Chapter 56: Rinne's Past

"Papa's going to school today."

Rio said cheerfully.

"Like I care."

Marina folded her arms.

"Alright, I will be off. See you, Rio, Marina."

Rinne smiled as she hugged her daughter and her caretaker, before stepping out.

Today would be the first day of school, and she decided to attend it as well. The reason was simple: Shido would be going as well!

Since he couldn't find a way to return to the original world, he decided to get used to the living conditions of this world for the time being. To start it off, he must attend school like everyone.

Although he was 18-19 years old, he did not have a high school diploma here. He thought about making a fake diploma with the power of [Haniel], but he decided not to abuse the Angels. Therefore, he needed to start from high school.

Five minutes before the bell rang, Rinne made it to the classroom and checked the surroundings, finding Shido in his seat. He was reading a book by himself, avoiding interaction with everyone else.

"What book are you reading?"

She walked up to him, asking gently.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude."

He answered lightly.

"Emmm…what kind of book is it?"

"The relationships between characters are complicated, so I can't say much."

She tried to make him talk more, but he wouldn't oblige.

Rinne understood that he must be acting cold and distant on purpose, after all, he promised his girlfriends that he would not talk to other girls at school. And now, he was acting like a nerd who got his nose stuck in a book, so nobody would find him interesting to befriend with.

When she tried to talk more, the bell rang suddenly, and the teacher arrived. Sighing silently, she got back to her seat. She would talk to him more after the class ended.

During self introductions, Shido talked like a dead fish, showing no interesting traits of his. In this case, nobody really paid attention to him, much to his relief.

When it was Rinne's turn, she stood up with a smile while fixing her gaze at Shido:

"My name is Rinne Sonogami, and I am a Spirit."

Shido widened his eyes in shock as he heard this bombshell.

"My hobbies are cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping. I have been taking care of a certain childhood friend for years, but he somehow forgot about me. This guy has a lot of girlfriends, so I might not stand a chance."

She continued as she looked at Shido gently, who was staring back at her intently.

"Therefore, I transferred school here and hope to start over. Pleased to make your acquaintance."

She bowed before sitting down again.

With this, everyone in the classroom roared.

"Who the hell is that bastard?"

"How dare he leave such a cutie behind?"

"I know I can treat you better than he can."

"And any girl like you deserves a gentleman!"

As expected, they ignored the first thing she said, and only paid attention to her cooking skills, cleaning skills, and failed romantic experience. They determined that this girl would be the perfect romantic partner for a guy to have.

Shido, on the other hand, felt his head in pain as he tried to reminisce about the details that she laid out for him. She was a Spirit? And she knew that he had many girlfriends? Could she be the one responsible for summoning him to this world?

Shido could barely wait for the class to end!

And finally, after a seemingly one hundred years of solitude, the savior bell rang, and he quickly approached Rinne, hoping to have a word with her.

However, the other students got in his face, and asked her a bunch of fatuous questions.

Rinne made the excuse of wanting to go to the restroom and dismissed them politely. Then, she grabbed Shido's arm and ran to the rooftop, much to his surprise, but he let it happen.

After making sure nobody was around, Shido quickly asked:

"Are you a Spirit? Did you summon me here? What is your goal?"

"Yes, I am a Spirit, but I did not summon you here." Rinne gave a wry smile, and it made Shido more confused. "I want to help you remember me, Rio, and Marina. And I also want you back to your world."

However, after she spoke, Shido felt his head hurting again, and he gruntled in pain.

"Shido?"

She asked in concern, but suddenly, the door burst open!

"Hey! The rooftop is off-limits at this time!"

The guard shouted loudly.

—Back to the present—

"Jesus Christ, I'm sick of this shit!"

Ren cursed as she fired another round of consecutive energy attacks at Mayuri and Rinne. As a result, [Kerubiel] was shattered into pieces.

"Don't say his name in vain!"

Mayuri snapped back defiantly, regenerating the broken angel immediately. But at the same time, more sweats appeared on her beautiful face, indicating that she was getting closer to her limits.

"Whatever! I say what I want!"

Ren sneered in contempt as she threw dozens of vines forward, wrapping them around the surface of [Kerubiel]. With a snap of her fingers, the vines started clenching.

Mayuri gritted her teeth as she raised her hands, maintaining the defense of her Angel to the best of her ability. However, a crack appeared on the top of the barrier.

She quickly fixed the crack, before another one appeared elsewhere. This was depleting her reiryoku at a faster rate.

"Please…..Rinne….Be quick…."

—Flashback—

Lunchtime.

Shido asked Rinne if she could come with him to the rooftop, and she nodded. But suddenly, his phone rang.

"Hey, Muku."

He answered.

"Okay, I will be there. But can I…oh, alright…. Love you. Bye."

His facial expression changed dramatically as he spoke. And when he hung up, he looked at Rinne apologetically.

"Sorry, maybe another time."

Rinne immediately understood what happened.

