4th Day of the 1st Moon
?
"I must say, this warp gate stuff is rather convenient."
I allowed myself to smile a little as I looked out at the expanse of barren dirt before me. Truthfully, it didn't look all that different to what was behind me. After all, pristine snow was just as white as the dirt of this place, before the land is claimed.
"Indeed" came the voice of Saber directly behind me. "If this war does end up being of a global scale, then matters of logistics are greatly simplified by their existence."
"Shame it doesn't look like they work as replacements for naval passage."
"In many ways that would render ships obsolete."
"And I suppose some of the servants, especially Rider class ones, could be specialized in naval warfare…" I sighed. "Whoever this Satanael really is, it is undeniable that they thoroughly prepared for this war. Honestly, I find it slightly vexing."
"Something troubling you, master?"
"Well, for starters, I don't like the fact that someone widely believed to not be a magus was capable of creating something like this, considering the state we magi are currently in. Then there's the matter of all these systems! Honestly, everything is so convoluted, even with those endless messages popping up every time you so much as think about something or other! Technology on Earth was convoluted enough, but this is a whole other level of infuriating to deal with!"
"Even if the end result of coming to understand it all leads to convenience?"
"Especially then!"
Saber simply remained silent, and with nothing else to do but wait my mind ended up wandering to the myriad thoughts about this place I'd now found myself in for the past few days, if this world even followed a day and night cycle similar to Earth. Naturally, it didn't help to improve my mood.
"He's late…" I huffed to no one in particular, simply trying to vent a bit of my mounting frustration.
"You still have yet to tell me who it is you're expecting" Saber noted.
"My brother" I sighed. "We'd managed to establish communication with each other earlier, and according to him he wasn't too far way, all things considered, so it was best for me to hold down the fort here and wait for him. Should have known that this would be the result, really; was never good at judging distances…"
"Ah, so that's what you were doing that night."
"Yes, well, that particular feat of magecraft only works in clear skies at night, and it's not like we've had more than one of those back in Bergen. But the fact it worked in the first place is… well, it was certainly unexpected."
"Oh? Why is that?"
"Because it was purely theoretical in nature."
Before Saber could say anything in response, assuming he was planning on saying something, the ground beneath my feet shook ever so slightly. Looking back out across the expanse of dirt before me, there wasn't an immediate change in what I saw. After a moment though, the ground began to glitter, ever so slightly. Light reflecting off snow, not dirt…
"Well, either that is your brother, or we have an enemy at our door" Saber commented, manifesting his blade.
"I would be surprised if it was anyone but him, but better safe than sorry" I nodded, taking a few steps back from what moments before had been a clear border between the two territories.
It was only about a minute later that a purple portal formed only a few hundred feet away from Saber and I.
"Yo, sis" by brother called out the moment he'd come through the portal, all smiles and giggles. "These portal things sick or what?! Whoever came up with these and got them working is a genius, I say!"
"Glad to see you're enjoying yourself" I shouted back. "Aren't you missing someone though?!"
"Nah, Lancer will be here in a moment. Or at least, I think they should. I did give them the proper permissions, I think?"
"You think" I began to laugh as behind him the portal closed and faded away. "From where I'm standing, it looks like you botched it, brother dearest. Can't say I'm envious of your walk of shame back either."
"Oh? Huh… I thought I'd set it correctly…" he muttered, turning to look behind him then back to me. "I know I'm not the greatest with all this techy shit, but-"
Honestly, the timing of the portal opening behind him as he spoke felt a little too convenient in timing. If I didn't know any better, I'd have sworn he'd planned for it to go this way. But considering this was my brother we were talking about here, it really was most likely a coincidence.
"Well, look at that. I am learning how these things work" he flashed me a smug grin. "Speaking of figuring out how things work, we still going with the plan of an empire under my control?"
"I mean, considering you've been the one doing all the expanding on the way here, think that makes the most sense. You have any objections to that, Saber?"
"…None at the moment. Though depending on future circumstances, it may become vital to take control of some territory of our own" Saber nodded, before turning to face my brother. "Also, shouldn't your servant have come through the portal by now?"
"…Give it a moment…" my brother hesitated and looked as though he was going to start waking back towards the portal before a second figure finally emerged from it.
"Sorry for the delay, master" the servant began to speak before she'd even looked up from the ground. "I'm afraid I'm still not quite used to-"
A wave of silence washed over the surroundings as my brother's servant fell silent, her face rapidly turning red. Beside me, Saber was quite as obvious, but I could easily sense both the shock and the joy that Saber was feeling.
"S-S-S-Sigurd?!"
…Yup, now that the two of us were together, we could really get this war started.
A/N
Last bit of introductions for a bit, I promise! Next post will be back to someone already introduced, and be much longer than the past few posts have been.
Also, due to school being back in session, my upload schedule will be looking a bit different. Should actually be for the better though, and hopefully that'll be seen soon!
As for some questions I'd gotten in reviews since the last post...
1) No, Sophia is not Tristan's sister. Leaving that at this.
2) Have I considered having Heroic Spirits from Latin America? Yes. Will I be having any in this work... eh... not likely. In essence, the servants that will appear in this will belong to one of three categories or more: figures I wish Type-Moon would have used by now, figures that enable interesting conflicts/scenarios or push the limits/raise interesting questions as to what is theoretically possible within the FATE IP, or what I think would be interesting pairings to either have work together or fight against one another. The issue that puts Latin American servants in is that I know next to nothing about Latin America, and as such don't know anything about their heroes/villains, or particularly care for them (hard to care about things you don't know, you know). As such, I can confidently say that, currently, I don't have any planned Heroic Spirits from Latin America. All that said though... I don't have all 49 servants set, so who knows? Maybe I'll end up finding someone interesting in my spare time somewhere down the line? But to be completely honest... it's not likely, and I wouldn't expect there to be any more than 2-3 at the very most, if any do show up at all. Latin America has simply never interested me when compared to the rest of the world.
3) No idea what you mean by the avengers practically wrote themselves? While I admit I do plan on having one Avenger Heroic Spirit in this work, I have yet to actually introduce them in this work, and I don't plan to for some time still.
