Act I

Chapter II

A New Road

In the past hour alone, the Abyss was silent as the grave.

Deep beneath the barren mountain range lay a realm like no other. A place where the sun's rays had never reached, a place where only darkness and despair reigned. This place was known as "The Abyss." The underground world was devoid of life, save for the hundreds of dead gods that resided there. They had no power and were cursed to forever linger in the Abyss, cursing the world above for their misfortune.

The ceiling of the Abyss was made up of jagged rocks, creating a dark and foreboding atmosphere. Yet, despite being underground, a smoky sky could still be seen, as the clouds of the Abyss drifted ominously above.

The citizens of the Abyss were monstrous creatures of immeasurable strength, corrupted by a disease known as "Karma." They wished to share this curse with the world above and had been planning to unleash it upon the unsuspecting people of the Human and Light Realms.

The Void Realm, which was the Abyss's true name, was one of the three realms in the world of Teyvat, alongside the Human Realm and the Light Realm. Unlike the Human Realm and Light Realm, which were capable of adjusting to accommodate each other's existence, the Void Realm was devastating to both.

As the winds howled above ground, the citizens of the Abyss began their preparations for the coming storm. They knew that their time had come and that the curse of Karma would soon be unleashed upon the world above. It was only a matter of time before the two worlds collided, and the fate of both realms would be decided.

As the dry arid wind continued to blow over the dead grassy mountain range, the world remained oblivious to the looming danger that threatened to consume it. It was only a matter of time before the Abyss unleashed its wrath upon the unsuspecting masses, and the fate of the world would be decided in the coming battle between the realms.

But those Darkest Hours were still far away.

The trees were quiet, and the wind was gone. A lone figure stood contemplating quietly. The Void Realm fell silent once more, and Lumine felt a sense of relief wash over her. She had grown tired of the constant noise and commotion that her Abyss Mages brought with them wherever they went. The howls of the beasts that roamed the twisted landscape of the Abyss haunted her every waking moment, making it difficult for her to concentrate.

Despite the silence, Lumine knew that it was only a temporary reprieve. The Abyss Mages were always planning their next move, and the creatures of the Abyss were never truly quiet for long. She couldn't let her guard down for even a moment, for the fate of the world depended on her vigilance.

Lumine gazed out into the darkness, watching as the smoky clouds of the Abyss drifted ominously overhead. She knew that the curse of Karma still lingered, waiting for the right moment to strike. She couldn't let that happen, not when the fate of the world was at stake.

As she stood there, alone in the darkness, Lumine made a vow to herself. She would do whatever it takes to protect the people of the Human and Light Realms, even if it meant sacrificing everything she held dear. For in the end, the fate of the world rested on her shoulders, and she would not falter in her duty.

"Not again. Never again."

Khaenri'ah was a scar that will forever linger on her immortal soul.

Shaking her head, Lumine wondered in silent contempt for the sudden silence A rare and apprehensive gift in the Abyss.

The Void Realm had fallen into an eerie silence, as if holding its breath in anticipation. The constant bickering and squabbles among the Abyss's overlords had abruptly ceased, and even their howling laughter of rage and dissatisfaction had disappeared moments ago. It was clear that something had caught their attention and drawn them into a state of contemplation.

As she watched from her hidden perch, Lumine remained indifferent to the goings-on of the Abyssal Gods. Their petty and miserable affairs held no interest for her, at least not yet. She preferred to remain an observer, taking in the drama and chaos of the realm without being a direct participant. Perhaps one day, she would find something worth meddling in, but for now, she was content to simply observe.

She was above petty squabbles for left-overs and false pride.

With a sigh, the Princess of the Abyss settled back into the shadows, her eyes trained on the stillness of the Void Realm. She knew that something was brewing, and it was only a matter of time before the chaos and destruction that defined the Abyss was unleashed once again. But for now, all was quiet, and she relished in the stillness, knowing that it wouldn't last for long.

As she gazed out at the desolate wasteland before her, Lumine felt a twinge of guilt wash over her. It was all too easy to forsake her own humanity, to become something she barely recognized. But she knew that her actions were necessary for the greater good, to finally end her war with destiny and secure a future for herself and her beloved brother.

She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She couldn't afford to hesitate or falter now, not when so much was at stake. With each step forward, she reminded herself of the sacrifices she had made and the atrocities she had committed. All for the chance to finally go home, to be reunited with her family and reclaim what was rightfully hers.

As she journeyed through the barren landscape, Lumine's resolve never wavered. She knew that her path was a difficult one, but she was determined to see it through to the end. For better or for worse, she was a warrior, and she would do whatever it took to achieve her goals.

With her brother by her side, Lumine would continue to fight, to strive, to do whatever it takes to secure a better future. Even if it meant forsaking her own humanity, she knew that it was a small price to pay for the chance at a better tomorrow.

But her brother was not at her side.

Lumine still had no knowledge of the cruel fate that had befallen her brother, nor the harsh circumstances he was in. She was determined to see the devastation wrought by the vicious reality that had taken Aether away from her. Nothing would stop her from finding a way to do so, no matter what it takes.

As she stood there, Lumine felt a sudden, unexplainable wave of sadness and regret wash over her. These emotions, which she had thought were long gone, were now resurfacing unexpectedly. Lumine knew in her heart that what she was feeling was the deep longing for her beloved brother, Aether. The pain of his absence was a constant reminder of the bonds they once shared, and she sorely missed him.

"My Princess, our agents from the surface returned."

Despite being one of Lumine's personal attendants, Ashfreak knew better than to disturb her during her free time. Even if he had something important to say, he understood that Lumine would likely ignore him regardless.

Of course, Ashfreak's real name wasn't actually "Ashfreak," but Lumine had never been particularly talented at naming things. She couldn't simply refer to her servants as Hilichurl #1 and Hilichurl #2 – it would be rude, and Lumine genuinely cared for her hilichurls.

Instead, she had given them names based on their strengths and weaknesses. It was no surprise that her Hydro Mage, for example, had been given a name that reflected their fear of flames. Very spot on.

