Stepping up to sit on the kitchen stool, I tiredly watch Emmett put away groceries and glance at the clock on his stainless steel stove. Four-fifteen. Ugh, that took all damn day. No wonder I'm exhausted. After the slew of tests and talking to Edward in his office, we were finally about to leave before Tanya got a message from radiology that they had a cancellation. The next hour or so was spent trying incredibly hard, and failing, to stay still. I couldn't stop shaking, so they gave me some meds, which have left me drowsy and fuzzy.
"I think I might need to go to bed." I sigh, folding my arms on the kitchen island and laying my head on top of them.
Mussing up my hair, he says, "Not a bad idea, kiddo, but you need to eat something first. Have you had anything but that cinnamon roll today?"
I shrug and smile sheepishly. "A cupcake."
He shakes his head, going toward the fridge and opening it up. "Jesus, Bella! How many did you make?"
"Three dozen." I laugh. "But I figured Carlisle and Esme and Alice and Jasper might want some. Also … I kind of had an idea."
He raises his brow as he puts the bread, turkey, cheese, and mayo on the counter for sandwiches—his go to meal. "You worry me when you have ideas."
I roll my eyes and reach out, slapping him in the arm. "I have great ideas. Anyway, I thought I'd check if Ms. Sue needed some help at Sweet Treats. Just like a few hours a week—nothing too strenuous. Honestly, if I'm left in this house all the time, you're going to gain two-hundred pounds from eating all the sweets I'll bake. I need an outlet."
He sighs. "I don't know, Bella. You really need to rest."
"I'll still rest. It's just a couple hours, and only if she agrees. I'm calling her no matter what."
He knows he can't argue with me and nods, slapping the bread over the meat and cheese. "All right, but you need to listen to your body. If it's too much, don't do it. Now eat up. I'll make dinner later, so if you wake up, it'll be in the fridge for you."
I slid off the stool, going around the island to hug him before taking the plate. "Thanks, Em. I love you."
"Love you too, Bella.
I make my way up to my room and sit down on the bed, taking a bite. I am pretty hungry, and the old-fashioned turkey sandwich hits the spot perfectly.
Looking around my room, I see the boxes I still need to unpack at some point. A lot of them are books, some decor, photo albums, clothes, and all kinds of miscellaneous things I decided to ship instead of donate. I open one that has my favorite comforter in it, pulling it out and spreading it out over my bed.
I lie down, cuddling a pillow as my eyes drift closed.
Damn, I hate being so tired.
Thanks to May, Nole, Fran, Brier, and Meg for prereading and Sally for Beta'ing.
