I began to eat my food and realized that Lenalee was pretty much flirting with me, I can honestly say that the number of women who ever even tried to love me could be counted with the fingers of my hands.
"Well as long as there is no innocence retrieval mission, I guess I am going to have some free time, say Lenalee do you know anything I can help with around here? Otherwise, I am liable to get bored." She smiled and began to giggle. She just told me if there is something that there is never a lack of are things to do to help around here.
Lenalee finished her meal and I went for another serving of food, and when I finally finished eating I carried the two empty trays to a nearby table and thanked the people who prepared my food. I walked over to Lenalee and we began to exit the mess hall as we walked out I noticed something that I never wanted to see anywhere again, it was the remains of the Ghost of Mater, the broken remains of the doll that once came to life thanks to a piece of innocence.
I was furious, these remains were supposed to be left with the remains of the person she loved most, that was one of the few things that felt good about that mission, that at the very least the two lovers would be allowed to rest in peace, together, but here it was the remains of that doll. I was furious, as I walked with the people from the lab who were carrying it in a crate going to the underground area of the headquarters.
"And here I was thinking the Black Order was a place to defend the innocent, I never realized that grave robbing was something the Order would consider honorable, mind telling me where are you taking those remains that you took after disturbing their grave?"
I saw one of them smile, "Ah, Allen, yes, I read your report about his doll and that human, while yes, ideally we would have left these remains where they are but we are fighting in desperate times, we need everything we can learn about innocence to become stronger and stop the evil plans of the Millennium Earl."
I relaxed for a little bit, "Guess you wanted to see why the innocence managed to turn that doll into a human while the innocence was inside her, I see, most people would consider that a miracle, so it is no wonder that you guys would want to study the remains, but please, as a favor to me, please treat her with some respect, I didn't know her for long but do this for my friend."
They all smiled and told me that they would treat her no different than how they would treat a human, Lenalee was holding my shoulder, "Why ask that?" I told her that in my life I got few chances to see couples who truly loved each other, that doll and the human who lived with her, truly loved each other, I told her that it was a tragic romantic scene. No better and no worse than Romeo and Juliet.
She noticed something on my face and used a handkerchief to clean it, "No reason to be sad, never thought a tough guy like you would be sad enough to cry. Guess I have a lot of things to learn about you." I told her that moments of true happiness were rare for most people, but in my family and my life, they were even more so. Especially with a master like General Marian Cross.
She relaxed and decided to walk with me for a little while and decided to give me a better tour of the Headquarters of the European branch of the Black Order. The library I had to admit was a treasure, I simply loved the way the books were organized and so easy to get to. I picked up what seemed to be a rather simply medical book which Lenalee was surprised about.
"I don't see why you are so surprised Lenalee I am the one that is shocked that at the very least some people who are sent on Innocence Retrieval missions are sent with some basic battlefield medical skills. I like to learn something new every single day. I often held the belief that as long as I keep moving forward, eventually, I can reach the goal, and a safe and peaceful world is not such a bad goal, is it?"
She laughed and said no, it was a nice sentiment at the very least, but in truth, it was a sentiment that to some would seem impossible. "Allen, besides my sunny disposition, trust me, every person who works in the Black Order has one thing in common, we all know loss, we all know pain, and we all know what is at stake. But you are right, we should send someone with basic aid training on teams. I tried to get my brother to do that."
I know exactly who her brother is, and I will always wonder how in the world would a guy like him who was as clumsy, and disorganized as he was if his office was anything to go on, ever managed to become the head of an entire branch. Honestly, if I had to assign him a position I doubt that he could do the job of a janitor adequately enough to remain employed much less branch leader.
As I keep reading I began to notice that a lot of these so-called facts that they have in some of these books are flat out wrong. For instance, how the Pyramids of Giza were built, he knows for a fact that no slave labor was ever used to build them, they were built by very talented and highly paid workers, and, the position of being one of the men who would build one of these things was very sought after when these builders die, they would be buried with honor inside what essentially was a tomb meant for royalty.
I decided to take notes of things these books got blatantly wrong, why not? It was sort of fun, and it sort of reminded me of the things I have seen in my long life. One of the researchers began to laugh and he walked over to me, "You know you look like a college student writing notes and reading those books. My name is Jake, Jake Russel, I am one of the people that do research for the Black Order." He began to look at my notes and looked shocked.