Lumine brushed aside a strand of her golden hair as she spoke, her eyes glinting with an icy determination. She knew the Abyss Mage, Ashfreak, was a harbinger of trouble and had no intention of entertaining any of his distractions. "I have more important things to attend to than your idle chit-chat," she said, her voice as sharp as a knife. "The silence of the Abyss is a momentous occasion, and I intend to make the most of it. Your agents can convey their message to me later. It will not concern me, regardless."

As Ashfreak slinked away, Lumine allowed herself a small smile of satisfaction. She was a force to be reckoned with, and nothing would stand in her way. The silence of the Abyss was just the beginning, and she had plans to make sure that the world above of those Celestia-worshiping runts would soon tremble at her feet.

In the Abyss, time seemed to lose all meaning. Days could feel like mere hours, and hours could stretch on for an eternity. For Lumine, this shift in perspective was both a blessing and a curse. While it allowed her to console her emotions and soothe her aching soul, it also made her acutely aware of the isolation and solitude that surrounded her.

As she spent more time in the Abyss, Lumine's worldview began to shift. The darkness and emptiness of the Void Realm left her with a deep sense of introspection, causing her to question everything she had ever known. What was the point of her journey, and was it all worth it? These were the questions that plagued her mind as she navigated the treacherous landscape of the Abyss.

Despite the overwhelming sense of loneliness, Lumine found solace in the quiet moments of solitude. She learned to appreciate the small things in life, like the way the jagged rocks glimmered in the faint light of the smoky sky or the sound of her own breath echoing through the empty caverns. It was in these moments that she felt most alive, and most connected to the world around her.

As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months, Lumine began to realize that her time in the Abyss was changing her in ways she never could have imagined. She was becoming stronger, more resilient, and more attuned to the world around her. And as she stood on the precipice of a new adventure, she knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, she would face them with a newfound sense of clarity and purpose.

It was a shame that Aether was taken away from her. This should have been their next adventure, fighting against the injustice of those so-called Archons and Gods. Saving this world from the realm of Celestia's lies and evils would have been their last journey, their Magnum Opus, before they could finally settle down on a grateful world.

As her servant was about to depart, he suddenly felt a surge of courage. "I'll agree to your request, Princess," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "But there's one thing you should know: a rogue Abyss Mage who serves the Abyssal Gods has been causing trouble for the knights of Favonius." Though Ashfreak's face remained hidden, the worry and anxiety in his tone made the princess blink in surprise. This was no small feat, considering her usual unflappable demeanor.

Ashfreak was chosen to be her personal aide, not for his loyalty- which was unquestioned -but for his assurance on her cause. He wanted Celestia to burn more than Lumine did. His worries were her worries.

"Rogue? You mean, the 'Favored One'? Last I heard, he was gathering a small force from the local tribes from the surface. Let me guess, he didn't go far? The Knights of Mondstadt may have an incompetent leader, but their catalog of warriors are something to admire."

Lumine wasn't surprised by the sudden failure of the operation, since sending her own abyss mages to search the ruins of the Thousand Wind Temple was not exactly subtle nor safe for her servants. It was only a matter of time before a retaliation force was dispatched to eliminate the so-called "monsters'' wandering aimlessly in the wild. Adventurers were annoying and are the most common hindrance to their missions to the surface, but they were easy prey mostly. An organized force like the knights were a threat when faced head-on.

Unfortunately, many people are ignorant of the true nature of the Abyss Order and see them only as simple-minded villains. Lumine allows them to think this way because it serves her broader plans.

"Precisely, my Princess," Ashfreak replied. "But our agents would say otherwise."

"Oh?" This time her curiosity peaked. "Pray tell, what have they witnessed that would garner my attention?"

Has the investigation uncovered what she has been researching for the past decade? She is hopeful and optimistic that they have. If her suspicions are correct, her plans will accelerate at a much faster pace. The climax of her dreams of rebellion would finally be within reach, and her destiny would be waiting for her. Lumine had originally expected it would take another decade to find the key to her success, but she is willing to bet that she has finally found it.

"The Favored One expected the knights to retaliate, as your wisdom perceives. But another entity managed to beat them to it, and slaughtered the whole army himself." Ashfreak handed a parchment with scratchy writing of Abyssal words to Lumine.

"Oh, how disappointing," Lumine whispered to herself, feeling let down despite her high hopes. She knew that sometimes fate could be cruel, and she realized that bringing her emotions into the situation had only made things worse. Despite this, she couldn't help but find the report intriguing. As she read it, a feeling of familiarity stirred within her, something that had been dormant for a long time.

It describes how he fights, his mannerisms, and his sudden appearance.

"By himself? Did one man really wipe out an entire army? That's not something you hear every day, and it certainly piques my interest. However, despite its impressiveness, I can't help but wonder why our agents were so fixated on this. As of yet, I haven't seen anything of relevance that would warrant such attention."

Lumine disposed of the paper, uninterested in this conversation seeing as it was going nowhere.

"The individual was strong, your Highness," gulped Ashfreak, unsure if he was willing to test her patience. "He finished off the Favored One, and freed the captives taken."

Captives? Nevermind that, her interest peaked once more, but the lingering sensation remained. "Then why bother?" It was a cruel dismissal, but Lumine witnessed crueler acts by the Gods.

"Well, I would not know how to say this, but the individual has golden hair like yours."

The peaceful aura that once roamed the Abyss had disappeared, replaced by howling winds that sang mournfully. The pressure between two powerful beings was palpable, and the difference in their strengths was immense. One was a star, shining brightly with clear purpose, while the other was a raging, swirl-like entity, a supernova ready to unleash its fury.

Lumine was the supernova, her Golden eyes felt more Void than the darkness around them. Poor Ashfreak was a small star in the presence of a celestial titan.

Ashfreak was once again reminded of his pledge of loyalty and why even the strongest souls and creatures in the Abyss feared the Golden-Haired ruler, who remained unchallenged.

"What?" Lumine hissed. It startled the Abyss Mage, and her growl managed to darken the atmosphere. "What do you mean? Explain."

