A jacket was laid over his shoulders but he barely noticed. His sole focus was on his hands. This was his fault. His mom had died because of his ties to Murim. If he had never joined under Yoochun or rejoined the life under Chun this wouldn't have happened.
Why didn't he leave? He could have taken the out his master had given him. Why didn't he take it?!
Hot tears ran down his face. He made no effort to wipe them away. All of his energy had died with his mother. The fire that made him such a strong competitor against the Murim who attacked him. His will was gone.
The cat-headed officer came back with a cup that smelled of hot chocolate. Sad amber eyes looked down at him. Sad but lacking pity. He offered the cup to Izuku who took it though reluctantly.
Carefully he took a sip but the rolling of his stomach wouldn't allow him to take more than that. What was going to happen to him? Without his mother, he didn't have anyone left to stay with. His father abandoned them when he was diagnosed as quirkless.
Would he go into Foster Care? There were horror stories about the System. Being formerly quirkless would not help him. It would most likely end in him being used as a punching bag. Or worse. Wasn't like he could fight back either. They would claim that he was violent. Then he would be kicked out of UA.
And that was only if UA let him keep his scholarship. Currently, Izuku was only able to attend because he was on a full scholarship. His mother had to work two jobs just to keep their heads above water. It was why they set up certain days that they would spend together.
"Kitten," came the soft voice of the cat man, "Can I get you anything? Is there anyone you would like for me to call?"
Izuku said in a croak, "No. Thank you, officer. What is going to happen to me?"
The officer blinked in surprise, "What do you mean?"
"I don't have any family," admitted Izuku, "My dad abandoned my mom and I when I was four."
The man blinked in surprise. Then he said, "You don't know?"'
"Know what?"
Now he was looking up at the man with caution. What did this man know? It couldn't be about his family. His mom was an orphan and there was little chance that his father's family would even know he existed.
He said, "You have an uncle. He's coming to get you now."
Izuku's face twisted with distaste, "My father's brother?"
"No," he denied, "Your mother had an estranged brother. He's coming now."
Izuku frowned, "I didn't know mom had a brother? What's his name? What is your name?"
The man blinked in surprise before he smiled gently as he replied, "I'm Officer Sansa Tamakawa. Your uncle is Detective Tsukauchi Naomasa. He's the lead detective."
A detective? That had to be better than the System. Not knowing the man however made him nervous. His mom had never spoken of having a brother. She always had difficulty even talking about his grandparents. The topic brought about rounds of tears. It caused him to avoid the topic.
A shiver wracked through him. Concern flashed through the amber eyes. Then the officer pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around his shoulders.
Sansa said kindly, "It's going to be okay kid. Nao is a good person and he will look after you."
Before Izuku could reply though the door to the office burst open. A man in a detective's uniform and tan trenchcoat and a matching hat lay on the top of his head. Dark hair could be seen under the hat and equally dark eyes immediately found him.
Izuku flinched at the pain that he saw in the eyes. He knew that the pain was mirrored in his own eyes. Seeing his flinch the detective paused. Worry and uncertainty took the place of the pain. No, it simply masked his pain.
Sansa introduced, "Izuku Midoriya this is your uncle Tsukauchi Naomasa. Nao this is Izuku."
In a warm low tenor, Tsukauchi replied, "It's nice to meet you, Izuku. I'm sorry it couldn't have been under better circumstances."
Unsurely he said, "It's nice to meet you too. I... why did m...om never mention you."
A hand came up to run through the man's dark hair. It was such a wary gesture that Izuku felt for the man. Despite never meeting Tsukauchi's instincts told him that this man was an honest person. Then again he thought that Chun and Yoochun were honest men. Look where that got him.
Tsukauchi said after a moment, "We have been estranged for over 20 years. When our parents passed away I was unable to gain custody of her. She had to go into the system. She never forgave me for it. Not that I blamed her."
His voice sounded like it killed him to say that. If Izuku had to guess he was only two or three years older than his mom. Maybe in his late thirties or early forties. It made sense that over twenty years ago he wouldn't have been old enough to take custody of his sister.
Izuku asked in a small voice forcing away the thoughts of his mom, "What's going to happen to me?"
Tsukauchi replied sounding tired, "I'll complete the paperwork so you can come home with me. Then you can come with me to my apartment. Tonight nothing will happen tomorrow if you feel up to it then I'll take you to get new clothes and anything else you need."
All he could do was nod. That would work. Then he watched as Tsukauchi went about doing paperwork. He still felt cold inside. Was it shock?
Wrapping the jacket tighter around him and pressed his nose against it. Sansa stayed with him while his uncle went to do the paperwork. It only took a few moments for it all to be done.