"Some of the facts in these books are completely wrong, take slavery, for instance, everyone believes they were all treated horribly, well I know for a fact that slavery as cruel of a practice as it is, was also practiced by people who needed money to get seed to plant a crop, repair a home, or provide for their loved ones, and they sold themselves into slavery for a year or two."
I continued taking notes and told him and Lenalee a story of a man who needed money to feed his poor widowed mother and four siblings, this man became the slave of a blacksmith for two whole years, and in those two years he became a rather adept blacksmith himself, and in fact, the person who once owned him wanted him to continue working for him in the forge, but as a business partner.
This man began to learn from each person that bought him as a slave, and eventually, he became the royal tutor, to the next heir to inherit the throne he did so as a slave, and to the royal family, he was practically family. "Like I said there are things in these books you think are fact, but they are completely either wrong or false, Medea must be rolling in her grave when they say witches gain their powers by making a deal with the devil."
A woman looked at me and told me that it had to be true how else would they gain such terrible and frightening powers, I saw this type of woman before, the type that believes everything in a book is literally what is written, the type that considers the commandments actual criminal laws, and believes that the only punishment worthy to those that break the law of the Lord, was death.
Hair tied in a tight bun, wearing a plain long bulky dress no better than a sack really, and standing in a way not to cause the men to fall into sin by appearing to be too alluring, I could probably say that if she let her hair down, cleaned her face a little bit, and got some comfortable clothes, she would knock every guy to the ground with the shock that yes, they work in a lab with a beauty like her.
My family had to suffer a lot because of people that think like her, some people consider the cross marks on our bodies to be holy signs, and most consider us heretics to be treated worse than an actual animal and would not shed a tear about us being tortured or killed in a gruesome fashion. Being stuck on a cross was no treat let me tell you. The damn crows and buzzards were not exactly friendly animals to play with either.
"Allen, you talk like you lived through all of these things, amazing, you wrote these in your perspective, I see, writing history facts as if you were living through them, must make it easier for you to remember them, simply amazing, you know I get the feeling that you and my baby boy would become a good friend if you could have grown up together in the same town."
I was sort of shocked, I looked at Jake and asked him about his son and he told me his son's name was Jan, and his precious son thinks that he doesn't pay him any attention, but he does, and he can't help but to smile and think that his son could eventually be a future researcher for the Black Order, he was in tears when he remembered seeing his son try out the thing he called an Onion Bomb.
"He put tear gas inside a small container, and when he throws it and it hits someone, the gas spreads directly in front of the face of the target, the container doesn't even shatter, he can later take up and refill it. I tell you, that boy makes me feel very proud of him."
I had to admit that the kid does sound like an interesting sort, till he mentioned something that got me worried, and with good reason, Jake told me that his son even though he was so young, was currently trying to figure out the entire Akuma creation process. That is when I stood up from where I was sitting, no, this is not good, not good at all.
If that sick bastard that is my brother even thinks that a human is even attempting to learn how he makes his weapons, my brother would consider that person a threat and he would do everything he could to kill that person. I asked him to tell me where exactly his son lives, and to immediately call for the nearest Exorcist to guard him.
Jake began to laugh and said that there is no need for concern over his son's harmless curiosity, and even if he wanted to ask an Exorcist to keep an eye on his son he told me there are none available, every single Exorcist except me is currently on an Innocence Retrieval mission. So I was the only one that was here. Damn it, I know how that bastard thinks this can't be a mere coincidence.
I got up and began to walk out when Lenalee asked me what was wrong, I told her that the son of that scientist his life was at severe risk, "Lenalee you don't understand, no one does, The Millennium Earl is not known for his kindness, any person who even thinks about to try and figure one of his secrets, that fiend will kill that person. I need to get to that kid and fast or we are going to watch that man cry near the grave of his son, and worse he could end up becoming an Akuma himself."
She began to follow me, it turns out the city where the scientist and his son lived was actually within walking distance of the Black Order Headquarters. "Allen, slow down, you sound like you know how Akuma is created, in fact like you have seen one yourself being created. How? Most of the Black Order only have suspicions about it. I didn't stop and said a hunter studies the animals he or she hunts why would I be any different?
