Hinata, Sasuke, and Naruto stood side-by-side as Minato arrived with Kushina. Her long, red hair nearly reached her knees and Hinata was in awe at its length and beauty. She absently reached up to her short hair that reached just above her shoulders and wondered if she could grow her hair out as much.

"Kushina, this is Sasuke Uchiha, the youngest Uchiha of the main house, and Hinata Hyuuga, the eldest of the main house. Students, this is Kushina Uzumaki, the strongest woman I know and Naruto's mother," Minato introduced. "She specializes in her clan's trademark style, fuinjutsu, which is the use of seals, as well as in chakra control, and in medical ninjutsu."

"What is it that you specialize in?" Sasuke asked him.

"Speed, ninjutsu, and combat," he replied.

Hinata's eyes lit up at hearing their abilities and there was a huge smile on her face. "You're both so very strong!" She bowed. "Thank you for teaching us."

Minato and Kushina chuckled at her kind words and sparkling eyes. "You're very welcome, Hinata-chan," Kushina said. "First thing's first, I need to see you three fight."

"In different matches or like yesterday?" Naruto asked.

"Like yesterday," Minato replied. He and Kushina stood to the side as the three got into their positions. Hinata in her lax Gentle Fist style, Sasuke in the standard taijutsu stance, and Naruto in a boxing stance.

"Begin!"

The three charged each other. Hinata ducked down as Sasuke's fist went for her face and shot her palm toward his thigh but he leaped over Naruto and went for a punch to the blond boy. Naruto rolled to the side and managed to kick Hinata in the side, forcing her back a few feet. She quickly recovered and grabbed Naruto's arm, sending chakra through her fingertips to numb his arm as she pulled herself closer to him with a raised palm. Sasuke, coming from the side with a roundhouse kick, forced her to retreat and focus on landing a hit on him since she and Naruto had gotten each other.

Kushina and Minato watched closely, impressed by their fighting skills at such a young age. They knew Naruto could hold his own but watching their son fight two doujutsu users made them proud despite knowing they couldn't reveal their doujutsu skills until they were placed in a genin team. He was still holding his own.

Looking at Hinata, Kushina was in slight awe of her chakra control without the use of her byakugan. From Naruto holding his arm and trying to shake out the feeling, she saw that she had focused her chakra into her fingertips to attack the chakra points in his forearm. Kushina decided that she wanted to have Hinata try her hand at medical ninjutsu.

Focusing on Sasuke, they saw his speed and the strength behind his attacks. He was fast at eluding charges from his partners and quick at coming up with a counter-attack. Looking at him closer, Minato could see a darkness within him and the great potential in all of them. Ninjutsu was something Sasuke was going to be great at.

When Hinata landed a hit on Sasuke's side, all three jumped away from one another, panting but focused on their opponents with hard eyes. Naruto was still shaking out his arm while Hinata was feeling out her back and Sasuke was rubbing his side.

"Naruto, you're reckless when it comes to facing Hinata that you forget she can block your points with just about any part of her body," Sasuke said.

Naruto smirked. "I could say the same for you. You get too cocky and we manage to land hits on you," he replied.

"And me?" Hinata asked.

"You're better at attacking, but your speed is lacking," Sasuke said. "You're faster than before, but you should be even faster." Hinata nodded firmly, taking it in.

Kushina and Minato watched them give each other advice on where they needed to improve and felt moved by their ability to be honest and take constructive criticism.

"Okay," Minato said, clapping once to get their attention. "You three did great. Kushina, any advice?"

Kushina stepped forward and circled around them. "I think Sasuke is very strong and fast, but his arrogance could very well be his downfall. Naruto is too reckless with his attacks and it hinders his ability to fight well against his opponent for very long, and Hinata lacks speed. All in all, what you said was true. You know each other very well and that is imperative to being in a three-man squad." She came to a stop in front of them. "I think you three will be a very strong team, and we're going to help you get there, you know!"

Minato smiled. "That's right. And the first thing we'll get started on is one of the techniques needed to graduate from the academy: the Transformation technique. This allows you to take on the appearance of whatever you choose such as a person, plants, animals, and even inanimate objects," he explained.