The Abyss Mage, not wanting to incur the Princess's wrath any further, hastily responds, "My Princess, our own Abyss Mages on the surface detected a familiar source of power. They immediately assumed that it was your personal visit to inspect their progress."

Lumine scoffed, as if she would even bother for a simple task. "What did our agents sense to capture their attention?"

"When one of the Mages dared to inspect closer in the battlefield, he saw a young man with golden hair like yours, and carried the blessings of Barbatos."

Anemo? A common Vision among those in the land of the wind, but her unique soul can collaborate with the natural forces of this world. As long as you ask permission, of course. Asking favors from gods were against her creed. As her power was enough to face one in open combat. Even still...

"One human contraption called a "Kamera" was used to capture the moment when the Favored One was defeated," Ashfreak pulled out a picture and handed it out to his princess. "The striking resemblance was enough to bother you, my Princess. We were curious as to why the human resonated with the natural forces of this world, and why the human's soul felt familiar to yours."

Without hesitation, she greedily snatched the item from poor Ashfreak's hands. As she examined it, she was both shocked and angered by what she saw. If only the Favored One were still alive... Despite her wishes, the image on her hand was an undeniable fact that she could no longer ignore. It depicted her brother's clothes, burnt beyond recognition, and an unfamiliar blade in his hand. His injured face was easily recognizable, but his eyes were different. They were cold, indifferent, and apathetic, a dull golden color staring down at the rotting corpse with a look of emptiness, just like hers.

"Aether."

This changed everything.

The sight of the colossal tree that towered over the Wangshu Inn brought back familiar emotions for Aether. However, he noticed that the top floors of the inn were still unfinished, and it seemed that the ground restaurant was the only source of financial support for the construction. This reminder of his recent failure made his stomach churn with unease. Despite this, the familiarity of the scene helped soothe his nerves somewhat. It was a welcome respite from the unfamiliar surroundings that had been causing him stress.

Aether felt a glimmer of hope that he could move forward and overcome his challenges, just like the inn was slowly but surely being completed.

The journey through the marsh was uneventful, with little Bennett dozing off soon after passing through the stone gate. However, Aether found solace in engaging in a one-sided conversation with the child-like version of his old friend. Surprisingly, talking to Bennett about his likes and dislikes, his favorite things, and his dreams was therapeutic for Aether's senses. As he spoke, memories of their past adventures flooded back to him, reminding him of the joy they shared. The stillness of the marsh was only broken by the sound of Aether's voice, but it was enough to bring life to his journey.

As the caravan came to a stop to take a much-needed break from their journey, a multitude of restless adventurers eagerly disembarked from the carriages in search of ways to pass the time. However, some cautious individuals opted to remain stationary or indulge in the Wangshu Inn's delectable cuisine by spending a few Mora. Allard's personal carriage also halted with the caravan, prompting Aether to exit and explore his surroundings.

Perhaps the weary travelers were hoping to chance upon a new adventure or stumble upon some hidden treasures along the way. Regardless of their motivations, the temporary halt in their journey offered a welcome respite from the grueling trek ahead. As they stretched their legs and took in their surroundings, they couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead on their path towards adventure.

Aether decided to stop his moping and find his own way in this unfamiliar world.

Allard wasn't so sure, as his face scrunched at the mention of going alone. Apparently adventuring in groups was the most common method and the safest way for beginners.

"Are you certain about embarking on this journey alone?" Allard frowned. "While it is commendable that you are brave enough to venture out solo, it's important to be cautious."

Aether rolled his eyes, "I'm no amateur."

"That's what they always say." The old man shook his head. "There has been a significant increase in hilichurl activity in the past month, and many old ruin guards have become active again in the last week."

They could be dealt easily when prepared. Hulking monsters like those had two keen weaknesses that Aether intimately knows. Unless he was too stupid or too distracted to deal with them, Aether was not worried at all. He faced the worst monsters, and metal giants were not one of them.

Not that the aging man would ever know that, as Allard looks weary since they arrived.

"Are you going to assist the rookies or something?" Aether asked, morbidly curious as to where Bennett was destined to stand alone in the world. But Aether had faith, as Allard must have prepped his eventual demise. Most old souls do, as they can feel the end coming.

Allard nodded, "I am. Two teams, Qingce and the marsh around the Wangshu Stop Inn." His eyes roamed around the massive expanse of the marsh. "Personally, I've chosen to travel with the caravan to Qingce Village, as I've reached an age where wielding a sword is no longer feasible for me. It is the safer option for the weak-hearted younglings. Only weak Hilichurls and small slimes to hunt."

"Easy-prey." Aether shrugged. Not all adventurers were purely there for glory, as some prefer exploring and researching. "A good learning spot."

"It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when dealing with dangerous creatures and ruins." The old man's eyes crinkled with amusement for the passionate few adventurers. "Nonetheless, I wish you luck on your adventure, and may you return home safely." Allard gave Aether a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"Please don't underestimate the dangers of the wilderness," cautioned the experienced adventurer, his furrowed brow conveying his concern. "Hilichurls may seem like small fry, but they are crafty and unpredictable. It's always best to be cautious and prepared."

Aether nodded in understanding, appreciating the advice of the elder. "I could take care of myself." He smiled anyway, "But I'll make sure to leave some for the rookies."

Allard had initial doubts about Aether's bold response, but the seasoned warrior's unwavering confidence and aura of experience assuaged them. Despite this, Allard had seen many young men like Aether boast about their abilities, only to end up with a forgotten legacy and an apathetic toast to their name. However, there was something different about Aether that set him apart from the others. Allard sensed that Aether was not just talk, and that his actions would be remembered long after the drinks were finished. Allard's intuition was rarely wrong, and he couldn't shake the feeling that Aether was destined for greatness.

"I have no say as to what you choose for your path, I merely pray to the Anemo Archon of your endeavors. Farewell, young man. To the Stars and Abyss."

Aether blinked at the man's words, but was thankful nonetheless. He may need all the luck in the world, but as if Aether will pray to that drunkard of a god. Buying him a bottle would do better.