As it turned out, the girl who crossed to this world today was Mukuro Hoshimiya, who was quite possessive of her lover. She probably saw her alone with Shido on the rooftop earlier, and she did not want him associating with her. Therefore, she asked him to have lunch with her instead. And Shido, out of love for her, decided to prioritize her needs first.

Smiling bitterly, she accepted the results. Even so, she did not give up.

"After school, come to the soccer club tryouts. I will be there too."

Leaving such a proposal, Rinne headed to the cafeteria.

"Nushi-sama, try this."

"Thanks, Muku….Hm, it's so yummy! Did you make this?"

"Mun, did Muku do a good job?"

"Of course, what a good girl~"

Shido patted Mukuro's head affectionately as he bit the octopus sausage that she fed him.

The couple had been feeding each other for quite a while, enjoying their time in the sweetness of love. And to make things better, nobody was around to look at them; after all, they were at home right now!

Shido had rented an apartment that was suitable for a few people to live in. And where did the money come from? By publishing light novels that he copied from his original world! Things started to work out better for him as a result, since he got a stable home and a steady income. Of course, all would be better if he could go back to the real home.

"Muku, I would like to play soccer after school. Can you wait for me?"

"Fumun, sure. Please spend time with Muku soon."

After school.

Shido went to try out for the soccer club, and to his joy, Rinne was here as well.

Before they could speak, the team captain conducted a friendly match between 11 freshmen and 7 seniors. Lucky for Shido, he was the first freshman to be chosen to play.

Rinne gave him an encouraging smile, hoping that he would break a leg out there. However, due to his promise with his girlfriends, he decided not to stand out too much and simply maintained a mediocre performance. Within half of the game, a handsome guy with blonde hair from the freshmen team became the MVP, stealing the gazes of all girls.

All but one.

Rinne was still cheering on Shido wholeheartedly. No matter how well the others were performing, she only had eyes for him, and she knew that he was better. She even stood up and waved in his direction.

Suddenly, someone kicked the ball high for the goal, but it curved in an unexpected direction, heading toward the pink-haired girl!

And to her surprise, she stepped on an empty Soda can at the same time, accidentally tripping herself over!

In the nick of time, Shido protected her from the dangerous soccer ball!

Nobody saw how he got there, only when he blocked the ball did they finally notice him.

This soccer ball contained enough momentum to leave bruises on a girl's face, but this guy took the attack with his back. Even with the shirt on, the audience speculated that he must have suffered quite some bruises.

Despite that, he insisted on taking the girl to the infirmary first.

Fragmented applause sounded off, which soon escalated into a thunderous one.

In the Infirmary.

"Are you okay, Shido?"

"Of course, but are you okay, Sonogami-san?"

Rinne asked in concern, but Shido simply smiled. As it turned out, neither of them could get hurt from a mere soccer ball. But still, she felt a bit hurt when he addressed her by her last name.

"Could you call me 'Rinne' instead?"

"Sorry, but we barely know each other."

Hearing these words, Rinne bit her lips as she stared at Shido intently.

Shido felt a bit uneasy, shifting his gaze away. When he wanted to speak, the school doctor knocked on the door, startling the two.

"Sorry to interrupt, but let me check your wounds first, Itsuka!"

"Wait, shouldn't you check up on her instead?"

"I heard that you got hit by the soccer ball, not her."

"But still, I believe she sprained her ankle."

The school doctor insisted on checking Shido's conditions, but he protested and mentioned that Rinne might be hurt. Therefore, she checked on her foot, and it turned out to be completely fine. Done with her first patient, she took him to the other side of the infirmary, urging him to take off his shirt so that she could take a look. Even so, he wouldn't give an inch, but Rinne, on the other hand, encouraged him to have his back checked.

Having no choice, Shido obliged and followed the doctor to another section.

"Shido, you are really a dummy."

Rinne sighed lightly as she stared at his backside.

But suddenly, a tiny black hole appeared behind her, and a golden key-like object poked out of it. inserting its tip inside her head!

"Segva."

Rinne couldn't react to what was happening, all she heard was a soft and gentle voice that belonged to a young girl. In the next moment, her eyes lost their spirit.

"Muku's sorry, but it's better for you to forget about Nushi-sama."

'Where am I? Why am I here? What should I do now?'

Rinne asked herself as she quickly got up from the bed.

She didn't remember why she was here, nor what goal she tried to achieve. Therefore, she flew high up in the sky and headed back in a certain direction.

"Mama!"

"Welcome back."

"I'm home, Rio, Marina."

Her family exclaimed happily as they embraced her.

"So, did you make him remember you?"

Marina asked.

"Hmmm? What are you talking about?"

Rinne answered in confusion.

"Papa just saved mama like a knight in shining armor, shouldn't he remember you now?"

Rio asked softly.

"...…? I don't understand, sorry… Who is this….papa?"

"…."

"..."

"HUHHHHHH!?"

Two astonished noises echoed throughout the room.

A/N:

Same old amnesia, it never gets old in stories.