He showed them the proper hand seals to use slowly—dog, boar, and ram—and then transformed into Kushina, causing their students to look in awe. Immediately, they were excited to try it and copied the hand seals a few times to get the hang of it.

"It'll take you a few tries to get it, but don't get discouraged. It only means you will have to work harder," Kushina explained.

They spent the rest of their training session failing to transform but getting closer and closer to doing it. They all got excited when one got closer to doing it.

Afterward, Sasuke walked Hinata home without Naruto this time as his parents wanted to take him out to eat. They invited all their students but Hinata informed them she had training with her father while Sasuke had a rare training day with his own father.

"What did Kushina-sensei want to talk to you about?" Sasuke asked.

"She…wanted to know if I was interested in medical ninjutsu," she said.

"Medical ninjutsu?"

Hinata nodded. "Yes. She said my chakra control was very good and that every squad should have a medic. I think she's right, and with my… well, I just think it's a good idea, so I agreed," Hinata said, cutting herself off when she was going to mention her doujutsu.

"A medic is very important," Sasuke replied. "Probably the most important person on the team. I think you should go for it, too. Your chakra control is amazing. If any of us can do it, it would be you."

Hinata blushed deeply and Sasuke found himself pleased that he could do that. "Th-thank you, Sasuke." He smiled in acknowledgment. "What about you? Are you happy to be training with your father?" Sasuke shrugged but Hinata could tell that he was excited.

The rest of the walk continued in comfortable silence.

When they stopped in front of the Hyuuga compound, Hinata turned to him with a smile. "If your training doesn't go on too late, would you like to come over for some evening tea?" She asked. He normally came once a week to visit outside of training, but she enjoyed her time with him and felt he would be lonely without Itachi there for the next week.

"I'm sure it won't be too late since he's busy," Sasuke said. She took that as his agreement and told him she would be expecting him around seven. He took off running toward his house with a wave of goodbye.

Sasuke's moods were becoming easier to read, just as Itachi's silences were. She hoped she could continue to be friends with both brothers for many years to come.

After Sasuke went home, Hinata sat in her room studying a book on herbs that she asked Ko to get for her. Kushina's talk with her about medical ninjutsu reminded her of the Hyuuga's special salve and how it was made. It caused her to think about different things that could be made to heal.

She made a list of herbs to start planting in the garden and made a note to talk to her father about finally building that greenhouse.

Her time spent training was when she felt absolutely happy, aside from spending time with Hanabi. Her sister was growing fast she almost couldn't keep up. With her brown hair, she was the spitting image of her father. Hinata took after her mother as she inherited her midnight-blue hair color and, according to her father, her gentle nature. It made Hinata extremely happy, even if her father's eyes flashed with sadness when looking at her every now and then.

She frowned a little thinking back to the news her father had given her earlier. The ninja who had tried to kidnap her was being put to death by their family next month and she didn't know how to feel about it. She felt like a terrible person for feeling nothing towards the man and his upcoming death. She wanted to be kind toward him and to mourn him but she couldn't bring herself to do it, and part of her felt as though the man deserved it. She hugged herself as she struggled with her emotions.

Knowing she wasn't going to be able to continue reading, Hinata put her book aside and laid back on her bed, nervous about what the future held but also excited.

The next morning, she walked to school with Neji and Sasuke who seemed to get along better and actually made conversation now. Part of her wanted to tease Sasuke about it but she refrained as it would be too mean, but the small glares he occasionally shot her way told her he knew what she wanted to say.

"Do you practice the jutsu any more before bed?" Sasuke asked her as they walked into their classroom.

Hinata nodded. "I tried a couple of times before I began reading this new book I got," she replied.

"What book could be more important than training?"

"It trains your mind," she answered, "and it will help me add another thing to my ninja arsenal."

This intrigued Sasuke and he leaned closer to her. "What is it?"

Hinata shook her head and moved back a little, conscious of the fact that all of Sasuke's fangirls were watching them like a hawk. "You'll find out another time."

"No fair," he huffed. "That means I'll have to learn something secret, too."

"I mean, we keep a lot of our moves secret since we come from dojutsu clans," she pointed out. "It's not so different from that."

He shrugged. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

They made easy conversations with their friends before class, with Shikamaru shooting an inquiring look toward Hinata to which she responded with a smile, informing him silently that she was okay. Sasuke narrowed his eyes, suspicious of when they got close enough to have silent conversations.