"Ad Astra Abyssoque as well, old man," Aether replied, steadying his rucksack behind him. "May fortunes of life guide you well. Especially with little Bennett in tow."

"Hey!" Bennett wanted to retort back, but the boy had a feeling it wouldn't end well. The cute pout he gave was enough to lighten Aether's mood.

Aether chuckled, "Don't worry, my young friend. You will reach your goals in due time. Believe in yourself, and who knows, perhaps fortune will smile upon you soon." While Bennett was already quite resilient, the support of a seasoned "Adventurer" like Aether could give him the fortitude and motivation he needed to overcome the setbacks he has faced on his journey. With Aether's wise words and guidance, Bennett was sure to continue on his path with renewed vigor and determination, knowing that success was just within his reach.

As Aether looked into the old adventurer's golden eyes, he knew that time was catching up with him. He couldn't afford to change the past too much or it might come back to haunt him. The three of them stood in silence, the old man expecting Bennett to say something more. To everyone's surprise, the young adventurer spoke up. "Someday, I'll be just like you, a great adventurer!"

Aether blinked a few times before breaking into a hearty laugh. "I'll be waiting for that day, kiddo. I have high expectations for you. Who knows, maybe one day I'll hear a ballad about the Passionate Flame of Mondstadt." Aether's eyes twinkled with amusement as he thought about the possibilities.

Aether's departure from Bennett was abrupt, but necessary. He couldn't risk getting too close to the boy, not after everything that had happened. Besides, he didn't want to burden him with the weight of his mistakes. As he made his way south, he decided to take a safer route and boarded a ferry at Yaoguang shoal. Aether hoped that the ferry service still existed, but he knew that he couldn't take any chances. Time was of the essence, and he couldn't afford to waste it. So, he set off with a prayer on his lips and hope in his heart. With any luck, he would reach the harbor safely and continue his journey without incident.

The setting sun did nothing to boost Aether's confidence as he had been walking for hours and still hadn't found the ferry service. The broken bridge that lay before him was once whole, a decade ago. It was wide enough to allow two massive wagons to pass through side-by-side. Aether decided to continue his journey by following the beach towards the south, hoping to find some help. However, the shoal was barren, with no signs of any service or anyone to greet him. The only companions he had were the lonely trees, soaked rocks, and a plethora of starconches, which were of no use to him at the moment. Despite the disappointment, Aether kept moving forward, hoping for a better outcome.

"High quality starconch!"

A squeaky voice startled Aether from his brooding as he saw a small figure approaching him by the shore. He recognized the shock of white hair tied in a familiar bang braid on top of her head, held by a brittle stick. A pair of ruby eyes held the brightest of joy, indicating that she was happy to see him.

It seemed that finding a customer at this hour was a godsend for her, as her meager wages might grow.

With a nimble and efficient pace, the young girl approached the frozen man. Aether, on the other hand, thought that this girl looked a little familiar. However, his determined drive to find out why dissipated as he noticed the girl's feet, scraped with sand and blood, the skin tearing away bit by bit. Although it didn't seem to bother her, Aether couldn't help but avert his gaze, afraid that the girl might notice him staring.

"Good day, mister! Take a look! I've gathered these myself."

The innocent ruby eyes of the person unsettled Aether's already aching soul. He felt like he couldn't handle it anymore, but he shrugged off the unpleasant feeling and gave a soft smile before replying, "I'll buy some."

"Really?!"

Something clicked when Aether saw how bright her eyes glowed when he acquiesced to her wares. He remembered that day clearly, as he was still escorting Ningguang around Liyue once when she went for a stroll through the markets. In his dreams of her, and the stories she herself told him, of a little girl who could not even afford sandals made her mark in this world.

A young Jean, an even younger Bennett, and now-

Ningguang.

Aether tried to resist squirming in Ningguang's presence, but the intensity of her attention was becoming unnerving. As he took in her dirtied face, with dried sweat still clinging to her skin, he felt a pang of sorrow. It reminded him of the struggles Ningguang had faced in her younger years, which he had seen in his visions. Despite the difficulties she had endured, she had risen above them and pushed on farther than anyone else ever had.

To her, going without footwear was a minor inconvenience at best, but Aether greatly admires her determination to succeed in life. Despite facing hardships, she refused to let them discourage her, and instead used them as fuel to further her ambitions.

While Aether continued to reminisce, Little Ningguang made her best effort to sell him her wares. "Look," she said, "I gathered these myself. They are of high quality and fresh off the shoals! Here, feel them for yourself, sir."

Aether was caught off-guard when Ningguang handed him a pair of items. It wasn't the sudden action that surprised him, but rather how her hands felt. He couldn't help but notice the rough calluses on her hands, which seemed unfitting for someone as young as her. A feeling of guilt washed over him, causing his sour mood to worsen. He couldn't find solace yet.

Observing the solemn expression of her customer, Ningguang couldn't resist offering a small, reassuring smile. Taking a starconch from Aether's hand, she carefully tiptoed and made an effort to gently place it near the man's ear. Despite feeling exhausted, she always puts her customers' happiness first.

Ningguang leaned her small, light body against him and asked, "Can you hear that, mister?" Although her presence was somewhat comforting, the proximity of another person made him uneasy. "The sea beckons those lost in thought," she continued, "to warn them of changing tides and to offer the serene sensation of the open ocean."

Feeling a bit better, he gently released her hand and lowered it. He couldn't help but admire her kind wisdom, even at such a young age. "Thank you, that was much appreciated."

"Happy to be of assistance, mister!"

Ningguang felt a sense of satisfaction as she saw the brief look of calm and relief on the man's face. She knew that she had just helped another person and was reminded of her dream to help many more in the future. However, before she could celebrate her success, several projectiles were suddenly launched towards them, and she realized that they were in imminent danger.

"Mister look out!"

Acting on instinct, he quickly rolled over and grabbed the child, bracing himself for the explosions thundering across the shoal. Black smoke billowed, filling the shore where they had been moments ago. Aether took a deep breath to steady himself, relieved to see that Ningguang had already headed for cover behind the nearest rock formation. Despite her smart thinking, she decided to let him face their foe, confident that he could handle himself.

