

"I made a promise to someone... that I would survive to see her again. And now I am sending the souls of all who perished here to a realm that not even you can reach!"

Realizing what was happening, Shao Kahn let out a furious roar at his victory being so close and yet taken away from him at the very last second. He made to attack Raiden but was blocked by an electric barrier.

The souls of all the heroes of Earthrealm disappeared through the portal. However, the souls of Shao Kahn's allies returned to their bodies, the villains slowly waking up as if they had simply fallen asleep.

Raiden watched as the last of his friends' souls disappeared through the portal before it completely closed and shut his eyes with contentment, noticing the sun peeking out from the dark clouds to show that there was light in the darkness. However, regret ate at his heart as he knew he may never see his dearest friend again.

"Celestia...forgive me..."

Celestia's eyes suddenly shot open as she arose quickly from her bed before rushing outside onto the balcony, looking up at the night sky. Several shooting stars began falling down into Equestria's borders, three of which landed in the Everfree Forest.

The Princess of the Sun knew what those shooting stars meant, she knew where they originally came from and closed her eyes with great sorrow.

"Tia, is everything alright?" Came Luna's worried voice as the Princess of the Night ran in, having been alerted from her nightly duties to check up on her older sister.

Celestia turned to her beloved sister, tears welling in her eyes as she fell to her knees and buried her face in her hands, letting out silent sobs as Luna quickly rushed over to embrace her. As soon as Celestia finished working the grief out of her system, she looked at her sister with a serious expression.

"Luna... send a scouting party to the Everfree Forest..."

"But why?"

Celestia turned to the forest knowing of what she saw. "We're going to have some visitors... and let Princess Twilight know of what's going on. We'll need all the help we need to welcome our new guests."

At the Castle of Friendship in Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, was looking at the night sky. She had seen the shooting stars herself, having been awoken from her sleep by them. The young Alicorn girl knew that this star shower was not normal, then again, ever since she came to Ponyville, nothing ever was normal.

"Twilight! We just got a letter!"

Turning to see her number one assistant/little brother/sorta-son Spike the Dragon running in, Twilight made her way over to see what was up as she noticed a scroll clenched tightly in his claws.

"Spike, what is it?"

"We got a letter! But it's not from Princess Celestia!" The young drake explained as he showed the scroll, Twilight realizing it did not have Celestia's usual seal...but Luna's.
"It's from Princess Luna!"

Now even more curious than normal, Twilight opened up the scroll and unfurled it, reading its contents with a critical eye. If Luna was the one sending her a message, it had to be important.

Dear Princess Twilight Sparkle

My sister has informed me that we have received visitors from another realm. You saw it yourself, yes? The mysterious star shower? We need you and your friends to aid the search for these lost individuals in the Everfree Forest and bring them to Canterlot as soon as you can.

Sincerely, Princess Luna

"What do you think she means?" Spike asked worriedly.

"I don't know, Spike," Twilight said, uncertain. "But whatever's going on...I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it."

Sorry if this chapter was short, but I want to set things at an easy pace for right now.

We'll be getting into the action next chapter though for those who have read the original Mortal Kombat: Defenders of Equestria on FimFiction probably already know who's showing up.