It bothered Sasuke the whole day, especially when he saw them sitting together under Hinata's favorite tree. He continued training with Naruto as Hinata had opted to meditate—her clan training had done a number on her and she wanted to be able to train with Naruto's parents at full capacity—despite his mind being elsewhere. Naruto was able to hit him much more than he normally could.

"Where's your head?" Naruto all but growled. "Be serious!"

Sasuke shook himself out and began sparring as he normally did, but a small part of him wondered why Hinata being closer to anyone else bothered him. Even when Itachi was at her house without him for tea, he could barely hold himself back from pacing until his brother returned.

Hinata sat quietly next to Shikamaru, both meditating in their own way, although she was positive he was just trying to nap.

"Have those girls given you any more trouble?" He asked randomly.

Without opening her eyes, she shrugged. "It's the…same amount as usual." She sighed. "I think I would prefer it if they just outwardly said what they wanted to my face. I think…it's frustrating when they're not being open and only physical."

Shikamaru hummed. "It definitely looks annoying. I don't get how you haven't retaliated. You're allowed to since you're the heiress to the Hyuuga Clan."

"That's the reason I don't want to. They're going to think that I am retaliating because I will not get in trouble for it."

"But now they think you're a pushover. Hinata, I'm getting tired of watching you trip over their feet and get pushed to the floor. It's troublesome," he snapped. Mostly he felt helpless since she asked him not to do or say anything.

"I'm sorry for troubling you, Shikamaru-san," she said curtly.

He sighed. "Don't go back to being formal with me because you're upset. I'm just…worried, I guess. It's hard watching a friend be treated like that due to jealousy. It's idiotic."

He finally opened his eyes and turned to look at her when he heard her shifting. He ended up making direct eye contact and it surprised him as she mostly looked forward or down when talking to others. She smiled warmly at him, and he tore his eyes away as it became too much.

"Thank you, Shikamaru," she said, her voice more tender than he'd ever heard it. "For caring about me."

He cleared his throat and fought the blush crawling onto his face. "Don't mention it."

She closed her eyes and went back to meditating, and he took the opportunity to just watch her. He concluded that he enjoyed it more than cloud-watching…just a little.

When school ended and she was walking to the training grounds with Sasuke and Naruto, and Ko trailing just a little behind them, she was troubled. Sasuke had barely looked at her or spoken more than a single word to her, and she wasn't sure what to make of it. Hinata thought back throughout the day trying to figure out if she'd offended him at some point, but nothing came to mind.

"I wonder if we could get that jutsu down today!" Naruto groaned. "How close did you guys get after training? I know I wasn't the only one who kept trying."

Sasuke shrugged. "I think I'm close to getting it."

Hinata nodded. "Me too." Last night, she was able to use her byakugan on herself after asking Ko to transform for her so she could see the way his chakra worked when he did it. Afterward, she applied it to herself and figured out what it was she needed to do. She hadn't gotten it yet, but she was sure she could get it today.

When they got to the training grounds, Minato and Kushina were waiting by the entrance with cheerful smiles on their faces.

Hinata lit up and ran towards them before bowing respectfully. "G-good afternoon," she greeted. The two chuckled at how cute she was. Kushina patted Hinata's head and Minato kept his kind smile.

"Good afternoon, Hinata-chan," they said in unison. Hinata blushed and ducked her head down. They really were very pretty people. Sasuke raised a brow at her behavior.

When Ko let them in, Minato and Kushina stood to the side as the three immediately began trying to perform the transformation jutsu.

Minato laughed softly. "Wait a minute, you three. We want you to spar first before we try working on that jutsu again," Minato explained.

"Yes," Kushina said, "First, we want Sasuke and Hinata to spar."

The two stood opposite of one another while Naruto stood beside his parents.

"Begin!"

Hinata opted to attack first, throwing a chakra-charged palm at his shoulder. Sasuke dodged swiftly and shoved his knee into her stomach harder than usual. She gasped for air as she jumped back and struggled to find her breath, and Sasuke took the chance to rush for her. Hinata was barely able to block his fists as she tried to get her breathing right; finally, she was able to jump over Sasuke when he shot down to kick at her legs and shoved the heel of her foot into the back of his head causing him to slam into the ground face first.