Without warning, the ruin guard appeared in the distance and rapidly approached their position. Aether swiftly drew his silver-coated blade and activated his Anemo powers. Suddenly, the ground shook violently, as if a meteor had struck just in front of him. The sand below the ruin guard erupted, creating a perfect opportunity for Aether to strike. However, the ruin guard was quicker and launched a metallic fist towards him from the smoke, narrowly missing Aether who managed to halt just in time. Reacting swiftly, Aether leaped backward, creating some distance between himself and the ruin guard.

The ruin guard aimed to take another swing at Aether, but he swiftly dashed to the side and struck back with his own swing. However, the blade merely clattered off the enemy as if it had hit a rock. Losing his momentum and balance, Aether dodged a backhand strike from the ruin guard and quickly positioned himself in front of it again. Refusing to let the ruin guard catch its breath, Aether charged forward once more. But the machine saw through his charge and quickly smashed the ground between them.

"Damn, physical damage won't work!" Aether cursed as he hopped back, avoiding the aggressive stomp of the ruin guard.

As the fight between them erupted, Ningguang let out a sudden gasp. She appeared frightened and held onto the top of the boulder tightly, as if bracing herself from the sudden rush of adrenaline. The fight wasn't over yet, as she noticed the man was momentarily distracted. Her worried gaze locked onto his own golden eyes.

"HEY! Get down-" he couldn't finish that sentence as the machine slammed him hard, and sent Aether flying to the nearest boulder.

"Mister...? Mister!"

Pain. Aching pain.

With a groan, Aether slowly opened his eyes, feeling a sudden numbness from head to toe. This was the most unpleasant sensation he had experienced since waking up on the beach that fateful night. The similarity to that moment only served to remind him of his recent failures, and he couldn't help but feel terrible about it.

When was the last time he had eaten? Was it a day ago? He briefly remembers having a quiet breakfast with Allard and Bennett, savoring the taste of the small toast and eggs along with the warmth of companionship. Aether enjoyed the brief respite with his old friend, even though young Bennett wasn't particularly close to him. He was grateful to Allard for giving him some peace of mind by distracting him with Bennett's numerous and curious questions.

Aether had a nagging suspicion that the old man was aware of his problems, but he was grateful nonetheless. However, he regretted not taking Allard's warning of danger seriously, which had led him to this predicament - finding himself once again in a stranger's home, injured yet again.

Perhaps he should have been more cautious and listened to the advice of the old Allard. Nevertheless, Aether resolved to learn from his mistakes and make better choices in the future to avoid such situations. After all, the only way to grow is by learning from one's mistakes.

Five years of war, and Aether had yet to grow up.

"I should really stop doing this," sighed Aether, feeling a sense of contempt towards his own actions. He took a deep breath, gathered his thoughts, and made a mental note to be more careful in the future.

As he looked up, he was met with the sight of the bright and early sun. He wondered how long he had been unconscious; was it just a few hours or had he lost an entire night's worth of time? Uncertain of the answer, Aether knew he had to check for himself, but also realized he was on a tight schedule. He couldn't afford to spend time pondering his misfortunes. Aether needed to get back on track and focus on his tasks at hand.

Aether looked down and realized that he was only wearing his coat, which seemed odd. As he scanned the room, he noticed that his metal armor was piled up in the corner, in pieces. Next to the armor lay his once-shattered silver sword. He sighed, realizing that he would have to purchase another sword. However, this time he had enough funds to invest in a much better blade than his last one.

Perhaps he could even commission a master swordsmith to create a custom blade, one that would be both beautiful and deadly in battle.

Like the sword, called the Descension.

From the mutilated hands of his own sister.

Aether's heart ached as he thought about his sister, Lumine. He couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the regret of not being able to save her from the clutches of the Unknown Goddess. Every time he saw the Descension, the sword that had been ripped from Lumine's mutilated hands, he was reminded of his failure.

He wished that he had been stronger, faster, or more skilled in combat- but he only had the power of Anemo and Geo at that crucial time.

Aether had always tried to hide his pain, but it became much harder after the day he lost his sister. Every time he looked at his sword, he was reminded of the tragedy that had befallen his family. Despite the pain that he felt, Aether refused to show any signs of weakness or vulnerability. He learned to push his emotions deep down, burying them beneath layers of stoicism and detachment.

Whenever he was alone, Aether would often growl in pain, the agony of his loss weighing heavily on him. But he refused to let his mental scars show, hiding his grief behind a steely facade. Maybe, he thought to himself, if he had been stronger or more skilled, he could have saved his sister from her fate. But now, all he could do was carry on, fighting to make sure that no one else suffered the same fate as his beloved sibling.

Aether was lost in a sea of pain and mental scars after he lost his beloved sister Lumine.

He found himself in a stranger's room, consumed with anger and self-hatred. But as he thought of Fischl, his lover, the memories of her kind and loving smiles managed to pierce through the darkness of his despair.

Fischl had been his guiding light during those dark hours. She never wavered in her love and support for him, even when he was at his lowest point. Her unwavering faith in him gave him the strength to carry on, and her unwavering love for him helped him heal from the trauma he had endured. It was Fischl's unconditional love that helped him find his way back to himself, and for that, he would always be grateful.

But Fischl was gone now, alongside Paimon and Lumine- on a dead world Aether too left behind.

He was alone now.

Alone in a world without his loved ones, without Lumine, Paimon, and Fischl. A new start, from the sacrifice of his friends and family. He was alone now, but maybe he could form new bonds.

The image of young Jean, little Bennett, and Ningguang made him smile. Wait, Ningguang- ?!

Aether struggled to sit upright on the bed, which was nothing more than a shabby mattress on a wooden frame. As he took in his surroundings, he noticed a massive circular wooden window on his left, which was the source of the bright light that filled the room. To his right, he saw an entrance without a door, revealing a stunning view of blue waters and a horizon of sand. Despite his pain, he couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the scene before him.

