Recently, I saw this stage production of Singing in the Rain with one of my friends in it and got inspired to do this. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 2: Singing in the Rain

Miles "Tails" Prower had never been very fond of the rain. Because that usually meant that there was a storm coming.

And where there was a storm, there was thunder.

That loud booming sound in the sky that threatened to destroy his eardrums followed by the bright flash of lightning that always terrified him.

Tails let out a frightened yelp as thunder roared through the sky. He curled himself into a little ball, hugging his tails close to him, eyes squeezed shut and stinging with tears that threatened to fall.

"Go away…" Tails whimpered under his tails, thick tears now rolling down his furry muzzle. "P-Please… go away…"

His ear twitched as he heard footsteps coming up the stairs to the attic before entering the room, creeping closer towards him as the wooden floor creaked below whoever was there.

Tails then suddenly felt a hand rest on his shoulder, causing him to flinch.

"... Tails?"

The young fox's tear-filled eyes snapped open. Slowly, Tails poked his head above his twin appendages to find a certain blue hedgehog, gazing down at him with concerned emerald eyes.

"S-Sonic?" Tails stammered, his voice shaking before he sniffled, tears still running down his cheeks.

Sonic's breath hitched upon seeing the wetness on Tails' muzzle. His baby brother had been crying?

Another loud boom, followed by a flash of lightning, caused Tails to squeak in fright before launching himself at his big brother, wrapping his arms around Sonic's waist and burying his face into his peach-furred chest as he began to sob.

Sonic gently wrapped his arms around Tails, pulling him close while rubbing his back in circling soothing motions. "What's wrong, Tails?" He asked softly. "You don't like thunder?"

Tails pulled back a bit to look up at his brother, shaking his head as he sniffled.

"Can you tell me why?" Sonic asked.

Tails looked down as his lip began to tremble, more tears threatening to spill.

"Hey," Sonic gently placed his finger under Tails' chin, tilting his head up at him, "you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, Tails. But I can't help you out if I don't know what's wrong."

Tails' ears folded as he fiddled with his fingers for a moment. "... I-I never liked the noise it makes." He said quietly. "E-Everytime I hear it, it… i-it reminds me of the night my p-parents... left me. M-My birth parents."

Sonic eyes widened before he pulled Tails into another hug. "Oh, Tails…" He said sadly, holding his little brother close as he began to cry again. "I'm so sorry."

Tails sniffled. "I-It's okay, S-Sonic. You didn't know." He said before he put on a smile, albeit a shaky one. "B-Besides, I have a new f-family now. I-It's a-all g-g-good." His smile trembled, threatening to break as tears continued to fall down his cheeks.

Sonic frowned sadly as he gently cupped Tails' cheeks. "Tails…" He spoke in a soft, brotherly way that made Tails crack. "... it's okay. Let it all out."

Tails' resolve finally crumbled as he threw himself back into Sonic's chest, sobbing profusely as his sorrowful wails echoed through the attic, all while Sonic held him as close as he dared, a few tears even slipping down his cheeks.

After several minutes of non-stop crying, Tails' tears eventually ended as he broke the hug, his eyes slightly red from weeping so much.

Sonic gently put his gloved hand on Tails' shoulder. "You gonna be okay?" He asked.

Tails sniffled, wiping the last of his tears with the back of his hand. "Oh, I don't know, Sonic." He said despondently before he hugged his knees close to his chest. "I'm not sure I ever will be." He said sadly.

Sonic frowned as he tapped his chin, trying desperately to think of some way to make his little brother happy again, to get that adorable smile to reappear on his face.

Suddenly Sonic's eyes lit up as he smiled, an idea immediately coming to him.

"Hey, buddy." He said, getting the fox's attention. "I think I got just the thing to cheer you up."

Tails tilted his head in confusion before Sonic grabbed his hand and slowly led them downstairs into the living room.

From there, they proceeded to the door that led to the backyard.

Tails stiffened as Sonic opened the door, grabbing an umbrella as he walked out onto the deck.

Sonic turned back to see Tails standing petrified in the doorway. "You coming, bro?" He asked.

Tails shook slightly as he shook his head fervently. "I-I can't come out, Sonic." He whimpered fearfully, tears of fear springing out of the corner his eyes. "W-What if there's more thunder and–and-"

"Tails," Sonic spoke up, holding out his hand towards him with a soft look on his face, "do you trust me?"

Tails blinked as he glanced down at Sonic's outstretched hand before looking back up to Sonic's soft and somewhat pleading face.

"Y-Yes." Tails answered before he hesitantly took Sonic's hand. "I trust you."

Sonic smiled with a nod before leading Tails out onto the deck. He then let go of Tails' hand before pulling out his phone from behind his quills and pressing the play button before setting the phone down and opening the umbrella.

Immediately, the stormy air was filled with a soft musical melody as Sonic stepped out into the rain.

Sonic extended his hand out from under the umbrella, letting the rain patter his glove before he grinned.

"Doo-dloo-doo-doo, doo-dloo-doo-doo, doo-dloo-doo-doo, doo-dloo-doo-doo…" Sonic hummed melodically along with the music as he paced along the deck, holding the umbrella above his head.

The music then picked up slightly as Sonic once again held his hand out into the rain as he lowered his umbrella slightly. He then looked at the umbrella and shrugged before closing it, letting it rest on his shoulder as the rain continued to fall, causing him to become totally drenched.