Properly angry now, he ran for her and grabbed her arms effectively surprising her. He brought his head forward to headbutt Hinata, but she saw what he was about to do and gripped his forearms with a tight grip and slid down between his legs before pulling and flipping him over on his back. With Sasuke being extremely harsh, she didn't have a choice but to fully shut off the chakra in his forearms, preventing him completely from using them. She rolled over onto her feet and waited for Sasuke's next move with hard and confused eyes.

"Did you paralyze my arms?!" He shouted.

"I don't know why you're angry, but you shouldn't take it out on me," she replied, but then she smiled. "Although I do appreciate you finally taking me seriously and fighting me with your full strength."

Sasuke paused for a moment, realizing that she was right. He never held back with Naruto but seemed to do so with Hinata. He huffed out a laugh, smirking at her.

"So you were capable of paralyzing us this whole time?" He asked. "Then I'm not the only one holding back."

Hinata's eyes widened and she shook her head. "If I did that, then one hit from me could immobilize you. I will not do that to my comrades," she argued.

"How else are we going to learn to fight another Hyuuga, should we need to?"

Hinata shook her head again. "I refuse."

Sasuke growled and shot forward using his legs and elbows to try and land a hit on her. She blocked his kicks with her palms, numbing his legs and causing him to back away again.

"Enough!" Kushina called out. "Sasuke, your anger is making you reckless, you know. You're making mistakes I would consider stupid, and you're not stupid so quit acting like it!" Sasuke shrunk down at the look in her eyes.

"Hinata, I admire your desire not to hurt your teammates, but holding back is guaranteed to hurt them, understand?" Hinata nodded. "Okay. Unblock Sasuke's chakra points and then let me heal your stomach before you spar against Naruto."

"Why is she sparring him?" Sasuke complained.

"Because she won," she replied, shutting him up with an added smirk. Her face grew serious, then. "You need to learn to control that anger or it's going to get you killed in a real battle against a real enemy. If you show up to training like this again, you're running laps the entire time. Anger can help you with a boost of extra strength, but that doesn't mean anything if you can't control it."

Minato smiled nervously at Kushina's rising anger. "Okay, let's get them ready to go for the next spar." The last thing he wanted was for her to blow up and scold Sasuke into the ground.

Hinata unblocked his chakra points without saying a word and went to Kushina who lifted up her shirt just enough to see a large bruise along her torso. Sasuke, having seen it, looked away with shame. He'd been angry since he saw her interaction with Shikamaru this morning coupled with their lunch hour spent side by side. It annoyed him and he didn't know why.

He sat to the side to watch his friends spar.

"Hinata, don't hold back," Naruto said, his eyes serious.

Hinata took a shaky breath and hesitantly nodded. She knew Kushina was right. Holding back is going to hurt and offend them, and that was the last thing she wanted to do to her best friends.

"Okay," she said.

They got into their stances and immediately rushed for each other once Minato called for them to begin.

Naruto swung a right hook at her that she blocked with her forearm as she threw her palm towards this sternum. He ducked to the side and brought his knee up to kick her but she used it to flip over him and attack from his rear. Naruto dropped to his hands to double kick back at her, catching her in the knees.

Hinata fell to her knee, waiting for Naruto's next move which came when he turned to her ready to punch. She caught his fist, wincing at his strength before blocking the chakra in his hands.

Naruto grunted at the pain and tried to jump back but Hinata's grip was solid, reminding him of when he first asked to train with her. Hinata pulled her other palm back and struck him in the sternum.

He went down for a moment but shocked Hinata when he got back up. He wasn't supposed to be able to move, or even be conscious. She was afraid she'd missed and desperately wished to activate her byakugan to check.

Her distraction caused Naruto to land a punch to her jaw, throwing her back by the sheer force of it. She cried out as she rolled to a stop.

"Hinata!" Naruto called out worriedly. He'd been expecting her to block it as she always does. He ran over to her. "Are you okay?!"

She was in immense pain, and angry at herself for being distracted, but she pushed herself up to her knees and focused an incredible amount of chakra into her palm, more than she'd ever done, before forcing it toward Naruto. She surprised both of them when he blew back around ten feet. She looked at her hand in shock; she hadn't even touched him as he was still running toward her. Hinata was only going to angrily release chakra from her hands to relieve that feeling.