Grimacing in pain, Aether gingerly touched his left rib and realized that most of his injuries were massive bruises. The fact that he wasn't bleeding was a good sign, but he knew that he had been in a brutal fight. It had been a while since he had faced a Ruin Guard, and he had forgotten just how hard they could hit. He vowed to be more cautious in the future, especially since he couldn't afford to be injured again while on his quest to save the future of this world.

A small gasp caught Aether's attention, and he turned towards the open entrance of the room. He let out a breath of relief when he saw Ningguang standing there, her worried ruby eyes staring at him in shock. But her expression quickly changed, and the joy on her face was that of a child who had just received a wonderful surprise.

Aether couldn't help but smile at the sight of her happiness, the dark thoughts in his mind now gone.

"Mister! You're okay! I thought you were hurt." As Aether approached her, Ningguang threw her arms around him in a tight embrace. He could feel her warmth and affection.

Despite the discomfort, he allowed the tiny form to cling to him tightly, grateful for the comforting touch. Aether couldn't feel anything in his chest, and his thoughts raced back to the battle he had fought against the Ruin Guard. He couldn't help but wonder if he had pushed himself too far this time.

He had been fighting non-stop for barely a few days. From assaulting the Abyss Fortress, dealing with the commissions of slimes to earn his share of Mora, and to the massacre he committed to the Hilichurls when he heard about it. And now, without another day of rest, he fights a Ruin-Guard on a battlefield not of his choosing.

"It's alright, I've faced worse before," Aether grinned, trying to alleviate Ningguang's worry as she finally let him go. Despite the unbearable pain that suddenly struck his raised arm, he held up a hand to show he was alright. He was grateful for her timely intervention, knowing that he wouldn't have been able to do anything without her help. "Thank you so much for saving me," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I owe you my life." Aether knew that he had narrowly escaped death, and he was glad that Ningguang had been there to protect him in his time of need.

Ningguang's cheeks turned bright red as she realized how close she and Aether were. Her sudden squeak of surprise and embarrassment startled poor Aether, who thought nothing less of it.

He assumed that she was just scared of the Ruin Guard they had just encountered.

But for Ningguang, being near Aether always elicited a rush of emotions that she couldn't quite understand. The feeling of excitement and adrenaline that she experienced in his presence was foreign to her but not unpleasant. In fact, she found it sickeningly sweet.

The girl struggled to organize her flurry of thoughts, and Aether couldn't help but recall the events of yesterday. The day had been chaotic, a whirlwind of emotions that left them both feeling overwhelmed.

Aether struggled to get up, the Ruin Guard's massive foot pinning him down. Barely conscious, he attempted to remove the machine, but lost the willpower to conjure a simple wind. Believing he was done for, Aether was relieved Little Ningguang had escaped. Suddenly, Geo particles struck the Ruin Guard, causing it to tumble in disorientation. With his last ounce of energy, Aether summoned his blade and plunged it into the machine's weak point, the Core. It was a moment of pure determination and bravery, fueled by the memory of his sister and the love of his companions' sacrifices.

He refused to die, not after what they paid to get him here.

Aether struggled to recall the events leading up to him being knocked unconscious, but the haunting cries of a young girl still echoed in his mind. Suddenly, his attention was drawn to Ningguang's nervous form standing beside him. He couldn't help but notice the newly acquired Geo Vision that was strapped to her hip with a small rope.

He doesn't know what to think of it. "Uh, congrats by the way?" Aether was not sure if this was how his Ningguang got hers, but she always teased him about its origins.

"Thank you," Ningguang stuttered in response to Aether's words. She had been in a state of shock for hours after receiving her Geo Vision, feeling as though she were still dreaming. It wasn't as useful as Mora, but the fact that it was bestowed upon her by the blessings of Rex Lapis himself gave her a renewed sense of purpose and direction. Ningguang was confident that she was on the right path.

"Ah, finally awake I see."

As Aether sat in the small shack, an old woman from a previous timeline entered, and he was surprised to see a familiar face. Granny Chu.

Despite her hunched form and evident age, her melancholy expression reminded him of a lonely old woman gazing out at the sea. Aether remembered her tragic tale of loss and solitude and could relate to her pain, having experienced countless losses himself.

Both Aether and Granny Chu longed to relive treasured moments of happiness that were now forever out of reach. However, while Granny Chu had lost her love but moved on, Aether's attempts to remedy past tragedies had only made things worse.

He couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Granny Chu's resilience and determination to move on despite her pain.

In that moment, he realized that he needed to find a way to let go of his own past and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

"Granny!" Ningguang exclaimed, her face lighting up with joy at the sight of the old woman.

Aether couldn't help but notice how her boundless energy had returned, just as he had witnessed in the past timeline. Despite being a refined woman, Ningguang still held the same deep respect for the elderly.

Aether felt a sense of admiration for Ningguang's unwavering character, and he knew that he could count on her to always do the right thing, even in the most challenging of situations. As they approached the old woman, Aether couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to meet the Tianquan's soft side that rarely anyone ever saw.

Only he and Paimon had the privilege to learn about this old lady from Ningguang herself. It meant that she trusted them greatly.

"Greetings," Aether said, introducing himself with a hint of surprise in his voice at Granny Chu's sudden appearance. "My name is Aether, and I'm a traveler passing through. I'm afraid your granddaughter and I had a run-in with a Ruin Guard. It was my mistake, and I apologize for putting Ningguang in danger." As he spoke, he couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that weighed heavily on him. Despite his regret, he was determined to make things right.

As Aether made his proclamation, Ningguang's mood turned sullen. She felt guilty for distracting him in the first place and was about to retort when Granny Chu's small chuckle stopped her.

"Nonsense, young man," Granny Chu said. "Both of you were not at fault for anything." The elderly woman spoke up and reassured them that neither of them were at fault. She went on to express her gratitude to Aether for his heroic actions, noting that she couldn't imagine Ningguang fending for herself against a Ruin Guard, Vision or no Vision.

"Because of you, young man, she was able to go home once again to eat my dinner and share more laughs with this aging woman. Thank you." Granny Chu slowly bowed her head.