"I'm singing in the rain… just singing in the rain…" Sonic began to sing, much to Tails' surprise. "What a glorious feelin', I'm haaaappy again…"

Sonic then jumped up on one of the pillars supporting the small roof over the deck. "I'm laughing at clouds, so daaaark up above…" He sang, his right arm holding onto the pillar while his right arm extended out into a grand gesture. "The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love…"

Tails, although initially surprised, felt a smile crawling on his face as he watched his big brother sing and dance in the rain. His big brother who had taken him out into the storm to sing this song just to cheer him up.

In that moment, Tails didn't think he could've asked for a better brother.

Sonic jumped down from the pillar. "Let the stormy clouds chase… everyone from the place…"

Sonic then extended his arms and threw his head back, letting the rain hit his face. "Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face." He sang, a wide smile indeed on his face.

He then paced along the deck, twirling the umbrella around his finger. "I'll walk down the lane…" He sang. "With a haaaapy refrain… just singing, singing in the rain."

The music then went completely instrumental for a moment, with loud blaring trumpets as Sonic began to tap his feet on the deck.

"Daaancing in rain…" Sonic sang, tap dancing for a bit before holding his umbrella out and twirling a bit as if he were doing a slow dance. "I'm happy agaaaain…" He sang, extending his arms out and throwing his back like before, letting the rain pelt his face.

Sonic then began to dance again, tapping his feet on the hardwood deck as he held his umbrella close to him, playing it like it were a guitar.

"I'm singing and dancing in the rain…" Sonic sang before doing a little twirl.

The music then blared up Sonic continued to tap-dance, first holding the umbrella out in front of him like a dancer did with a cane before swishing it back and forth like a doggy tail, all the while his movements seemed to match the music beat for beat.

Tails covered his mouth to muffle his laughter, letting several giggles slip out as he watched Sonic continue with this silly dance.

Sonic briefly tossed the umbrella into the air before catching, twirling it around his fingers as he tap-danced down the deck. Coming to a halt, Sonic lowered the umbrella, holding out his hand to feel the rain as he took four exaggerated steps forward before he held the umbrella in both his hands out in front him.

He then tap-danced his way back over to Tails, skipping along the deck before kicking the umbrella up into the air and catching.

Letting the umbrella rest back on his shoulder, Sonic tapped his feet back and forth, running the umbrella along the railing of the deck before opening it again.

Tap-dancing down the deck and back again, Sonic did another graceful twirl, continuing to tap his feet as he edged closer to the edge of the deck. He then placed the end top of the umbrella on the ground as he circled around the open umbrella twice, stretching out the hand to feel the rain before tossing the umbrella up and catching it by the handle.

Sonic skipped along the deck, tapping his feet as he made his way over to Tails before extending his free hand out to him.

The young kit stared at the hand before looking up at Sonic, who smiled encouragingly at him.

Smiling back, Tails took Sonic's hand as the two of them stepped out into the rain, with Sonic briefly holding the umbrella above them before letting it down letting the two of them get soaked by the water falling from the sky.

"C'mon, Tails!" Sonic exclaimed with a smile, still holding the kit's hand as he rushed towards the edge of the deck.

"Right behind you, Sonic!" Tails laughed with a happy smile as he followed his big brother.

Sonic and Tails then jumped from the deck out into the backyard, the two of them twirling together in the rain in a massive circle, the two of them laughing gleefully as they spun, before coming back to the deck.

The hedgehog and the fox walked along the deck, balancing on the edge as they walked in single file. Tails then grasped Sonic's hand again as he playfully kickied up some puddles with a smile before Sonic pulled him back up onto the deck. Sonic and Tails tapped their feet as they danced in a circle before Sonic stamped on a smaller puddle on the deck. The two then jumped down from the deck and onto a particularly large puddle, splashing a ton of water and mud.

Sonic and Tails laughed happily as they splashed around the puddle, the music blaring up with loud trumpets as they jumped up and down and marched around and splashed water everywhere before slowly stepping back onto the deck as the music settled down, taking on a more softening soothing note.

Sonic looked down at Tails, smiling at him as he gave his hand a loving squeeze. Tails smiled back, returning the squeeze.

"I'm dancing… and singing… in the rain." Sonic sang softly as the song concluded.

As the two finished Sonic and Tails both burst into laughter as they leaned against each other.

Once their laughter had concluded, Tails gazed up at Sonic with a big emotional smile on his face. "Thanks, Sonic," He said softly, "you're the best."

Sonic smiled as he wrapped his arm around Tails' shoulder, pulling him into a half-hug. "Anytime, little bro." He said while Tails hugged him back. "Listen, if you're ever feeling down or scared, just know that you can always come to me."

"Really?" Tails asked, looking up at his big brother.

Sonic smiled. "That's what brothers are for. It's what family is for." He said before extending his fist forward. "Power bump on it."

Tails smiled back as he bumped his fist against Sonic's. "Thanks, big bro." He said, his voice shaking slightly with happiness.

Sonic grinned, ruffling Tails' bangs affectionately and earning some giggles from the kit. "C'mon, let's get back inside before either of us catches a cold."

The blue hedgehog and the two-tailed fox headed back into the house, closing the door behind them as the rain continued to fall.

The storm continued on, followed by more thunder and lightning. But unlike before, it didn't bother Tails this time.

His big brother had lessened his fear by singing to him in the rain.