Minato and Kushina looked on in surprise as the move she'd just done was an advanced Hyuuga technique that Hiashi couldn't have even been teaching her yet. Judging by the look on her face and Ko's, she hadn't been shown that move, yet she'd just done it.

"Enough!" Kushina called out. Naruto was struggling to stand and Hinata was bleeding from her mouth and holding her jaw, but her worry for her friend was much greater. She was on her feet first and rushed towards him as she held her jaw.

She let out a whimper as she put her hand on his back. "N-Naruto… I am so sorry," she said, tears springing to her eyes.

"Hinata, that move was so awesome!" Naruto replied, his eyes filled with awe and coupled with pain. "It…definitely hurt though." He chuckled sheepishly as he struggled to his feet. She put her arm around him and put his arm around her shoulder to support him.

When Minato and Kushina were close enough, she bowed deeply. "I apologize, Minato-sensei, Kushina-sensei."

Minato simply patted her head and Kushina took Naruto with a warm smile. "That was an amazing move, Hinata-chan," Minato said. "Where did you learn to do that?"

Hinata shook her head. "I-I didn't," she said honestly. "It…it just happened, and it…" scared me, she finished in her head. She looked down at her hands again and back towards Naruto who was getting healed by his mother. The tears in her eyes were clear but she used all of her might to prevent them from falling.

Minato got on his knee in front of her to get to eye level. "Hinata-chan, you just unknowingly used an advanced Hyuuga technique. It was really impressive, especially for someone your age." He pulled her into a tight hug. "Naruto is fine. It takes a lot more to hurt him seriously."

Over his shoulder, Hinata saw Naruto laughing with his mom as she healed him. When they made eye contact, she felt the guilt well up all over again. Naruto smiled brightly at her and her heart eased just a little bit. Hinata buried her face in Minato's shoulder until the tears disappeared.

"Thank you, sensei," she mumbled as she stepped away. Minato stroked her hair comfortingly and smiled gently.

"Are you okay?" Sasuke said from beside her suddenly.

Hinata nodded but kept her eyes on the ground.

"Naruto's fine. He's a strong person," he assured her. "He's already mentioned that he wants to see you do it again."

Hinata shook her head vehemently. "N-no!" She refused. "Even if I could, I will not do so against a comrade." It was bad enough that she couldn't even see what that move had done to Naruto's chakra network. She could've killed one of her best friends.

"Hinata-chan's right. For now, at least. It's a main house technique so you will not have to worry about any other Hyuuga using it against you," Minato explained. "Let's leave it for now." Sasuke nodded and lingered around Hinata should she need any more support.

"Naruto's fine! That's all for sparring today; let's continue with the transformation technique," Kushina said as she and Naruto joined them. Kushina healed Hinata's jaw, sensing her discomfort as the young girl held it. Naruto's punch had been very merciless.

Their students worked in silence and Kushina and Minato shared a worried glance when they saw Hinata a bit further away from the boys and keeping her eyes on the ground. They worried for her mental well-being and if being a ninja was truly right for her if this was how she reacted in a spar. She was…gentle.

Sasuke was the first to perform the transformation technique, a second before Hinata. They chose to transform into each other. A smirk on Hinata and a blush on Sasuke didn't seem right to their blonde-headed friend and he said as much. Seeing that he was the only one left who hadn't done it, Naruto pushed himself more, putting more chakra into his center as his parents had shown them, and ended up transforming into Hinata.

"Yes! I got it!" He cheered, Hinata's voice ringing loud in the training grounds. Hinata-Sasuke blushed even more while Sasuke-Hinata frowned and hit Naruto-Hinata on the head.

"Don't be an idiot using her body," he scolded. "But good job." The smirk still looked weird on Sasuke-Hinata's face but Naruto-Hinata couldn't help but blush.

"Y-you did great, Naruto," Hinata-Sasuke said. It felt jarring hearing Sasuke's voice so soft and hesitant but he smiled widely.

"Thanks, Hinata!"

Kushina clapped to get their attention and they immediately fell into line. "You three did great. You managed to change into one another. Next, we'll work on you transforming into Minato or me, and then plants and different objects," she explained. The three nodded and released their jutsus.