The kind words and gratitude from Granny Chu touched Aether's heart, and he felt a sense of fulfillment knowing that he had made a difference in someone's life. At least in this new world, he made a good start.

The woman's emotional words managed to stir Aether's hope again.

Ningguang, on the other hand, tried to hide her embarrassment behind a pout of false contempt. However, the blush on her face gave her away, as memories of Aether's kind actions flooded her mind once again.

While she was relieved that no one was held accountable for the incident, she still couldn't shake off the guilt of indirectly causing harm to one of her customers. Her pride had taken a hit, and she struggled to come to terms with her role in the situation.

But as she looked at Aether, her brave customer, she realized that she had a true potential connection in him, someone who had her back no matter what. She vowed to be more careful in the future, to avoid causing any more harm, and to be a good friend to Aether in return for all the kindness he had shown her.

He could've abandoned her, but he didn't. He should have ran away, like any sane person, but faced the danger all the same. Ningguang had to repay him somehow, and she doesn't know how to.

Ningguang was pleasantly surprised by Granny Chu's heartfelt words of affection towards her and their time together. It was clear that the old woman treasured her company, and this realization brought Ningguang a sense of comfort and relief. Knowing that she had made a positive impact on someone's life, especially someone as kind and wise as Granny Chu, made her feel grateful and fulfilled. She couldn't help but smile at the thought of the special bond that had formed between them.

Aether knew better, of course. Having another loss, especially a child, would definitely break the poor woman's soul. If it wasn't broken already. He took this as his cue to comfortably shift the conversation.

"Ningguang was it?" Aether asked, once again feigning his knowledge of her name. "We didn't exactly have the pleasure to introduce ourselves, did we? My name is Aether."

"Of course, Mister Aether!" Ningguang's joy at finally being addressed was like a warm balm to his soul. As she spoke, her ruby eyes shone brighter, and her charming smile widened, bringing a sense of comfort and relief to Aether's aching heart. Although his pain didn't completely go away, her presence helped ease his discomfort, if only for a moment.

Aether couldn't help but chuckle at her polite address, "It's just Aether, I'm not that old... yet."

He knew that, as a traveler, he had been alive for several centuries, if not millennia. His many adventures had taken him to far-flung corners of the world and beyond, and he had seen civilizations rise and fall, kingdoms crumble, and empires grow. He had fought in countless battles and had honed his skills to become a formidable warrior.

But despite all of his experiences, Aether remained humble and approachable, never forgetting his roots or losing sight of his humanity.

The little girl thought hard of it but conceded to his request. If it made the man happy, then Ningguang wouldn't argue. Her customer's happiness comes first.

"Both of you get along well," Granny Chu noted, easily noticing the quick acquiesce between them.

"Well, your granddaughter is very polite. I bet she'll grow into a charismatic woman." Aether smiled at the image of a lady-like Ningguang of the Liyue Qixing.

The confident tone implied along with the utter certainty in his face made the little girl blush, but the old woman agrees. "I know she will, but little Ningguang isn't my granddaughter," the old woman said with a wistful sigh.

Aether arched his eyebrow, pretending to be surprised. He had already suspected as much - despite Ningguang's long stay with the woman, it was clear that they weren't related in any way. They were simply two souls who had found companionship in each other's company - a lonely old woman and an orphan girl, bound together by circumstance until the day they parted ways.

He couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness for the woman, knowing that the loss of her only companion would be a heavy burden to bear. But he also knew that he couldn't linger on that thought for too long.

He perked a brow, "She isn't? That's a surprise, with how close you two are… I apologize if I assume too much."

The old woman chuckles, "No need, but sometimes I wished that was the case." Granny Chu gave Ningguang a cheeky smile, "She is family, through and through. I expect grandchildren, though."

The poor girl squawked in embarrassment. Both chuckled at Ningguang's expense.

The conversation flowed seamlessly as the morning hours slipped away, and before they knew it, noon had arrived. Granny Chu had already prepared a delicious lunch for them, and despite Aether's protests about being treated to a free meal, both ladies were stubborn in their insistence. As his stomach growled with hunger, Aether finally capitulated, and the three of them sat down to share a quiet meal. The aroma of the food filled the air as they ate, and Aether couldn't help but feel grateful for the warmth and kindness of his hosts. It was in moments like these that he realized how much he had missed having a sense of family and community in his life.

As Aether stumbled out of the shack nestled within the massive tree, he surveyed the sprawling coastline of the marsh. Memories of the day he and Paimon had accepted a commission to clear out a couple of Hilichurl tribes at the shoal flooded his mind. In the distance, he spotted a solitary structure perched on the peninsula of the small coast. It appeared to be a makeshift treehouse, and as he approached, he noticed several young men and women residing there. Granny Chu, a wise elder, was also among them, offering her guidance and wisdom to the group.

Aether couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for these resilient individuals who had carved out a life for themselves in the midst of such a challenging environment. As he approached the treehouse, he could hear the sounds of laughter and conversation emanating from within. It was clear that this was a tight-knit community, bound together by their shared struggles and triumphs. Aether knew that he had much to learn from these brave souls, and he felt honored to have been welcomed into their midst.

It was only later when Ningguang brought him here, Aether realized how connected the world was. Of course, for now it was only the two of them- but as the years come by, Ningguang will later leave the safety of this place for Liyue Harbor. And Granny Chu will soon open her doors to strangers that needed help.

As Aether gazed out at the sea, memories flooded back of a time when this place was a haven for the weary and lost.

In those days, Granny Chu was a savior to many, including Aether himself. However, in the current timeline, it seemed that the place was simply home to Granny Chu and her adoptive child. Most of the retired sailors and astrologers who had once found refuge here were long gone. Still, Granny Chu did her best to make them feel at home.

Aether remembered how he had once wondered how Granny Chu managed to keep the place running, but now he had a good idea. It was thanks to Ningguang's generosity that Granny Chu was able to keep the place up and running. Despite her powerful position, Ningguang had a kind heart and understood the struggles of those who felt powerless.

"Quite the place for solitude, isn't it?"