She became quiet from that moment till I saw a kid running around and chasing this guy who was standing right next to one of the Finders of the Order, he was accusing him of being an Akuma, immediately my eye activated and the kid is not entirely right but he is also not entirely wrong, he is wrong that the guy who he is accusing is the actual Finder, and the Akuma, actually somehow stole his face and clothes I can see the soul trapped inside of this Akuma and oh hell, it's a level two.
As I walk near the kid I hear the people scream the same stupid shouts that the idiot cop in the city was saying to me, that Akuma is a myth, that Akuma is just a scam that the crooks calling themselves the Black Order use to rip off the government, that he is just a punk trying to get attention from anyone because even his father thought that he was not even worth paying attention too. Alright, I can see what this Akuma was trying to do, discredit the Black Order, but even I have to say that last comment about him and his father was particularly cruel and coming from a Noah that is saying something.
As I looked at the boy, I came to realize that he sort of reminded me of the scientist I was talking with, I decided to walk up to him and tell him to relax, these people are oblivious to the danger that is around them, they don't believe that Akuma is real, because not believing gives them a sense of security. He flat-out tells me that is nuts.
"What can I say, kid, the distance between genius and insane is thinner than a single hair. You are the son of Jake Russel aren't you?" He looked at me and smiled and said yes, that is his father but how could I possibly know that. I told him that I am an Exorcist from the Black Order. He of course becomes quiet and looks at me for a second, "There is no way that a skinny as a twig guy like you can be an Exorcist! Where is your weapon? Come on, hand it to me, cause clearly, I am going to be even better than you are at destroying Akuma."
I was about to say something when he started to punch me on my stomach, and I realize that the kid was crying, "Kid, the process of how an Akuma is made is never pleasant, and if you keep looking to try and find out how that is done, there will be nothing good that comes it, the Millennium Earl does not let those that trespass with his creations suffer life."
The kid called me a liar and threw something like a ball at me, and as soon as I caught it, the ball opened and sprayed my face with some strange gas, that made me feel like I was sobbing like never before. "So that was the onion bomb, more effective than I gave him credit for, he is not going to believe me, I might need the help of his father to make the brat realize what sorts of trouble he is bringing down on himself."
As I walk back to the Black Order Headquarters I saw someone I didn't think I would ever see again, it was Officer Moore, kind of strange she was standing right next to a Finder wearing what could be called a pastel Sunday dress, boots, and for some odd reason, I never noticed her figure when she was in her police uniform, how odd.
As I walk towards them, she immediately saw me and began to run towards me, as the entrance to the Black Order Headquarters and apparently Lenalee was sent as a welcoming party, yet again, and much like before this time the disaster is that she found me and Moore with Moore screaming my name and hugging me.
I honestly had no idea why this is happening to me, sure we were rather friendly with each other last time we met, but not this friendly, and instead she is leaning her body and her head against mine, "Oh Allen, I missed you." I honestly think I am feeling a very noticeable killer intent coming from the entrance and somehow I am wishing that it wasn't who I think it was.
Lenalee is visibly pissed. She is marching towards us and screaming to let me go and is trying to pull Moore away from me. Screaming to leave my Allen alone. Moore is now equally pissed off and flat out tells her, bitch, as long as he is single he is fair game, so he doesn't belong to you. At this moment I remembered the wise words of Mana who said those that get involved in a catfight get only scratches, so I made a strategic retreat.
By the time I got to the door both girls realize that the person they were fighting for disappeared, "And where do you think you are going, darling." The only thing that came to mind is Oh Shit and told them I needed to see Jake Russel cause his son's life was in danger and ran.
Lenalee calmed down, and looked at Moore, "So why exactly are you here?" The finder that was a few dozen feet away from them said that Moore was found to be a potential accommodator for the new Innocence that was obtained from Mater. Lenalee clearly showing that she is slowly accepting this said, "Oh if that is the case please follow me, we need to begin the testing and potential bonding with the Innocence, but I will say this one last time, keep your paws off my Allen."