They spend the rest of their training working on different transformations.

Ko was walking just a bit behind Hinata and Sasuke. He was deep in thought at having witnessed her use the Vacuum Palm, especially at such a young age. He needed to speak with Hiashi about it.

"Sasuke," Hinata said quietly.

"Hm?"

"Why…were you angry with me earlier?" She asked. "I've thought about everything, trying to find when I offended you but I couldn't. Please tell me so I may reflect and apologize."

Sasuke stared at her for a moment as they walked before sighing deeply. "You didn't do or say anything rude." Hinata wasn't sure if she believed that but remained quiet. "Hey, how… close are you to Shikamaru?" He decided it was best to just get it over with.

Hinata tilted her head, confused by the sudden change of subject. "I like to think that he and I are good friends, just as I am with everyone else," she replied. "But you and Naruto are my best friends." She'd never told Sasuke about how much his friendship meant to her and realizing this made her blush.

Sasuke had to turn his face away at hearing that as he felt his face heat up. "Oh…I see." He bit back a smile. "Then, I guess that's okay." He suddenly didn't care that maybe she could have silent conversations with the Nara boy because he was her best friend.

"You…and Naruto," he rushed, adding Naruto to seem less anxious, "are also my best friends."

Hinata smiled happily at him and said nothing as they made it to the Hyuuga compound. "Would you like to have tea together after my training?" She asked.

Sasuke nodded. "I'll be by at around seven," he replied before running off with a wave.

Ko led her inside and to her room and waited while she changed into her training uniform before leading her to her father's dojo. When she entered, Hiashi was blocking a multitude of attacks from her cousin. She and Ko sat on the side, patiently waiting until they came to a break.

"Hinata, how was training?" Hiashi asked a few minutes later.

She bowed her head to her father before answering. "It went…well," she said. "I've learned the transformation jutsu."

"That's a very useful jutsu. You've done well."

"Hiashi-sama," Ko said. Hinata closed her eyes tightly as she knew what he was going to say. "During Hinata-sama's spar against Naruto Uzumaki, she performed the Vacuum Palm."

So that's the name of it.

Hiashi's eyes widened slightly before he turned them back to his daughter. "Is this true?"

Hinata could barely look up at him. "I don't know how I did it, father. I just know that I was angry at myself for letting him land a hit on me, and I focused a lot of my chakra into my hand before doing it."

"The Vacuum Palm is an advanced main house technique and you're saying you did it by accident?"

Hinata nodded. "Yes. I-I know it was reckless of me to charge that much chakra into my palm without seeing how it would affect Naruto-san's chakra network. I promise I will not use it anymore," she said. Ko smiled sadly at his charge as he'd seen how regretful and disgusted with herself she was back at the training grounds, even though Naruto was quickly healed by his mother.

"While I admit that it should be done with your byakugan, especially if you're training, I do not fault you. What you managed to do was very impressive and I do not want you to hold yourself back with something such as guilt. Naruto Uzumaki is fine, yes?" Hinata nodded. "Then there is no use dwelling on what could have happened, my daughter. You did well."

Hinata knew he was right but she couldn't get the memory of Naruto being thrown back so violently with her chakra. If she just dismissed it, then she felt she was no better than the Kumo nin that tried to kidnap her.

"Hinata," her father snapped. Hinata looked up at him. "If it were done at full force, they would not be conscious. You said he was fine. That is what matters. Not what could have happened, despite what you may think. If you continue to dwell on what-ifs, then I'm afraid you are not fit to be my heir. Is that what you think?"

She shook her head again.

"I do not think so either. You are to be the next leader so you must act like it. Take pride in being able to unlock a powerful technique you did not even know existed."

Hinata took a slow breath and nodded once again. Her father was right. If she was to lead the clan into a new era of change and peace, then she could not act like a mere child. She needed to let everyone know that she could be a good leader, the right leader for them. Naruto was okay and she got access to a new offensive technique.

She looked up straight into her father's eyes and nodded a last time. "Yes, father," she said confidently.

At that, Hiashi nodded to himself. "It's time to begin our training. Today, you are going to be going against me alongside Neji."

She took her place beside her cousin and shared a smile with him before they got into their stances.