Granny Chu decided to follow him as well, both standing at the water's edge, and gazing at the wide ocean. The peaceful silence was shared between them, and Aether noted the old woman was silently fretting about something.

Aether was lost in thought when Granny Chu's sudden words startled him. Her voice was so quiet, barely a whisper, but her words were clear and distinct. "She feels guilty, you know," she said. Aether could sense the weight of Granny Chu's words and the gravity of their meaning.

Aether couldn't help but notice the poor girl's unwavering attention to his needs. From the moment he awoke, Ningguang had gone out of her way to make him feel comfortable, even offering to feed him during lunch. While he appreciated her concern, Aether couldn't help but feel embarrassed by her persistent attention. He politely declined her offer, not wanting to burden her any further. Despite his reluctance, Aether couldn't deny that Ningguang's kindness and concern for him had touched him deeply.

It reminded him of simpler times.

"I know," Aether nodded solemnly. "She had a rough time, I suppose. Ningguang's still probably shaken by yesterday's events." Any person would, but Aether went through a war that shook the whole word. It was a disappointing encounter at best. It almost killed a good friend and nearly ended the world's future then and there.

"Maybe," the old woman agreed, "She did come home with an injured stranger, and spent the entire night patching you up. The poor girl was definitely frightened, but not for her sake." Granny Chu smiled, remembering how scared Ningguang was, but still fretted over the unconscious stranger like her own life depended on it.

Ah, Aether knew what she was talking about. "I see. How did Ningguang and I get here anyway?"

"Oh, a fisherman named Yu made an agreement with Ningguang to ferry her off and onshore around the shoal. The young man was frightened of the Ruin Guard remains you left behind. Yu was hesitant to help you, but little Ningguang would have none of that. Nothing was said between them when they arrived, but the terrified look on the young man's face told me everything."

Aether bet the fisherman was more scared of Ningguang than both he and the Ruin Guard could muster. Not that Aether blames him, Ningguang can be quite terrifying when things don't go her way. Aether learned not to piss her off as her bodyguard once. The poor merchant was still probably having a hard time composing himself around the Tianquan's presence before the war.

"When are you going to leave?"

A question that Aether asked himself some time ago, but he knew not to stick around for another day. "In a few hours, the main road is merely a few ways from here, right? I could handle it myself. You wouldn't need to bother with me again."

There was a certain twinkle in the old woman's eyes. "Oh, it wasn't that, young man. It's just Ningguang might follow you."

"Eh," Aether nearly lost his footing, he couldn't properly process what she had just said. "W-what do you mean she would follow me?"

"I already knew little Ningguang might leave soon." Granny Chu sighed, but she looked towards the sea with acceptance. "Actually, she spent most of her days at the shoal to gather enough Mora to go to Liyue Harbor. Are you going there, by any chance?"

Yes, actually. "That was the plan." Aether slowly said, already knowing what the old woman would ask. "I was headed there anyway."

Granny Chu nodded, satisfied with his answer. "I wish to ask a favor, Traveler."

"Of course, I owe both you and Ningguang. I'll do it to the best of my abilities."

"Then let her go with you," she said with a grin. "It'll be safe for her, and I would feel calm and happy knowing she had your support and protection." Granny Chu shook her head slowly, "As to what happened yesterday, it only reinforced my belief of the unsafe roads that may lead to the Harbor."

"I suppose," Aether shrugged noncommittally. It may never have happened if he was not around. Did his presence alone change things across the whole world? It was a scary thought Aether will not dare think further on.

"Then, if you may permit this old woman's humble request, look after Ningguang?"

Aether does not think this was the right idea, when did he ever think of such doubts? He was strong, and if well-prepared, could take on armies. Guerilla-warfare, raiding, and pricking, Aether could just choose. But with a child in tow? A dear friend that was vital to the survival of humanity? Not a chance, but Aether wondered how Ningguang thought of that.

He voiced this question to the old woman, and she merely laughed.

"Knowing the stubborn girl, she'll shadow you every step on the way to the Harbor."

Aether grunted, as he knew his answer. "She can go with me." Much safer that way, and it would ease his mind. He knew that Ningguang always saw opportunities and took them head-on, but this was seriously dangerous. But at least she took a bet on him, and with or without knowing it, Aether will make sure no trouble would ever drop on her head. "I'll keep her safe."

There was a sigh of relief, and a weary chuckle. "I'll speak with the girl, you shouldn't worry about her." Seeing as Aether nodded back, Granny Chu went back inside of the shack. Probably to reassure Ningguang's troubles, and help her pack her stuff. "Drilling the girl about this endeavor will be a futile effort, but I supposed a goodbye would do well."

Despite his confidence in his abilities, Aether couldn't shake off the doubts that plagued his mind. The fear of ruining the past timeline and wasting the opportunity to secure a better future was overwhelming. He knew that having a companion on his journey would alleviate some of the tension and provide much-needed support. However, he found himself pondering alone by the shore, wondering what would happen next.

Aether resisted the urge to pray to the drunk god, Barbatos. He had already faced enough troubles and didn't want to count on any "blessings" from the unpredictable deity. He knew that he needed more than that. Aether yearned for a sense of purpose and direction, something that would give him the confidence to move forward. He needed a plan and a clear path to follow, one that would help him navigate the challenges ahead and achieve his goals.

Maybe visiting a Statue of the Seven along the way wasn't a bad idea. Geo wasn't a terrible pick.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

After adding a few more paragraphs and scenes, I decided to also fix the order of each scene. This was also Ganyu's chapter and introduction, but I decided to do that later. It makes no sense to add Ganyu this early, so I decided to do it in the middle of the arc instead.

There has been some pondering to add more Lumine scenes to this arc, but I'll think about if it was worth it or rather useful to Aether's aimless wander in Liyue. If I am convinced, I might add OC Abyss Order members, and even create an official sub-plot of Lumine's journey to confront Aether in the Snezhnaya Arc as was originally planned.

Apart from that, I decided to remove the Artifact story of the huntress. I'll add it back to the Sumeru Arc after the Snezhnaya Arc, when Aether seeks knowledge and answers.

That is all for now, I'll see where this rewrite goes.