Moore looked at her and simply said, "You just stole my line." As I finally made it into the lab I saw Jake and I ran like I was running for dear life to where he was. I told him that I met his precious boy, and tried to convince him that learning the secrets of Akuma's creation would be hazardous to his health, and then told him that then I became a test subject of his onion bomb, so I might need his help to convince his son to leave that research to actual professionals.
As the man put down his clipboard, he asked me why would it be dangerous for his son to learn about how the Akuma are made, I told him that the Earl if anyone tries to study or learn about how his weapons are made would be considered a potential threat and that threat would be eliminated with prejudice, this is the reason why all research is conducted within the building of the Black Order Branches.
"Guess I am going to skip my lunch break, you are right Allen, I will go with you to talk some sense to my boy." I nodded and we began to walk towards the exit of the lab and asked him if he had any clue why Officer Moore was coming here? He said that he only heard that a potential new Exorcist recruit was expected. Not to worry Lenalee was sent to welcome this person.
As we walked out of the building I tried hard not to look in the direction of both of them, just focus on the brat, put one foot in front of the other, focus, on why the hell is this making me feel a shiver down my spine when I face bloody Akuma and never felt this before.
"Oh, and where are you going Allen?" Why did Lenalee have to ask that? I pointed at Jake and simply said it, to try and prevent the death of his son. I told them they can lecture me later, but right now there is a little boy whose life was in danger.
We finally made it through the streets and people to their family home and realized the brat is not there. I asked one of his neighbors and he said that a friend of his had told him that he found something special and invited him to come and see it, at the local graveyard, I didn't not like the sound of this, and decided to hell with it, and began to run towards the graveyard at full speed.
As I finally made it to the graveyard I felt the curse on my eye activate and I began to see that the child next to Jan was a level two Akuma, the same Akuma that had killed the finder we found near the graveyard entrance. As I walked up to Jan I screamed at him to get away from that person, and come towards us, Jan screamed right back that this person is his childhood friend, that his friend would never do a thing to hurt him.
That is when I jumped over Jan and immediately used my claw to block the large bullet that his supposed friend had just shot from his mouth, "That is not your friend, this is an Akuma, and you were nearly killed." Jan doesn't want to, believe me, he kept screaming that his friend would never do that, that his friend would never hurt him until he saw the look on the face of his friend and he was looking up and smiling creepily.
A person I hate the most, The Millennium Earl was coming down from the sky floating down while holding an open umbrella, "Why isn't this a marvelous opportunity, you boy, you wanted to know how my Akuma are created, why this is a perfect opportunity for you, as their creator I am more than happy to tell you all about it."
I kept fighting against this Akuma to try and get my hands on that bastard, but this thing kept getting in my way, and I couldn't kill it outright without causing Jan to have a mental breakdown. "Akuma is my tool to grant the wish of a poor unfortunate soul, that wishes to revive the person they loved most by calling that person and freeing their souls from the clutches of that despicable God!"
I was furious at his words that I never even noticed that Lenalee, Jake, and Moore had finally reached our location. I was enraged, and I looked at the Millennium Earl and screamed, "TELL THE FULL STORY, YOU BASTARD! DON'T YOU DARE LIE TO THE KID AS YOU DID TO ME!" I guess I still have to continue to play the role of Allen Walker for a little while longer.
The Millennium Earl looked at my claw and then looked at me, and began to laugh like a maniac, "Allen Walker, I honestly never thought that we would meet again in such happy surroundings, you look like you are doing well, you said I lied, what could you possibly mean by that accusing little old me?"
I looked at him and if this Akuma was not getting in the way I would kill him already, "Don't pull that innocent act on me! Either you tell him the truth or I will!" To which the bloated bastard made a curtsy and simply said by all means be my guest.
I looked at his shocked face of Jan and I honestly wish I didn't have to do this to him but clearly if want him to live I must. "He summons the souls of a person into a creation made from Dark Matter, the creation must follow his orders, no matter what, and the first thing he orders is to kill the person that summoned the soul and take over his body as his new host."
The sound of a gasp is heard all around us as the people who just arrived heard this last part of our conversation, "Indeed I do, and the only reason you know this Allen, is because you summoned the soul of your dear old dad, and had your claw not ripped it to pieces, I would have had a wonderful new Akuma!"
